Four players of Nigerian descent have been named to the prestigious Guardian Uk’s Next Generation 2018: 20 of the best talents at Premier League clubs.
Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, Chelsea’s Faustino Anjorin, Huddersfield Town’s Mustapha Olagunju and West Ham’s Daniel Jinadu have been included on the list of top 20 footballers born between 1 September 2001 and 31 August 2002, otherwise known as first-year scholars.
Of the aforementioned players, only defender Olagunju, who agreed a scholarship deal with the Terriers in April 2018, has not represented England’s youth teams.
On Saka, the newspaper wrote, ”Saka is a left winger who can also play at left-back, who trades on his power, directness, ability to beat his man and final ball. The London-born England under-17 international has a physical solidity that belies his years. With Reiss Nelson on loan at Hoffenheim for the season, he senses sustained opportunity at under-23 level. ”
”Anjorin has been with Chelsea since the age of six, a powerful, box-to-box midfielder who scored eight goals in 24 games for the youth team last season including the last in the 4-0 Youth Cup final second-leg rout of Arsenal at the Emirates,” London football correspondent Dominic Fifield said on Anjorin.
”His athletic qualities are obvious – he is 6ft 2in, strong and fast – but his attitude, understanding of the game and his deftness on the ball are the traits that coaches find especially encouraging. He is eligible to play for both England and Nigeria,” Paul Doyle said on Mustapha Olagunju.
”Jinadu, who is of Nigerian descent, has represented England at youth level and Manuel Pellegrini included him in the first team’s pre-season training camp. It was a big vote of confidence in the youngster’s ability from West Ham’s manager, who will expect him to progress at youth level this season,” Jacob Steinberg praised Jinadu.
Liverpool’s Dominic Solanke, Man City’s Tosin Adarabioyo, Sunderland’s Josh Maja and Crystal Palace’s Joseph Hungbo were named among the best prospects at Premier League clubs in the past.
Nigeria will put her strongest foot forward right from kick off against Libya’s Mediterranean Knights in Saturday evening’s
Coach Gernot Rohr of the Super Eagles has underscored the No-Option-To-Victory stance in the Saturday, October 13 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier with Libya’s Mediterranean Knights at the Akwa Ibom Stadium in Uyo.
The chief coach, today, Thursday, instructed his charges to dig deep into their reserves and replicate what they did against African champions Cameroon in a similar situation 11 months ago.
Rohr called on stand –in skipper Ahmed Musa and the rest of the squad to earn a credible result on Saturday and go ahead to dig their feet into the ground in the return in Sfax on Tuesday.
“I believe we have the players here to earn a decent result and then go and give their all in Libya for another credible outcome. We need the points now; we cannot pretend about that. If we pick the points in these two games, we will be very close to the AFCON ticket.
“It was good winning in Seychelles the way we did. We got the result we needed and it should serve as a good motivation to continue winning when we play Libya.”
President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Melvin Pinnick, who is the President of the CAF Organizing Committee for AFCON, also called on the three –time African champions to give joy to the country’s teeming football lovers by pocketing all the three points on Saturday.
“It is important that we win in Uyo on Saturday in order to fly with the same momentum to Tunisia for the return leg. Victory in Seychelles last month has restored our campaign and we must capitalize on the good feeling to get close to a ticket. Victory in the two matches will not only take us closer to 2019 AFCON ticket, it will provide us with the verve we need to go and win in South Africa in November.”
South Africa defeated Nigeria 2-0 in Uyo on the opening day of the qualifying series in June 2017, and it is a result that still rankles with the average Nigerian football fan.
Group leaders Libya have now opted to fly into Nigeria on Friday, as against Thursday that was earlier announced. The delegation will arrive the Ibom International Airport, Uyo aboard a chartered aircraft on Friday morning.
Referee Jean-Jacques Ndala Ngambo, alongside compatriots Olivier Safari Kabene (Assistant Referee 1), Nabina Blaise Sebutu (Assistant Referee 2) and Malala Kabanga Yannick (Reserve Referee) – all from the Democratic Republc of Congo – have arrived in Lagos. They will fly into Uyo on Friday morning.
The match commissioner, Mr. Andy Quame from Liberia, as well as South African Dan Van Vuuren (security officer) and Malian Koman Coulibaly (referee assessor) will also arrive in Uyo on Friday.
Spokesman of the re-election campaign organization of President Muhammadu Buhari, Barrister Festus Keyamo has wondered why the former Nigerian Vice President, Atiku Abubakar had continued to beg his former boss, ex President Olusengun Obasanjo for forgiveness instead of presenting evidence that he is not guilty of the allegations of corruption Obasanjo leveled against him.
“However, we are bemused and amused that a character who intends to be President of Nigeria has, for the past eleven years, consistently begged for “forgiveness” from a man who has consistently and unequivocally called him a very corrupt fellow.
