Our Government Does Not Regret Concentrating Attention On Poor Nigerians – Osinbajo

Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has made it clear that the government which he and President Muhammadu Buhari run does not regret the fact that it concentrates more on the welfare and well being of the poor Nigerians than any other category of the citizenry.

He insisted that the sole concern of the government is that the resources of Nigeria must be used for the man and woman who need it the most, which explains the focus of the administration’s entire economic policy on the poor.

Professor Osinbajo, who spoke today, Tuesday, while monitoring the ongoing disbursement on the N10,000 collateral and interest-free loans under the Trader Moni Scheme in Dutse, Jigawa State, stressed that the government had, in the past few years, tried to give hope to the common Nigerian through the various schemes for women, men and youths, regardless of their backgrounds.

“Mr. President’s sole concern is that the resources of our country must be used for the man and woman who need it the most; the people in our society who are working hard; the farmers, the traders, and all of the young people who need jobs. That is the focus of Mr. President’s entire economic policy. It is on giving the common man hope so that they can live decent lives; they can provide shelter for themselves, feed and live well.”

The Vice President looked back at the past Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government which he said, embarked on “mindless stealing of resources,” saying: “if the money of our people was not stolen, there would be enough for us to do what we want to do. The money that we make as a country must not be stolen by a few people.”

He said that despite the challenges associated with the fall in oil prices, President Buhari is still committed to giving hope to the poorest Nigerians hence, the implementation of the various components of the Social Investment Programmes.

“Under the Trader Moni Scheme, we are giving 2million people across Nigeria, N10,000 collateral-free loans with the possibility of increasing the amount within six months.

“Here in Jigawa, we have given 30,000 petty traders and only today, we gave extra 2,000 to 5,000 traders, and all together, we have given about 35,000 people the loans in Jigawa alone.

“We also have the Market Moni scheme which is another initiative for traders that are bigger than the petty traders and we start from N50,000 to N350,000.”

The Vice President said that Jigawa State has the highest number of beneficiaries nationwide in the area of Conditional Cash Transfer scheme.

“This is the state where we have given the largest number of people; we have given 37,000 beneficiaries in this state, and every month these people receive the transfers.”

The Conditional Cash Transfer is a N5,000 monthly provision for the poorest and most vulnerable Nigerians.

Ohanaeze Youth Council Queries Atiku’s 6 Year Master Plan

Ohanaeze Youth Council has raised eyebrow over a six year master plan recently presented by the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic party (PDP), which threw doubt on his earlier one-tenure pledge.

In a statement today, Tuesday by its Secretary General, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, the youth said that Atiku’s six years master plan is suspicious as it seems like a ploy by the PDP candidate to go for a second tenure.

It argued that the Presidency is supposed to be given to the south east in 2023 adding that MR Atiku may not get South East’s votes if he does not make a pledge to go for only one tenure.

“OYC had studied diligently, the Six Year plan of Atiku Abubakar policy to make Nigeria work again as a good document but insists that Atiku must make a categorical Statement that he will only seek for one tenure to convince Ndigbo that his Six Year Policy Statement is not intention of seeking second term against 2023 Igbo Presidency Project.”

The group called on the people of south east geopolitical zone to put their house in order before next year’s general election to avoid what happened in 2003 election in south west where the opposition governors under the Alliance for Democracy, agreed to Vote for Obasanjo and later lost their Seats.

Ajimobi, while speaking said the meeting was convened in reaction to an observation of a noticeable increase in the activities of criminals in neighbouring states and attacks on banks.
The governor, who spoke through his deputy, Otunba Moses Alake Adeyemi, said, “It is common knowledge that before the inception of this present administration, insecurity in form of armed robberies, arson and other violent crimes as well as lawlessness from the nefarious activities of area boys had been the order of the day.
“The prevailing peaceful atmosphere in the state has been the result of the zero tolerance for crime by this administration and also through the commitment of the state government to combating crime through steps such as the establishment of Oyo State Joint Security Patrol Squad code named “Operation Burst” as well as the setting up of the Oyo State Security Trust Fund,” Ajimobi stated. I can confirm that the installation of closed circuit television (CCTV) in black spots and business districts in the city to monitor the activities of criminals has been completed and is now operational.
Chairman of the state Security Trust Fund, Mr. Bayo Adelabu, whose address was read by the Executive Secretary of the trust fund, Mr. Femi Oyedipe, noted that the spate of recent armed robberies on banks and the killing of security personnel in neighbouring states have made it necessary to hold the emergency meeting.

The Director, Defence Information, Brigadier-General John Agim, has warned media against joking with the security challenges facing Nigeria with the kind of news they put before members of the reading public.
Reacting to the trending news that soldiers killed by Boko Haram at Malete in Borno State did not have modern weapons and that they were betrayed by their commanders, General Agim said: “we should avoid joking with our security problems. If we do not change the narrative and encourage our troops to face our security challenges with boldness, then we should be ready for the worst.
“The Matele incident also killed the commander, so what corruption are we talking about? The commanders’ lives are in danger like any other soldier deployed in the Operation Theatre.”

