The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, has denied calling for military intervention in the country, saying that he was quoted out of context.
Ekweremadu made the denial today, Saturday at the Diepreye Alaimieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall, Onopa, Yenagoa, when Governor Seriake Dickson hosted him and executive members of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (Africa Region) to a dinner.
The deputy Senate President, who said that his comments on the floor of the Senate were misconstrued, insisted that he would never make derogatory statements against the Nigerian military, which according to him, remains one of the best fighting forces on the continent.
He said that statements made by lawmakers in the course of their duty should be situated within the proper context before any form of reaction.
Ekweremadu said that parliamentarians had a duty to continue to defend democracy in the country, arguing that the difference between a democracy and a dictatorship is the parliament, which should, ordinarily, provide direction for the sustenance of democracy.
He added that his remarks on the floor of the Senate were to caution his colleagues to avoid the mistakes of the past which he said led to the abrupt end of the First Republic. [myad]
Nigerians woke up yet again to another spine-chilling of killings by suspected Fulani herdsmen, in Benue State as usual. This time, the mayhem was visited on the people of Omusu village in Okpokwu Local Government Area of the state. In a moment, over 24 human beings were hacked to death by armed herdsmen. The only justification for this crime was “theft” of their animals. Governor Samuel Ortom has again scheduled another mass burial. This is notwithstanding the fact that the people of the state are still mourning 73 of their loved ones earlier given a mass burial on the 11th of January this year. Disturbing as the news may be, to an average Nigerian, it is not breaking news because the level of insecurity in this country has assumed such an alarming dimension that killing no longer makes news. It is the number of people killed, and the subsequent rise in the death toll that sometimes make news. There is hardly any passing day in Nigeria without killings going on in one part of the country or the other, the highest casualties resulting from suspected armed Fulani herdsmen invading farming communities and killing anyone in sight, and the murderous activities of Boko Haram insurgents. The marauding Fulani herdsmen, who have been graded as the fourth most vicious terror organization in the world (by Global Terrorism Index), have continued to wreak havoc on innocent Nigerians, Benue being the worst hit. An average Benue farmer, as it stands, is living at the mercy of these armed herdsmen. There are nagging posers begging for answers. First, what is the rationale behind the launching of exercise Ayem a kpatuma (Cat Race) in Benue and the neighboring states? Why did the suspected herdsmen muster the courage to still engage in such wholesale massacre right while there is heavy presence of armed military men in the state, without any arrest whatsoever? Again, is there any political will or sincerity of purpose on the side of the federal government in maintaining security in certain parts of this country? Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state has called on the federal government to stop paying lip service to issues of security. Now that President Muhammad Buhari has finally bowed to pressure, after heavy criticisms, to at least visit the state, he would be confronted with many questions, and the salient issue of the real position of Benue state in the scheme of affairs of his government. The many years of genocide, lack of federal government presence, and the gruesome negligence by the Buhari- led administration has, no doubt, impacted negatively on the sense of belonging of the government and people of the state who voted massively to bring him to power in 2015. His belated visit to the state is viewed in many quarters as merely political, especially coming at the heels of his rumoured second term bid in office. Where was he when over 500 people in Agatu were massacred in 2016 by the same suspected Fulani herdsmen? Even thereafter, killings have continued unabated in the state without any effort from his administration to stem the tide, prompting the state House of Assembly to enact the open grazing prohibition law in 2017. It is important to note that security of lives and property is the social contract between the government and the people. If that contract is breached, then the government has failed in its responsibility. But first, there must be political will on the side of government to succeed in this task. President Buhari had said in Jalingo when he visited Taraba state on Monday, 5th of March, that “the number of people killed in Taraba are more than those killed in Benue and Zamfara combined.” Just as this was being said, 24 people in Okpokwu and 5 others in Guma areas of Benue State were sent to their early graves. One wonders if the number contest, and not the security of these lives, was necessary. Or was that a deliberate effort by the killers to level up with the Taraba casualties? Most disappointing is the fact that such needless statistics is coming from the number one citizen of this country. How long will this genocide continue? Of what value is the life of an average Nigerian? Benue is renowned for crop production, hence the slogan “food basket of the nation “. But recently, farming has become a nightmare in some parts of the state. Farmers are now scared of being killed by these armed herdsmen who graze their cows indiscriminately on farms and threaten or kill anyone in sight. Worse still, those saddled with providing security and defences of citizens have allegedly taken sides with the marauding herdsmen. The Inspector – General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris had earlier on insisted that the anti-open grazing law in the state be suspended as the only panacea to the killings. The Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali also shared in this sentiment, claiming that the cattle routes and grazing areas gazetted for Fulani herdsmen by the British (colonial) administration have been encroached upon by the