The Guardian newspaper has concluded that an image shared online by opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to show Nigerian soldiers killed by Boko Haram in an attack on a military base in Metele, Borno State, is fake and misleading.
“After a series of checks of the image of several dead soldiers lying on the ground uploaded by PDP is not only phoney but also fake as it does not relate to Boko Haram or Nigeria.
“Our findings showed that the image was snapped by a photography stringer for Associated Press at Elasha Biya, Somalia.
“The image was published by the Associated Press on October 20, 2011, to show Al-Shabab militants displaying the bodies of men they claimed were African Union peacekeepers killed in Somalia.”
On November 18, a faction of Boko Haram, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), attacked the 157 Task Force Battalion and killed scores of Nigerian troops.
The Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, on Wednesday said only 23 soldiers were killed and also put the number of troops wounded in action at 31.
While there were no official casualty figures of the attack until after ten days, some media outlets, including London-based newswire Reuters, reported that over 100 soldiers were killed.
While reacting to the brutal attack, PDP shared on its official Twitter page a press statement accompanied with an image of President Muhammadu Buhari and an image of several dead Soldiers laid on the ground.
As at the report time, the tweet which is still up on PDP Twitter account, has 1,155 Retweets and 1,618 Likes.
Emir of Deba in Gombe State has suspended the district heads of Garin Mallam, Alhaji Julde and that of Wajari, Ummaru Bappayo for reasons which the suspended traditional rulers said bothered on prayers they offered for President Muhammadu Buhari against the 2019 general elections.
The rulers confirmed that their suspension was as a result of the fact they invited prominent Islamic scholars to offer special prayers for President Buhari.
A letter of suspension written in Hausa language and signed by the acting secretary of the emirate, Saidu Mele, states that the traditional rulers were suspended from office with effect from November 23.
It reads: I have been directed to inform you that as from today ( 23/11/2018), his Royal Highness the Emir of Deba has suspended you from serving as district head because of some terrible reasons.
“You are, therefore, expected to cease carrying out any function as a traditional ruler immediately.”
Although the letter did not mention the specific offence the traditional rulers committed, one of the suspended rulers, Alhaji Julde confirmed that they organized the prayer session as a “normal zikr” but that they usually use such occasions to pray for the leaders.
“It’s true we were suspended for organizing Zikr and praying for our dear president. I don’t know what is wrong with that.”
Julde believed that the Emir of Deba was directed by the state government to order their suspension.
He added that the decision to suspend them was taken after a meeting of “top political leaders” in the area. He said he believes Mr Dankwambo ordered their suspension.
Gombe is one of only two states in the North-east governed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after incumbent governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo, won re-election in 2015.
Governor Dankwambo sought to be the PDP presidential candidate in the party’s primaries but lost to Atiku Abubakar who is from neighbouring Adamawa State.
Dankwambo has, however, pledged his support to Atiku.
The Commissioner for Information in the state, Umar Nafada, denied knowledge of the suspension, saying: “it is not true but I will confirm and get back to you. Thanks.”
Former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Allison-Madueke
Former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke is scheduled to go on trial before a Federal High Court, Abuja, for conspiracy and gratifications.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), today, Monday, got leave of the court to commence her trial, along with a former Chairman of Atlantic Energy Drilling company, Olajide Omokore, beginning from February 25, next year.
The suspects are to be arraigned for allegedly accepting and giving gifts of properties described as penthouse 22, Block B, Admiralty Estate, Ikoyi, and penthouse 21, building 5, block C, Banana Island, Lagos.
Alison-Madueke and Omokore are to be arraigned on five counts bordering on conspiracy and illegal act of accepting and giving gratifications.
Diezani had last year said: “let me re-state categorically as I have always maintained, for the record, I have not and will never steal money from or defraud the Federal Government of Nigeria, Diezani said in a statement last year in response to several allegations of financial impropriety levelled against her by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
“I am willing to respond to charges brought against me that follow duly laid down procedures.”
She said that the anti-graft agency was taking advantage of her silence to try and convict her in the media hence her response.
Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, today, Monday, flagged off his Presidential campaign in Sokoto, capital of Sokoto state.
