No fewer than 19 people have been killed and 219 others injured today, Thursday, in a protest staged by the citizens of Sudan over increase in the price of bread.
Angry crowds have taken to the streets in Khartoum and several other cities since December 19 when the government tripled the price of bread
Report reaching us said that the Sudanese anti-riot police clashed with the protesters, who are demonstrating against a rise in bread price with 19 people, including two security force personnel, killed in the process.
Government spokesman, Boshara Juma, speaking on state television, confirmed that 19 people lost their lives in the incidents, including two from security forces, adding that 219 people were wounded.
Sudanese authorities had previously said that eight people have been killed in clashes in Khartoum and several other cities since the protests began on December 19.
Sudan Islamist party urges probe into the killing of protesters
Sudan’s top Islamist party, a member of President Omar al-Bashir’s government, called Wednesday for a probe into the killings of protesters in demonstrations that have rocked the economically troubled country.
At a press conference in Khartoum, Popular Congress Party senior official, Idris Suleman said that his party’s own reports indicated that 17 people “were martyred” and 88 wounded in the demonstrations.
Condemning the killings, the party, founded by late Islamist leader, Hassan Turabi, urged the authorities to find those responsible.
“We call on the government to launch an investigation into the killings,” Suleman said.
“Those who committed these killings must be held accountable.”
Popular Congress Party is part of Bashir’s government and has two ministers of state in the cabinet and seven lawmakers in parliament.
Turabi, who died in March 2016, was a leading force behind the 1989 coup that brought Bashir to power, ushering in an Islamist regime that hosted Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden from 1992 to 1996 in Sudan.
Turabi founded Popular Congress Party after he was dismissed from Bashir’s National Congress Party amid a power struggle a decade after the coup.
Police and security officers remained deployed in several parts of the Sudanese capital on Wednesday, but no new demonstration had been staged so far.
Bashir has sought to tamp down the discontent by vowing to “take real reforms” to solve Sudan’s economic woes.
But his statements appear to have done little to appease protesters angered by financial hardships.
Sudan is mired in economic difficulties including an acute foreign currency shortage and soaring inflation.
The crisis has worsened despite the lifting of an economic embargo by the United States in October 2017.
Inflation is running at close to 70 percent and the Sudanese pound has plunged in value, while shortages in bread and fuel have been reported across several cities including Khartoum.
Since the start of the protest movement, Sudanese authorities had arrested several anti-government figures with liberal and communist backgrounds.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has said that its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar is a saint who enjoys poplar acceptance of Nigerians as their next President, come 2019.
In a statement today, Thursday, by PDP’s spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan said that Atiku had been absorbed of all allegations of fraud by the Chairman Buhari’s Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Professor Itse Sagay and the United States Department of Justice after a thorough investigation.
“It is however unfortunate that President Buhari will resort to sponsoring fabrications and false allegations against Atiku Abubakar just because he is overwhelmed by Atiku’s soaring popularity and acceptance by Nigerians as their next President, come 2019.
“We wish to remind President Buhari, who has been unleashing his aides to attack our Presidential candidate, that Atiku Abubakar has never been charged, indicted nor convicted for any act of corruption by any competent authority whatsoever.
“Moreover, President Buhari has been in office for almost four years and has never found anything incriminatory on Atiku Abubakar that can warrant his prosecution despite being hounded under the Buhari administration.
“Perhaps, Mr. President needs to be reminded that even the Chairman of his Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay, after their detailed scrutiny, announced that they found no evidence of corruption against Atiku Abubakar and consequently absolved him of all allegations.
“Furthermore, the United States Department of Justice had, in response to enquiry by a leading Nigerian newspaper in November of 2016, stated that, after scrutiny of public records, that there is no criminal case against Atiku Abubakar contrary to fabrications being promoted by the Buhari Presidency.
“Nigerians can also recall that on December 22, 2014, President Buhari in praising Atiku Abubakar’s immense business acumen, through which he provided employment opportunities for thousands of Nigerians, described him as an “inspiration” and a man that has rendered ‘great service to Nigeria’.
“Besides, because of President Buhari’s limited exposure, corrupt tendencies and manifest managerial incompetence, he is always fixated in his myopic creed that nobody can be successful except through corrupt enrichment.
“It is therefore unfortunate that President Buhari has now resorted to sponsoring fabrications and false allegations against Atiku Abubakar just because he has become overwhelmed by Atiku’s soaring popularity and acceptance by Nigerians as their next President, come 2019.
