Am Not Losing Sleep Over APC’s Plot To Impeach Me- Saraki

L-R Ifeanyi Okowa, Delta State Governor & Bukola Saraki, Senate President | Credit: PT

Senate President,  Dr. Bukola Saraki, has said that he was not losing sleep over the plot to impeach him by some Senators and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Saraki who spoke to newsmen in Asaba after a closed door meeting with Governor Ifeanyi Okowa debunked claims that the Senate was yet to reconvene due to fear of his impeachment, adding that those who had gone to the roof top to announce the plot to impeach him, should have dissipated such energy on democratic ideals that would better the lots of Nigerians.

He said; “I am not losing any sleep about impeachment, we have a country that a lot of Nigerians believe there must be rule of law, those who are talking about impeachment are engaging in cheap blackmail and I am not concerned about that”.

The Senate President said the mass defection to the PDP was because the APC has denied Nigerians of true democracy in the past three years, adding that nothing would derail the present Senate from upholding the tenets of good governance.

He insisted that no amount of political intimidation and security harassment would prevent the business of law-making that would impact positively on the country, saying that “our ideas and visions on what we expect in a democratic setting were not met in APC, hence we left.

Lagos Carter Bridge Structurally Safe, 3rd Mainland Bridge Tests Progressing — Officials

The Director, Highways, Bridges and Designs in the Federal Ministry of Works, Mr Adetokunbo Sogbesan, has said that the Carter Bridge is structurally okay and safe for use.

A portion of the outer walls of the bridge outbound Iddo link road was dented.

Sogbesan told journalists during an inspection of the bridge that some tests had been conducted and that the bridge is structurally okay and safe for use.

He said vehicles carrying excess load beyond the headwall of the bridge had knocked off outer slabs meant to beautify the bridge.

He explained that the beams of the bridge had hollows which were covered by slabs but that vehicles carrying loads beyond their headroom pulled off some outer covering of the bridge.

“We are here to allay the fears of Lagosians about the Carter Bridge. This bridge was commissioned in July 1958, that is, over 60 years ago.

“And it was constructed by Borini Prono Nigeria Ltd. The method of construction used is that the beams have hollows.

“The hollows are spaces. The structurally stability of the bridge both longitudinal and diagonal beams are structurally okay but for aesthetics measures the beams were covered with reinforced walls.

“It is the walls that are broken. We have been here before to examine and inspect the bridge and we are to confirm that structurally, the bridge is okay,” Sogbesan said.

Sogbesan also said that barricades would be put on Iddo link road where the problem occurred to ensure that only cars and buses use the road to avert damage to the bridge.

According to the director, the link road was originally built by Lagos State Government to allow cars and buses pass through the Third Mainland and Carter bridges to the Island.

Sogbesan warned all illegal occupants encroaching under the bridge to quit, saying they will soon be evacuated.

“All illegal occupants under this bridge must leave, the abuse on this bridge to stop.

“We will start enforcement immediately, we would issue notices and we are going to enforce it. We are going to evict every illegal occupant under the bridge. We don’t want abuses on the bridges again.

“We must move them out and we are going to collaborate with Lagos State,” he said.

Mr Gainrranco Albertazzi, Joint Managing Director, Borini Prono, who confirmed that the bridge was constructed by the firm in 1958,saidthe Carter bridge was not damaged.

“It is only the damage done by a vehicle carrying some loads that should not have passed through the bridge, but the main beam is structurally intact.

“What has been touched is the cover which is of a small thickness which is not too important.

“More so, this first beam is only carrying the pedestrian lane, it is not carrying any vehicular traffic,” he also told journalists.

He said there was no cause for alarm as the bridge’s slab could easily be replaced.

He stressed the need to speed up the construction of the barricades to stop further damage beyond the slabs.

The Federal Controller of Works, Lagos State, Mr Adedamola Kuti, said a task force was being set up to dislodge illegal occupants under all the bridges in Lagos.

“We are going to evict illegal occupants of our infrastructure.”

While inspecting the Third Mainland Bridge, he said significant progress had been made on the testing of the expansion joints.

Kuti said: “We have gone very far, we have made appreciable progress as far as this investigative test is concerned.

“We have made substantial progress, our target is that tomorrow (Sunday) we will make the Third Mainland Bridge accessible.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that workmen moved some equipment and censors on the bridge as they tested the expansion joints with security agents guarding the bridge on all sides.