Group Accuses Atiku, PDP Of Mocking Soldiers Killed In Borno By Boko Haram

A group, Buhari Media Organisation (BMO), has accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar of mockin the soldiers that were killed by Boko Haram insurgents recently at Metele in Borno State as well as playing politics with the situation.
In a statement by its Chairman Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary Cassidy Madueke, the group said that since the unfortunate attack on Metele village in the North east a few days ago, the opposition party and its candidate have been using every opportunity to celebrate the situation.
“We are at a loss as to why opposition elements have been milking the tragic deaths of national heroes so much so that the international media took notice with different castigating headlines which should have made these people retrace their steps.
“In a bid to discredit the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, PDP posted gory pictures of dead soldiers from elsewhere and few days later, Atiku offered scholarships to the children of slain soldiers.
“The former Vice President’s move came at a time the military authorities had not even completed the standard practice of identifying soldiers killed in action or even notifying their next of kin.”
The group said that the inhumane act amounted to dancing on the graves of those who paid the supreme sacrifice to ensure that the PDP Presidential candidate could conveniently invite his friends to celebrate his American University of Nigeria Founder’s Day last weekend.
“He and his media handlers have forgotten how in 2014, he lamented at a press conference that a handful of Boko Haram fighters had successfully invaded and hoisted the caliphate flag in Mubi, a town with a population of about 300,000 as well as Michika and Gulak after they had over-ran Bama a town nearly 400 kilometres from Yola.
“This gave rise to thousands of displaced persons in Adamawa, and not once did the former Vice President announce relief support for IDPs or scholarships for children of soldiers that died liberating his state.
“The height of Atiku and his party’s insensitivity is the fact that they are still busy issuing statements critical of the military leadership twenty four hours after Air Force jets crossed into a neighbouring country to launch airstrikes on the base of the terrorists who carried out the Metele attack, based on actionable intelligence.
“They didn’t even acknowledge that over 200 foreign terrorists were killed and some of their armoured vehicles destroyed in the air raids”.
The group said that Nigerians would not forget in a hurry how PDP allowed the insurgency to fester for years during which no fewer than 16 local government areas in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states were fully controlled by the insurgents.
“We make bold to say that if the $2billion set aside for arms purchase in 2015 were not shared to PDP members through the office of the National Security Adviser, no one would be talking about the capacity of Boko Haram or ISWAP in 2018.”

General Garba Blames Information Leakage On Recent Killing Of Soldiers By Boko Haram

Former Chief of Army Administration, retired Major-General Garba Wahab, has blamed the recent attack on a military base in Metele, a remote village near the border with the Niger Republic, on information leakage.
Wahab, who was a guest on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, advised the military to be careful in its intelligence gathering approach, in the war against terror.
“The military needs to look at information that leads to intelligence. You cannot afford to allow your information to leak. A lot of information is leaking, it is your information you turn into intelligence.”
His comments came on the heels of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a Boko Haram splinter group, killing of at least, 44 soldiers in attacks on three military bases in Borno State.
The retired Army chief admitted that the military cannot completely eradicate terror, even as he advised the Federal Government to boost the morale of the troops fighting Boko Haram terrorists in the northeast.
“We need to reassess. Is the equipment okay? Are the troops motivated? If the will to fight is not there, it behoves disaster because you must continuously motivate them.
“Whether you like it or not, a lot of issues are involved. And it is not only military because there is no military solution to this. You need to also look at the political issue, the economic and sociological perspectives.”

Ekiti Workers Narrate How Ex Gov Fayose Allegedly Dolled Out N264 Million To Labour Leaders In The State