farmers in Benue, hence the persistent pogroms. Their biased position has helped to embolden the Fulani herdsmen. But what a country! These views, howsoever analyzed, tactically align with those of the leadership of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, who had, at the inception of the law, threatened to mobilize their men to attack and rubbish such steps. Calls by Benue state governor and other well meaning Nigerians for their arrest by the relevant security agencies fell on deaf ears. They made proof their threat on the New Year day in Guma and Logo LGAs of the state, killing 73 people. Yet, on the 13th of January, Alhaji Hussaini Yusuf Bosso, the vice president of the group warned that the nation should “expect more bloodshed in Benue”. His threats were published in the Sun newspaper same day. Since then, over 90 more people, including some police officers drafted to these troubled areas, have been killed. The leadership of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore,a Fulani umbrella socio-cultural group, has in many respects, claimed responsibility for the genocide in Benue, alleging that the open grazing prohibition law is not in their favour. If those in authority who choose to defend the killers’ interest, prefer to call them foreigners, then it is only in Nigeria that ” foreigners ” can pass orders to the citizens not to enact laws for the well being of their people. The claim for grazing areas and cattle routes has invariably led to the pogroms witnessed in Nigeria for close to a decade now. These killings have had a wide geographical spread, cutting across virtually all the six geopolitical zones in the country, a move many suspect, is a Fulani expansionist agenda. Otherwise, if the opinion of the IGP, the Minister of Defense and the Fulani cattle rearers with respect to encroachment on grazing areas is anything to go by, then the entire country called Nigeria is a cattle route and a grazing reserve. It is therefore foolhardy and a brazen fallacy for anyone to claim that the killer herdsmen are simply foreigners, with the kind of attention the federal government has given to their trade, including the subtle design to establish cattle colonies for them in every state of the federation .Howbeit, the unpopular decision was roundly rejected by majority of the state governors, apart from Kogi state and others in the core north.
The Benue people know who their killers are. They are the Fulani herdsmen. Their grandstanding and sheer arrogance are testimonies to this fact. What is left is for President Buhari to stop paying lip service to the all-important issue of security, and put a stop to these killings, or leave the peace loving people of Benue with no choice than to take their destiny in their hands and defend themselves. Enough of this killing!

The Queen of England and Head of the Commonwealth of Nations, Queen Elizabeth, has said that diversity amongst the 53 member states of the body should be seen as a cause for celebration rather than division.
The Queen said: “we all have reason to give thanks for the numerous ways in which our lives are enriched when we learn from others. Through exchanging ideas, and seeing life from other perspectives, we grow in understanding and work more collaboratively towards a common future.
“There is a very special value in the insights we gain through the Commonwealth connection; shared inheritances help us overcome difference so that diversity is a cause for celebration rather than division.”
The Queen’s message to the 53 Commonwealth member nations will feature in a service, staged at Westminster Abbey tomorrow, Monday, to mark Commonwealth Day. Commonwealth of Nations (formerly the British Commonwealth), is an intergovernmental organization of 53 member states that are mostly former territories of the British Empire.
The Queen’s message went on: “we shall see this in action at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting which takes place in the United Kingdom next month, bringing together young people, business and civil society from across the Commonwealth.
“These gatherings are themselves fine examples of how consensus and commitment can help to create a future that is fairer, more secure, more prosperous and sustainable. Having enjoyed the warm hospitality of so many Commonwealth countries over the years, I look forward to the pleasure of welcoming the leaders of our family of 53 nations to my homes in London and Windsor.
“Sport also contributes to building peace and development. The excitement and positive potential of friendly rivalry will be on display next month as we enjoy the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Australia. Contributing to the success of the Games, alongside athletes and officials, will be thousands of volunteers.
“Voluntary effort, by people working as individuals, in groups or through larger associations, is so often what shapes the Commonwealth and all our communities. By pledging to serve the common good in new ways, we can ensure that the Commonwealth continues to grow in scope and stature, to have an even greater impact on people’s lives, today and for future generations.” [myad]
Self-styled Area fada and punk king, Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, a.k.a, Charly boy, has apologize to the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki over his false statement that Saraki was recently attacked by a mob in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
Charly boy had, through some tweets, said that Saraki was attacked merely by seeing a handful of photographs in which Saraki was either dusting up his dirty trousers or showing the people around him some dirty pebbles.
The Area fada had misinterpreted the photos to be those of a mob attack against the person of the Senate President.
Twitter users, including Saraki’s Head of New Media, Olu Onemola, drew Charly boy’s attention to the fact that the photos were those of the Senate President’s 2012 visit to Ogoniland in Rivers State, rather than photos of an attack by some mob in Kwara State. [myad]
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has asked the Buhari-led Federal Government to look beyond the ordinary causes of the lingering clashes between herdsmen and local farmers in parts of the country if permanent solution should be found.
