Femi Otedola Takes Over Medical Bills Of Sadiq Daba Of ‘Cockcrow At Dawn’ Fame

Billionaire businessman, Femi Otedola, has undertaken to take care of the medical bills of veteran actor, Sadiq Daba, a prominent figure in the 1980’s NTA soap opera: Cockcrow at dawn.

Sadiq Daba recently returned for admission at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital for what those close to him said was chronic obstructive pulmonary disease two years after he underwent treatment in the United Kingdom for leukaemia and prostate cancer.

In a statement today, July 21, Otedola said: “I heard about Mr. Sadiq Daba’s health condition when it was brought to my attention through an online news story I read two days ago.

“I was saddened to hear that he had taken ill again after overcoming his challenges from prostate cancer just two years ago.

“From the news report, I gathered that he was rushed to the Emergency unit of LUTH after being diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

“I must say that even though I don’t know Mr. Daba personally, he is a face I am familiar with through the old TV drama production ‘Cock Crow at Dawn’ which I used to watch while growing up.

“I was moved by a sense of nostalgia and concern when I read of his medical situation recently and decided to take over his medical bills. He has been visited and arrangements are being made to support him.

“In other climes, the likes of Sadiq Daba and other such actors who more or less paved the way for the entertainment industry and the Nollywood industry in Nigeria (which is touted as the 3rd largest movie industry in the world) would be celebrated as Icons and due recognition would be accorded to them.

“For me, taking care of Sadiq’s medical expenses is my little way of showing appreciation and gratitude for the good memories he created for me and others in the past.”

Group Reject Attah Igala’s Endorsement Of Gov Yahaya Bello For Second Term

An Igala group known as Ukomu Igala Organisation (UIO), has rejected the endorsement of Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State for a second term by the Attah of Igala.

The group, which called itself the voice of the Igala people, stressed that it would not support a governor who has subjected the people of the state to poverty and suffering.

An elder of Igala, Engineer Samuel Safiu, who spoke during the inauguration of executives for the Kaduna chapter of the organization, said that even if 10,000 thugs are monetized, Igala people would not endorse Yahaya Bello.

He accused the governor of not paying workers’ salaries for 28 months, adding that there is no way they would support somebody that has no practical projects ‎to show the world.

“The Ukomu Igala therefore, rejects in its entirety, the present situation where the governor of Kogi state would hoodwink our traditional rulers to go and endorse him before the Nigerian president.

“We are equally grateful for the president’s response. How do you expect Igala people to endorse a governor who styles himself as the white lion? Who goes about boasting that the average Igala man’s wife can be purchased for as little as N6,000 or a governor who brutally and senselessly boasts that no Igala man can contest the governorship with him; a governor who cannot fix the streets of Lokoja, the state capital”

According to the elder, the organisation is looking for someone who will move the state higher and whose antecedents are known to Kogites and who respects and understands the collective value of the people of the state.

Reps Member Complains: N8.5 Million Monthly Running Cost Too Small For Me

A member of the House of Representatives, representing Oriade Federal Constituency of Osun State, Oluwole Oke, has said that the N8.5 million monthly running cost for members of the House of Representatives is not sufficient,

In an interview with Punch Newspaper, the lawmaker admitted that the running cost is different from the N606,000 he earns as monthly salary as a federal lawmaker.

The lawmaker asked: “how much is N8.5 million to me as a person?

“If you have to embark on research, looking at all the bills that I have sponsored in the House, you will see that those bills that I sponsored are not ones you can just come by anyhow. They are not bills that you pick on the shelve.

“I remember when I promoted the National Pension Commission Act, it took me out to Chile and other countries like Argentina, the United Kingdom and India.”

“If you give me N8.5 million and I have to go and find out what is happening aside from the information that I get from the Internet.”

“Look at the tickets and see the flight costs even if I am flying economy class. So, how much is that?”

“If I have to engage lawyers and professionals to prepare bills for me, to work on motions for me; and get researchers also.”

Oke made claims about the pay of U.S. lawmakers, saying: “do you know how much their running costs are? It is $1 million. Do you know how much their salary is? It is $14,000 per month. Yet, you pay me $2,000 as salary.”

