Coalition Alleges Plot To Unseat Saraki, Dogara As Senate President, Reps Speaker Tuesday

CUPP spokesperson, Ikenga Ugochinyere

The Olusegun Obasanjo’s group, Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has alleged that plan has been concluded by the government of President Muhammadu Buhari to unseat the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara on Tuesday, January 29.

At a news briefing today, Sunday, the first national spokesman of the group, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, said that the APC led Federal government is of the belief that Tuesday is their best and last chance to effect the changes as their control of the judiciary will be put to use to ensure that there is no reversal of justice for the present occupants.

“The APC is ready to do whatever it takes to destroy the very fulcrum of our constitutional democracy on Tuesday and have vowed, it is tomorrow or never. The judicial coup which they believed was supposed to be more difficult went very easily beyond their imagination hence the need to complete the takeover of the National Assembly immediately so that the distraction of the election campaigns will be put to use.

“They have also resolved that the government will make some big positive announcements tomorrow being Monday, 28th January so as to deflect the minds of Nigerians. Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Chibuike Amechi and Babatunde Fashola have been saddled with the responsibility of choosing the issue for announcement by the government.

“The plot will see the criminal announcement of Sen. Ahmmed Lawan as the Senate President, Sen. Hope Uzodimma as the Deputy Senate President and Sen. Godswill Akpabio as the Senate Leader. While in the House of Representatives, Hon Gbajabiamila will be announced as the Speaker of the House and Hon Abdulmimin Jibril will be announced as the Deputy Speaker. The decision on who will be the House leader will be resolved by the trio of Bola Tinubu, Adams Oshiomhole and Sen. Gorge Akume.

“The arrowheads of this treasonable plot in the National Assembly include Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, Ali Ndume, George Akume and Kabiru Gaya. While the mebers of the House who are part of this plot to destroy democracy include Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, Hon. Abdulmimin Jubril and Hon. Agbonayima.

“To ensure the plot goes successfully, the Federal Government has mapped out the sum of $70, 000 for each Senator and $40, 000 for each House member for what it called welfare since majority of them will be compelled to be in town suddenly. The money for the bribes have already been released to Senator Lawan and Hon. Gbajabiamila for onward distribution to their members as they return. The money amounting to $15million ($8million for the House and $7 million for the Senate) was sourced from NNPC, CBN, NDDC, NPA, NIMASA, a commercial bank and a company the owner of whom is a member of the cabal.

“Nigerians are hereby put on notice that these coupists are plotting that Sen. Saraki, the Senate President, Sen Ike Ekweremmadu the Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ben Bruce and Sen. Sen. Dino Melaye, Biodun Olujimi, Hon. Dogara, Kingsley Chinda, Nnena Ukeje among others would be stopped by security agents from gaining entrance into the National Assembly. Thugs have been mobilized from Plateau, Kwara and Kogi to mount protest at the gates of the National assembly and have the approval to attack and disperse any group that come to hold a counter rally.”

Nigeria’s Presidency Educates US, UK, EU On Reasons For Suspending Justice Onnoghen

The Presidency has reacted to what it called the coordinated statements of the United States, United Kingdom and European Union” linking the suspension of Chief Judge of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen to the conduct of the upcoming elections.

In a statement today, the presidential spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu said that while the Presidency appreciates the concerns by the three statements and accepts that the authors of the statements believe they were acting in friendship toward Nigeria with regard to making the statements, “we also note that friends, when not properly informed or acting in haste, can indeed make serious mistakes even with the best of intentions. Such is the case here.

Garba Shehu said that the statements by the three seemed more driven by unfounded assumptions and to be honest, a certain condescension to this African democracy, adding that this clearly was unfortunate.

“But this gives us an opportunity to clarify some points in the hope that these three friends reach a deeper understanding of the situation.

“The statements by the US, UK and EU speak of their respect for constitutional practice and fair elections. However, the positions they stake tend to contravene rather than strengthen these laudable objectives.”