The former Nigerian leader, who spoke today, Saturday when he paid solidarity visit to Benue State to condole with the Governor Samuel Ortom and people of the state over the incessant attacks and killings, remarked: “Mr. Governor, please accept my condolence. This (crisis), to me, goes beyond what is on the surface and we need to find out what is at the bottom of it.
“That is the responsibilities of leaders. They must leave no stone unturned to find what the root cause of this is and put a stop to it.”
Obasanjo, who described the incessant killings as ‘senseless,’ said the Federal Government must take proactive steps or risk the consequences of burying innocent victims like those killed in the New Years’ attacks in Benue State.
He insisted that leaders across the board must work to unravel the mystery behind the killings to arrive at a safe and lasting solution.
“We cannot talk of a free country, a secured country, a country where we will want development to take place, a country where we will want to invite investors and we are suffering this type of senselessness. I do hope that there will be an end to this.” [myad]
“With the number of decampees I received into our great party today in Katsina, we can say without fear that PDP is dead and buried and can’t recapture Nigeria again come 2019.
“A party where virtually all their bigwigs, Senator Ibrahim Ida and host of others had deserted because they have seen the light and are now in the fold of APC; so you can see that PDP is weak even in Katsina state.”
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie Oyegun spoke today, Saturday at a grand rally and reception of over 300,000 decampees from other political parties into APC, said PDP. They include Senator Ibrahim Muhammad Ida, former PDP Senator representing Katsina central, Hon. Ya’u Umar Gwojo Gwojo, two terms Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon. Bature Umar Masari, 2015 PDP Campaign Director General, Dr. Yusha’u Armiya’u.
Chief Oyegun said: “I have been receiving lots of decampees in other states of the federation but the ones I received today are the best considering their reputations”.
The APC chairman said that the federal government, under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, has generated about 7000 MWs of electricity within three years, stressing that the president had repositioned the power sector and agriculture via meaningful projects.
“When we came on board we meet 3000 MWs of electricity, but the president has increased it to 7000 MWs within a shortest period of time. On agriculture, Buhari has made the sector almost self-sufficient for everyone”.
Earlier in a welcome address at the occasion, the state Governor, Aminu Bello Masari, said that PDP had been completely decimated and have no capacity to make any impact in the governorship and Presidential elections, let alone winning them. [myad]
Member of the House of Representatives, Hon Muhammed Kabiru Ajanah, representing Adavi and Okehi federal constituency in Kogi State, has said that what the ‘sleeping industrial giant;’Ajaokuta Steel Company needs to spring to life is more of a political will than money.
Nasiru Ajanah, who spoke today, Saturday, during the Annual Conference organized by Ebira Youth Progressive Initiative in Abuja, the nation’s federal capital explained that all the ground works have been completed for the steel company to return to full operation.
He asked the people from the steel city and its environs tp embark on serious prayer for President Muhamadu Buhari to be endowed with such political will to make the steel company to resume full operation.
Representative Ajanah said that the lawmakers from the area in which the steel company is located have been doing their best to ensure that it resumes full operation so that youths would have ample opportunities of being massively employed.
He said that apart from Ajaokuta, lawmakers from the Kogi Central senatorial district are working on the possibility of developing Osara Dam to the point of turning it into what he called ‘tourism centre.’
“We want a situation where there will eventually be Osara Fishing and Cultural carnival like Argungu carnival in Sokoto,” Hon Ajanah remarks.
Speaking at the occasion, the founder of Danjuma Eye Foundation (DEF), Prince Danjuma Abdulmalik Attah lamented the lack of leadership direction in Ebira land, stressing that the socio political challenges the land is facing now is due to leadership deficit.
He argued that the solution cannot come from the youth who themselves, have been part of it, by being available to be used by the politicians and other leaders that are divided along clannish lines.
This was even as the chairman of the occasion and Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Maitama Hospital in FCT, Dr. Abdullahi Jimoh Anate called on the Youths to redirect their energies towards positive development and unity of their societies, away from the wishes of divided political leaders.
Dr. Anate pledged to meaningfully assist youths that are ready to embark on positive projects and programme that would promote the unity and development of Ebira land.
The guest speaker at the event, Dr. Zubairu Ochi Abdulrahman, dwelt on the good qualities of youths and the benefits which such qualities could bring to the society if they are properly utilized. [myad]
At least 125 people, including a dozen high school kids in Milwaukee, have been infected with HIV, syphilis, or both in one of the biggest outbreaks ever reported in the city.
According to Milwaukee’s Journal Sentinel, which broke the story on Tuesday, the outbreak has been identified as a “cluster,” meaning a large number of people have become infected in a particular time and place.