“We are aware that all the shenanigans being employed by the Buhari Presidency are designed to divert attention from the main issue of President Buhari’s woeful failure and the corruption in his Presidency.”
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has raised an alarm over moves by some politicians to purchase of Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs), in order to rig the 2019 general elections.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), in Oyo State, Barrister Mutiu Agboke who made this revelation while delivering his keynote address at a one-day seminar organized for online journalists in the state, however gave assurance that such politicians would not be allowed to succeed.
Barrister Agboke did not however give the identity of the politicians and political party involved, but said that the Commission will stop at nothing to ensure smooth elections, devoid of crisis.
He stressed that no staff of the commission will sell PVCs to any politician.
“They are looking for PVCs to buy. They are looking for what is not available because they know that these things are not available. This is the security report at my disposal.
“Tell those who are looking for PVCs to buy that there is none to buy in Oyo state. I can assure you that no INEC staff will sell PVCs to any politician. I can assure you that the process will be free in Oyo state.
“Those who are looking for PVCs to buy, I won’t give you the name. I don’t have the name.
“But, that is the security report I got and the report did not specify the party and the individual that is involved. They want us to give them PVCs but we can’t give it to them. They want to buy PVCs but there is none to sell in Oyo state.”
Barrister Agboke advised journalists in the state to cooperate with the commission in spreading accurate information to members of the public.
“All of us are stakeholders; if you are in doubt call INEC. More so, you are online journalists, let us ensure that we have our facts correct.”
The Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, has asked the electorate in the state to vote for him as a senatorial candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and for President Muhammadu Buhari but not for the APC governorship candidate in the state.
Governor Ibikunle, who flagged off his campaign for a senatorial seat today, Thursday at Panseke in Abeokuta, the state capital, asked the electorate not to vote for the governorship candidate of APC, Dapo Abiodun, but vote for Adekunle Akinlade, who is now the governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
“I am a victim of envy, forgetting that God owns our lives, and they are playing god. They have even started planning for the presidency ahead of the far away 2023 political dispensation. Who knows who will be alive tomorrow?”
Governor Amosun has been at loggerheads with the national leadership of the party following his failure to secure the governorship ticket for Adekunle Akinlade.
Akinlade and other aides of the embittered governor later moved to APM while governor Amosun remained in the APC.
Only recently, the national leadership of the APC, led by Adams Oshiomhole, dissolved the Ogun state executive of the party, saying that they could not be trusted to work for the party as they are loyalists of governor Amosun.
The leadership of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), has resolved that 20 million members of the group across Nigeria will vote enmass for the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 election.
The organization, which endorsed Buhari at its 5th Annual General meeting, held today, Thursday in Abuja, said that the administration of Buhari has impacted positively on the lives of their members.
The National Secretary of MACBAN, Alhaji Baba Uthman Ngelzarma, who addressed news men after the Congress, said that the decision to support President Buhari was a decision at the Congress, adding that their members, numbering over 20 million in Nigeria took the collective decision.
“We represent over 20 million members across the country, here in attendance we have over 2000 people who have come from all corners of the country, we have representatives from each local governments, and you heard their view, they have declared their interest on Muhammadu Buhari to move to the next level, this is the majority decision of the Congress, we as leaders, we don’t have option other than to follow.
“MACBAN frowns at the sensational and negative stereotyping of herders who are doing a legitimate economic activity that contributes to the gross domestic product of the country and ensuring food security.”
He called on the present government to stamp out cases of impunity in relation to the killings of innocent citizens who are caught in the conflict.
President Muhammadu Buhari is scheduled to flag-off his South-South zonal Presidential campaign in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital tomorrow, Friday.
According to the Akwa Ibom state Coordinator of the Presidential Support Committee, Pastor Mfon Okon, preparations are in top gear to ensure a hitch-free zonal flag-off, which will be held at the Godswill Akpabio international stadium, Uyo.
He called on the people of the state to fully key into national politics by supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC) to return the President, and ensure that the party wins Akwa Ibom State in 2019.
He announced that President Buhari has appointed former Senate Minority leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio as the National Coordinator of the Presidential Support Committee
Pastor Okon gave the names of others who were appointed into the committee from the state include a former deputy governor of the state, Lady Valerie Ebe, as chairman of the National Advisory Committee; Senator John Akpanudoedehe, National Director – Planning & Strategy, Senator Aloysius Etok – National Director for inter-party affairs, and the party’s South-South zonal woman leader, Mrs. Rachael Akpabio as the National Assistant Welfare Secretary.