“We wonder what type of character would not vigorously confront his accuser with facts to show his innocence, but would rather consistently ask for “forgiveness” from him.
“The desperation to get the endorsement of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo by the PDP and its candidate is a clear sign that they want to return us to our sordid past where a few people decide who should govern us.”
In a statement today, Thursday reacting to Obasanjo’s endorsement of Atiku for the 2019 Presidential election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Pary (PDP), Keyamo recalled that in 2014/2015, President Buhari and his team, out of respect and convention, paid courtesy calls on prominent individuals and statesmen in the course of their campaigns when they visited cities in which these individuals lived.
“However, Nigerians should note that President Buhari was NEVER reported to have groveled and “begged” ANYONE for forgiveness, just to be endorsed as a Presidential candidate. Ultimately, he relied on the people of Nigeria to decide his fate. President Buhari would continue to rely on the endorsement of the people of Nigeria to be re-elected.”
He asked asked Nigerians not to join ex-President Obasanjo in receiving the curse he personally invoked on himself over Atiku.
He recalled that while denying the claim of Wole Soyinka that he knelt down for Atiku in a desperate bid to secure the PDP ticket for the 2003 poll, Obasanjo had said: “How can I be on the same side with Atiku? To do what? If I support Atiku for anything, God will not forgive me. If I do not know, yes. But once I know, Atiku can never enjoy my support.”
Keyamo added: “interestingly, just a few weeks ago, specifically on the 4th of August, 2018, Chief Obasanjo was widely reported to have said ‘God will NEVER forgive me if I support Atiku for President.’
“Whilst we acknowledge the constitutional right of the ex-president to support anyone of his choice, we draw attention of all God-fearing Nigerians to a character who would use the name of God in vain and in a flip-flop manner in just a matter of weeks. Where is the shame? Where is the honour? Where is the pride?
“When a person invokes the curse of God upon himself if he does a particular thing, like Obasanjo has done, and then deliberately does that particularly thing and calls on Nigerians to follow him to receive his curse, Nigerians must flee in the opposite direction. We urge Nigerians NOT to follow this character to receive the curse he invoked upon himself.”
The Nigerian Presidency has described the endorsement of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 Presidential election, Atiku Abubakar by his former boss, ex President Olusegun Obasanjo as the well-rehearsed theatre.
In a statement today, Thursday by the senior special assistant to the President on media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, the presidency said that Obasanjo’s endorsement of Atiku was predictable and a somersault that did not surprise anybody, swearing: “they will lose together. Listening to the prepared statement of the former President after the meeting showed the usual ego trip and “I know it all” character of Chief Obasanjo.
“In the first place, we dare to say that a pompous statement from the former President advising Nigerians on a vote against President Buhari is the best recommendation that can come at this time.
“It also betrayed a lack of understanding of today’s politics which is about good governance. The country voted for change in 2015 and a leader that ensures good governance which only President Buhari and the APC can provide.
“Bent on these laudable goals, we will not allow ourselves to be distracted.”
The Presidency said that it is now busy on various national issues, including the restructuring and the diversification of the economy, fighting corruption, terrorism and other threats to national security; increasing the availability of electric power, improving education, health, and providing long-delayed infrastructure – roads, rail, airports and so forth.
“Many governments have come and gone, but they did not care about some of these projects. We were talking about these things for sixteen years under the PDP and nothing was done.
“President Buhari is proud of his record because his achievements are verifiable, while that of the PDP is manifested by the devastating social and economic impact of large scale corruption during their governance.
“The President will not relent in the war against corruption because the ordinary people are the ultimate victims if we surrender to corruption and let its perpetrators go unpunished.
“Abandoning the war against corruption is not an option. President Buhari is in this battle against graft because he cannot allow a few, rapacious, and selfish class of the elite to divert the resources meant for the well-being of the ordinary people to their private pockets.
“Nigerians trust President Buhari in this effort because they are convinced he is not in government for personal financial benefits, or for an ego trip. It is just eleven years ago that the former President and Vice President in their ugly fight for power accused each other of corruption. Nigerians are yet to forget all that.”
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has assured his former deputy, Atiku Abubakar that he has forgiven him for all the wrongs he committed against him as a person, and hoped that Nigerians will also forgive him by voting for him as President on the platform of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019 elections.
“Whenever or wherever you might have offended me, as a Christian who asks for God’s forgiveness of my sins and inadequacies on daily basis, I forgive and I sincerely advise you to learn from the past and do what is right and it will be well with you.
“With Nigerians voting for you, it will mean that you secure their forgiveness and regain their confidence. It will be with the hope or assurance of a Paul on the road to Damascus Conversion.”
Obasanjo, who played host to Atiku today, Thursday in his Abeokuta, Ogun State home, along with some party and religious personalities, reminded his former arch enemy that there are still areas, nationally and internationally, where he has to mend fences and make amends.
