Confusion In Abuja As Shiites, Security Agents Clash: 1 Killed, TV Reporter Shot

Nigeria Federal Capital went up in flame today, as police and soldiers fired gun and tear gas canisters in the battle with members of Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), otherwise known as Shiites, who again staged demonstration around Eagle Square, close to the National Assembly.

Between 1.00 and 2.00 pm, the Eagle Square, the Federal Secretariat and area around the Central District of Abuja were charged as the rat-ta-tat firing of the security agents sent motorists and pedestrians scampering to safety.

Smokes from the canisters of teargas in the front of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) headquarters equally sent motorists and pedestrians scampering again back and forth.

The protest by the IMN member was said to have began from NITEL junction at Wuse 2 and armed policemen went into action immediately to cordon off the road leading to the National Assembly and three arms zone.

In the melee, a member of the IMN was shot dead even as a reporter of Channels Television also received gunshot, possibly, from stray bullet and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Those who were injured were seen lying almost lifeless even as the security agents continued to fire at the protesters as they advanced toward the Eagle Square.

The Police Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, has promoptly confirmed the incidence and said that the situation has been brought under control, even as the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu briefed President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Police boss told new men at the Villa that he had gone to brief the President on the security situation in the country, “especially the activities of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN).

“Specifically, we briefed him on the incessant act coming out of this group of people, protesting here and there. We briefed him on the fact that we have been able to curtail their excesses and to let him understand that everything is under control.”

Mohammed Adamu said that President asked him and his officers to make sure that they provide security for every citizen of this country and not to leave any space that some group of people will create breakdown of law and order.

“So, the charge by Mr. President is that we must provide security for every Nigerian.”

Saudi Arabia To Host US Troops To Boost Regional Security

Saudi Arabia has decided to host US troops in a joint move with Washington to boost regional security, the kingdom’s defence ministry said, as tensions soar in the Gulf.

“Based on mutual cooperation between Saudi Arabia and the United States of America, and their desire to enhance everything that could preserve the security of the region and its stability… King Salman gave his approval to host American forces”, a ministry spokesman was quoted by Saudi state news agency SPA as saying.

Saudi Arabia has not hosted US forces since 2003 when they withdrew following the end of the war with Iraq.

The US presence in Saudi Arabia lasted 12 years, starting with Operation Desert Storm in 1991, when Iraq invaded Kuwait.

As many as 200 US aircraft were stationed at the Prince Sultan airbase situated around 80 kilometres south of the capital at the peak of the Iraq war, and as many as 2,700 missions a day were handled by the headquarters in Saudi Arabia.

But relations between the two countries were not always easy during the 12 years of cooperation, particularly following the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York which were orchestrated by Saudi-born Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden.

Tensions in the Gulf increased further on Friday as Iran said it had confiscated a British-flagged tanker in the Strait of Hormuz and as US President Donald Trump insisted that the US military had downed an Iranian drone that was threatening a US naval vessel, despite denials from Tehran.

Kogi PDP Chairmanship candidate Complains Of Bribery At Election Of Executive

A chairmanship aspirant in the just-concluded Kogi State Congress of the opposition Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Mohammed Omuya has complained of bribery at the congress of the party, even as he rejected the outcome of the election that produce Engr. Sam Uhuotu as the Chairman.

Mohammed Omuya said, after the results of the election were declared today, July 21 in Lokoja, the State capital: “in a democratic setting, for a party that has so much propagate propaganda against the APC-led Government, it is shocking and heart breaking to see bribed delegates following the instructions of selfish leaders to go against the interest of the majority.

“The congress was never a free and fair congress. It was accompanied by so much abnormalities, where a group of people fill in the booklet of the ballot paper on behalf of the delegate,” he said.

In the election Engr. Uhuotu polled 1,478 votes while Mohammed Omuya scored 270.

We Are No Thieves Like You – Presidency Tells PDP

Shehu Garba

The Presidency has reacted to accusation by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) spent the US Dollar drawn from the excess crude oil account on 2019 elections.

A statement today, July 21 by the senior special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu said that PDP is used to the fact that governments are run on the basis of freewheeling looting “as they did their own. The PDP is under a socio-emotional distress.

“The PDP spent Defence procurement funds on their failed 2015 political campaigns as proven in court. That is not to say every succeeding government, more so one led by a Buhari will do the same.”

Garba Shehu explained that out of the $1,000 Million $490 Million was spent by the Buhari administration to purchase a dozen Super Tucano fighter aircraft in a direct government-to-government (no Contractors or Commission Agents) transaction with government of the United State.

“Various other military procurements have been made. Balance of expenditure stands at about USD 880 million or so.

“Barring considerations of national security, the details of the stage of implementation, the procurements made and the suppliers will be obtained. We will give more of the details tomorrow, Monday, July 22.