He said that the appointments were a reflection of the confidence President Buhari reposed on their ability to successfully work for his re-election in the forthcoming presidential election.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) resumed from the Christmas and Boxing Day breaks by injecting the sum of $210 million in the wholesale segment and other sectors of the market to boost inter-bank sector of the Foreign Exchange market.
Figures released by the Bank today, Thursday indicated that the Wholesale sector of the market got another injection of $100 million, while the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and invisibles sectors each received $55 million.
The Director of Corporate Communications Department in the apex bank, Isaac Okorafor said that the forex interventions is part of the Bank’s resolve to sustain the high level of stability in the Forex market and ease access to the currency by customers in the different sectors.
He lauded actors in various sectors of the forex market for the level of stability, in spite of activities of speculators, and assured that the CBN will continue to play its interventionist role in the market.
It will be recalled that the CBN, in its last interventions earlier in December, injected the sum of $299.82 million and CNY 143.60 million into the Retail Secondary Market Intervention Sales (SMIS).
Meanwhile, one United States Dollar (US$1) exchanged for N360 in the Bureau De Change (BDC) segment of the market today, Thursday.
The Presidency has described a statement credited to the Presidential candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar criticizing President Buhari’s 2019 budget proposal as an a poor attempt at playing to the gallery.
“Atiku describes the underlying assumptions of the budget as generous, wild and untenable but does not propose alternative assumptions that would have been more appropriate. He argues that the economy is yet to recover from the 2016/2017 recession. Unfortunately, he cannot create his own definition of an economic recession, which is a technical term with a universally applicable meaning.”
In a statement today, Thursday, the special adviser to the President on media and publicity, Femi Adesina said: “Atiku’s criticism of the 2019 budget proposal can best be described as high on populist rhetoric but low on any real solutions to the identified challenges.”
Adesina referred to Atiku’s statement describing the budget as fundamentally flawed and failing to address current realities, saying that the said “current realities” he referred to were issues that have already highlighted in President Buhari’s budget speech and were further amplified in the detailed presentation by the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma.
“Regrettably, however, Atiku Abubakar offers no substantive and workable solution to the identified “realities”.
“When an economy experiences two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth, it is said to be in recession and whenever it returns to positive GDP growth of whatever rate, it is said to have exited recession. It is doubtful if he understands the simple meaning of recession.
“Atiku attributes the sustained accretion to foreign reserves to “increases in international prices of Brent Crude and foreign borrowing”. But he conveniently forgets that under the immediate past federal administration oil prices were at an all-time high with substantial growth in foreign borrowings, and yet foreign reserves nose-dived from a peak of $62 billion to as low as $24 billion. His repeated reference to the price of Brent Crude throughout his statement may be indicative of his lack of knowledge that Nigeria’s Bonny Light Crude trades at a premium of at least $2 per barrel over the price of Brent; just as his reference to Nigeria’s OPEC quota may also suggest that he does not know that Condensates do not count in measuring compliance with the quota.
“The PDP Presidential candidate faults the provision of N305 billion for NNPC’s cost under-recovery on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) but does not say exactly what he would do about PMS pricing. If however we are to go by an earlier statement from his campaign organisation, which promised to reduce the price of petrol to N87, then we can expect a much higher subsidy provision from an Atiku government; because he is not going to perform magic to get the refineries working at peak capacity immediately.
“He describes the 2019 budget as being very small, but does not offer any implementable options for improving domestic resource mobilization, which is the only sustainable means to achieving larger budgets. It does seem that he does not understand or is just feigning ignorance about the critical role of revenue in budget preparation.
“A careful look at Atiku’s statement would show that there is nothing original about his identified “realities.” These are areas President Buhari had already identified in his speech. For instance, the President recognised that the revenue performance of the Federal Government up till September 2018 has been less than spectacular. Leaving aside for a moment the fact that there has been a remarkable increase in Federal Account receipts in the last three months, a look at the budget speech will show that the President specified a number of actions to tackle revenue weakness including strengthening on-going efforts at tax collection, liquidation of recovered assets, immediate recovery of past due oil royalties charges and deployment of the National Trade Window to improve customs collections.
“His most laughable criticism perhaps was his claim that “there is little evidence to show that increased investment in agriculture has yielded positive results”. Even the worst adversary of the Buhari administration would acknowledge that significant progress has been made in the agriculture sector.