He is flanked by his running mate and former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi (far left); Senate President, Bukola Saraki; former President Goodluck Jonathan (far right) and the National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus.
Nigerian Oil marketers have issued a seven-day ultimatum, demanding the Federal Government to settle their outstanding debts, totaling N800 billion.
In a statement today, Sunday in Lagos, the oil marketers said that they would shut down depots, thus disrupting fuel distribution, should the government fail to comply.
The marketers, made up of Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association and Independent Petroleum Products Importers, IPPI, said that they would make fuel distribution impossible nationwide.
Legal Adviser to IPPI. Patrick Etim, said that banks have taken over investments and assets of oil marketers over unpaid debts, adding that the marketers have no choice than to ask their workers to stay at home over unpaid salary arrears due to huge subsidy debts owed by the government.
“The only way to salvage the situation is for government to pay the oil marketers the outstanding debts through cash option instead of promissory note being proposed.
“As I speak, nothing has been done several months after assurances received by government saying it would pay off the outstanding debts.
“The oil marketers have requested that forex differential and interest component of government’s indebtedness to marketers be calculated up to December 2018 and be paid within next seven days from the date of the letter sent to the government.
”Etim said that several thousand jobs were on the line in the industry, as oil marketers begin to cut-down their workforce due to inability to pay salaries.
“At the inception of the current administration, marketers engaged the government with the view to secure approval for all outstanding subsidy-induced debts handed over to the current administration.”
The counsel said that the current administration paid part of the debts with a substantial portion of the subsidy interest and foreign exchange differential still pending.
The Executive Secretary of DAPPMA, Olufemi Adewole, confirmed the ultimatum notice and said that the oil marketers on November 28 served the ultimatum letter on the Debt Management Office, Minister of Finance, Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum Downstream, Department of State Services and Minister of State, Petroleum Resources.

Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has expressed disgust over a situation where Nigeria now faces what he called “horrible tragedy”of choosing between two undesirable Presidential candidates from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar and the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 election.
Bishop Onaiyekan, who spoke today, Sunday on the topic: “The Church in Politics: Towards the election year 2019” at an event organized by Catholic Action Nigeria in Abuja, said that Nigeria is deeply in a great dilemma as it move towards the 2019 election.
“ It would appear that we are faced with the horrible tragedy of a choice between two well-known undesirable candidates. This is not only because both of them are Muslims but because we have seen both and we have no reason to be enthusiastic that they will do wonders.
“Where is the alternative? It is a pity that they cannot come together to form a viable alternative. In my opinion, this is mainly because of selfishness.
“Everybody wants to be President and wield power. No one wants to step down and join hands with others of like minds. We need to pray that there will be a way forward. We have to seriously tackle the evil of selfishness.”
The Archbishop said however that the seeming absence of a viable alternative should not be an excuse for Nigerians to lose interest in the coming elections, adding: “if we do lose interest, others are busy working.
“All that it takes for evil to thrive is for the righteous people to keep quiet and do what they call ‘minding their own business’ which means doing nothing! The business of politics in the months ahead is the business of each and every one of us.”
Ordinarily, it would have been morally wrong for any political party in Imo State to field anyone from Orlu senatorial zone as governorship candidate in the 2019 election. Such choice(s) would not have accorded with the principles of equity, justice and good conscience. The reason is simple: Orlu zone has occupied the seat of governor for almost sixteen years since 1999.
To be clear, Achike Udenwa from Orlu zone was governor from 1999 to 2007. Ikedi Ohakim, from Okigwe senatorial zone, was governor from 2007 to 2011. The incumbent governor, Rochas Okorocha, also from Orlu Zone, has been governor from 2011. His tenure will expire on May 29, 2019. The reality of this power arrangement has marginalised Owerri senatorial zone in the power game.
Watchers of political developments in Imo had expected Okorocha to use the enormity of his office to ensure equity by guiding the position to Owerri zone in 2019. What he should have done, in the circumstance, since he was possibly looking for someone who would give him protection once out of office, was to invest his trust in a member of his All Progressives Congress (APC), from Owerri zone.