“This is an epidemic people are not talking about enough, and it leads to people taking unnecessary risks,” public health consultant, Melissa Ugland told the Journal Sentinel.
Those involved may have all connected with one another during a 12-month period, said Ugland, who could not be reached for comment by Yahoo Lifestyle. Many of the infected are men, 45 percent of which are HIV-positive, according to Ugland and other health care advocates.
Representatives from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the Milwaukee Health Department, and Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) did not return Yahoo Lifestyle’s request for comment.
Less than 10 percent of those infected attend MPS, though the numbers could rise. The district sent a statement to the Journal Sentinel which read: “Because schools have a significant number of students in the 15-18 age group, we are working with the Milwaukee Health Department, in a collaborative and preventive effort, to share information with young people in middle schools and high schools to keep them healthy and to protect their health.”
The news outlet also reports that the cluster is being called a “sentinel event” due to the number of youth infected with HIV and because three area babies were born with syphilis in 2016.
“It’s a really big deal,” Ugland told Journal Sentinel.
The National Coalition of STD Directors, which called the Milwaukee case a “crisis,” published a statement Friday calling out lawmakers.
“This is unacceptable,” wrote executive director David C. Harvey: “Those of us working in the field know that STD prevention works when it’s funded. Investing just 10 cents per person per year in syphilis prevention could cut the number of syphilis cases by almost a third.
“Congress must recognise that these epidemics will continue to rage if federal investment does not rise to meet the ever-rising tide of STD rates, and we call on Congress to increase federal funding for STD prevention at CDC.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease that during the first two stages causes painless genital sores, swollen lymph nodes, and fever. The final stage involves no symptoms but can damage the heart and brain, as well as other major organs. Mothers may also pass syphilis to their unborn children during pregnancy and experience complications such as stillbirth. Syphilis is treated with antibiotics.
HIV, which stands for human immunodeficiency virus, is an autoimmune disease contracted through unsafe sex or sex with multiple partners. The virus, for which there is no cure, destroys white blood cells called T-helper cells, and spreads throughout the body, presenting itself with a variety of symptoms, including fever, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, and night sweats. The late stage of HIV is AIDS, which greatly weakens the immune system and the body’s ability to fight other infections.
“HIV and syphilis spread efficiently within the first few months, often with the person experiencing nonspecific symptoms or those that mimic the flu,” Jeffrey Klausner, MD, a professor of medicine and public health at the University of California, Los Angeles, tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “And because doctors rarely ask questions about patients’ sexual activity — either because they’re embarrassed or untrained — the diagnosis could be missed.
“We’ve seen a massive erosion in public health resources due to the 2008 recession. Many city clinics were shut down and never refinanced.”
Klausner says syphilis is treatable if done so timely, and that “HIV is manageable and treatable — not the death sentence it was 20 years ago.”
An Abuja Federal High Court has granted an application by Anti-Corruption and Integrity Forum (ACIF) seeking the arrest of Anambra senator, Andy Uba for alleged certificate forgery.
The court approved an order seeking to compel the attorney general of the federation and the inspector general of police to arrest and prosecute Senator Uba over allegation of certificate forgery.
Justice Binta Nyako, who delivered the ruling also granted the exparte application before the court filed by the civil society organisation through its lawyer, Amobi Nzelu.
The organization said it is important for the court to compel the AGF, IGP to exercise its constitutional powers under S174(1) of the 1999 constitution by commencing the proceedings against Uba.
In an affidavit in support of the motion on notice, deposed to, by one Ikechukwu Godswill, the deponent said that on April 24, 2017, the law firm of Anthony Agbolahor wrote a letter to the IGP on behalf of Victor Uwajeh, regarding the alleged fake West African Examination Council Certificate of the Senator.
Godswill said that based on the directive, the office of the DIG, wrote a letter to the registrar of WAEC to confirm the authenticity of the certificate.
“That the West African Examination Council responded to the said letter wherein it stated clearly that the certificate was not issued from their office. The said response from West African examination Council is attached and marked exhibit D.
“That based on the said response from the Registrar of the West African Examination Council, the deputy inspector general of police Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (CIID) through the office of the Senate President, requesting senator Emmanuel Nnammdi Ubah a.k.a Andy Ubah to see him for interview on the 31th of August 2017. The said letter is attached and marked exhibit E.
“That the said interview never held due to the intervening circumstances arising from the letter written by the 1st respondent to the Deputy Inspector General of Police force criminal intelligence and investigating department on the matter,” the affidavit said.”
The exhibits attached to the application include an alleged forged WAEC certificate, letter of the police to WAEC to confirm the authenticity of the social certificate with number SC544753 linked to examination number: 05465089 and response from WAEC stating that the certificate was not issued by them.
