Buhari Campaign Council: Tinubu Is The Big Boss

President Buhari inaugurates APC Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja on 7th Jan 2019

President Muhammadu Buhari has named Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the big boss of his Presidential Campaign Council which he inaugurated in Abuja, the nation’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT), today, Monday.

The President said: “Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who  is my co-chairman, will be fully in charge, and is going to be on 24-hour vigil.

“That is to say, the operational buck of this campaign stops at his table, and I therefore urge all of us in the leadership of this campaign, in the field operations on the campaign trail and in the secretariat to consult with Asiwaju whenever guidance is needed.”

Buhari implored the party leaders to resist being provoked, remain focused and civil in the campaigns.

“Let us engage our citizens on issues and ask for reflection on the comparative difference between 2015 and 2019 on security, economy and corruption and abuse by those entrusted with leadership in Nigeria.

“As we embark on the campaign to secure mandate for the next level, I want to acknowledge the sacrifices and contributions of all stakeholders who have endeavored to keep our party united, and our governance successful.

“I urge members of this formidable team to always keep their eyes on the ball, which is the success of our party at the polls. I wish to appeal to all members to be guided by the enduring vision behind the formation and sustenance of our party, which is anchored, on sacrifice and imperative to salvage and stabilize our great and promising nation.

“I appeal to all our members, and especially those who are in the campaign council, to unite and cooperate and ensure a smooth operation. Needless to add, Directorates could co-opt on full or part-time basic persons who could add value to our campaign and help us to attain success.

“To my mind, the division of responsibility is clear enough. The Leadership that has formulated the campaign policy will supervise its execution; the Director-General will have overall responsibility for all aspects of the campaign, including field operations; while the Secretary will be responsible for all administrative and treasury-related activities of the council.

The President admitted that the campaign ahead will tax the government operatives, as they intend to touch all corners of the country, but that it would not make governance or his work suffer.

4 Military Officers Who Attempted Coup In Gabon Arrested

Four out of the military officers who took over state radio in Gabon a bid to end 50 years of rule by President Ali Bongo’s family in a botched a military coup today, Monday have been arrested

Government spokesman Guy-Bertrand Mapangou said that the fifth officer fled and is being pursued.

In a radio message at 4:30 a.m. (0330 GMT), Lieutenant Kelly Ondo Obiang, who described himself as an officer in the Republican Guard, said Bongo’s New Year’s Eve address from Morocco, where he is recovering from a stroke, “reinforced doubts about the president’s ability to continue to carry out of the responsibilities of his office”.

In one of his first television appearances since he suffered the stroke in Saudi Arabia in October, Bongo, 59, slurred his speech and he appeared unable to move his right arm. It is unclear if he is able to walk. He has been in Morocco since November to continue treatment.

Outside the radio station, loyalist soldiers fired teargas to disperse about 300 people who had come out into the streets to support the coup attempt, a Reuters witness said. Helicopters circled overhead.

Most of the beach side capital was quiet, however, and a government spokesman said the situation was under control after the arrests.

“The government is in place. The institutions are in place,” Mapangou told France 24.

The Bongo family has ruled the oil-producing country since 1967. Bongo has been president since succeeding his father, Omar, who died in 2009. His re-election in 2016 was marred by claims of fraud and violent protest.

The economy was long buoyed by oil revenues, much of which was funneled to the country’s moneyed elite while most of the 2-million population live in deep poverty. In Libreville, expensive western hotels overlook the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the capital’s hillside shanties to the east.

A sharp drop in oil production and prices in recent years has squeezed revenues and stoked discontent. Oil workers’ strikes have become increasingly common in the OPEC member country.

In a tweet on Monday, African Union Commission Chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat condemned the coup attempt.

“I reaffirm the AU’s total rejection of all unconstitutional changes of power,” he said.

In a video circulating on social media, Ondo is seen in a radio studio wearing military fatigues and a green beret as he reads the statement. Two other soldiers with large assault rifles stand behind him.

Ondo said the coup was being carried out by a group called the Patriotic Movement of the Defence and Security Forces of Gabon against “those who, in a cowardly way, assassinated our young compatriots on the night of August 31, 2016,” a reference to deadly violence that erupted after Bongo was declared the winner of the disputed election.

Bongo won the poll by fewer than 6,000 votes, sparking deadly clashes between protesters and police during which the parliament was torched.

The European Union said it found anomalies during the election in Bongo’s stronghold province of Haut-Ogooue, where he won 95 percent on a 99.9 percent turnout.

The military officer said the coup attempt was carried out by one unit under the command of a high-ranking officer but that other units were monitoring the situation.

“President Bongo’s record as defense minister under his father lowers the possibility that current military leadership is supportive of his ouster,” said Judd Devermont, director of the Africa Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

Former colonial power France has a permanent military force of 300 soldiers in Gabon. The United States also sent about 80 soldiers to Gabon last week in response to possible violent demonstrations in Democratic Republic of Congo after a presidential election there.

Bongo and members of his government have faced repeated suspicions by foreign governments of corruption, including allegedly using the American financial system to launder assets. They have denied the accusations.

