N28.84 Billion Recovered From Failed Bank Debtors – NDIC Boss

The Managing Director and Chief Executive, Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), Alhaji Umaru Ibrahim, has said that a total of N28.84 billion has so far been recovered from debtors of failed banks.

According to him, the recent recovery was N368. 43 million even as the Corporation had paid a total of N11.50 billion to depositors, creditors, shareholders and other stakeholders of closed financial institutions as at December 31 last year.

The NDIC boss, who was speaking at the Corporation’s Special Day at the ongoing 13th Abuja International Trade Fair, said that N21.85 billion had so far been realised from the sale of physical assets of closed banks as at 2017.

He said depositors of 16 deposit money banks (DMBs) in-liquidation have so far been fully paid all the deposit balances they had in their accounts at the closure of the financial institutions as at 2017.

Umar Ibrahim announced the successful conclusion of the adoption of bridge bank as a failure resolution option in 2011 by the corporation to address problems of the then three failing banks.

Represented by NDIC Director, Enterprise Risk Management Department, Mr. Peter Nggada, the NDIC boss noted that Keystone Bank Limited, the last of the three bridge banks to be sold, had been acquired by Sigma Golf River Bank Consortium in March 23, 2017, following the divestment of the Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON).

The bridge bank transaction also had the then Mainstreet Bank Plc acquired by the defunct Skye Bank Plc, while Heritage Bank Plc had bought over Enterprise Bank.

He said that in a bid to ensure financial system stability in the country, the NDIC in partnership with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had conducted on-site and off-site supervision of 25 DMBs, one non-interest bank, 1,008 microfinance banks (MFBs) and 38 primary mortgage banks (PMBs) using the risk-based examination of three banks with holding companies.

He added that as a risk minimiser, the corporation in collaboration with the CBN, exists to protect depositors’ funds through effective supervision of banks as well as timely resolution of distressed financial institutions “like we saw in the case of the defunct Skye Bank and the establishment of Polaris Bank to assume it’s assets and liabilities”.

“When various resolution measures fail, the corporation could, as the last option, liquidate the failed banks and ensure the prompt payment of all insured deposits.”

He reiterated the commitment of NDIC to complement the roles of other regulators and institutions to ensure that the soundness and stability required to support agro-based small and medium enterprises is provided.

He urged Nigerians to ensure that they banked their monies only with NDIC-certified financial institutions so as to safeguard such investments in the event of failure.

He added that the NDIC had gone from strength to strength in the implementation of its mandate in ensuring that the overriding public policy objectives for establishing an explicit Deposit Insurance System (DIS) in the country are fully realized.

Interest Of Lagos Supersedes That Of Individual, Group – Gov Ambode

Lagos Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode

Lagos State governor has made it clear that the interest of Lagos State supersedes that of individual and group. He added that the progress of Lagos state is non-negotiable.

“It is a project that I have passionately worked for in the last three and half years as your Governor and one to which I will forever be devoted.”

In a broadcast to the people of the State today, Wednesday, conceding defeat after the governorship primary election conducted by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), on which ticket he won election in 2015 to become governor, Ambode said: “the last few days have witnessed intense political activities that have gripped the attention of the nation and created palpable tension in the polity. “I thank all Lagosians for their faith and trust in me. I urge you not to relent in your support for our party as we prepare for the General Elections.”

Gov Okorocha Wants Gulak Arrested For Anti-Democratic Practice

Gov Rochas Okorocha

The Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has ordered the arrest of the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), primary election committee in the state, Ahmed Gulak.

Reacting to the declaration of a serving Senator, Hope Uzondima as winner of the governorship primary election in the State, which the national chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole described as ‘fake,’ Okorocha insisted that Gulak should be arrested and punished for anti-democratic actions.

The governor, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, said: “We call for the arrest and prosecution of Alhaji Gulak because there is punishment for his anti-democratic action and his false claim of kidnap attempt. We must begin to tell men like Gulak and Senator Hope Uzodinma that it cannot be business as usual.

“Alhaji Ahmed Gulak, former Political Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan and of course, the Chairman of the disbanded Imo State Governorship Primary Election Committee had told the media on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 that he fled Owerri by 4am because agents of Governor Rochas Okorocha had attempted to kidnap him and three other members of the 12-member Committee. The media had reported what he told them.

“If you ask me, men like Alhaji Gulak can’t build a nation. They not only constitute serious threat to our promising democracy but also danger to this great nation. Giving men like him national assignment like the one he was sent to Imo State to do was just licensing him to blackmail the nation and put our democracy to ridicule. And there are certain lies or actions a man who had been the Political Adviser to a former President of the nation should have overgrown, no matter the temptation.”

“The childish tale of his attempted kidnap was just an afterthought. He knew he didn’t act well his part and was only trying to see how he could come out from the tight corner he had boxed himself into.

“The man called Alhaji Ahmed Gulak flew into Owerri by 12:45pm on Monday, October 1, 2018, being the day slated for the guber primary. And let him publish his flight documents to prove us right or wrong. They went straight to the Police Headquarters where they deposited all the materials for the governorship primary.