But he decided to defy the political consciousness of the people by attempting to elongate the dominance of Orlu in the consummation of the ultimate governorship deal in the State. Perhaps, just perhaps, had Okorocha endorsed someone without filial connection with him from Orlu zone, someone with the requisite qualities, the people could have managed with that decision. Okorocha did not consider anyone, other than his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, from Orlu, trustworthy enough to enjoy his huge support.
He unconscionably scorned the equitable path by discounting the right of Owerri zone. He imprudently resorted to the gambit of producing his son-in-law in what Imo people and watchers of the political development in the State have described as a brazen attempt to build Rochas Okorocha’s political dynasty in the State.
From the outset of the perfidious decision to install his son-in-law as his successor, prominent leaders of the APC in the State had indicated their revulsion. The leadership of the APC and the Presidency, according to a grapevine, were also very much uncomfortable with the decision. They reportedly conducted independent assessment of the situation to determine the popularity of Okorocha’s decision and its ramifications if he succeeded in pushing it through. The outcome, as confirmed, would be disastrous for the APC.
A vast majority of Imo people had made up their mind that they would not vote for the APC if Okorocha foisted his son-in-law as the party’s governorship candidate. But prior to the primary election, the APC in Imo had passed through a tortuous historical trajectory. There was protracted resistance within its fold. A coalition of party leaders started the resistance in the era of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun as national chairman.
The coalition took over the structure of the party from Okorocha. It is common knowledge that Okorocha was, at the time, running helter-skelter in Abuja in search for help. But for the new national chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, who intervened and returned the control of the party to him, Okorocha would have long been rendered politically irrelevant. To be sure, the formidable coalition that took the wind off Okorocha’s sail comprised Senator Ifeanyi Araraume, Senator Hope Uzodinma, Senator Ben Uwajumogu, Senator Osita Izunaso and the State’s Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere, among others.
Hardly had Oshiomhole made it possible for Okorocha to assume control of the party structure when he pushed ahead, this time round, more forcefully, about his son-in-law being his successor. Okorocha might have erroneously thought that Oshiomhole would be available to put his imprimatur on his odious plot to build a political dynasty in Imo. But, he was clearly mistaken!
Interestingly, before the internal opposition to Okorocha’s gambit became trenchant, Araraume had left the APC for the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) where he picked the governorship ticket. Senator Osita Izunaso had also left for APGA where he picked the ticket for Orlu Senatorial Zone. He will be contesting against Okorocha who holds the APC ticket in the zone.
The withdrawal of Araraume and Izunaso from APC somewhat discounted the strength of the internal opposition against Okorocha, but it is to the credit of Senator Uzodinma that he remained in the APC to challenge the imperial and incumbency powers of Okorocha. Uzodinma practically snatched victory from the jaws of political death, which the confrontation with Okorocha typified. He survived against the limitless resources at the disposal of the State Government under Okorcha’s suzerainty.
By that development, APC has been saved from Okorocha’s stranglehold. Beyond that, too, Imo State has been saved from the looming superintendence by proxy that Okorocha and his burgeoning political dynasty would have foisted on Imo. Although, there are indications that Okorocha’s allies may have been prodded by him to move to another party while he remains in the APC on which platform he is contesting the senate election, it is clear that he is out to work against his party, the APC, and its governorship candidate, Uzodinma.
Regardless, Uzodinma remains the hope of the APC in the forthcoming governorship election. The popularity and gravitas of the Onwa Oyoko (traditional title of Uzodinma) have soared in recent times after he clinically dismantled the famed political machine of Okorocha in a whiff of partisan frenzy and strategic political moves that have left the camp of the Owelle helplessly gasping for breath.
Indeed, the form, shape, texture and content of the governorship race in Imo have already crystallized: it is going to be a three-horse race among Uzodinma of the APC, Araraume of the APGA and Hon. Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Interestingly, the three of them are from Orlu, Okigwe and Owerri zones respectively. That configuration essentially reduces the race to a game of numbers.