Femi Otedola Takes Over Medical Bills Of Sadiq Daba Of ‘Cockcrow At Dawn’ Fame

Billionaire businessman, Femi Otedola, has undertaken to take care of the medical bills of veteran actor, Sadiq Daba, a prominent figure in the 1980’s NTA soap opera: Cockcrow at dawn.

Sadiq Daba recently returned for admission at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital for what those close to him said was chronic obstructive pulmonary disease two years after he underwent treatment in the United Kingdom for leukaemia and prostate cancer.

In a statement today, July 21, Otedola said: “I heard about Mr. Sadiq Daba’s health condition when it was brought to my attention through an online news story I read two days ago.

“I was saddened to hear that he had taken ill again after overcoming his challenges from prostate cancer just two years ago.

“From the news report, I gathered that he was rushed to the Emergency unit of LUTH after being diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

“I must say that even though I don’t know Mr. Daba personally, he is a face I am familiar with through the old TV drama production ‘Cock Crow at Dawn’ which I used to watch while growing up.

“I was moved by a sense of nostalgia and concern when I read of his medical situation recently and decided to take over his medical bills. He has been visited and arrangements are being made to support him.

“In other climes, the likes of Sadiq Daba and other such actors who more or less paved the way for the entertainment industry and the Nollywood industry in Nigeria (which is touted as the 3rd largest movie industry in the world) would be celebrated as Icons and due recognition would be accorded to them.

“For me, taking care of Sadiq’s medical expenses is my little way of showing appreciation and gratitude for the good memories he created for me and others in the past.”

Group Reject Attah Igala’s Endorsement Of Gov Yahaya Bello For Second Term

An Igala group known as Ukomu Igala Organisation (UIO), has rejected the endorsement of Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State for a second term by the Attah of Igala.

The group, which called itself the voice of the Igala people, stressed that it would not support a governor who has subjected the people of the state to poverty and suffering.

An elder of Igala, Engineer Samuel Safiu, who spoke during the inauguration of executives for the Kaduna chapter of the organization, said that even if 10,000 thugs are monetized, Igala people would not endorse Yahaya Bello.

He accused the governor of not paying workers’ salaries for 28 months, adding that there is no way they would support somebody that has no practical projects ‎to show the world.

“The Ukomu Igala therefore, rejects in its entirety, the present situation where the governor of Kogi state would hoodwink our traditional rulers to go and endorse him before the Nigerian president.

“We are equally grateful for the president’s response. How do you expect Igala people to endorse a governor who styles himself as the white lion? Who goes about boasting that the average Igala man’s wife can be purchased for as little as N6,000 or a governor who brutally and senselessly boasts that no Igala man can contest the governorship with him; a governor who cannot fix the streets of Lokoja, the state capital”

According to the elder, the organisation is looking for someone who will move the state higher and whose antecedents are known to Kogites and who respects and understands the collective value of the people of the state.

Reps Member Complains: N8.5 Million Monthly Running Cost Too Small For Me

A member of the House of Representatives, representing Oriade Federal Constituency of Osun State, Oluwole Oke, has said that the N8.5 million monthly running cost for members of the House of Representatives is not sufficient,

In an interview with Punch Newspaper, the lawmaker admitted that the running cost is different from the N606,000 he earns as monthly salary as a federal lawmaker.

The lawmaker asked: “how much is N8.5 million to me as a person?

“If you have to embark on research, looking at all the bills that I have sponsored in the House, you will see that those bills that I sponsored are not ones you can just come by anyhow. They are not bills that you pick on the shelve.

“I remember when I promoted the National Pension Commission Act, it took me out to Chile and other countries like Argentina, the United Kingdom and India.”

“If you give me N8.5 million and I have to go and find out what is happening aside from the information that I get from the Internet.”

“Look at the tickets and see the flight costs even if I am flying economy class. So, how much is that?”

“If I have to engage lawyers and professionals to prepare bills for me, to work on motions for me; and get researchers also.”

Oke made claims about the pay of U.S. lawmakers, saying: “do you know how much their running costs are? It is $1 million. Do you know how much their salary is? It is $14,000 per month. Yet, you pay me $2,000 as salary.”

Why Igalas Want Yahaya Bello Re-Elected, By Enemali James Oguche

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello

We find it necessary to respond to an unfortunate cocktail of wild allegations, all of them without foundation, contained in one Comrade Maji Isah’s opinion piece entitled, “Why do Igalas want Yahaya Bello out?” and published simultaneously in both the traditional and online media platforms. Opinion is free, but facts remain sacred.

Coming during an electioneering period, it is given that he was exercising the fundamental privilege to hold opinion. But whatever might be the motivation for the write-up, Comrade Isah did far less than his usual outings.

We concede that he has a right to canvass support for whoever he wishes, but unkind cuts of the government and governor of his home state is a disservice to the entire people of the confluence state irrespective of creed or religion. We are therefore compelled to set the records straight, so as not to misguide the generation of our children and grandchildren that their past was riddled with unconscionable opportunism. Sentiments cannot replace historical facts and realities.

