24 Professors Listen To Osinbajo’s Preaching On Importance Of Merit And Humanities, At A Dinner

Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo
Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo

No fewer than 24 egg-heads were at a dinner with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo last night, Thursday, where he delivered a lecture that concentrated on the virtue of merit and humanities.
Vice President Osinbajo, himself a Professor, kick-started his lecture by saying: “Permit me to reflect briefly this evening on two strands of thought with which I have been occupied for a while, but which the events of today brought to the fore: The importance of merit, and the centrality of the humanities.”
The roll-call of the egg-heads in attendance, all of who are holders of the Nigeria National Order Merit (NNOM) are:
1. Professor E. M Essien
2. Professor (Mrs.) Paulina K. Makinwa-Adebusoye
3. Professor Tanure Ojaide
4. Professor A. O. Anya
5. Professor B. O. Nnaji
6. Professor Hilary Inyang Inyang
7. Professor E. J. Alagoa
8. Professor Ayo Bamgbose
9. Professor J. P. Clark
10. Professor A. O. E. Animalu
11. Professor P. O. Ebigbo
12. Professor Oyewale Tomori
13. Professor A. F. Oluwole
14. Professor B. A. Osofisan
15. Professor Oladipo Adamolekun
16. Professor C. E. Nnolim
17. Professor A. O. Esogbue
18. Professor U. B. Ahmed
19. Professor T. O. Odugbemi
20. Professor Idris Mohammed
21. Professor J. K. Olupona
22. Eze (Professor) V. C. Ike
23. Professor L. A. Banjo
24. Professor S. C. Ohaegbulam
According to the Vice President, the greatness, fame and glory of a nation largely rely on the hard work, creativity and service of its best talents.
“And this is the best case that can be made for the promotion of a culture of merit and for policies that as a rule prefer the best and then make provision for quotas for the disadvantaged by reason of geography, gender or other factors.
“The best in our midst in their individual fields, in sports, science, technology, the professions, academia, the arts, and entertainment are given to societies to provide services and insights that only they can. In them lie the keys to the leaps from one level of knowledge to another.”
Professor Osinbajo swore that any society that favours exigencies of any kind over merit has chosen to function at its sub-optimal level and greatness must, by the force of principle, elude it.
He stressed that high attainment, whether it be for individuals or nations, is a function of the priority given to merit, “which brings me to the other issue, the growing tension amongst policymakers, some who take the position that our emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math should mean discouraging the humanities and arts.
“Indeed, at a recent meeting of policymakers, a distinguished academic argued that private universities should not be registered to offer courses in the humanities and arts, but to focus on STEM. While it is sometimes easier to see the contributions of scientists to development, it may require deeper introspection to recognize the arts as a rampart of the human spirit, and the bridgehead to meaning and understanding that it truly is.
“Understanding, said Drew Faust, derives from both what is measurable and what is unmeasurable – it is enhanced by scientific insights and mathematical proofs, by philosophical puzzles, and by literature and art that transform the heart as well as the mind.”
Osinbajo insisted that education must encompass all of these because it seeks to fashion, not just employees and employers, but human beings who can help create a better future for themselves and for the world.
Professor Osinbajo rationalised that science and technology go farther on the wings of the refined thinking, imagination, visioning and disciplined, introspection of the humanities, adding: “we are on the threshold of turning around our economy and polity irreversibly.
“For me, the incredible revelation of the past few years is the realization that if we can deal with corruption and abuse of power we would have resolved the most malignant our problems. There is no way that a nation whose resources are looted by its custodians can succeed.”
He stressed that as the government of Muhammadu Buhari is tackling the issue of corruption, it would continue to follow the process, saying: “the truth is that the easiest part is the arrest and apprehension of persons who have committed crime against the state.
“The more difficult part of it is in reforming those institutions that have been corrupted by years and years of neglect and the promotion of impunity. It is those institutions that we must strengthen and it is those institutions that are important in being able to carry forward all of the reforms that we are putting in place, that is by far a more difficult exercise.”
He assured Nigerians that President Buhari is completely committed and determined in ensuring that this country’s fortunes are turned around irreversibly.
“In conversations with him, he has said that it all that he has devoted the rest of his life in doing, and I am completely convinced that God spearing his life, we will see this turn around.”[myad]