During his father’s rule, Gabon was a pillar of “La Francafrique”, an intricate, shadowy web of diplomacy, commerce and French military might that kept African autocrats in power and gave French companies privileged access to them.

Gabon’s dollar-denominated sovereign debt tumbled sharply in early trading, with both outstanding bonds losing around 3 cents in the dollar.

Yields spiked to over 9 percent – level last seen on the 2024 bond in late November when oil prices hit their lowest level in over a year. However, prices recovered in late morning trade, with bonds trading around half a cent lower.

Rwandan Ambassador’s Son Wins Nature Photography Contest at AUN

A final-year student of Communications and Multimedia Design (CMD) at the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Mr. Yvan Kamanzi, has emerged as the winner of the just-concluded Birds of AUN competition. Yvan is the son of the Rwandan High Commissioner to Nigeria, H.E. Mr. Satnislas Kamanzi. Software Engineering major, Chukwuma Stephen emerged second-place winner while Assistant Professor of English Mohammed Tristan Purvis, won third place.

AUN President, Dr. Dawn Dekle, who initiated the ‘Birds of AUN Competition,’ announced the winners early December, at the lobby of the Dr. Robert Pastor e-library building. Global conservation watchdog National Geographic had designated 2018 as the Year of the Bird, ‘bringing attention to the threats birds face and reigniting conservation efforts.’

Dr. Dekle had introduced the contest in January after she noticed the many beautiful birds on the campus.

President Dekle, who is leading the university through a strategic sustainability agenda, had challenged students, faculty and staff to watch and photograph ‘the magnificent birds that inhabit our campus,’ and share their observation.

Mentioned in Mr. Kamanzi’s winning entry was the blue-headed Coucal (Centropus monachus), a bird, he said: “chooses to remain aloof.”

“Like all coucals, the blue-headed has very long claws that allow it to feed on tiny insects and amphibians. Their voices are deep with resonant “coo” phrases. They sit upright as they perch and sing on top of trees and branches. They are interesting to watch and do interesting things. The blue-headed Coucal can be found lurking around treetops behind Dorm EE’s open fields and the AUN huts behind the School of Law”.

The winners received N90,000 in cash prizes plus certificates.

Six semi-finalists were recognized, and each received a certificate of participation. They include Cyril Oni, Ifeatu Uzodinma, Jessica Gwadi, Terdoo Orje-Ishegh, Chiedozie Joseph, and Ruth Unde.

Daily Trust Story Threatened National Security, Army Explains Reason For Occupation

The Nigerian Army has explained that soldiers sealed off the headquarters of Media Trust Limited, publisher of Daily Trust and Sunday Trust yesterday, Sunday because it published story that threatened national security.
“Security Agencies were indeed at Abuja and Maiduguri offices of the publishing company to invite the staff of the company over its lead story on Sunday Trust publication, which divulged classified military information, thus undermining national security.”
A statement by the Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman, explaining the reason for invading the two premises of the newspaper company, said that the newspaper disclosed details of planned military operations against the Boko Haram terrorists.
According to the statement, the disclosure of such classified security information amounts to a breach of national security and run contrary to Sections 1 and 2 of the Official Secrets Act.
“It afforded the Boko Haram terrorists prior notice of our plans and giving them early warning to prepare against the Nigerian military, thus sabotaging the planned operations and putting the lives of troops in imminent and clear danger.
“We would like to state that the invitation of those responsible for divulging military plans was done with the best of intention in order to make them realize the import of such acts to our national security. We therefore advice (sic) all, particularly journalists, not to worry but engage in their responsive reportage and to be professional as the Nigerian Army has no intention of muzzling the press or jeopardizing press freedom. We however, wish to enjoin further that they should eschew jeopardizing national security in their reportage. We would not tolerate situation where a publication would consistently side with terrorists and undermine our National institutions.
“We wish to appeal to all, especially the media, to join hands with the Nigerian military and security forces to end terrorism and insurgency in Nigeria. We would like to further assure that the invitation is for further investigation and if need be, all those culpable of jeopardizing operations security will be prosecuted by the relevant law enforcement agency.”

Sealing Of Daily Trust Premises: Federal Government Orders Soldiers Out

Federal Government of Nigeria has directed soldiers who sealed the Abuja headquarters of the Media Trust Limited, publisher of Daily Trust, Sunday Trust and Aminyya (the Hausa version), to vacate it immediately.

The order, according to inside source, was obeyed last night, Sunday, with the soldiers leaving the premises.

In a Tweet by the senior special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu said: “issues between the military and the newspaper (organization) as they affect the coverage of the war in the Northeast will be resolved through dialogue.”

The soldiers, yesterday, took over the premises of the newspaper headquarters, preventing staff and other people from going in or coming out, thereby threatening the production of Monday edition of the newspaper. It was not immediately known why the soldiers took suh action, including arresting the Bureau Chef and a reporter of the newspaper in Maiduguri, the Borno State Capital.

However, sources said that the action of the military might not be unconnected with the news published in the Sunday edition of the newspaper concerning the military’s confrontation with Boko Haran insurgents in the Northeast.

Shortly before the Federal Government directed the military to vacate the premises of the Daily Trust headquarters last night, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba had issued a statement condemning the action of the soldiers.