However, youths and children used both carriageways on the Owonronsoki end of the bridge that has been barricaded to play football.

The 11.8km bridge was closed to traffic on Aug. 24 for investigative maintenance tests and it is expected to be reopened to traffic Aug. 26.

Buhari To Soldiers: Be Ruthless, Don’t Spare Militant Herdsmen, Others

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered soldiers to be ruthless in dealing with militant herdsmen and others who have constituted insecurity to Nigeria.

The President, who today, Saturday,  paid surprise visit on the troops deployed to curb the activities of bandits and criminals in Zamfara and neighbouring states under Operations Sharan Daji and Diran Mikiya from Katsina axis, commended them for their service and dedication to the nation.

Buhari, who made the visit to the troops the last thing before leaving for Abuja from Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport, Katsina, assured them that as a worthy commander in Chieftain, he is solidly behind them.

“I am here and pleased at this opportunity to address you and express my pleasure and happiness as your Commander-in-Chief I am here and pleased at this opportunity to address you and express my pleasure and happiness as your Commander-in-Chief on your performance on the two respective operations.

‘‘Nigerians are looking up to you and us to secure the country. What is happening in the areas of operations are disgraceful. I’m very pleased with the way officers and men are firmly putting it down and I want you to be as ruthless as humanly possible. Nigerians deserve some peace.’’

The President reminded the troops that when he was elected into office in 2015, he promised the nation security, an improved economy and a commitment to fight corruption.

‘‘The country has to be secured to be managed…we have been doing our best and we depend a lot on you to do what is needed in the field. I do not want you to spare any cattle rustler, armed robber or any person who thinks he is above the law.

‘‘I commend you for the job you have been doing so far and I assure you that I will continue to be a worthy Commander-in-Chief. Thank you very much and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

In his brief to the President, Air Vice Marshall Sampson Akpasa the Air Officer Commanding Special Operations Command, NAF, said  locations such as Mashema, Shinkafi, Ajia, Rafi, Shamashalle, Zurmi and Galadi in Zamfara State, previously used as staging and trading bases by the bandits have been made untenable through sustained air interdiction and armed reconnaissance.

‘‘The air efforts in the last couple of weeks also provided close air support to ground troops on various occasions. Additionally, the Air Task Force(ATF) responded to several distress calls from sister security forces and locals by neutralising the identified massed bandits and preventing imminent attacks on villages/towns such as Yanwari and Hayin Alhaj.” Akpasa said.

In the spirit of the Sallah celebrations, the President donated five bulls to the troops.

CBN Pumps $543m, CNY 63m Into Forex Market

CBN-Office-Abuja

…Retail segment receives $323m boost
…Wholesale segment gets $100m
…SMEs, Invisibles get $55m each

ABUJA – In another major round of interventions, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Thursday, August 23 and Friday, August 24, 2018, injected a total sum of $543.22 million and CNY 63.21 million into the inter-bank foreign exchange market.

At the Thursday’s trading, the Bank offered the sum of $100,000,000 as wholesale interventions and allocated the sum of $55,000,000 to the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) forex window. Also, the invisibles window, which caters for customers requiring forex for Business/Personal Travel Allowances, tuition and medical fees, among others, received $55 million.

Similarly, on Friday, August 24, 2018, the Bank injected the sum of $323.22 million into the interbank retail Secondary Market Intervention Sales and sold a total of CNY 63.21 million in the spot and short-tenored forwards, arising from bids received from authorized dealers

The CBN spokesperson, Isaac Okorafor, who confirmed the figures, said the Bank remained committed to maintaining the country’s external reserves to safeguard the international value of the Naira in line with the Bank’s mandate. According to him, the Bank’s management of the forex market had entrenched transparency in the market and continued to strengthen the value of the naira against other major currencies of the world.

On the sale of Chinese Yuan (Renminbi), Mr. Okorafor disclosed that it was in line with the CBN guidelines, which stipulate that it would be for the payment of Renminbi denominated Letters of Credit for agriculture as well as raw materials.

While also noting that availability of the Chinese currency would ease pressure on the Nigerian foreign exchange market, he attributed the relative stability in the foreign exchange market to the intervention of the CBN as well as the sustained increase in crude oil prices in the international market. He further pledged that the Bank would ensure that the requirements of customers in all sectors of the foreign exchange market are guaranteed access to required foreign exchange.

