UPP Chairman, Okorie Says Ohanaeze Did Not Endorse Atiku; Adopts Buhari For 2019 Poll

National Chairman, United Progressive Party (UPP), Chief Chekwas Okorie,

National Chairman, United Progressive Party (UPP), Chief Chekwas Okorie, has made it clear that the Ohanaeze he knew in which he is a member for 42 years could not have endorsed the candidacy of the Presidential flag bearer of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar because the body is non partisan.

He said also that his party, UPP, has adopted President Muhammadu Buhari as its candidate in the 2019 presidential election.

Okorie, who spoke to news men today, Friday after a South-East group he led had a closed door meeting with President Buhari in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, insisted that Ohanaeze as a non-partisan pan-Igbo organization could not have endorsed Atiku.

“I joined Ohanaeze in 1976 as an undergraduate. Ohanaeze is 42 years and I am 42 years old in the organization. The original members that founded Ohanaeze are only four that are living today, including myself.

“All others, including those who lead Ohanaeze now, came after that formation and I have been a member of the elders council; there was no where we met and agreed on the event that took place yesterday (to endorse Atiku).”

The UPP national chairman said that Ohanaeze had issued a statement to say it did not, as a body, endorse Alhaji Atiku Abukakar.

On the visit of the group, which comprised Chief Azuka Okwuosa, an APC Chieftain from Anambra South Senatorial Zone, Dr. Ugochukwu Okafor, National Publicity Secretary, Igboezue Cultural Organization and Sadiq Masara, National Secretary, UPP to the President, Okorie said: “we came to pay the president not just a solidarity visit but intimate him on how we intend to get fully involved in his re-election bid.

“It will be recalled that UPP in August this year, took a decision by its National Executive Committee (NEC) that we will not present a candidate for the 2019 presidential election and we therefore resolved after due consultations and consideration of every factor to adopt President Buhari as UPP Presidential Candidate for the 2019 presidential election.

“This, we shall formally unfold on Tuesday when our NEC will meet and address a world press conference to that effect.

“In doing that, we are going to deploy all our ward, local governments and state/national structures to be actively involved in the campaign to make a pronouncement and go to sleep and wait for result to make itself.

“We will be part of that result; Igboezue Cultural Association is coordinating all the extant Igbo groups across the country for this same purpose.”

Okorie said that a situation where Igbo people had put their eggs in one basket for 16 years was not healthy as the people were almost out of the political radar.

He said that the out of Buhari’s benevolence, certain infrastructural activities are ongoing and are being funded without having to change the contractors.

According to him, this is the time to make Buhari’s re-election bid something of a national consensus so that every section will have a claim.

Okorie said that he and other stakeholders are working towards changing the narrative so that Igbo people would be more involved instead of being out of government.

PDP Has No Conscience, Must Not Be Allowed To Rule Nigeria Again, Buhari Advises

President Buhari receives in audience select Leaders from South East in State House on 16th Nov 2018

President Muhammadu Buhari is obviously angry with the leadership of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the government they operated for 16 years, saying that for them to be struggling to return to power in 2019 shows that they lack conscience.

The President, who spoke to a select group of Southeast leaders at a meeting in the Presidential Villa, Abuja today, made it clear that he would not be tired of speaking about the golden opportunity Nigeria lost during 16 years of the PDP.

“We earned money, which we didn’t use. The state of infrastructure we inherited was terrible – no roads, the railway was killed and power.  They lacked conscience because anybody with conscience will not do what they did.  We will report them to Nigerians.  Let anybody lead this country but not the PDP.  They were so reckless with the resources of the country.

“If you ruin the economy, send your children abroad to get education, won’t they come back? I said it 30 years ago that this is the only country we have.  We must stay here and salvage it together.”

He referred to the endorsement of the PDP Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar, by Ohanaeze Ndigbo, saying that the split that later emerged within the Igbo socio-cultural group did not surprise him.

President Buhari said that the moment the so-called resolution was announced, he got calls from well-meaning leaders from the region asking him to disregard it as it was without any substance.

“From that moment, I knew that the resolution would not stand, and alas, there it was.”

The President stressed that his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), got it right from the very beginning that the major problems facing the country were mainly on security, corruption and the economy.

“We have done so much. Given the chance, we will do more.  Given every chance, we will tell Nigerians where we were in 2015 and what we have achieved up to now.

The leaders of the delegation, Engineer Emeka Ekwuosa and the National Chairman of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Chief Chekwas Okorie, informed President Buhari that the Igbos and South-easterners generally understand the good things he is doing for Nigeria which they said, had unfortunately been misunderstood.

They promised to mobilize support for him in the south-east, saying that his re-election will be a national consensus.

Bank Of Agriculture Will Soon Be Handed To Farmers As Owners – Agric Minister

Minister of agriculture, Audu Ogbe, has announced that the Bank of Agriculture is being restructured in a way that it will be owned eventually by farmers in Nigeria.

“The BPE (Bureau of Public Enterprises) is about to restructure the bank of agriculture after which farmers are going to be able to buy shares in the bank; so eventually it will become the farmers bank.”

