The new Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Otumba Gani Adams has agreed to shed off his activist regalia and adorn the toga of statesman in view of his new status.

Otumba Gani Adams, who spoke today, Saturday, at his installation as the 15th Aare Onakakanfo at Durbar Stadium, Oyo by the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, said that though with an activist background, it is now clear that he had to do more as a bridge builder with the new responsibility.

“In as much as the focus of my struggle has changed over the years from the heady days of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) to the spread of our culture through the formation of the Oodua Progressive Union (OPU), which is now in 79 countries, the Olokun Festival Foundation, Gani Adams Foundation and many others, this new responsibility, despite my age, has unwittingly forced the stature of a statesman on me.”

The Aare Onakakanfo promised to live up to that calling, stressing that he would work with the traditional rulers, grassroots leaders and all other stakeholders, no matter the differences of the past, for the unity, progress and advancement of Yorubaland and Nigeria.

He assured that with him on the stride, the office of the Aare Ona Kakanfo will project the Yoruba culture and tradition by promoting and sustaining its identity globally, adding that the office will ensure unity of all Yoruba sons and daughters all over the world.

“Also, of strategic importance to me is research and documentary to sustain the ideals of our founding fathers. To ensure the continuation of the leadership role the Yoruba is known for educationally, I will give scholarships to our sons and daughters because education is light and power.

“Also, I will collaborate with security agencies and stakeholders to ensure that Yorubaland is effectively secured through our various organizations.

“I want to assure this August gathering that given the fact that the Oodua Progressives Union (OPU), which I am also the Convener, is now established in 79 countries, I will use this Union and other pan-Yoruba groups abroad to invite our sons and daughters with exceptional abilities, who have distinguished themselves in various fields, to come home and help in our quest to ensuring that our country takes its rightful place in the comity of nations.”[muad]

The Nigerian Presidency has disowned a message on a fake Twitter handle purportedly belonging to President Muhammadu Buhari in which the President was said to have declared support for the Herdsmen killing farmers.
The message, the Presidency said, in a statement by the Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, quoted President Buhari as justifying herdsmen attacks on farmers saying they were only defending themselves.
Femi Adesina cursed those behind the concocted message, adding that they “are also enemies of God and man, who have no place in a decent society.”
Adesina described the message as spurious which he said “evil doers and enemies of our country” have again embarked upon, “seeking ways to further advance their pernicious acts. “The message is denounced in its entirety, and President Buhari stands by his earlier condemnation of the killings in Benue and other parts of the country as dastardly and unacceptable before God and man.
“The President stands by his earlier directives that all those behind wanton killings in any part of the country must be brought to book.”

Man Posts Application For Wife On Facebook, Lady Applies, They Marry 7 Days Later

Facebook marriage

It was a day before New Year’s Eve, and Nigerian furniture maker Chidimma Amedu was determined to find a wife. He turned to Facebook and posted a message requesting for applications from interested women.

He wrote: “(I) am of age to and I am ready to say I do and I am wasting no time. Send in your applications. The most qualified will be married on January 6, 2018. Application closes 12 midnight, December 31 2017.

“I am serious about this… and don’t say you did not see it on time. Goodluck.”

Sophy Ijeoma was at a friend’s wedding where she was maid of honor when the message caught her eye and she responded with a playful message, saying: “Am interested, just DM me…lols.”

Amedu sent her a private message and love blossomed via Facebook messenger. One week later, they were married.

Ijeoma, a makeup artist, said she “jokingly replied.” “I never knew he was serious about the post,” she added.

But Amedu, who felt he was “of age” to get married, was very serious.

He said: “I had given myself a timeline and I didn’t want to wait anymore.”

The couple had been friends on Facebook for a year, but had little interaction.

Amedu said: “She likes and comments on my posts from time to time. I was surprised that she replied the message and so it piqued my interest and I immediately messaged her.”

Their first date was at a mall in her hometown Enugu in southeastern Nigeria. Amedu took one look at her and said, “You’re beautiful,” Ijeoma recalls.

Romance blossomed quickly and two days after their first meeting Amedu proposed and she said yes.

She said his unusual approach to finding love was what captivated her. “I fell in love with him, especially for his courage.”

The pair wasted no time in making wedding plans and meeting family members, who were hugely supportive of the match made on Facebook.

The entire wedding was planned in four days, but not before they took a test to find out if they were medically compatible to have children together.

Nigeria has a high incidence of sickle cell anemia and couples are advised to check their genotypes match to avoid having babies with the illness.

Some Nigerian churches ask couples to disclose their genotype and HIV status before they agree to wed them.

On January 6 2018, the couple got married in a traditional Igbo ceremony.

Chidimma said, “At first, her family thought I was not serious but I proved to them that I was.”

The pair say they are determined to prove those who say they rushed into marriage wrong.

“I am happy that I married him. He is my kind of man,” Ijeoma said. [myad]

We’ll Not Surrender Our Ancestral Land For Cattle Colony – Senator Jonah Jang

Senator Jonah Jang

“My people are against cattle colonies; they have said that they would not relinquish their ancestral lands for the purpose of grazing reserves or colonies.”

This is the position of Senator Jonah Jang, who represents Plateau North in the Senate on the proposed cattle colony whose modalities have not yet been worked out by the Federal Government.

In a statement by Clinton Garuba, his media consultant, Jang, who was once the governor of Plateau State, stressed that people of his constituency are opposed to the creation of cattle colonies.

The Senator lamented the attacks on his people by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen over the years, adding that victims of such attacks are “not ready to accept the confiscation of their land by government.

“Cattle colonies are detrimental to the people and will not be accepted. The Plateau government is aware of this.

“We have already suffered too much loss in the hands of attackers believed to be herdsmen; creating colonies for them will only worsen the situation.

“The Plateau people are peaceful and have always rejected any policy that could undermine that peace.

Jang called on the federal and state governments to organize a meeting of stakeholders to seek a lasting solution to the incessant herdsmen/farmers clashes, adding there is the need for policies that would be fair and acceptable to all concerned.

No Going Back On Sacked Teachers, Kaduna Governor Vows

Nasiru Ahmed El Rufai
Nasiru Ahmed El Rufai

Governor Nasir Ahmed el-Rufai of Kaduna has made it clear that he would not reverse the sacking of 21,780 teachers irrespective of pressure from any quarter.
The teachers were sacked in November last year after they failed primary four examination.
“There is nothing to step back on. It is a well thought out position. We took one and half years before we made the decision and we will not change it.”
The governor told news men at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, today, Friday after observing Jum’at (Friday) prayer along with President Muhammadu Buhari that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) whose leadership protested the sack yesterday in the state had the right to express themselves the way they feel.
“For me, the right to protest is guaranteed in the constitution providing you don’t go violent and you don’t violate any laws.”
Governor el-Rufai said that in line with the public service rule, the state government will pay three months severance pay to the sacked teachers.
He said that some incentives have also been provided for those that are retiring to go through the retirement training. “Those that are interested in farming, we have the reserve land available and for those that want to go into trade, we have micro credit to support them but they are not suitable as teachers.
“They can do other things and the government will do other things to support them.”
He denied instructing police to stop workers from marching to government house during the protest in the state yesterday, saying that he was not even in Kaduna.
He believed that the concerns of the police was because of the precarious situation in the country particularly in Kaduna which made it unsuitable to have such protest.
“And the last time they did such a thing, they attacked the State House of Assembly; a legislator for which they have filed criminal charges. So this is the concern, the concern is break down of law and order and not protest or strike. They are free to do so but it will not change our position.”