Meanwhile, $1 exchanged for N360 at the Bureau de Change (BDC) segment of the foreign exchange market, while CNY 1 exchanged for N53.17.

Nigeria, Atiku And The Mandela Option, By Ethelbert Okere

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Buhari presidency would have since began to concoct another lie to tell the people of the Southeast, if you like, the Igbo following, the recent declaration by former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, that he will do only one term of four years if elected president next year.

Atiku, unarguably the most visible and most highly rated presidential aspirant in the current season, had, in a recent interview with a Nigerian newspaper, reportedly said: “… I have said it before on my own initiative… if I am elected as the president in 2019; I give an undertaking that I would only do one term… I am prepared to sign an undertaking to do only one term”.

Reminded by his interviewers that President Muhammadu Buhari made a similar pledge in 2011 but has reneged on that, Atiku Abubakar responded as follows: “I am not Muhammadu Buhari. I do not make promises I cannot keep. I am assuring Nigerians that I will keep this promise. I am making it out here in the open. I am willing to sign a written document. If you or any other Nigerian can come up with an iron-clad legal document that binds me, I am willing to publicly commit to it”.

The above declaration by Atiku Abubakar is of immense significance on Nigerian’s national politics, especially with regards to the 2019 presidential election but its immediate implication is that it effectively punctures the dummy President Buhari’s strategists were selling to the people of the Southeast namely, that only the re-election of Buhari will guarantee the emergence of an Igbo as president (of Nigeria) in 2023.

According to this narrative, Buhari is the only Northerner who will mandatorily vacate office in 2023 thus paving way for an Igbo to take over. Any other candidate from the North, they argue, will want to do eight years in office, thereby delaying Igbo ascendency to the Nigerian presidency till 2027.

As a matter of fact, it was some Igbo elements that  – for want of what to tell their Igbo brethren in canvassing for their support for Buhari’s re-election bid – initiated this narrative, namely that the Nigerian presidency will be theirs in 2023 after Buhari’s second term. It must have been this position taken by Igbo leaders themselves that enabled President Buhari to formally approach the Igbo with his dummy to ensure their ascendancy to presidential power in 2023 as a reward for their support for his re-election in 2019.

President Buhari made this undertaking through one of his closest aides, Mr. Boss Mustapha, the secretary to the federal government, at an APC rally in Owerri, Imo state on July 5, 2018. Even though Buhari, speaking through Mastapha, was cautious and deliberate in his choice of language, his message was clear. This was how Mustapha put it across: “What happens in 2019 will go a long way in determining the fate of the Igbo as it concerns 2023 presidency… so it is important that they put away sentiments in the overall interest of the Igbo nation and ensure that the APC gets a landslide victory in the Southeast”. Somewhere in the course of his speech, Mr. Mustapha also reportedly said as follows: “let me say this, 2019 is an election that will make or mar the chances of Igbo in Nigeria…”

Of course, Mustapha (though he was believed to be speaking the mind of the president) was severally reprimanded for his insinuations. He was told in black and white that the Igbo do not, and will never, predicate their future on the re-election or otherwise of the president. More importantly, the Igbo in general made it clear that they were neither enamored by the promise of the 2023 presidency nor were they convinced that President Buhari is or will be in a position to determine who will become Nigeria’s president in 2023; or from which section of the country he or she will come from. But even so, the latest pronouncement by Atiku has put a lie to all that. Consequently, Buhari’s strategists must be looking for something else to the Igbo.  However, his avowal to do only one term of four years transcends its repudiation of the proposed 2023 Greek gift to the Igbo. Among other things, Atiku’s assurances will have implications on the concern of the younger generation of politicians over their limited access to political power. Although this writer in particular is not enthusiastic about things like the not-too-young to-run mantra, Atiku’s pledge to do one term of four years will lower the anxiety of the younger politicians who were initially worried that the involvement of people of his caliber and age will once again deny them the opportunity of ascending presidential power as earlier as next year.