“From what transpired in the last couple of hours or so, you have shown remorse; you have asked for forgiveness and you have indicated that you have learnt some good lessons and you will mend fences and make amends as necessary and as desirable.
“Obviously, you have mended fences with the Party and fully reconciled with the Party. That’s why today, you are the Presidential Candidate of the Party. In addition to appreciating all that the Party has done for you, may I advise you to work together with all those who contested for the Party’s flag with you as a team for your campaign.
Obasanjo is sure that Atiku knew how to handle what is already out and what may yet be put out by the opposition, saying: “but, I am convinced that if you continue with the attitude that brought you here with these distinguished leaders of goodwill, with remorse and contrite heart, the rest of the coast within and outside the country can be cleared. And if there is anything I can do and you want me to do in that respect, I will do.”
The former President, who congratulated Atiku whom he described as President-to-be, said that he had reviewed what went wrong on the side of Atiku and that in all honesty, “my former Vice-President has re-discovered and re-positioned himself. As I have repeatedly said, it is not so much what you did against me that was the issue but what you did against the Party, the Government and the country.
“I took the stand I had taken based on the character and attributes you exhibited in the position you found yourself. I strongly believe that I was right. It was in the overall interest of everyone and everything to take such a position.”
Obasanjo is sure that with the right attitude for change where necessary, and by putting lessons learned, Atiku will get the understanding, cooperation, support and mandate – all at the national level.
According to Obasanjo: “after all, change and conversion are of man, adding that he believed that with a contrite heart, change is possible in everybody’s life and situation.
“For me, relatively and of all the aspirants in the PDP, you have the widest and greatest exposure, experience, outreach and possibly the best machinery and preparation for seeing the tough and likely dirty campaign ahead through. From what I personally know of you, you have capacity to perform better than the incumbent. You surely understand the economy better; you have business experience, which can make your administration business-friendly and boost the economy and provide jobs.
“You have better outreach nationally and internationally and that can translate to better management of foreign affairs. You are more accessible and less inflexible and more open to all parts of the country in many ways. As Pastor Bakare, one-time running mate of the incumbent President said, “You are a wazobia man.” And that should help you in confronting the confrontable and shunning nepotism.
“As you know, along the road to where you are today, many leaders and ordinary people cooperated and overtly and covertly worked hard. On your behalf, I thank them all. May their coast continue to be expanded.
“And when you become Nigerian President which, insha-Allah, you will be, remember what we did together in government – we ran an administration by Nigerians for all Nigerians where merit and performance count more than blood relationship, friendship or kith and kin. Although some time and ground have been lost, you should endeavour to start from where we stopped and recover some lost ground, if not time.
“Please uphold truth, integrity, principles, morality and fight corruption, crimes and insurgency. The fundamental law of the land, our constitution must be scrupulously defended. I make one demand and one demand on you today, I need you to say before God and man that you will always remain irrevocably committed to upholding ALL the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the whole country will remain your single indivisible constituency.
“Constitutionalism, popular participation and inclusiveness are pre-conditions for reversing the deficits of the past three and half years. They will ensure abiding faith in our indivisibility, oneness and faith in the survival of all against none.
“The fundamentals for our development, economic growth and progress are hard and soft infrastructure. Remember to always give adequate places in your administration to our youth and women.
“All the authorities involved with the preparation, all processes and conduct of the election must ensure that the election is free, fair and credible.”
The President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Funke Egbemode has cautioned Journalists in the country not to engage in shoddy deals with politicians.
Funke, who spoke today, Thursday, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline of the 14th All Nigeria Editors Conference in Asaba, Delta State, said that the Guild condemned in entirety, corruption in the journalism profession.
She is of the view that corrupt journalists would not go far in the profession, stressing that it is the duty of journalists to put the politicians on check rather than hobnobbing with them with a view to do shoddy jobs.
“Whatever is bad is bad, you can’t say because you are poorly paid and you turn to prostitution, corruption must be tamed.
“You can’t go far being a corrupt journalist and for the political journalists, it would even be worse.”
The President of the guild insisted that it is the job of everyone, particularly during the electioneering periods to do what was right.
“It is our job to put the politicians, all stakeholders on check, especially during the elections because if we leave them, to their narrow minded bidding, they would forget to do what the constitution say.
“Politicians are like unbelievers, they only read the sections of the scripture in the two Holy Books that they think is right for them.
“Like the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo said while speaking at the conference, protecting journalism profession is the responsibility of all of us, particularly the gate keepers.
“I implore all colleagues who are principal editors that we need to do anything within the professional bounds and boundaries to protect journalism.”
On the impact of technology and the social media, she said all conventional media outfit must brace up with the challenge, though they might not stop other people from doing their business.
