Nigeria’s House of Representatives has asked President Bola Tinubu and agents of the Federal Government to suspend the implementation of the Samoa Agreement signed recently, until the conclusion of an investigation into the matter. This followed the adoption of a motion by the Deputy Minority Leader, Aliyu Madaki and 88 others, at today’s (July 9) plenary. The Lawmakers had called attention to some allegedly offensive clauses in the agreement. The federal government recently signed the Samoa Agreement, which has been trailed by controversy, with several Nigerians kicking against it. Madaki, in his lead debate, said the agreement purportedly promotes LGBT rights, which are against extant laws in the country. …Details later.
A northern socio-economic group, Arewa Economic Forum (AEF) has painted a sordid picture of how bandit, kidnappers and cattle rustlers have chased away farmers from no fewer than 60 percent of the northern arable land. Chairman of the Forum, Ibrahim Shehu Dandakata, at a media briefing today, July 9, stressed the need for the government to embark on concerted effort to find urgent solution and combat food insecurity. The chairman emphasised the need for a secure environment for cattle rearing to address the issues of banditry and cattle rustling, which contribute to protein shortages. “Whether we like it or not, the issue of hunger is real, and this is undoubtedly linked to the insecurity in the North, which has resulted in the abandonment of 60% of arable land in the region for over five years. “Consequently, the cost of protein has skyrocketed and cattle rustling, which has escalated to banditry, significantly contributes to the people’s ordeal. “Moreover, since crop farming and cattle rearing have been devastated by insecurity, it is imperative that all hands are on deck to overcome this situation. “Although our solutions may not be exhaustive, they will undoubtedly pave the way forward. “Firstly, we must establish safe enclaves for cattle rearing. “Notably, the first victims of banditry are the Fulanis, with bandit-Fulanis victimizing non-bandit Fulanis who are legitimate pastoralists. “Such safe enclaves, in the form of grazing reserves, will provide a haven for Fulanis, with the government offering necessary support, while also collaborating with the private sector and NGOs to ensure adequate security and prevent encroachment by foreigners. “The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has a dedicated unit, the Agro Rangers, who have been performing well. “However, our defense agencies are overstretched. By providing a secure enclave for farmers, we can ensure their safety and security.” “Furthermore, regarding crop production, thousands of hectares lie fallow across northern Nigeria, and the solution lies in fully empowering the Bank of Agriculture (BoA) to fulfill its mandate.” When asked about border opening as a solution for food sufficiency in the country, the chairman noted that any imports we require necessitate dollars, which are in short supply in Nigeria. “As a non-producing nation, our demand for foreign exchange far exceeds the available supply. “Therefore, even if the government permits importation, the necessary dollars are not available, making this solution untenable. “While it might offer temporary relief, we must address the root causes at the grassroots level.” Source:PRNigeria
The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election in Nigeria, Peter Obi, has donated the sum of N10 Million to Grimard College of Nursing Sciences, Anyigba, Kogi State, for the training of medical nurses. Peter Obi, who visited the College yesterday, July 8, described nurses as the centre of primary healthcare delivery in the country. Peter Obi reminded the nursing students that they are in a noble profession which cares for humanity. “I am particularly concerned about the training of more nurses who play very vital roles in caring for the health of society. “As experts continue to warn of a severe shortage of nurses, we must remain proactive by investing in their training, through that, we can have enough for our domestic health sector, and export more to the global community.” He said that his commitment to building a better nation through investing in the critical areas of human and national development such as health and education, is for the good of the nation and the future of the society. According to him, Nigeria is today undeveloped because government has not aggressively invested in the critical areas of development like health, education and pulling people out of poverty. He said that the nation is, today, facing serious challenges of insecurity and other socio-economic challenges due to lack of investment in these critical areas. “I have not only remained consistent in urging governments, at all levels, to invest more in health and education, but I have also continued to call on donor agencies to do the same. Our investment in the future of our children is for the good of society and the progress of our nation.” Peter Obi appreciated the Proprietor of the College, Bishop Anthony Ademu Adaji, the Management and the Staff of the College for their commitment to training compassionate and competent healthcare professionals. “Our commitment remains to build a new Nigeria which offers Nigerians access to good healthcare and educational opportunities. It is POssible.”