Why Igalas Want Yahaya Bello Re-Elected, By Enemali James Oguche

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello

We find it necessary to respond to an unfortunate cocktail of wild allegations, all of them without foundation, contained in one Comrade Maji Isah’s opinion piece entitled, “Why do Igalas want Yahaya Bello out?” and published simultaneously in both the traditional and online media platforms. Opinion is free, but facts remain sacred.

Coming during an electioneering period, it is given that he was exercising the fundamental privilege to hold opinion. But whatever might be the motivation for the write-up, Comrade Isah did far less than his usual outings.

We concede that he has a right to canvass support for whoever he wishes, but unkind cuts of the government and governor of his home state is a disservice to the entire people of the confluence state irrespective of creed or religion. We are therefore compelled to set the records straight, so as not to misguide the generation of our children and grandchildren that their past was riddled with unconscionable opportunism. Sentiments cannot replace historical facts and realities.

As a Kogite, the writer has a right to be concerned about developments in his home state, but nothing happened in the political clime of Kogi to warrant the choice of words and description of Governor Yahaya Adoza Bello as Maji Isah would want the world to believe. The use of despicable terms to qualify the modest achievements of the All Progressives Congress in the state is uncharitable and antithetic to fair commentary.

From the first paragraph to the last, the writer labored, albeit unsuccessfully, to give the impression that Governor Bello is incompetent to superintend the affairs of Kogi state. We are sure that even his paymasters would not find that sufficiently flattering.

It is, therefore, unfortunate that the Yahaya Bello-led new direction administration is being drawn into a situation where it will be forced to take time out from his heavy schedule to respond to what are clearly very annoying allegations. This is why as a youth group we have elected to deal with this and set the records straight.

However, having chosen the path of accountability as an important plank of his governance philosophy, Governor Bello must continue to bear the cross of making explanations anytime attempts are made at the very heart of his administration’s credibility.

It is unfortunate that one of the regular crosses of good people of purpose is that they often have to contend with multifarious interests who labour, day and night, to scoop-up mud and throw at the good people. It is also a matter of fact that in the affairs of governance, perception by the different levels of the governed often translates to the reality which they internalize. The detractors of the present government in Kogi state know this and that is why they are taking these diets of evil concoctions to the court of public opinion, knowing that the public is often gullible and would want to believe the worst about their leaders.

As an intellectual c*um socio-cultural group that believes in good governance, we advise the Bello-led administration not to waste the time and resources which they should devote to the people, in responding to scoundrels, whose stock in trade is smearing the good attempts of his administration which has outclassed Maji Isah’s sponsors in every department of human affairs, but it has become imperative to let all doubting Thomases why the Igalas will re-elect Governor Yahaya Bello.

Governor Yahaya Bello has in the last four years left development imprints in Kogi state that are difficult to ignore. His chosen areas of priority, namely education, health, agriculture, infrastructural development and social security have seen progressive achievements. His accomplishments have been attributed largely to prudent and judicious application of funds, visionary planning and consistency in policy implementation.

As a politician of prodigious hue, Bello has demystified power and the act of governance. He has introduced initiatives that are novel in the history of political leadership in Nigeria.

A lot of work has been done in the educational sector. The provision of instructional materials in schools and renovation of dilapidated structures is remarkable. The equal treatment to all students regardless of students’ state of origin in Kogi schools has become an embarrassment for those who still discriminate on basis of state of origin.

Yahaya Bello has equally addressed challenges in the health sector. The implementation of free medical care for children between the ages of 0-5 and for the aged has come to stay. The ripple effect of this on the psyche of the populace cannot be over-emphasized.

What is more? For his administration in Kogi state, everybody resident here is a Kogite and enjoys every amenity or provision of the government without discrimination. The concept of state of origin does not exist. This is why it is shameful that some losers have resorted to playing the ethnic card as the only way they can remain relevant.

It is for the detribalized nature of the governor that his chief of staff, Chief Edward Onoja plays a very important role in the current administration. The upgrade of traditional rulers across the state speaks volumes about his public spiritedness and respect for the traditional institution.

The restoration and revival of the age long cultural festivals after it was banned 63 years ago by colonial masters has not only gained significant support but has served as instrument through which the people get to know their culture. The gesture has been described in several quarters as a welcomed development since we all have a responsibility to transfer to future generations the philosophy of our founding fathers, who sacrificed so much so that we could enjoy the fruits of liberty.