Part of the statement by Garba Shehu goes thus:

CJN Onnoghen’s situation is one of his own making and, to a large degree, his own choosing.

The CJN was brought before the CCT because of a serious breach of law regarding his assets declaration. This is not a mere technicality like innocently placing a document in a wrong file or mistakenly placing yesterday’s date on a document.

All credible evidence indicates the CJN owned and operated several secret bank accounts. Unexplained large sums of money, exceeding several million dollars have passed through these accounts. Several thousand dollars are currently parked in the accounts. Multiple deposits of equal sums of money were deposited in some of those accounts during the same day. Such rapid and equal deposits are indicative of a person attempting to evade banking reporting laws and regulations.

Thus far, CJN Onnoghen has given no plausible explanation for the funds or for failing to report the subject accounts in his assets declaration despite having ample time and opportunity to explain the omission.  Given the amount of money involved and the CJN’s inability to explain the source of the funds, the most plausible explanation at this point is also the most unfortunate explanation. No one did this to CJN Onnoghen. He and he alone is to blame for this turn of events.

Over the years and with great frequency, the authors of the three statements have advised and even chided Nigeria about official corruption. Now we are presented with the sad and unwanted situation where the CJN is discovered to have a vast, unexplained amount of money in his pocket.

Because of this he has been thoroughly discredited. It is untenable that a person in such compromised circumstances would be allowed to preside over the entire judicial system of a great nation. That would travesty the nation and what it stands for.

Had the situation been reversed and the US, UK or any EU member government found that its chief judicial official is the recipient of large sums of money of questionable origin and Nigeria suggested that you retain the person in that position, you would question Nigeria’s bona fides. You also would swiftly move to suspend the official pending final determination of the causes against him.

Not one of your nations would allow a person enmeshed in legal uncertainty to preside over your legal systems until the cloud has been cleared from him. That would incentivize corruption and assault the rule of law.

Thus, the CJN should have and could have helped the process in this regard by recusing himself from the bench until this matter is settled.

Instead, he indefinitely postponed a NJC meeting for no plausible reason except to avoid any consideration of this matter by the NJC.

Again, this calls into question his motives while undermining the normal operations of the judiciary.  The CJN cannot be allowed to use his office to shield himself from the normal operation of the law as applied to any other jurist or any other Nigerian for that matter. Such a ruse is effectively an abuse of office. His position is one of utmost public trust; it is not a shield to protect him from the fair consequence of his own actions.

Despite these errors and omissions by the CJN, let us make this very clear, he has not been removed from office. Nor has he been permanently replaced. Those who claim that he has been permanently removed, do so out of imprecision of thought or mischief.

CJN Onnoghen has been suspended pending the final determination of the substantive issues in his matter. The suspension is only temporary. This is only as it should be. He cannot sit as both defendant and umpire in his own matter. No legal system allows for such self-interested adjudication; the US, UK and EU should not now ask us to embrace such an anomaly.

While the three friends seem to give much credence to those who question the constitutionality of the suspension, they seem to give less to those who believe what we did is constitutional and protective of the integrity of the judiciary. Only the three can answer why they have assumed this bias.

Last, the three make a curious direct linkage between the CJN suspension and the elections. However, in Nigerian law there is no such linkage. The CJN does not run the election. Nor is he the first arbiter of any electoral complaints. He and the Supreme Court will only get involved as the final arbiter at the end of the appellate process.

For the authors to link the CJN to the elections in this way is illogical unless they assume that election complaints will be filed and will go all the way to the Supreme Court. Here perhaps they know something about the intentions of certain political actors to which we are not privy.

Yet, even with that, the US , UK and EU should want any such matters to be heard by a Supreme Court led by a CJN without an obvious and outstanding ethical and legal blemish on his ledger. To have such a person preside over any case, would call into question the impartiality of any decision rendered and undermine the rule of law.