“In his often desperate attempt to rubbish the 2019 budget, Atiku conflates foreign direct investment with capital inflows. This is wrong as capital inflows covers foreign direct investment, foreign portfolio investments, international borrowing and short-term deposits in money market instruments. He complains about movements in foreign portfolio investment which are often volatile and reflect monetary policy normalisation in the United States, meanwhile he is silent on the positive trade surplus mentioned in the budget speech which truly reflects living within our means as a nation.
“Atiku also calculates the budget deficit as a percentage of current revenue rather than as a ratio of gross domestic product which is the preferred standard for inter-temporal measures of the deficit. Using this more appropriate measure the national fiscal deficit is 1.3% of GDP which is well below the 3% specified in the Fiscal Responsibility Act and well within the best global norms. So much for those who claim they have the magic wand to grow the economy.
“A most glaring weakness in the statement by Atiku is that he does not take a stance on issues of public interest in the budget, which is utterly regrettable from someone who aspires to lead Nigeria. As President Buhari explained, the subsidy/under-recovery has been retained to reduce the burden on ordinary Nigerians at a time of weak purchasing power in a manner that avoids the abuses of the past. The truth is that contrary to the belief of people like Atiku that low fuel prices only benefit the rich, a large number of ordinary Nigerians rely on PMS to operate ‘keke’, ‘okada’, taxi, and ‘danfo’. A lot of the generators used by small businesses also use PMS. Indeed, it is amazing that a man who has promised N87 per litre of PMS can criticise a process of under-recovery/subsidy that is not being abused as it was in the past.
“To further show Atiku’s lack of knowledge about basic issues in the petroleum market, he contradicts himself in his quest to make a non-existent point. He complains about the benchmark price of $60 per barrel used for crude oil exports in the budget and tries hard to show understanding of the dynamics of the global oil market by referring to US shale oil production and pressures on the Saudi regime. Yet Atiku expects that OPEC quotas will come into force, in which case the price of crude oil may rise in international markets. What is obvious is the fact that low oil prices impact negatively on shale oil production. For instance, recent reports from a Permian producer show that with West Texas Intermediate at near $45 per barrel, they have already cut back on rig count and use of completion crews. There is more over the demand side which remains extremely strong in the United States, while large economies like China and India will continue to grow at over 6% and 7% respectively in 2019, which will also impact on crude oil prices.
“Finally, Atiku moans about the capital budget without acknowledging the historically high capital expenditure over the past two budget cycles continuing into the current 2018 budget cycle. Apart from the fact that the Federal Government has kept to its promise to keep capital expenditure at 30% of the budget, the PDP Presidential candidate is quiet about his plans to raise capital expenditure and reduce recurrent spending. The reality is that it can only be done by retrenching public sector workers and by not increasing the minimum wage to which this government is fully committed.
“It is therefore obvious that Atiku’s statement on the budget was a poor attempt at playing to the gallery. Without a doubt, the country faces significant fiscal challenges. The administration of President Buhari understands these challenges, as well as workable solutions thereto. The implementation of some of the solutions however needs to be paced and well-timed to avoid dislocating the growth trajectory of the economy.”
The Presidency has responded to allegation made by the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on the $322 Million that was recovered from Abacha’s family recently.
“The USD 322m recovered is being used to make the Conditional Cash Transfer, CCT of a monthly amount of N5,000 to more than 300,000 poor homes across the nation under the Social Investment Program introduced by the Buhari administration. This is in line with the Memorandum of Understanding, signed between the governments of Nigeria and Switzerland as a condition for releasing the funds.”
In a statement today, Wednesday by the senior special assistant to the President on media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu said that as part of the MoU, the World Bank is monitoring the application of the funds.
Malam Garba Shehu said that the World Bank has also given an additional facility to support the on-going cash transfers.”
The Presidential spokesman said that the PDP has continued to spread lies about the Buhari administration in the mistaken assumption that its toga of corruption will dissipate if it succeeded in black painting every other person as corrupt.
“The strategy is to make corruption appear as normative and that everyone is equally involved. They think by so doing, Nigerians will forgive them for their sins. This is a huge mistake.”
He described the PDP as an ill-wind on the country today and that the elections next year present the citizens an excellent opportunity to save the country from it.
“We can’t imagine a sane organization shamelessly telling Nigerians that President Buhari is looting, as they themselves did of the recovered loot, the USD 322m lately recovered from the Abacha family. This is an irresponsible lie.
“Nigerians are hereby advised to be watchful of what comes out from the opposition, not to be misled into voting for a party that sees nothing wrong with corruption and would rather have everyone drenched in its colors, as they irretrievably are.”