While it is yet morning on creation day as far as the 2019 presidency is concerned, even the least discerning observer can notice that the possibility of a thirty something-year old emerging the president of Nigeria next year is quite remote. But Atiku’s four-year term will be a bridge between the past and the future as well as the old and the young. In a previous article (titled, Outside Running, One Else Can Nigerian Youths Do?), I argued that transferring power to the younger generation in a democratic setting is not something that can be achieved with the type of drama and alacrity that some of the younger elements envisage; rather, it is something that has to be deliberately packaged by the so called older politicians and delivered by them.

My view, as I expressed in that article, is that unlike in the immediate pre and post independent era, the country now has an army of well educated, wealthy and highly connected elders who, outside of a very bloody revolution, cannot be booted out of power just like that.

In my view, what the younger generation of politicians, especially those in their thirties and forties, should do is to liaise with   people like Atiku who had had access to political power and who must inevitably, at least on account of age, retire from active politics between now and 2023. It is this category of people that will prepare them for taking over, more than the fifty smoothing year-olds who, because age will still be on their side even beyond 2023, would still be in contention for power at all levels .Differently put, let the younger elements key into Atiku’s pledge and approach him for a formalization of an understanding that will see him play the role of a vehicle to effortlessly transfer power to them in 2023.

Fortunately, the young people have something to fall on; which is Atiku’s pedigree is canvassing for a political restructuring of the country as a sine qua non both for effective governance of the country and for the peaceful co-existence of Nigerians in the context of fairness, justice and equity.

If we add this to the high imperative of an orderly transfer of power to the younger generation, then we will see that the Mandela option being adopted by Atiku Abubakar is certainly not out of desperation   for presidential power, contrary to the notion being created by some commentators.  For example, writing recently in his popular column in the Nation newspaper, Mr. Idowu Akinlotan, made the following observations about Atiku: “The country seems to have made up its mind cruelly against him, bewitched by propaganda and half-truths that are closer to fiction them reality”. Then the columnist concludes thus: “This may be why Alhaji Abubakar, perhaps out of desperation than anything else, is promising to do only one term should he be elected president…”

Yet in the next paragraph, Mr. Akinlotan writes as follows: “The former vice president has demonstrated enough courage and COMPETENCE (emphasis mine) to rule Nigeria far better than past presidents should he be offered the chance. But he has made enough enemies, some of them better and intransigent, to deny him the ultimate prize. He will need a miracle to get the ticket and greater miracle to win the election. Nothing is impossible however. But given the present mood of the country, few Nigerians are willing to make him more than a cipher in the race, even if he were to promise utopia and eternal life”.

Now, let us look at an earlier passage in the same article entitled, “Atiku’s One-term Presidential Gambit” .Akinlotan wrote: “But hate him or love him, he is exposed and cosmopolitan, far more than President Muhammadu Buhari and with extensive contacts around the country. He is far better than the president in mentoring. He is also far more cerebral than the president, possessing a capacity to engage meaningfully in group discussions and managing at the end to own the ideas peddled in those ardent and sometimes recondite fora. He is not a philosopher…but he possesses passing understanding of current national issues sufficient enough to help him navigate crises and propound solutions.”

If we place the above passages side by side, we will immediately see them repudiating each other. Within the passages themselves we will also see contradictions between lines. But I hasten to add that it is not necessarily the writer contradicting himself. It is the testimonies he is giving about our dear country that are contradicting each other. For example, in a clime where sanity prevails, the same fellow cannot “demonstrate enough courage and competence to rule Nigeria far better than past presidents…” and at the same time “… needs a miracle” to win an election. A typical outsider will ask: “what type of people are these?”

Nigerians, as attested to by Akinlotan, acknowledge that Atiku Abubakar “is far better than the president (Buhari) at mentoring… more cerebral than the president, possessing a capacity to engage meaningfully in group discussion… possess passing understanding of current national issues sufficient enough to help him navigate crises and propound solution… “.Yet, it is said of the same Atiku that “the country seems to have made up its mind cruelly against him”. Again a typically outsider will ask: “Which country is this?” But even more puzzling to the outsider would be when he reads just in the next sentence that the reason for this cruelty is that the citizens are “bewitched by propaganda and half truths that are closer to fiction than reality”.

I would recommend Akinlotan’s column (The Nation, Sunday August 19, 2018) to every well meaning Nigerian because it tells the story of Nigeria more than it is a commentary on Atiku’s apparent desperation at getting elected president of Nigeria next year. I believe that every well meaning Nigerian would, upon reading the article, ask himself: Is this the image we should cut as a people? A people “bewitched”, as Akinlotan puts it, “by propaganda and half-truths that are closer to fiction than reality”? Atiku or no Atiku, is that how Nigerians want to be characterized?

