The embattled Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), who has been on suspension over alleged false asset declaration, Justice Walter Onnoghen, has resigned with immediate effect.
Justice Onnoghen, according to TheCable report, turned in his resignation letter to President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday, Thursday evening.
The National Judicial Council (NJC) had earlier recommended Onnoghen’s compulsory retirement to the president after an emergency meeting yesterday, Thursday.
The CJN’s resignation takes immediate effect as stipulated in section 306 of 1999constitution.
Justice Onnoghen is facing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) over false and non-declaration of assets.
He had on Wednesday, closed his defence at CCT after calling only one witness, his driver.