Director of Strategic Communications for President Muhammadu Buhari Campaign Organization, Festus Keyamo has made it clear that if the system in Nigeria had been working properly before 2015 when Buhari took over the rein of government, the Presidential candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar would have been serving a jail term now, instead of contesting for Presidency.
Reacting to Atiku’s statement disputing the assertion by President Buhari that the system in Nigeria allows corruption to thrive because the system is slow in tackling corruption, Keyamo reminded Atiku that he is one of the greatest beneficiaries of the failed system in tackling corruption that was in place before President Buhari took over in 2015.
“We know he is aware of this, hence his latest diatribe against President Muhammadu Buhari amounts to nothing but disgusting grandstanding and an attempt to mock the system. “If the system in Nigeria was indeed working, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar would not have acquired substantial shares in INTELS in clear conflict of his duties as a Customs Officer whilst in office. Those shares would have belonged to the Nigerian people by now. “If the system in Nigeria was indeed working, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar would not have run a monopolistic company called INTELS all these years, ripping off the Nigerian people and the Nigerian State before Muhammadu Buhari came and broke that monopoly. “If the system was working, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar would have been prosecuted and jailed for various acts of corruption and abuse of office after he left office as Vice President, some of which are: “(a) For himself and his boss, President Olusegun Obasanjo, granting themselves licenses to build universities as President and Vice President whilst in office in clear breach of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers. Those Universities would have been probed, seized and transferred to the Nigeria State and the Nigerian people by now. “(b) Laundering slush funds to the United States of America using phony companies, part of which was used to fund his present American University in Adamawa State through which he is also extorting Nigerians through exorbitant fees. It is public knowledge that this indictment is contained in a US Congressional Report that has led to the prosecution and conviction of his accomplices in the US, which are William Jefferson and Siemens. They were convicted under a system that works, whilst he has been walking free in Nigeria and even aspiring to the highest office in the land. It is also public knowledge that his ban from entering the United States was as a result of these indictments. “(c) His indictment and recommendation for prosecution by the Report of the EFCC over the PTDF scandal whilst he was Vice President. “We have also read with keen interest the case filed against Alhaji Atiku Abubakar by some public spirited Nigerians alleging that he never paid his Personal Income Taxes as at when due, yet he wants to ‘get Nigeria working again’. In this regard, we are also challenging Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to publicly display his Personal Income Tax receipts for the 3 years preceding 2018 to show that he did not just run to FIRS in 2018 to pay his backlog of Personal Income Taxes. “For the information of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, President Muhammadu Buhari’s gallant efforts in tackling corruption headlong has led to the conviction of the President’s own party men and ex Governors who served under PDP and for acts they committed whilst in PDP. 703 persons and institutions have been convicted by the EFCC under the watch of President Muhammadu Buhari since 2015. The biggest recoveries of stolen public funds in the history of Nigeria are being carried out by President Muhammadu Buhari. These recoveries were made from principally his party men who now wish to lead Nigeria with him. Some of these recoveries/seizures/forfeitures (interim and final) are: “(a) 407 Mansions since 2015. “(b) N794 Billion, over $261 Million Dollars, 1.1 Million Pounds Sterling, 8.1 Million Euros, “(c) 259 Automobiles. “(d) A fully functional hospital, St. Solomon Health Care Centre at 24, Adeniyi Jones Street, Ikeja Lagos e.t.c. “There are so many other instances too numerous to mention. These are a world apart from the few instances of the reluctant fight against corruption that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar claimed happened under his watch as Vice President. During his time, there was a competition for corruption between himself, his boss and public officers. “We also urge the PDP to stop making wild, unsubstantiated allegations of corruption without a modicum of proof. We have no time to respond to any allegation by the PDP without the backing of some kind of document or proof. When we see some scintilla of proof, we shall respond appropriately. And that is how we have treated the recent allegation of acquisition of shares in Etisalat and Keystone Bank by some supposed ‘family members’ of the President. No name was mentioned and no document was shown. “Alhaji Atiku Abubakar latest adventure in trying to stand shoulder-to-shoulder in matters of integrity with President Muhammadu Buhari is a political suicide mission from which we thought his handlers would have tried to steer him away. But alas! They have decided to test the waters. Locally and internationally President Muhammadu Buhari stands several miles away from Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in matters of integrity. When the President used all his life in public office building a reputation and a name, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar used all his life in public office to build mansions and acquire personal wealth. Now Judgment Day has come when the credentials needed by the Nigerian people for the highest office are not the buildings and wealth but the simple quality of integrity. “Alhaji Atiku Abubakar cannot eat his cake and have it.”