This cannot be what these three friends of Nigeria intended. Thus, they should do a bit more research on this matter and refrain from being too hastily attracted by the arguments of those who have partisan agenda at odds with the government’s positions on most matters and who thus hope to use this issue as a new arrow in their quiver of partisan contestations.

President Buhari Is My Personal Friend, Gov Umahi Of Ebonyi Confesses

“I wish to put it on record that the President, Muhammad Buhari, is my personal friend and a friend of the state (Ebonyi). I have much respect for the office of the president.”

A statement by Chief Emmanuel Igwe, who is the Chairman of Strategy Committee of Divine Mandate for Governor Umahi’s campaign organization, quoted the governor as saying that he had great respect for the president, and that he had promised to mobilize 2000 PDP members to come out and receive the president during his campaign stopover in Abakaliki, the state capital, this week.

“The governor wishes Buhari and his entourage a happy stay as APC Presidential Campaign Council visits Ebonyi on the 30th of January, 2019.”

Governor Umahi, who doubles as Chairman of South East Governors’ Forum, was also quoted as saying that he had been under pressure to support the re-election of “my president by APC bigwigs especially the party chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, Chibuike Amaechi just to mention but a few who come under various guises that the APC has no interest in Ebonyi guber race.

The statement said that the has been too magnanimous to the APC by donating the sum of five million naira to its gubernatorial candidate, Senator Sonni Ogbuoji to enable him print campaign posters “and promised to mobilize two thousand people that will welcome Mr President on the proposed campaign rally.”

New Police Boss Retires His Seniors, 7 Deputy Inspectors General

The new acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Muhammed Adamu is said to have retired seven Deputy Inspectors General of police, who were his seniors.

The affected officers are Maigari Dikko, the DIG in charge of finance and administration and Habila Joshak, the DIG in charge of operations.

The remaining five DIGs are Emmanuel Inyang, information and communications technology; Agboola Oshodi-Glover, logistics and supply; Mohammed Katsina, research and planning; Sani Mohammed, training and development; and Peace Ibekwe-Abdallah, federal criminal investigation and intelligence.

Their retirement came today, Sunday evening, and is due to be announced formally later.

Police spokesperson, Frank Mba’s telephone was switched off at the time of this report.

The seven DIGs and eight assistant inspectors-general were identified as having joined the police before IGP Adamu, who was appointed on January 15 after the former IG Ibrahim Idris was retired as he attained 60 years.

The retirement of the seven police chiefs is in furtherance of the convention that recommends the retirement of senior police chiefs when an officer junior to them in service or lower in rank is appointed to lead the institution.

When Idris was appointed IG in 2016, more than 20 DIGs and AIGs were compelled to retire from service to enable him constitute his management team.

Adamu has now followed the tradition, which has been criticized as wasteful and demoralizing because of huge resources the nation had spent on the vast knowledge the senior officers had acquired over the years.

Gov el-Rufai To Nigerians: If Politician Asks You To Go Violent, Tell Him To Bring His Kid

“If any politician approaches any of you to cause violence, ask him to bring his child so that you will execute the plot together. Politicians are fond of using the children of the masses for nefarious activities while their children are either schooling somewhere, or are safe abroad.

“No life is better than the other. The life of a rich man’s son is no more precious than the life of a poor man’s son. Also, the life of an educated person’s son is of equal value as the life of an illiterate’s son.”

These were the advice of the Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El Rufai, who raised alarm that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is planning to disrupt the coming general elections because of its fear of an imminent defeat.

The Governor, who spoke today, Sunday, at a stakeholders’ meeting at Kudan town in Kaduna, cited unnamed intelligence reports, however, said that the security agents are already on the alert to ensure peaceful elections and to apprehend any person that may want to cause a breach of the law.

“As a leader, it is my responsibility to tell you what is being planned because, there are a lot of PDP bigwigs in Kudan local government and they may try to disturb the peace of this area,” El Rufai argued.