Audu Ogbe, who spoke to news men today at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, hoped that in the process, such move will bring down interest rates reasonably “maybe five percent or a little higher, so that agriculture will become attractive and people can raise capital to invest.”

He advocated the ban of fertilizer NPK 151515 which, he said, has been used in the country for many years.

“Recent research revealed that it is not useful for any crop or any soil. Soils differ and so does crop. To believe there is one uniform fertilizer you can spread for every crop is a fallacy.

“And it’s because we have done soil test and change the formulations of fertilizers, local blenders that some of the yields we are getting now are rising from two tons per hectare to five and six. So the President is looking into that, and will see how we can deal with it.”

Speaking on the effect of herdsmen/farmers clashes on food production, the minister said that the government is putting in place a programme that will aggregate all the wastes from harvest, including maize stock,  rice stock, sorghum, Millets, beans for the purpose of processing them to feed the cows instead of letting them roam around and getting to this conflict with the farmers.

“We also announced a decline in foreign exchange expenditure on food items in the last five years. The items are sugar, milk, Rice, tomato and wheat. In 2013, we spent $1,424,968.1 importing these five good items but the figure dropped to $1.280 billion in 2014.

“These are figures from the CBN as early as Monday this week.

“In 2015, the figure dropped further to $971 million and to $780.792 million and in 2017 the figure is now $628,643 million. The figure for the 2018 will be ready next year. You can see the decline in our importation of food.”

Insecurity: Buhari Challenges Religious Leaders, Others To Be Part Of Solution

President Buhari receives in audience Leadership of Christian faith in State House on 16th Nov 2018

President Muhammadu Buhari has enlisted the support of religious leaders and other stakeholders in the Nigerian project to wake up to the responsibility of providing relevant information for the arrest of miscreants in the society.

President Buhari, who played host to the President and members of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), at the Presidential Villa, Abuja today, Friday, said that all those who constitute security risk and threatening the peace of various communities live among the people.

He appealed to leaders of thought in various communities, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, opinion leaders, to avail security agencies of information about the criminals.

He said that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has already given him an assurance that the 2019 elections will be free and fair, adding that as a  victim of  fraudulent elections and  beneficiary of  free and fair election in the past, he would stop at nothing to ensure that 2019 election is free, fair and just.

“When I decided to put on this Agbada to see what the people are seeing in it, I tried three times, 2003, 2007 and 2011, but the fourth time, in 2015, I succeeded. We thank God and  technology in the form of permanent voters card and card reader, because what they used to do was to look at constituencies, award the votes and then they will say whoever didn’t agree should go to court. When people are looking for what to eat, where do they have the money to go to court to pay the SANs?”

On farmers and herders clashes, President Buhari said that government is working towards finding a lasting solution to it.

On the issue of fighting corruption, the President said that it takes longer time before the effect is felt, especially with the need to adhere to the rule of law.

“It is on record that some cases initiated by the anti-graft bodies since 2003 are yet to be concluded. We will, however, not be discouraged. Where monies have been recovered, such monies will not find their way back to the looters as I have directed EFCC to account for every money it has recovered and put them in a dedicated account,” President Buhari said.

The CAN delegation had lauded the President for his efforts in fighting corruption, the initiatives to stem the tide of unemployment, the various efforts aimed at revamping the economy, the fight against Boko Haram terrorists and the implementation of the Bank Verification Number and the  Treasury Single Account.

They, however, called on the President to ensure that the security agencies are non-partisan as we head to 2019 elections; restore peace to troubled spots in Northern parts of the country especially in the Garshish District of Plateau State, and institute a judicial panel  of enquiry to look into the killings in the North Central particularly the murder of Major General  Idris Alkali (rtd) and the Royal Highness of the Adara Kingdom in Kaduna, Dr. Maiwada Raphael Galadima.

They also called on the President to; ensure that Nigeria does not go back into recession; urgently resolve the issue of minimum wage and to task the security agencies to ensure the release of Miss Leah Sharibu and other Chibok girls still in captivity.

The CAN visitors to President Buhari were led by its President, Reverend (Dr.) Samson Ayokunle.

Nigeria, China Top World’s Largest Rice Importers, US Agric Department Reports

The United States of America’s Department of Agriculture (USDA) has reported that Nigeria and China are now the world leaders as rice importers.

The Department said that Nigeria, with a projected 13 percent jump in 2019 to 3.4 million metric tons, will emerge second largest importer of rice after China next year.

“China and Nigeria are projected to remain the largest rice importing countries in 2019, followed by the EU, Cote d’Ivoire, and Iran.”

In its latest Rice Outlook, the USDA said: “Nigeria and Egypt are projected to account for the bulk of the 2019 import increase.”

There are reports that production had increased more than 50 per cent since 2012 to 3.7 million tons last year. Domestic demand rose 4 per cent to 6.7 million tons in the 2017-18 year that ended in May.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh, had earlier warned that Nigeria may face shortages in the supply of rice due to the flood that ravaged the country recently.

Current global production exceeds consumption by 2.3 million tons, according to USDA, with 2018-19 “global ending stocks” projected to reach 163 million tons, 17.8 million tons more than previously forecast.