As a Kogite, the writer has a right to be concerned about developments in his home state, but nothing happened in the political clime of Kogi to warrant the choice of words and description of Governor Yahaya Adoza Bello as Maji Isah would want the world to believe. The use of despicable terms to qualify the modest achievements of the All Progressives Congress in the state is uncharitable and antithetic to fair commentary.

From the first paragraph to the last, the writer labored, albeit unsuccessfully, to give the impression that Governor Bello is incompetent to superintend the affairs of Kogi state. We are sure that even his paymasters would not find that sufficiently flattering.

It is, therefore, unfortunate that the Yahaya Bello-led new direction administration is being drawn into a situation where it will be forced to take time out from his heavy schedule to respond to what are clearly very annoying allegations. This is why as a youth group we have elected to deal with this and set the records straight.

However, having chosen the path of accountability as an important plank of his governance philosophy, Governor Bello must continue to bear the cross of making explanations anytime attempts are made at the very heart of his administration’s credibility.

It is unfortunate that one of the regular crosses of good people of purpose is that they often have to contend with multifarious interests who labour, day and night, to scoop-up mud and throw at the good people. It is also a matter of fact that in the affairs of governance, perception by the different levels of the governed often translates to the reality which they internalize. The detractors of the present government in Kogi state know this and that is why they are taking these diets of evil concoctions to the court of public opinion, knowing that the public is often gullible and would want to believe the worst about their leaders.

As an intellectual c*um socio-cultural group that believes in good governance, we advise the Bello-led administration not to waste the time and resources which they should devote to the people, in responding to scoundrels, whose stock in trade is smearing the good attempts of his administration which has outclassed Maji Isah’s sponsors in every department of human affairs, but it has become imperative to let all doubting Thomases why the Igalas will re-elect Governor Yahaya Bello.

Governor Yahaya Bello has in the last four years left development imprints in Kogi state that are difficult to ignore. His chosen areas of priority, namely education, health, agriculture, infrastructural development and social security have seen progressive achievements. His accomplishments have been attributed largely to prudent and judicious application of funds, visionary planning and consistency in policy implementation.

As a politician of prodigious hue, Bello has demystified power and the act of governance. He has introduced initiatives that are novel in the history of political leadership in Nigeria.

A lot of work has been done in the educational sector. The provision of instructional materials in schools and renovation of dilapidated structures is remarkable. The equal treatment to all students regardless of students’ state of origin in Kogi schools has become an embarrassment for those who still discriminate on basis of state of origin.

Yahaya Bello has equally addressed challenges in the health sector. The implementation of free medical care for children between the ages of 0-5 and for the aged has come to stay. The ripple effect of this on the psyche of the populace cannot be over-emphasized.

What is more? For his administration in Kogi state, everybody resident here is a Kogite and enjoys every amenity or provision of the government without discrimination. The concept of state of origin does not exist. This is why it is shameful that some losers have resorted to playing the ethnic card as the only way they can remain relevant.

It is for the detribalized nature of the governor that his chief of staff, Chief Edward Onoja plays a very important role in the current administration. The upgrade of traditional rulers across the state speaks volumes about his public spiritedness and respect for the traditional institution.

The restoration and revival of the age long cultural festivals after it was banned 63 years ago by colonial masters has not only gained significant support but has served as instrument through which the people get to know their culture. The gesture has been described in several quarters as a welcomed development since we all have a responsibility to transfer to future generations the philosophy of our founding fathers, who sacrificed so much so that we could enjoy the fruits of liberty.

Comrade Maji Isah should know that writing without facts is the worst crime in journalism. What manner of ethics is embedded in this assumption for instance: ‘governance has been reduced to child’s play in Kogi state, health systems has collapsed, education is at the lowest ebbs, infrastructures are decaying, living standards can not be measured anymore, people are dying, hunger is walking naked on the streets of Kogi state and yet, they was enough resources to change the story of Kogi state positively under Yahaya Bello but squandered for lack of experience and youthful exuberance”? Shouldn’t Comrade Isah have scant evidence before going to town with wild allegations? There’s definitely no truth in the allegations and we challenge the writer to prove his unsubstantiated allegations.

Suffice it to add that the current administration under the able leadership of the Governor Yahaya Bello is almost on auto-pilot and we know that the Igala nation would not join any disgruntled force to put spanner in the works. God Almighty decides who rules and Comrade Isah’s paymasters know that if God wills, He would thrust them with higher responsibilities at his appointed time.

Comrade Maji Isah should know that all the dramatis personae in the Kogi state political arena are from one large political family, irrespective of their ethnic group or religious belief. A house divided against itself cannot stand and the articles of faith binding us all together as Kogites would not allow us hurt one another. We the people of Kogi state are better together and we should not trade this off for whatever interest we choose to serve.