The Governor advised the people to resist those who plan to disrupt the peaceful conduct of the elections even as he assured that government will provide adequate security on the election day for people to vote candidates of their choices.

El-Rufai said that politics is about convincing people to follow their conviction, saying: “ politics is about conviction. There is no compulsion in politics. Siblings of the same family can vote for different parties or candidates. It is our duty as government to ensure security so that people can exercise their franchise.”

The governor reiterated that his choice of Dr. Hadiza Balarabe as his running mate has nothing to do with religion or ethnicity but her competence.

“Ethno-religious considerations have always informed the choice of deputy governors since 1992 but it has not brought peace in Kaduna state.”

The governor said that it is time to discard politics of religion and ethnicity and embrace a merit-based system that will bring progress and development in the country.

Kudan is the hometown of Isa Ashiru, the PDP governorship candidate.

Similarly, Hunkuyi which is the headquarters of Kudan local government area, is the hometown of Senator Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi, El Rufai’s estranged political ally who is the senatorial candidate of the PDP.

Ekiti Gov Threatens To Arrest Parents Who Allow Their School Children To Hawk

Kayode Fayemi

The Ekiti Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi has said that the state government will henceforth arrest and prosecute parents who allow their school going children to hawk on the streets during school hours.

The governor, through his Chief Press Secretary, Olayinka Oyebode, today, Sunday in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, asked parents at a meeting with stakeholders in the education sector, to take advantage of the free education policy of his administration to reduce the number of out-of-school children.

Governor Fayemi said that all hands must be on deck to checkmate the declining school enrolment in the state regarded as ‘Fountain of Knowledge.’

The Governor said that many parents are yet to take full advantage of the free and qualitative education policy of the administration.

He said that part of the responsibilities of government is to ensure that children and youth, who are the future of the nation, are properly groomed through qualitative education that would prepare them for the future.

He said that the current school enrolment rate of 55 per cent as against 96 per cent recorded in 2014 is unacceptable to his government, adding that something must be done urgently to reverse the ugly trend.

He said that the state government had started compiling records of retired teachers with a view to determining available vacancies in the teaching service and how to fill them.

Governor Fayemi said that the present administration would soon commence recruitment of competent and qualified teachers who would help to raise the standard of education in the state.

He said that the administration had commenced the process of returning mission schools to their original owners, but stressed that government would continue to monitor them to ensure that the schools do not decline in standards.

It would be recalled that Fayemi had, shortly after his inauguration in October 2018, declared free education from primary to senior secondary schools in the state.

He also abolished all education levies and the education tax introduced by the immediate past administration in the state.

Legal Battle Looms Between Fashola And Adesanya Over Alleged $600 Million Diversion

Legal battle is looming between the minister of Power, Works and Housing Minister, Babatunde Raji Fashola and Leno Laitan Adesanya of Sunrise Power and Transmission Company Limited over the action of the latter which the minister considered to be injurious to his reputation as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and a public official.

Adesanya had accused Fashola, in series of publications from January 11 to 16, 2019 of attempts to divert about $600 million from the 3050mw Mambilla Hydro Power Project.

A January 17, 2019 letter written by Fashola’s lawyer, Charles Uwensuyi-Edosomwan (SAN), and entitled “Re: Libel and Malicious Publication on Babatunde Raji Fashola, Esq, SAN by Leno Laitan Adesanya in several Tabloids and Online News Portals,” said that Adesanya published grievous, defamatory and injurious words “on or about 11th to 16th January, 2019 under the caption: MABILLA POWER PROJECT – OPEN LETTER TO MR. BABATUNDE FASHOLA (SAN)”.

Fashola’s lawyer declared: “In the said publications to the whole world, you said the following, among many, about our said client or in reference to him:

*alarming and continuous fabrication of facts.

*because of your attempts to divert about $600 million from the 3050mw hydro power project to a pet project not hitherto considered by the FEC.