Uzodinma’s Orlu Zone has the highest voter-population with twelve local government areas, followed by Ihedioha’s Owerri Zone with nine local government areas and Ararume’s Okigwe Zone with six local government areas. Traditionally, the votes from Orlu zone have always, somewhat, decided the winner of the governorship election. It thus goes without saying that given the popularity and acceptability of Uzodinma by his Orlu people, he is most likely to get their support to retain the plum post in the zone.
The issue of morality that this is likely to throw up, in this extra-ordinary circumstance, will lose its defining essence. What will matter is the fact that Uzodinma has used his head to break the coconut, as they say in the local parlance, in the popular struggle that dismantled the opprobrious third-term dream of Okorocha through his vassal and son-in-law.
Uzodinma should thus benefit from votes from non-partisan voters for providing that leadership when it mattered most. His audacity to stop the perpetuation of an Okorocha political dynasty in Imo State, I believe, should be rewarded with the governorship mandate. There are also feelers that Uzodinma may have committed to a one-term governorship after which either Okigwe or Owerri zone would produce the governor.
The scenario painted above, in terms of garnering the majority of the votes in the election, may not be easy as it seems. Much as Uzodinma will move into the two other zones to discount the support bases of the APGA and the PDP candidates, they will also move into Orlu to do the same. What will count, over all, will be the magnitude of home support that each enjoys and the mutual fidelity to common political causes that the candidates and the people from their respective zone share.
President Buhari meets with select Nigerians in the Diaspora living in Poland on 2nd Dec. 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari has described those who have been going about saying that he is a cloned version of the real Muhammadu Buhari as being wicked, ignorance and irreligious.
President Buhari, who spoke today, Sunday in Krakow, Poland, at an interactive session with the Nigerian Community in the country said that the authors of the confusion about him are “ignorant and irreligious.”
Buhari, who was responding to a question from a Nigerian in the Diaspora who wanted to know if he was real or the much talked about ‘‘Jubril from Sudan” -his supposed double, said: “a lot of people hoped that I died during my ill health.
“Some even reached out to the Vice President to consider them to be his deputy because they assumed I was dead. That embarrassed him a lot and of course, he visited me when I was in London convalescing… It’s real me; I assure you.”
The Nigerian leader said that he was looking forward to celebrating his 76th birthday on December 17 and jocularly added: “if I am getting harassed by anyone, it is my grandchildren, who are getting too many.”
The President used the occasion to reiterate that his government will continue to maintain focus and deliver on the three focal points of his campaign in 2015: security, economy and the fight against corruption.
“Those in the North East will tell you that in spite of the recent setbacks, there is a difference between the time we came and before.
“We are not doing badly on security, economy and agriculture. We have virtually stopped the importation of food especially rice and we are saving a lot of money.
“We now have food security and that has come with fiscal security because a lot of young educated people have not regretted going back to the farms and earning a respectable living.
“I am afraid, this is not receiving good publicity… but a lot of people in the rural areas are enjoying the benefits of our interventions in agriculture.”
President Buhari, who is in Poland to attend the UN Climate Change Conference, COP24 reaffirmed that no territory of Nigeria is under the control of Boko Haram terrorists, calling on Nigerians to remain vigilant and supportive of Federal Government’s efforts to ensure the security of lives and property in the country.
He admitted that it has not been easy financing the security sector in the country, but said that the Nigerian Armed Forces are equal to the task.
The President regretted that herdsmen and farmers clashes in the country have been politicised, even as he assured that his government will continue to prioritise security because that is what many investors consider first before investing in the country.
On the fight against corruption, he said that all recovered stolen assets will be sold and the proceeds returned to the treasury for the benefit of Nigerians.
On women representation in his government, the President told the meeting: ‘‘I have plans for all Nigerians. I am not a male chauvinist. If I’m a chauvinist will I give the Finance Ministry to woman?”
In his remarks, the Ambassador of Nigeria to Poland, Eric Adagogo Bell-Gam praised Nigerians living in the country for being worthy ambassadors of the country.
Among those who met President Buhari were Larry Ugwu, an Artist and Curator, who has lived in Poland for 40 years and has contributed immensely to promoting Nigerian cultural heritage in the Polish society; Anthony Egwuatu, a Gynaecologist, who has lived in the country for 30 years and Olomofe Larry, a human rights activist, who has fought for justice for fellow Nigerians in the host country, among several others.