In a statement, Wabba said: “no explanation is good enough for this extreme action. It is bizarre and represents repression and violation of press freedom.”

The NLC Boss reminded the military that Nigeria is in a democracy and that the media constitute one of the strong institutions in our democracy.

According to him, Daily Trust Group represent some of the best traditions in journalism practice, saying that they are neither associated with sensationalism nor some of the darker side of journalism.

“The arrest of its personnel and shutdown of its  office  portend evil and represent a  throwback to the dark days of the military.

“If the military authorities have issues with the news paper, even if those issues pertain to national security, there are established channels for dealing with them.

“Accordingly, we urge the military to order the immediate release of the detained staff and reopening of the newspaper office.

“In these frighteningly difficult times, the military need more friends than self-made enemies.”

Malaysian King Quits Throne

Malaysian King, Sultan Muhammad V has called it quit today, Sunday after just two years on the throne.

The palace said in a statement that the 49-year-old ruler had resigned as Malaysia’s 15th king with immediate effect, cutting short his five-year term. No reason was given in the statement.

It marked the first abdication in the nation’s history. Sultan Muhammad V, ruler of northeast Kelantan state, took his oath of office in December 2016, becoming one of Malaysia’s youngest constitutional monarchs.

He is said to have married a 25-year-old former Russian beauty queen in November while on a two-month medical leave. Reports in Russian and British media and on social media featured pictures of the wedding, which reportedly took place in Moscow. Neither the sultan, the palace nor the government had officially confirmed the wedding.

Speculation that Sultan Muhammad V would step down emerged this past week, shortly after he returned from his leave, but Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said Friday that he was unaware of any abdication plans.

Under a unique system maintained since Malaysia’s independence from Britain in 1957, nine hereditary state rulers take turns as the country’s king for five-year terms.

The Council of Rulers is expected to meet soon to pick the next king.

The monarch’s role is largely ceremonial, since administrative power is vested in the prime minister and parliament. But the monarch is highly regarded, particularly among the ethnic Malay Muslim majority, as the supreme upholder of Malay tradition.

Servant Leaders Are Disappearing In Nigeria, Bishop Alex Regrets

Bishop Alex Ibezim

The Bishop of Awka diocese of Anglican Communion, in Anambra State, Bishop Alex Ibezim, has openly regretted that servant leaders like Nehemiah in the Bible are fast disappearing from Nigerian.

The Bishop, who officiated at an interdenominational service and reception organized for Peter Obi, the running mate to Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today, Sunday, said that what Nigeria needs at the moment are servant leaders to salvage it.

“We lack leaders like Nehemiah. Nehemiah served in the kings palace, but didn’t take pay for the work he did. We need leaders like Nehemiah. Nehemiahs are fast disappearing in Nigeria. We must pray for God to give us God fearing leaders through this election.

“Nehemiah was comfortable in the kings palace, but he was more concerned about the welfare of the people of Jerusalem. Nigeria is characterised by war, hunger, and all manner if afflictions. All politicians here must know that and work to redeem her.”

This was even as Peter Obi assured that leaders of the party in the Southeast region are working as one family.

“Let me tell you all, PDP in the south east are working as one family, and when the votes are turned in, you will all see it. We are working as one, one family.”

He promised that as vice president, he would ensure that major roads in the Southeast are completed as against the propaganda being peddled by the APC government.

Buhari Cannot Order Arrest Of Anybody- Presidency

Shehu Garba

The Presidency has said that President Muhammadu Buhari has never been in the habit of ordering the arrest of anybody.

According to the Presidency, the press release in circulation in the last 24 hours, to the effect that President Buhari has ordered the arrest and prosecution of Amaju Pinnick, the NFF Chairman, is fake news.

In a statement today, Sundat, the senior special assistant to the President on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, said that anyone familiar with the President’s unmitigated and unshakable commitment to the due processes of the law will not make such assumptions of the President.

“The position of the President that allegations of criminal nature should be addressed only by investigation and law enforcement agencies, within the framework of the law has not changed.

“It is not in the nature of President Buhari to say go and arrest that man or woman as formed the practice in the past.

“Rather, he allows all allegations of this nature to be addressed using the mechanism of the rule of law even as law enforcement and investigation agencies should not in any way be hampered in performing their duties.

“At the same time, nobody should drop names to seek to influence the course of those investigations.”

President Buhari Has No Opponent In February Election – Presidency

“There is no doubt that the President has no competition here in terms of popularity in the coming elections. But the more support he gets, the wider the margin of victory there will be.”

This was the verdict of the Presidency, in a statement by the presidential spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu who assured other candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming elections.

Garba Shehu stressed that President Buhari will campaign for all APC candidates, but will welcome support and endorsements.

He said that the clarification is being made as a result of repeated media enquiries on the matter.

“The Presidency wishes to state in clear and unmistakable terms that as a party leader and a candidate on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the coming elections, President Muhammadu Buhari will campaign for the party and all its candidates.

“This however does not mean that he, as the nation’s leader, will decline courtesy calls or offers of support from citizens including candidates flying the flags of other parties.”