“For the avoidance of any doubt, the SAMOA agreement does not, in any way, seek to compromise our existing legislations nor undermine the sovereignty of Nigeria.” This is the position of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), dismissing claims and insinuations in some quarters that the Samoa Agreement, signed by the Federal Government, requires Nigeria to endorse or accept LGBTQ rights. NBA is made up of legal practitioners in Nigeria. In a statement, the President of the Association, Yakubu Maikyau, stressed that the agreement does not compromise Nigeria’s sovereignty or existing laws, including the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, 2023. Yakubu Maikyau emphasized that the NBA would have advised the government against signing the agreement if it contravened any Nigerian laws. He advised the government to continue public enlightenment on the agreement. “I wish to state that there is no provision in the SAMOA agreement which requires Nigeria to accept or in anyway recognize LGBTQ or gay rights, either as a pre-condition for a loan of $150 Billion USD or at all. “Instead, the agreement was expressly made subject to the local laws and the sovereignty of the contracting Nations. That is to say, the SAMOA agreement recognizes , for instance, Nigeria’s Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, 2023 and of course, the Supremacy of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended). “If this were not the case, the NBA would have since advised the Federal Government not to enter or engage in any form of partnership or agreement that has the ability to undermine the sovereignty of our nation in any way. “It is important for all stakeholders, who have had the opportunity of engaging with Government on this agreement prior to its execution, and others who have read and understood the objective of the agreement to endeavour to educate the public on its true content. “The negative narratives on this agreement are being pushed and propagated along very sensitive lines of our faith, culture and morality, thus the need for caution and proper education. “I, therefore, call on the Government to continue with the public enlightenment already being undertaken and for other stakeholders to join in doing so, in order to counter the negative perception being promoted on the agreement.”
Former All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman and currently, the Senator Representing Edo North in the 10th Senate, Adams Oshiomhole, has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately stop the importation and sales of the products that are being manufactured by companies that exited the country. Oshiomole, who faulted the idea that government has no business in business, said that if the multinational companies had considered the country unconducive for citing their companies, they should not be allowed to make Nigeria a dumping ground for their products. The Senator who was a guest speaker in Abuja at Professor Emeka Umerah’s Public Lecture, organised in solidarity with President Bola Tinubu administration, said that the only condition for such companies to continue to sell their products should be to return to the country. Senator Oshiomhole regretted that companies like Michelin, Dunlop, Toyota, among others, which exited the Nigerian space, still had their products flood the country’s markets. According to him, the companies have moved to build other country’s economy, by providing job opportunities for the citizens of such countries, and therefore should not be allowed to reap from Nigeria where they have not contributed to its GDP. “I am advocating that the National Assembly and the presidency should identify the industries that must be returned to the country. “And if such companies refuse to return, Nigeria should begin to ban companies that left the country from selling their products to Nigerians.” Oshiomhole berated the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for allegedly refusing to sell crude oil to Dangote Refinery who now imports from abroad. He deplored the privatisation of education, wondering why those who were beneficiaries of free education now champion privatisation of the sector. “How is it that those who were the beneficiaries of Awolowo’s basic education in the west and Sadauna’s education, even with allowances, in the north; I heard so much about Barewa College, it wasn’t private, they were high profile, first class institutions across the country.”
The Nigerian government has lifted importation of specific food items, including maize, husked brown rice, wheat and cowpeas and suspended duties, tariffs and taxes on them. According to a statement released by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, in a statement today, July 8, the lifting of importation of food commodities is part of a comprehensive plan to address food inflation in Nigeria over the next 180 days.