One final irony, however: The article in questions reads conclusively as follows in the last sentences: “The former vice president has   demonstrated enough competence to rule Nigeria… but he has made enough enemies… to deny him the ultimate prize…”. My take here is that apart from that the above quote repudiates the overall image the writer painted  about Atiku, as  “cosmopolitan”, a “ better mentor”, “exposed”, “possessing more capacity to engage” etc, it is not true, at all, that he has “made enough enemies”. It is a hyperbole which the writer needlessly resorted to.  Pray, who are these enemies of Atiku? What is their numerical strength? Differently put still, is it only “enemies” that Atiku Abubakar has in a country where he has been earlier described as having “so much reach”?  As I write, there are over 1,000 support groups across the country working for Atiku’s presidential bid; all independently of him and footing their own bills.

In employing the phrase, the Mandela Option, to situate Atiku’s deliberate choice to go for only one term if elected, I am looking at the similarity between the South African society, before the late icon took over, and what obtains currently in the Nigerian society. Agreed, Nigeria is not an apartheid enclave but its citizens have no sense of belonging, are alienated from the state, some are treated as second class citizen; they kill themselves and live in a society where fairness, justice and equity have no room.

Just as Mandela chose to do with his own people, I believe Atiku’s burning desire is to reconcile Nigerians with one another. Nigeria requires a new president with new ideas and an enthusiasm to prove himself. Nelson Mandela was not desperate to become South African’s president. His ascendance was a historical imperative and I believe that Atiku Abubakar’s imminent presidency is fashioned along a similar calling.

Buhari Appreciates Understanding Of Nigerians On His Govt Social Intervention Programmes

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their patience and understanding of his government implementation of policies and projects aimed at improving the standard of living in the country.
Receiving the leadership of Kano Traders Association led by Alhaji Ahmed Nuhu Sani, Chairman of Kanti Kwari Traders Association Friday in Daura, President Buhari pledged that his administration will not relent in doing the needful to create jobs, expand trade and encourage greater productivity.
The President told members of the business community that under the Government Enterprises and Empowerment Programme (GEEP) and the CBN Anchor Borrowers Programme (ABP), more traders and farmers have expanded their trade and increased food production.
While the GEEP provides free interest loans to farmers, the N40 billion ABP targets rice farmers across the country to boost their production.
According to the President, some of the policies and projects were misconstrued by some critics at the beginning of this administration but with steady and rigorous implementation they have realized that these interventions are very beneficial for the development of the country.
The President promised to look into the concerns of the traders on the GEEP programme as well as the influx and dominance of foreigners in the retail sector.
Earlier in his remarks, Sani had commended the President for reviving the $2.8 billon Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano gas pipeline, which was abandoned by the previous administration due to corruption and mismanagement.
The market leader also applauded the Buhari administration for the ongoing works at river ports in Baro, Niger State, Lokoja, Kogi State and Oguta in Imo State which were abandoned for about a decade but will now be completed before May 2019.
‘‘It is also another gesture of Mr. President in fulfilling his promise to end fuel problem in Nigeria by signing the Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of a new 150,000 barrels per day refinery in Katsina State.”

APC Will Win 2019 Elections, President Buhari Concludes

President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has delivered a verdict that come 2019, with  the string of victory recorded by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in bye-elections in Bauchi, Katsina and Kogi States the party will easily win.

Receiving the representatives of the 34 Chairmen of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Katsina State, today,  Friday at his Daura country home,  President Buhari said: “coming against the backdrop of the victory in Ekiti governorship election, the string of victory by our party, the APC, is a clear indication of the way things will go in 2019.
‘‘For those who are discerning; those who have ears and eyes they will see, hear and understand. Those who don’t understand are entitled to their mistaken assumptions.”
The President emphasized that the victories in the recent polls are indeed “the sign of things to come.”
He thanked the leaders of the association for paying Sallah homage to him and for their message of congratulations on the performance of the party and the administration, assuring them that he would continue to do his best for the nation.
Speaking on behalf of the members, the Chairman of ALGON in the State, Alhaji Mohammed Na’Allah, expressed their support and commitment to the success of the Buhari Administration.
At another meeting with the leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Katsina State, President Buhari expressed his continued determination to respect the diversity of the country, saying that he will run a government that is fair and just to all Nigerians.
The President thanked the CAN leadership in the State for living in peace and harmony with other religious groups, and for supporting his administration in its policies and programmes
The CAN leaders who spoke during the visit, the State Chairman, Rev. Nelson Onyeakachukwu, and an elder and coordinator of the Christian Pilgrimage in the State, Haruna Danjuma expressed happiness with the President’s performance.
They described him as the State’s good ambassador who had made everyone proud.
“Christians in Katsina are happy with both Governor Masari in the State and yourself at the center. We will continue to support both of you.”