*why must you run to the NTA or Press if you are not guilty?

*As a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), you must stop peddling falsehood and check your facts before opening your mouth to speak.

*The law profession is for honourable and honest individuals and being a Senior Advocate (SAN) requires more of you.

*however, you have chosen to undermine President Buhari and the North.

*You are misleading His Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari.

*The motivation of your insidious acts has left many puzzled.

*Nigerians have mistaken your eloquence for honour, not realising perversion of the truth is now a recurrence pattern to your diatribe…”

Uwensuyi-Edosomwan declared that with the publications, Adesanya described Fashola as:

*“a dishonest public office who is fraudulent, corrupt, disregarding of his oath of office and disloyal to his President and his country – Nigeria;

*a dishonourable lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, a liar with a perversion for truth;

*an unworthy minister who betrays his country by deploying his tribalism negative bents in sabotaging other parts of Nigeria other than his own parts for unconscionable personal pecuniary gains;

*a sleek conman that uses his gifted eloquence to dishonourable and perverse end, and

*generally, an unpatriotic Nigerian unworthy of public office.

Uwensuyi-Edosomwan, therefore, demanded a complete retraction of the offending publications, a properly-worded unreserved apology for the libel in all the news tabloids and online portals, and pay the sum of N1 billion as pecuniary compensation “for your reckless and mindless injuries to his reputation and credit.”

The lawyer warned Adesanya that he would proceed to initiate legal steps “to bring the full consequences of your recklessness in the aforementioned publications on you” if by the end of 14 days of this letter “any of these listed demands still stands unfulfilled.”

Endorsement Of Atiku By Ohanaeze Is A Slap On Late Nnamdi Azikiwe – Anambra Govt

Governor Willie Obiano

The Anambra State Government again has described the Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo endorsement of the Presidential candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar at the time President Muhammadu Buhari was performing the inauguration of Zik Mausoleum as a slap on late Nnamdi Azikiwe.
”We are particularly angered by the fixing of the said meeting on the same date that President Muhammadu Buhari came to inaugurate Zik Mausoleum in Onitsha. Zik was a great son of Igboland and pioneer patron of Ohanaeze, a nationalist of repute whose past cannot be ignored by any true Igbo man.
”For Ohanaeze leadership to have not send representation for the inauguration let alone holding a meeting on Jan. 24 the same day Zik Mausoleum was inaugurated was bad.”
The Secretary to Anambra State Government, Professor Solo Chukwudebelu, who made these points at a news briefing held at Agulu Lake Hotel in Anaocha Local Government Area, said that Anambra state vehemently opposed to the endorsement of Atiku and asked Ohaneze Ndigbo to rescind its decision.
Professor Solo Chukwudebelu was disturbed that Ohanaeze did not even consult the State government before the decision was taken, adding: “as a constituent member of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Anambra State was not represented in the ‘imeobi’ meeting where the acclaimed decision was reached.”
Professor Chukwudebelu, who was flanked by the state commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, C Don Adinuba; Special Adviser, political to the governor, Chief Ifeatu Obi-Okoye and Mrs. Sally Mbanefo, advised Ohanaeze to remain apolitical.
“As All Progressives Grand Alliance government, we have our presidential standard bearer who we are supporting, yet we are not lording it over all the residents of the state to join the decision of the state.
”People should be allowed to make their choice because we are in democracy, and so that is the path we want Ohanaeze leadership to follow.”
Adinuba who responded to questions from reporters said that since the advent of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, all political endorsement made had adversely affected the development of the Igbos.
He, however, advised Chief Nwodo to in the best interest of the people, rescind the endorsement of Atiku and Obi.
The government’s spokesman said that though the state was not contemplating pulling out of Ohaneze Ndigbo, but that its open condemnation of the endorsement was to set the record straight.
Describing the action as distasteful, Adinuba said that if urgent step is not taking, the development might led to a crack in existing unity among the Ohanaeze body.