He said that the measure is aimed at providing relief and mitigate the effects of food price increases in the country. The minister said that during the period, the following decisions would be implemented: 1. A 150-Day Duty-Free Import Window for Food Commodities a. suspension of duties, tariffs and taxes for the importation of certain food commodities (through land and sea borders) b. These commodities include Maize, Husked Brown Rice, Wheat and Cowpeas c. Under this arrangement, imported food commodities will be subjected to a Recommended Retail Price (RRP). “(I am aware that some good citizens might be concerned about the quality of the would-be imported food commodities as it relates to the trending worries around the genetic composition of food) I am glad to reiterate that the Government’s position exemplifies standards that would not compromise the safety of the various food items for consumption.” 2. In addition to the importation by private sector, Federal Government will import 250,000MT of Wheat and 250,000MT of Maize. The imported food commodities in their semi processed state will target supplies to the small-scale processors and millers across the country. 3. Engage relevant stakeholders to set a Guaranteed Minimum Price (GMP) and mop up surplus assorted food commodities to restock the National Strategic Food Reserve. 4. Continuous ramp-up production for the 2024/2025 farming cycle. a. sustained support to smallholder farmers in the ongoing wet season farming through existing government initiatives. b. strengthen and accelerate Dry Season Farming across the country. c. embark on aggressive agricultural mechanization and development to reduce drudgery, drive down the cost of production and boost productivity. d. collaborate with Sub-National to identify irrigable lands and increase land under cultivation. e. work closely with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, to rehabilitate and maintain irrigation facilities under river basin authorities across the federation. f. development of a strategic engagement for youth and women across the federation for immediate greenhouse cultivation of horticultural crops such as tomatoes and pepper to increase production volume, stabilize prices, and address food shortages. g. fast-tracking ongoing engagements with the Nigerian Military to rapidly cultivate arable lands under the Defence Farms Scheme, while encouraging other Para-Military establishments to put secured available arable lands to cultivation. 5. The Renewed Hope National Livestock Transformation Implementation Committee will be inaugurated on Tuesday, 9th July 2024 with a view to developing and implementing policies that prioritize livestock development and ensure alignment with the National Livestock Transformation Plan. 6. Enhancement of Nutrition Security through: a. the promotion of production of fortified food commodities and b. offer necessary support to scale up the Home Garden Initiative by the Office of The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Over the next 14 days, in close collaboration with the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit (PFSCU) and the Economic Management Team (EMT), we will convene with the respective Agencies to finalize the implementation frameworks. We will ensure that information is publicly available to facilitate the participation of all relevant stakeholders across the country. The PFSCU will manage a dashboard for Mr. President, providing him with direct visibility into these interventions and ensuring accountability. The success of the measures aforementioned is contingent on cooperation and collaboration of all relevant MDAs and stakeholders. As our nation confronts a critical food security challenge, let me reiterate Mr. President’s unwavering commitment to attaining food security and ensuring that no Nigerian goes to bed hungry. To this end, I can assure all Nigerians, that my team and I, will swiftly and diligently actualize these crucial policies to ensure food security for everyone in the country in the immediate term as we also continue our strategies for long-term interventions to address the underlying causes and ensure sustainable and resilient food systems in the country.
The Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has attributed the return of scarcity of fuel and the resultant long queues in many filling stations to adverse weather conditions. A statement today, July 8 by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the NNPC Ltd. Olufemi Soneye said that the fuel queues seen in the FCT and some parts of the country, “were as a result of disruption of ship-to-ship (STS) transfer of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, between Mother Vessels and Daughter Vessels resulting from recent thunderstorm. “The adverse weather condition has also affected berthing at jetties, truck load-outs and transportation of products to filling stations, causing a disruption in station supply logistics.” The NNPC Ltd said that due to flammability of petroleum products and in compliance with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) regulations, it was impossible to load petrol during rainstorms and lightning. The statement emphasized that adherence to regulations is mandatory because any deviation could pose severe danger to the trucks, filling stations and human lives. It said that the development has been compounded by consequential flooding of truck routes which has constrained movement of PMS from the coastal corridors to the Federal Capital, Abuja. The NNPC Ltd assured however that it is working with relevant stakeholders to resolve the logistics challenges and restore seamless supply of petrol to affected areas. According to the statement, loading has already commenced in areas where the challenges have subsided, “and we are hoping the situation will continue to improve in the coming days and full normalcy would be restored.” The NNPC called on motorists to avoid panic buying and hoarding of petroleum products.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has alleged that the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello is planning to go on exile and has therefore requested INTERPOL to watch-list him in three North African countries: Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. According to EFCC sources, there is credible intelligence report about such plan and that various strategies are being considered to address the situation, including the possibility of storming the Kogi State Government House in Lokoja, where he is alleged to be hiding. Sources within the anti-graft agency hinted that the watch-listing has been activated in anticipation of Yahaya Bello’s expected court appearance on July 17th before the Federal High Court in Abuja. An EFCC source said: “ahead of the next hearing of the case, EFCC has activated many options, including taking concrete action to watch-list Bello in North Africa. We are aware of a botched exit to Morocco via Cameroon and are determined to prevent him from fleeing into exile.” The EFCC’s Executive Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, was recently in Tunisia, where he met with Heads of INTERPOL in North Africa to request Bello’s placement on a Red Alert. The request was accepted, and the watch listing took immediate effect. “We took this step because we suspect that Bello has been biding his time to avoid arraignment. We expect him to appear in court to prove his innocence. The EFCC must do its job to prevent setting a bad precedent.” Yahaya Bello is facing a 19-counts charge, including allegations of money laundering, breach of trust and misappropriation of public funds amounting to about N80.2 billion. Despite denying the allegations, he has repeatedly failed to appear before Justice Emeka Nwite on scheduled dates in June. Source: The Nation
Nigeria’s music star, Davido has narrated more details about his estranged ex girlfriend, Sophia; their daughter, Imade; Dele Momodu and Mrs. Momodu. The music star shared all the text and supporting images on his Instagram page this morning and deleted everything an hour later. In this piece, Davido explains why he has acted in certain ways and also sheds more light on details about Sophia Momodu. Read the lengthy (and detailed) piece below.
Birth of Imade Adeleke When the second trimester of Sophia’s pregnancy was closing, she tortuously announced to me that she was in the family way. My mind was bemused, and so was my soul confused. But I quickly realized that nothing more could be done to alter my status as a father-to-be. I knew that i was not ready to be a dad. Still, I adjusted myself to the realities of my new situation and the consequences of my past personal indiscretions. I made the determination that I was going to be a good dad. I also reasoned that my blunder is not enough pretext to make me a husband. I was just 21. And so I decided to be a responsible dad without being husband to the mother of my baby. I never was in love with Sophia neither was marriage ever in the offing. Without knowing for sure that I was the real dad of the baby, I entrusted Sophia to the services of a private hospital for both pre-natal and post-natal medical cares. An apartment at Lekki was leased for 2 years, and paid for by me. The burden of medical bills, feeding, transportation and sundry costs rested on my person. No family member of Sophia including Uncle Dele Momodu rose to help nor guide Sophia. I own my property at Lekki and had allowed Sophia to stay in the house because she claimed that she knew nobody in Lagos and that her father was deceased whilst her mother was resident in Abuja. For real, Sophia was a drifter without a dime, education nor career. My compassion, ignorance, naivety and poor judgment had combined to make me a victim to a much older lady with super cunning sense that was mixed with a vicious and diabolical nature. I stand accused but calmly accepted my responsibility for the sad misadventure that caused me to be a seat-mate with Sophia on a plane that was flying nowhere. All along, I have only been generous with Sophia without knowing for sure I was the father to the baby she was