Comrade Maji Isah should know that writing without facts is the worst crime in journalism. What manner of ethics is embedded in this assumption for instance: ‘governance has been reduced to child’s play in Kogi state, health systems has collapsed, education is at the lowest ebbs, infrastructures are decaying, living standards can not be measured anymore, people are dying, hunger is walking naked on the streets of Kogi state and yet, they was enough resources to change the story of Kogi state positively under Yahaya Bello but squandered for lack of experience and youthful exuberance”? Shouldn’t Comrade Isah have scant evidence before going to town with wild allegations? There’s definitely no truth in the allegations and we challenge the writer to prove his unsubstantiated allegations.

Suffice it to add that the current administration under the able leadership of the Governor Yahaya Bello is almost on auto-pilot and we know that the Igala nation would not join any disgruntled force to put spanner in the works. God Almighty decides who rules and Comrade Isah’s paymasters know that if God wills, He would thrust them with higher responsibilities at his appointed time.

Comrade Maji Isah should know that all the dramatis personae in the Kogi state political arena are from one large political family, irrespective of their ethnic group or religious belief. A house divided against itself cannot stand and the articles of faith binding us all together as Kogites would not allow us hurt one another. We the people of Kogi state are better together and we should not trade this off for whatever interest we choose to serve.

British Airways Turns Passengers Going To Egypt Away, Suspends Flights

Passengers about to board a British Airways flight to Cairo, capital of Egypt, from London’s Heathrow Airport were turned away and the flight cancelled as it announced the suspension of its flights to that country.

In cancelling flight and suspending operations to Egypt, the British Airways said that it will not have alternative flights for a week, and did not specify state what was the security issue that led to its action. The flag carrier simply said that the airways would not operate its aircraft unless it felt it was safe to do so.

“We constantly review our security arrangements at all our airports around the world, and have suspended flights to Cairo for seven days as a precaution to allow for further assessment.”

British Airways, in a statement said:”the safety and security of our customers and crew is always our priority, and we would never operate an aircraft unless it was safe to do so.”

Some affected passengers posted pictures on social media appearing to show a letter handed out by BA with a similar message.

A spokeswoman for the airline said it could not immediately offer more information about the suspensions. Reuters said the Egypt State Information Service could not immediately be reached for comment. A spokesman for Cairo airport told the BBC the airport had yet to be notified by BA of any such changes.

Three Egyptian airport security sources told Reuters that British staff were checking security at Cairo airport on Wednesday and Thursday. They provided no further details.

In its travel advice for British nationals heading to Egypt, the Foreign Office in London warns: “There’s a heightened risk of terrorism against aviation.

“Additional security measures are in place for flights departing from Egypt to the UK. You should co-operate fully with security officials at airports.”

Britain advises against all but essential travel by air to or from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on the Sinai peninsula.

“Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Egypt. Although most attacks occur in North Sinai, there is a risk of terrorist attacks across the country,” Britons are warned.

“Terrorists in Egypt likely maintain the intent and capability to target aviation.

“The greatest threat is on the Sinai peninsula where Daesh (Islamic State group) operate with greater freedom, but terrorists are active in mainland Egypt, including Cairo,” it said.

The Foreign Office warns that it “can’t offer advice on the safety of individual airlines.”

About 415,000 British nationals visited Egypt in 2018.

South West Governors Angered By Northern Elders’ Call On Fulani To Vacate Region

South West governors have expressed anger over the call by the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), asking all Fulani residing in Southern parts of the country to return to the north, describing such call as most unfortunate, divisive and retrogressive.

In a statement today, July 20, personally signed by their Chairman and Ondo state Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu in Akure condemned such call, saying: “with no intention to engage anyone, it is incumbent on us, as elected representatives of our people in the South West Region of the country, to denounce this divisive and retrogressive statement in the strongest terms possible.

“The South West Governors’ Forum views, with palpable trepidation and outrage, the sustained attempts to fan the ember of discord, seizing every opportunity offered by the current security challenge to undermine the unity and peaceful co-existence among Nigerians.

“It is appalling, to assert the least, that the tragic incident, which claimed the life of Mrs. Funke Olakunrin, the daughter of Pa Fasoranti, the leader of Afenifere, would be used by certain persons to advance the cause of parochial politics.

“We intend to get to the root of the sad occurrence as we await the findings of security agencies on the unfortunate incident.