Buhari To Atiku: I Did Not Trek For Political Showmanship

President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has made it clear that when he trekked for some metres in his Daura country home recently, he did not do so to score any political point.

Apparently responding to the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar who read meaning into his walk on a Daura street to greet people, Buhari said that  the issue of his opting to trek some distance after observing Eid prayers at Kofar Arewa Eid Ground came about because of the humbling hero’s welcome from the well-wishers that lined the street.

In a meeting with representatives of the five local governments in Daura Emirate today, Friday, President Buhari explained that the walk was not about proving his fitness level or scoring cheap political capital.

‘‘This is my constituency, the people came out in their large numbers to see me and the car in which I was being driven had tinted windows.

‘‘They were not seeing me so I came down so they could see me. I didn’t need to convince anyone about my health and the decision to contest for a second term- a decision that I made public in April this year.”

The President used the opportunity of his meeting with his kinsmen to inform them that he has directed the Ministry of Agriculture and the CBN to review the processes on the issuance of loans to smallholder farmers.

‘‘We want to make it easier for them to assess the loans, particularly the underprivileged people in the society. It has become necessary for the government to do this because banks will insist on collaterals which majority of farmers do not have.

‘‘For our agriculture policy to succeed, we must be able to reach small farm holders with loans without collaterals.  Collaterals are always a problem with smallholder farmers,’’ he said.

The President also highlighted the achievements of the administration on local rice productions which had expectedly led to the reduction of imports by over 90 percent.

The President expressed delight that young people are returning to the farms and reaffirmed the Federal government’s commitment to implement policies to promote agriculture.

Speaking on behalf of the civil society groups in Daura Emirate, the spokesman of the group, Yusuf Bello Maiadua, applauded the President on his numerous achievements.

‘‘You have made us proud, the economy is back on the path of growth and you have laid a solid foundation for the development of the country.

Maiadua who hinted the President of plans by the Daura Emirate to organise a massive rally for his 2019 campaign as soon as the ban on political campaign is lifted, invited him to make out time to attend.

FG Inaugurates Reconstructed Maska Earth Dam

Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu

The Federal Government has inaugurated the reconstructed Maska Earth Dam in Funtua Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu, handed over the completed project executed by the Ecological Funds Office (EFO) to the people of the community on Thursday.

Adamu said the project was expected to address the decay and degradation of the dam which provides water for agriculture and other purposes in the community.

“The overall objective of this project is to increase the capacity of the dam to provide adequate water for farming and grazing purposes.

“The project,  which is one of the ecological intervention projects across the six geo-political zones of Nigeria,  will ameliorate the problems of the people of the local government area,” he said.

He said the project underscored the Federal Government’s concerted effort and sincerity of purpose in tackling environmental problems and making life more meaningful for the people.

“I have no doubt that this laudable project has set the stage for the re-invigoration of agricultural production and other economic activities expected to stabilise the socio-economic life of the people,’’ he added.

Dr Habiba Lawal, the Permanent Secretary of the EFO, said that the project was one of the many that had been executed across the country in 2018.

Represented by Mr Awwal Sani, a Deputy Director in the Office, Lawal urged residents of the community to take responsibility for maintaining and protecting the project.

“The people’s protection and maintenance of government projects will ensure that the resources which the Federal Government committed into the projects would not have been wasted,’’ Lawal said.

The Magaji Maska, Alhaji Abdullahi Umar, who received the certificate of completion prayed to God to bless the present administration for coming to the rescue of the community.

“I really thank God for allowing the completion of this project and we appreciate the Federal Government’s effort because this is what we have been hoping will come to fruition for a long time now.

“ With God, the intervention has now come.