Very often the first piece of information we have about a person is their name. It’s often the first thing you learn about someone and we form judgments about people very rapidly.
This is the case with the Peoples Democratic Party today; for its name doesn’t make a good first impression around the globe as it symbolizes the worst corruption and maladministration by a political party ever witnessed in any part of the world hence the ill-fated attempt to change the name of the party by its leadership July.
On the 26th of March, 2018, Uche Secondus, the national Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) apologized publicly for the pains and harm they caused Nigerians by their maladministration for sixteen years. Nigerians certainly did not take the apology with a pinch of salt; for they made no attempt at restitution. Is it the apology that would bring back to life millions of our countrymen who died because of the roads that were not repaired despite the appropriation of funds for same? Is it the apology that would comfort families who lost their loved ones as a result of hospitals that were not equipped despite the billions of naira released for same?
It is certainly not the apology that would restore to the national treasury billions of dollars that was looted by a select few who became overnight billionaires at the expense of their compatriots. Companies and industries were grounded as a result of the effect of corruption on the polity.
To underscore the lack of remorse by the PDP, they have chosen former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as their Presidential candidate in the 2019 Presidential elections. This irony is not lost on Nigerians; for Atiku was one of the main actors in the maladministration they inflicted upon this Nation for sixteen years.
We expected that a party that is truly remorseful would start on a clean slate and offer to Nigerians a candidate that represents the future rather than one that reminds us of the sordid past of the party. How do they expect a man who helped to create this big mess to lead the crusade to clear the Augean stable?
Many other organizations were left to die during his reign leading to the saturation of the labour market. This includes Nigeria Airways and NITEL whose workers running into thousands lost their jobs. Their pensions and gratuities were not paid for years leading to death of many of them and the displacement of families as well as the loss of dignity of men and women who suddenly found themselves unable to cater for their families. Their children dropped out of school. Would this generation of Nigerians ever forgive Atiku Abubakar whose personal and business fortunes flourished exceedingly between 1999 and 2007?
During that period, he acquired private jets, established Schools, Adama Beverages Ltd and several other companies. Even with the admission of guilt by the PDP as epitomized by their apology, it is very alarming that the PDP expects Nigerians and the APC to gloss over their records in office which is certainly the major reason for the stunted growth of the Nation. They forget that an Atiku candidacy further opens the festering sore of bad governance that has refused to heal. Not even the much-advertised apology to Nigerians by the party has brought it redemption.
They cannot run from their shadow, no matter how much they try. It is obvious that the same fate that dealt a cruel blow to their attempt to effect a name change has conspired again to foist an Atiku candidacy on the PDP. This makes it impossible for them to run away from its sordid past. The most common slogan in Nigeria before May, 2015 was “PDP- Share the Money.” And the money was really shared, but just amongst a small few who held the Nation by the jugular. Dr. Ngozi OkonjoIweala, Minister of Finance in the PDP Governments of Obasanjo/Atiku and Goodluck Jonathan between 2003 and 2015 has been telling the world the story of the grand corruption that took place during the reign of the PDP in her book ‘Fighting Corruption is Dangerous: The Story Behind the Headlines.’
I wish the PDP well as it strenuously tries to clothe itself and its Presidential candidate in borrowed robes, but we cannot be fooled. Dr. OkonjoIweala who certainly knows better as Minister of Finance during the reign of the PDP has said it all.
It also speaks volumes that instead of clearing his name, Atiku took some clerics to Ota to beg Obasanjo, his perennial accuser for mercy.
Nigeria has been reborn! The APC Government is making Nigeria work for all Nigerians, not for a few who turn around to oppress their fellow citizens with the ill-gotten wealth stolen from the common wealth.
Atiku only got Nigeria to work for himself and a few of his cronies between 1999 and 2007 but President Buhari has got Nigeria working for all Nigerians since May 29, 2015!

PDP Presents Atiku, Reminding Nigerians Of The Sordid Past, By Nduka Enweliku