“The Governors and the people of the South West are working assiduously at the current security challenges with a view to finding lasting solutions to curtail the nefarious activities of undesirable elements bent on wrecking our collective peace.

“We are not unaware of the antics of certain elements, who hope to garner political mileage from the contrived crises in virtually all parts of the country.

“We are equally convinced that this confusion serves the narrow interests of some persons.

“The country has a rich history; she has had to encounter adversities in the course of her transition to nationhood. She has overcome them all.

“This distraction will also pass. We look up to the security agencies to take cohesive steps to curtail this major challenge of insecurity which engenders hopelessness.

“We can only enjoin all citizens, on our part, to be patient and continue to cooperate with them as they combat the festering crises. We on our part have taken great strides with the hope that great success will be achieved.

“We are, through this medium, reiterating the commitment of the Governors and the people of the South West to the nationhood project, as we continue to address the challenges confronting our people.”

The governors promised that they “will promote, with renewed vigour, all activities which encourage amity among our people. They therefore called “on all persons of Fulani extraction, and indeed all Nigerians from other parts of the country, resident in the South West Region, to discountenance the unpatriotic outburst of the Northern Elders Forum and other self-serving organizations of opportunists.”

Benue Gov Asks Buhari To Hold National Dialogue Forum On Insecurity

Gov Samuel Ortom

The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom on Saturday charged President Muhammadu Buhari to consider a National Dialogue Forum as a solution to the looming insecurity crisis in the country.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase said that the governor spoke when he received the President of Evangelical Church Winning All, ECWA, Reverend Stephen Panya Baba, at the Benue Peoples House, Makurdi.

The statement reads: “The Governor urged President Muhammadu Buhari to call for a National Dialogue Forum where Nigerians would frankly speak on issues affecting the country, particularly insecurity and proffer solutions.

“As an interim measure to end the wave of threats and counter threats from different sections of the country, Governor Ortom recommended that security operatives should not ignore those beating drums of war.”

Governor Ortom condemned the latest order the Fulani herders association, Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore has given to its members to defend themselves, describing the order as capable of causing unimaginable violence.

“The Governor wondered why the group continuously makes inflammatory statements but its officials are not invited for questioning,” the statement added.

Governor Ortom, who supported former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his letter to Buhari, however, called for national prayers for peace in all parts of the country, even as he expressed the hope that the current security challenges would soon be overcome.

Don’t Kill Innocent Fulani Herdsmen Over Bandits Attacks, Sokoto Gov Cautions

Aminu Tambuwa of Sokoto

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has cautioned local vigilantes against harassment and killing of innocent Fulani over bandits attacks in the state.

The governor gave the warning while commiserating with families of the 29 people killed by bandits in Kamitau, Malafaru and Ololi communities in Shinaka District of Goronyo Local Government Area.

Governor Tambuwal said that his administration is commited to ending all forms of banditry across the state, describing bandits’ attacks on innocent people as wicked.

He assured that state government in collaboration with security agencies, is making efforts to find lasting solution to the menace even as he prayed to Allah for forgiveness of the deceased persons and called on the bandits to drop their guns and embrace dialogue for the prevalence of peace and stability in the state.

Governor Tambuwal said that a window of discussion had been opened with leaders of the bandits and assured that by the grace of God, lasting peace would prevail in the state.

He expressed gratitude to district heads and other community leaders in the state for their sustained support to the government and urged them to remain calm as government was making efforts to stem the incident.

Responding on behalf of the families of the deceased persons, the District Head of Goronyo, Alhaji Sambo Usman, thanked the governor for the condolence visit and prayed Allah to reward him abundantly.

Usman told the governor that they had since embarked on public enlightenment on the importance of peaceful co-existence.

The monarch called on various communities to intensify prayers for peace and stability in the state and country as a whole.

NAN report that the incident occurred on Thursday as hundred of bandits on motorcycles raided the communities firing guns indiscriminately on residents.

A source in the area told newsmen that the assailants arrived in the villages at night, armed with sophisticated weapons and started shooting sporadically.

He explained that they killed villagers and destroyed houses and other property.

According to him, many people have fled their homes to seek refuge in nearby communities within Goronyo and Isa local government areas of the state.

Earlier, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Sokoto state command, Muhammad Sadiq, confirmed the incident but could not provide the casualty figure of and places affected.