carrying. On May 14, 2015, Sophia delivered her baby named Imade. It was after Sophia had delivered the baby that DNA testing medically confirmed that I was indeed the biological father of our child named Imade. Once this status was obtained, Sophia started to apply maximum financial demands on me. I bought all the baby things and fully furnished her apartment. Sophia knew well how to spend money and yet contributed zero to the vast expenses that I incurred. None in her family contributed even a fake coin to the cost of having Imade. Uncle Dele Momodu, now the pompous moralist, never visited Sophia nor even delivered an ordinary greeting card to Imade nor to her mum. Throughout the many months that Sophia stayed at my house when she claimed she has no family in Lagos, Uncle Dele Momodu and his bossy wife never showed up at my house to say hello to either of us. When the going was good, Sophia had told me plenty things about her uncle Dele Momodu that I need not repeat here. And she never invited me to go with her to visit him and I don’t have the knowledge that she ever visited him throughout the time she stayed in my house. She always explained that a visit to Uncle Dele was needless and unnecessary. Uncle Dele Momodu never liked, and still does not like Sophia. He is now just grandstanding because Sophia had a baby for a fairly prominent family and famous Davido. The case of Mrs Momodu baffles me even more. Why did she not think it necessary to move to Sophia’s apartment to help her out and show her the tricks of motherhood when Imade was newly born. Not once did she visit Sophia and her baby until December 2015. She gave neither care, love nor financial support to Sophia. Now, at 7 months old, and a child with special medical needs, Mrs Momodu rushed to the Lagos Airport to make an awful botch of her standing as a mother: Mrs Momodu certainly not a good person. She put time and energy to prevent my daughter and I, the real father of Imade, from travelling aboard to keep an appointment with the American Hospital, Dubai. At the point of dying in November, 2015 Imade had been rushed to this medical facility in Dubai, where she received helpful and adequate treatment, and was duly returned to Nigeria, without any side excursions. What then suddenly propels the fear or dangerous love of Mr & Mrs Momodu for Sophia? I deeply sense this couple never loved Sophia nor her late father. They also resent her mum, and probably are jealous that Sophia ever became a mum herself, and thus, wish that Sophia’s daughter who is also my daughter, must needlessly perish. Where is the inherent value in a callous human ploy that directly intends to prevent a child from receiving necessary medical care aboard once the biological father, David Adeleke, the child’s grandfather and all my siblings who are uncles and aunties to Imade are booked to fly on this essential medical trip to which we have attached a restful family vacation? Sophia ain’t a member of our family, period. Surely, Sophia was not with Imade when she first visited Dubai, and yet Imade was promptly returned to Nigeria. And no one said Sophia cannot come to Dubai except that I declared that I don’t want the trip to seem like a spousal get-away. Sophia ain’t my wife and I refuse to let any action conspire to make us look like a couple. She seemed unable or unwilling to pay her way to Dubai. Also, her boastful Uncle, alas, refused to volunteer to pay her way to Dubai. I never suggested to an elder what he should take up as his personal responsibility if indeed he cared at all for Sophia as his robust involvement in our odd relationship wishes to establish. Mr Momodu never bought the ticket but wanted to enforce his cosine to join my family on this Dubai trip. Dangerous lights are furiously blinking red around my daughter, Sophia and my person. Uncle Dele Momodu and his wife are providers of the energy espousing the idea of a needless death to my daughter. I now say it loud and clear, should my daughter die, this strange couple are mainly responsible. Mr Dele Momodu should just leave me and my family alone! His daughter is not who had a baby for me, and he has been too much of an absentee uncle to Sophia to have any traction on the moral authority that commands the soul and heart of this matter. Sophia Never formally introduced him nor his wife to me, at any time. Why are they now crowding my space and that of my daughter?
Custody, Lifestyle and Imade’s Loss of Wellness In May, the same month Imade was born, Sophia settled in her fancy apartment for which I paid a hefty bill for a 2 year lease. Her baby was healthy. And she seemed happy. I would take care of all the financial needs of Imade and still pay Sophia a living allowance of 300,000 Naira plus utility bills. Within a matter of weeks, Sophia was missing and lusting for the streets of Lagos, especially the glitzy night life. She often left Imade home for clubbing, binge drinking and a life of debauchery and deviant living. She would sleep all day and party all night. When awake, she was addicted to the telephone and cannabis. She paid the baby no attention at all and seemed to despise motherhood and parenting. Imade was in her custody for 2 straight months, unchallenged and uninterrupted, until the baby took badly and severely ill in July. Imade cried, ceaselessly, for 48 hours. She was rushed to the hospital where her condition confounded medical experts. Several tests were conducted on her and later on the mother. Medical reports, herein attached (exhibit 1), proved that Sophia’s blood was polluted to the maximum level with cannabis and she had by the process of breast feeding infected her child with complicated medical conditions associated with the use of alcohol and especially cannabis. The trouble spot for Imade was her lungs. She had difficulty breathing largely because of the contaminated breast milk and the severity of the “Second Smoke” of marijuana inhaled by the poor child.