“But as conventional media, we are standing on a firmer ground and we have structures, we should deploy them to do a better job with technology.
“On the 2019 general elections, we are doing our best by holding this conference, we do this every year and we will continue to engage editor’s band to remind ourselves of our duties.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed to deal with anyone who is against the peace and unity of Nigeria.
”Anybody that tries to joke with the unity of this country has a problem as long as we are alive,” President Buhari said as he played host to Eze Abdulfatah Emetumah III, the Offor of Umuofor Kingdom, Oguta local government area of Imo State today, Thursday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The President told members of the delegation led by the monarch, who is also the Chief Imam of Oguta that his main objective of serving as an elected public office holder is to make the country better.
”Our single objective is how to make Nigeria better and we will never get tired,” he said.
President Buhari, who thanked the delegation for identifying with the progress made so far by this administration in moving the nation forward, assured them that their well thought out recommendations on engendering unity in the country would be considered.
In his remarks, Eze Emetumah commended the President for demonstrating his love for Nigerians and Nigeria through purposeful leadership in the last three years.
”Your Excellency, from birth you have a mission for Nigeria and you have demonstrated this in your career as a soldier, Minister, Head of State, in PTF and now President.
”You have fought for the unity of this nation and its enemies, we know very well that you won’t tolerate anything that would affect its unity and our collective existence,” he said.
According to the royal father and cleric, it is noteworthy that under the present administration, dissemblers like Boko Haram and other anarchists have tasted the bitter pills.
”In agriculture, today locally produced rice has outnumbered the imported, while critical infrastructure especially Federal roads across the nation have improved and are still improving.”
The political space has now been centred on a single debate, which is, President Muhammadu Buhari, with his score card filled with numerous impacts to people’s lives, in addition to his indisputable and incontestable integrity, can Atiku Abubakar defeat him in a free and fair election? Everyone is now at liberty to choose between President Buhari and Atiku. In view of the above, as the 2019 election is under way, and for us to save ourselves from aftermath of election, we are at liberty to carefully evaluate and appraise both Buhari and Atiku.
Even though from the initial stage, I decided not to utter even a spew from these developments, but as I sat ruminating about Atiku’s past as Vice President under Olusegun Obasanjo, I failed to resist the urge to echo my position. Although, I will do everything possible to maintain objectivity to both the two contending aspirants, but despite this, as a major stakeholder in Nigerian project, and an anti-corruption protagonist, my objectivity must rate President Buhari higher than Atiku.
Before expressing myself further, let me clearly say, my main motive is not to coerce or induce anybody into voting for Buhari, but to freely exercise my inalienable right as non-partisan Nigerian, I must at this juncture unequivocally canvass in support of President Muhammadu Buhari. Sincerely speaking, if Atiku needs to woo me and my fellow anti-corruption proponents, I advise him to convince us beyond any shadow of doubt about his readiness in fighting corruption. I have every reason to say so, because what appalled me most was, without taking us too far, just recently, Atiku Abubakar granted an interview to some journalists, and he expressed utmost displeasure to Buhari’s anti-corruption fight, saying corruption is not Nigeria’s number one problem. By making this expression, Atiku has explicitly casted doubt in his commitment in fighting the vicious circles of corrupt elements. And again, by this assertion, one might assume that if Atiku becomes president, he will probably abandon all defense mechanisms used by Buhari in fighting corruption, and resets us back to the days of blemished ruling.
Our fear is, if Atiku finds his way to presidency, Treasury Single Account (T.S.A) might not be a driving mechanism that will govern the affairs of the state. While it’s interesting to note that, adoption of Treasury Single Account produced positive results, and as such contributed greatly in subjecting government affairs to probity. Furthermore, if we can recall, with the immediate inception of Buhari’s government, we have witnessed how T.S.A exposed a considerable number of double-dealings in numerous ministries, financial agencies and parastatals. For this reason, people need to know the type of magic wand Atiku will apply to consolidate Buhari’s anti-corruption achievements. Still, under this regard, most people’s concern is, since fighting corruption might not be Atiku’s number one concern, all leakages blocked by President Buhari might eventually be opened for corrupt people.
Because, as an astute observer of public affairs, I closely watched all proceedings of PDP’s primary election, to sum up all the events for you, none of all presidential aspirants present a clear-cut technique in fighting corruption, thus, fighting corruption is not in P.D.P’s book. One must wonder, despite all hardships we endured courtesy of corrupt government officials, why all the PDP’s presidential hopefuls chose to ignore this when soliciting for votes from delegates during their presidential primary election?

Can Atiku Fight Corruption? By Abbas Datti
The political space has now been centred on a single debate, which is, President Muhammadu Buhari, with his score card filled with numerous impacts to people’s lives, in addition to his indisputable and incontestable integrity, can Atiku Abubakar defeat him in a free and fair election?