“After that, the committee members entered into a lengthy meeting with the candidates, stakeholders, and Heads of Security Agencies in the State. The meeting lingered till 6:30pm.At the end of the meeting, he announced that the primary would now hold on Tuesday, October 2, 2018.

“And reporters who were at the Police Headquarters waiting for the outcome of the meeting went and reported that the Imo primary would now hold on Tuesday, October 2, 2018. At the end, they went to their hotel to clean up and eat.

“With all these activities, the courtesy call he was to pay on the governor with members of his committee could not take place till. 8:45pm that Monday. The courtesy call lasted for about an hour. All said and done, they left the Government House for their hotel at about 9:55pm.

“They lodged at Rockview Hotel Owerri that shares fence with the Police Headquarters and the other end of the hotel, the Owerri Prison, with Soldiers on guard. The hotel is also close to the Government House Owerri with a team of Mobile Policemen on twenty-four hours duty.

“So, the question patriotic Nigerians should ask Alhaji Gulak is that, if you left Government House by 9:55pm and you claimed you fled Owerri by 4am, and considering the location of Rockview Hotel where they lodged, then, when and where did the kidnap attempt take place?

“And why should he be kidnapped when the materials for the primary were kept at Police Headquarters. And of what value would have his kidnap served anybody since he didn’t have any material and the primary hadn’t been conducted.

“It is now left for Nigerians to ask him where he got the results for which he declared Senator Hope Uzodinma winner. In fact, we do not subscribe to people talking about PDP when men like Gulak who left the party just few months ago act funny. It is a personal thing. It has nothing to do with PDP. Some people live. Some others exist. Those who just exist do not have souls, and for them, anything goes.

“Ahmed Gulak and Hope Uzodinma had belonged to Alhaji Modu Sheriff’s faction of the PDP. That is the relationship between him and Hope Uzodinma. We also believe that those who sent him didn’t have this information. But even at that, a former Political Adviser to a Former President should have lived above board.

“Do not also forget that a day before the Primary, Chief Hope Uzodinma who the Court had issued warrant of arrest against him for issuing billions of naira Dud cheque to a business partner had also claimed kidnap attempt against his person also by agents of the State Governor. They must be spirits to be escaping from these imaginary kidnap attempts. In fact, show me your friend, and I tell you who you are.

“Finally, Hope Uzodinma is not a member APC in Imo State. He claimed to have joined the party six months ago. Even at that, he does not have any support in any Local Government in Imo State. We shall be shocked to see him stand in his Local Government, Oru East, and we see twenty APC members queuing behind him. He does not believe in the ballot box.

“He was one of those who in 2015 labeled Okorocha Alhaji in Government House, Okoro-Hausa and that he was planning with President Muhammadu Buhari to Islamise Igboland, all because of APC. And few years after, he has come to cause trouble in the Party and to reap where he didn’t sow: we do not think it is the right thing. No landlord vacates his house for an unfaithful and unreliable tenant.”

It was reported that prior to the commencement of the election, Gulak had left the state under controversial circumstances and later appeared in Abuja, declaring Senator Uzondinma as winner of the election.

Gulak also alleged that Governor Okorocha attempted to kidnap him.

Kano PDP Kicks As Kwankwaso Anointed Wins Governorship Primary Election

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State has described the governorship primary election conducted yesterday, Monday by the Electoral Committee constituted by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) as kangaroo.

Abba Kabiru Yusuf, the anointed aspirant of the former State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso emerged as party’s governorship candidate in the state. Abba Kabiru Yusuf is Kwankwaso’s son in-law.

The primary election was held at the Lugard Avenue, personal residence of Kwankwaso,

Speaking to news men today, Tuesday in Kano, the State Chairman of the party, Senator Mas’ud Doguwa, described the election that was conducted by committee headed by Ezeogu Emeka-Onuaha as null and void.

“With this attitude of impunity of enforcing candidates on members of the party, the national leadership of the party is doing nothing but paving way for the All progressives Congress (APC) to win elections in Kano State.”

He said that a court had ordered a substantial order that the party’s caretakers were operating illegally, yet they went ahead and conducted the governorship primaries, saying members of the party would not accept such illegality

The news conference which was attended by aspirants for state House of Assembly and National Assembly, described the poll as ‘Kangaroo elections’ and unacceptable.

The chairman advised the National leadership of the party to ensure justice and fairness for the survival of the party in the state.

Imo Governorship Primary: Oshiomhole Writes Off Gulak Committee Report

Adams Oshiomhole

The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, has written off the report of the Ahmed Gulak-led committee on the party’s governorship primaries in Imo State.

Oshiomhole, who spoke to newsmen at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari today, Tuesday, said that the results being paraded as the result of the Imo governorship primaries is fake.

Oshimhole, who was two-term governor of Edo State said: “the case of Imo State is not too good news for today, but not surprising, they have to learn to begin to comply with rules.

“They have two fake results. None of them is genuine and we will disband (the committee). We will appoint fresh committee; an electoral panel that will conduct transparent direct primaries that reflect the will of members of APC in Imo State, regardless of the interest and the powers that were behind any of the groups.

“The truth does not require supporters’ club to stand; it has its legs, it has its heads and we will do just that.”