Workers in Ekiti State have narrated, in a petition to the State House of Assembly on how the immediate past Governor of the State,Ayo Fayose was dolling out the sum of six million naira monthly to labour leaders for nearly four years and that as at the time he left office, the amount had risen to N264 million.
Acting under the aegis of Ekiti Workers Rescue Team (EWRT), the asked the Assembly panel to summon the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Chairman, Mr. Ade Adesanmi and his Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart, Mr. Odunayo Adesoye, to explain how they spent the cash from 2015.
In the petition dated 23 November 2018, a copy of which was made available to our reporter today, Tuesday, the EWRT claimed that N6 million
given to the labour leaders monthly did not reflect in the union’s bank accounts.
The EWRT regretted that, “the wicked conspiracy and unholy alliance” between Fayose and the labour leaders accounted for why they could not fight for workers’ rights during the last administration.
The group told the Assembly panel that this constituted a moral burden to the labour leaders, who instead of agitating for payment of arrears of salaries and allowances under Fayose, consistently commended him when workers were dying.
The petition which was addressed to the House Committee Chairman on Public Accounts, Hon. Gboyega Aribisogan was signed by EWRT Chairman, Mr. Ojo Ayodeji and Secretary, Mr. W.A. Ajayi.
Attached to the petition was the Auditor General’s Report for the year ended, 31 December 2017 which showed that the TUC received N1 million monthly and the NLC got N5 million monthly under Fayose as “running grants.”
The Auditor General in the report recommended that, “trade unions irrespective of their closeness to government should not be treated as government offices.
“The unions are umbrella bodies for workers whose responsibilities are to see to the welfare of their members. Also, members pay dues for the running of their respective bodies. It is tolerable if such bodies enjoy occasional assistance when the need arises.”
The petition read in part: “The huge sum had been released on monthly basis to these comrades without a corresponding deposit in the unions’ bank accounts.
“The release was meant for just one purpose-to pay them back for supporting and cooperating with the government of Ayo Fayose to impoverish the workers of Ekiti State.
“One would have scored the government that approved the release of this magnitude of public funds to industrial unions high and termed her as workers friendly if the purpose is for the betterment of the entire workforce.
“But in contrary, it was meant for sharing into individual pockets of about six people. There was no single record of physical projects embarked upon by these labour merchants for the period of about four years.
“We are protesting and reporting officially to this highly esteemed committee to wade in by investigating and ensuring justice while the perpetrators refund the money to the last penny back to the coffers of Ekiti State for the betterment of the public in general and its workforce in particular.”
Reacting, Adesanmi who said he has not received a copy of the petition, denied collecting any largesse from the Fayose administration.
Adesanmi said that unionism is not under the jurisdiction of the House of Assembly, arguing that any complaints against labour leaders are taken to the national secretariats of their unions.
“They (EWRT) are just chasing shadows, they are a group of former labour leaders who served out their terms and nobody chased
them out of office.
“They had raised several allegations including the claim that I received N15 million for my father’s burial. All that they are saying now is not true, not at all, not at all.
“You can do your own findings from the Office of Establishment under which supervises labour matters.”

Falana Thumbs Up For Executive Order 5, Wants It Handled By Professionals

Femi Falana (SAN)

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has commended the spirit and content of President Muhammadu Buhari’s Executive Order Five, which is aimed at enhancing rapid technological development of Nigeria.

Falana, who spoke today, Monday, at the on-going Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria’s (CORBON) congress in Abuja with the theme: “Standardization and Innovative Technologies for Sustainable Development in Nigeria’s Construction Industry,” however wanted the implementation of the Order to be carried out by professionals for quick results.

President Muhammadu Buhari had, in February, approved Executive order Five which mandates Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to give preference to local engineering companies in the award of contracts in the country.

The order is to grant priority to local companies on projects to the tune of 7.5 per cent, except in the absence of local engineers that could not execute the projects before international expertise could be deployed.

Falana explained that Executive order Five is part of efforts by the Federal Government to promote Science Technology Acquisition and innovation in the country and the sector is the base for development.

“Approving the order will boost the country’s economy and help the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals.

“Executive order 5 allows for monopoly in procurement processes among MDAs and if the order must work, we need an office in the presidency to evaluate and monitor its implementation.

“Nigerian registered companies are authorised to supervise contracts and projects in the country and there must be a decisive political action on the part of the government to make the executive order work.”

Falana said that professionals in the industry should pressurize state governments to adopt the executive order for the benefit of all citizens, adding that the Federal Government is not taking the right steps in the right direction for the implementation of the order but professionals in the sector can facilitate it.

Falana said that the country needed to properly harness its abundant human and natural resources to avoid relegating contracts and resources due to citizens to foreign expertise.

He added that harnessing human resources in the country, especially in the building industry required training and re-training of engineers to meet with the trends in the sector.

“Building professionals have not taken steps to check quackery and you find people running the industry being foreigners that are not registered under the law.

“In some situations, preference is given to unqualified foreign builders at the expense of our qualified local engineers. It is time registered builders take control of the building industry.”

The lawyer said however that the executive order cannot be a substitute to any act of the council or other professionals in the industry even as he pledged to assist the council and other professional bodies in the industry to pursue their acts enforcement.

Falana called on the council to ensure buildings in the country met with international standards as well as accommodate the plight of persons living with disabilities.

The Minister of State for Works, Land and Housing, Suleiman Zarma, said that the Federal Government is strategizing to liaise with the private sector to ensure best practices in the building industry.

“With the high demand of affordable houses by Nigerians and the need to curb the incessant collapse of buildings in the country, there is need to engage the private sector”, Zarma said.

Chairman of CORBON, Professor Kabir Bala, said that the congress would provide the platform for players in the industry to network and interface with investors for professionalism.

Bala said that they were collaborating with the Office of the Vice President through its National Social Investment Programme to train artisans in the country.

According to him, the training will position the beneficiaries for meaningful jobs and they will be certified by the council.