The Management of Media Trust Group, owners of Daily Trust, Trust TV and Trust Radio, has admitted that it might have been wrong in the interpretation of the Samoa Agreement, signed by Nigeria, the report that has raised dust in the country since June 26. Reacting to the threat of the Federal Government to go, not only court to challenge the report, but drag the newspaper company to the ombudsman of the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), the newspaper management said: “We have also acknowledged lapses in our reporting on this particular matter (that was) pointed out to us by professional colleagues, and we will review and take appropriate measures.” In a statement, the company’s Secretary/Legal Adviser, Maryam Aminu Bello, Esq. said: “Two ministers of government, and other sundry commentators have taken us to the cleaners over our story on the Samoa Agreement in particular, and some other reports published earlier. We have followed with attention what these government officials said, and left unsaid, and we will publish that in full, for the records… “As our editors understood it, the Samoa Agreement signed by Nigeria has expanded the definition of gender rights, from the traditional male-female, to a new norm, captured by the term LGBTQ (Lesbian; Bi-sexual, Gay, Transgender and Queer). That is the crux of the matter. “If the agreement does not aim at promoting such new orientation, widely accepted in Western countries, then we are wrong in our interpretation. We will readily apologise both to the government and to the public for crying wolf. “We expect that those qualified, by training and experience, to make such a judgement, will weigh into the matter and we will as usual, publish all sides in the discussion, including that of the government. “We wish to add that in this story, as in others over the last 26 years, the Daily Trust tried to be guided by public interest. “It is also important for us to clarify some of the insinuations by the information minister about other stories that Daily Trust had done. First, the statement that our newspaper had given “a banner headline to a baseless accusation that the Government was working on citing foreign military bases in the country. “Nothing could be further from the truth. We only reported in the Daily Trust of Sunday, 5th May, 2024, details of an open letter by six scholars and activists urging the president and the National Assembly to reject any bid to cite United States of America and French military bases within Nigeria. “Also, the minister said “Daily Trust concocted and popularised a lie that the Federal Government had renamed the Murtala Muhammed Expressway in Abuja to Wole Soyinka Way. “We did publish two opinion articles in Daily Trust of Wednesday and Saturday, June 12 and 15, 2024, in which the opinion writers raised concerns over alleged renaming of the Murtala Muhammed Way, Abuja, after Wole Soyinka. “We recall that the information minister’s press statement on that matter, which was issued on the 17th of June, 2024, with the headline “Abuja’s Murtala Muhammed Way NOT Renamed after Soyinka-FG”, was reported generously in our online and offline platforms. “We wish to reiterate that we are an impartial media outlet. Since 1998, we have operated under six different governments, with the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Administration being the seventh. Throughout this period, we have consistently demonstrated a high level of impartiality in our reportage.” The Nigeria’s minister of information and national orientation, Mohammed Idris, had, at a media briefing in Abuja, yesterday, July 6, described the report on the agreement as “baseless and sensational.” He accused Daily Trust of attempting to set the country on fire on the issue that was not as severe as such made other governments clamped down on the media. “On the part of the Government, we continue on the honourable path of civility by restraining ourselves from taking self-help or draconian measures. “While past governments clamped down on the media for infractions much lower than this, we are however toeing the path of civility and the rule of law.” “The Federal Government is lodging a formal complaint to the NPAN Ombudsman on this irresponsible reporting. In addition, the Federal Government will use every lawful means to seek redress in the court of law,” the minister had said.