I Won’t Be Intimidated, Finance Minister Vows, As Controversies Rage Over Suspension Of Gwarzo, SEC Boss

Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun
Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun

Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun has vowed that she would not be intimidated by the controversies trailing the suspension of the Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Mr. Mounir Gwarzo.
In a statement today, Friday, by her Media Adviser, Oluyinka Akntunde, the minister insisted that the decision to suspend Gwarzo was in order.
The statement states thus: “The attention of the Honourable Minister of Finance has been drawn to some misleading and mischievous media reports regarding the suspension of the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Mr. Mounir H. Gwarzo.
“Mr. Gwarzo has alleged that his suspension was due to “his refusal to stop the forensic audit of Oando Plc.
“The Minister would not have ordinarily responded in view of her responsibility for the approval of the Constitution and Terms of Reference for the Administrative Panel of Inquiry into the allegations against Mr. Gwarzo. However, given the degree of speculations and the potential impact on the capital market, there is a need for the Minister to set the record straight as follows:
“The integrity of the capital market is vital to the growth of the Nigerian economy and must be managed in an orderly and transparent manner to ensure investors’ confidence. Its leadership must maintain and be seen to maintain the highest standards of integrity.
“That the original decision taken by SEC on October 20, 2017 to suspend the shares of Oando Plc and conduct a forensic audit, was approved and endorsed by the Federal Ministry of Finance. The SEC team, led by Mr. Mounir presented adequate evidence to the Minister of Finance and her team, that Oando Plc had a clear case to answer with regard to infractions of the ISA.
“No contrary evidence has been presented and thus, the investigative work on Oando and all other ongoing investigations being undertaken by SEC in the discharge of its statutory functions have continued. Indeed, our information is that the forensic auditors have resumed at Oando.
“For the avoidance of doubt, there was no directive whatsoever to discontinue investigation into Oando and this was reiterated to the current SEC leadership at the formal handover meeting. The fact that the investigation has continued further corroborates that this is the Minister’s position.
“The Federal Ministry of Finance would like to place on record that Gwarzo’s suspension is in line with the Public Service Rules (PSRs), to allow for an unhindered investigation of serious allegations of financial impropriety against him. Some of the allegations with documented evidence include the awards of contracts to companies related to him and members of his family.
“It should be noted that Gwarzo was queried by the Ministry on 3rd November and he responded on 7th November,2017. His response to the query was deemed unsatisfactory and further investigation was ordered.
“Based on the evidence from that further work and creditable reports that documents were being unlawfully removed from SEC, as well as consultations with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the decision was taken to suspend Mr. Gwarzo.
“At the meeting on Monday, 27th November 27, Mr. Gwarzo was asked to clarify some of his responses to the query issued, which were not consistent with documentary evidence. From that interaction, Mr. Gwarzo became aware of the strong likelihood of his suspension. It was thereafter that Mr. Gwarzo prepared the memo, which has been circulated in the media.
“It is instructive to note that Mr. Gwarzo personally delivered the memo using SEC staff seconded to the office of the Minister, in breach of normal procedures for the receipt of mail.
“The copy of the memo in the possession of the Minister was delivered with a message that any action against Mr. Gwarzo would result in same being leaked to the press. It was this threat of blackmail that strengthened the resolve of the Minister to suspend Mr. Gwarzo and allow the Administrative Panel of Inquiry to proceed with its probe.
“The Minister restates that the insinuation of an instruction to discontinue with the Oando case is false and this can be corroborated by the other parties at that meeting and by subsequent events.”[myad]

Judicial Council Recommends 2 Judges For Compulsory Retirement, Warns 2 Others

nigerian judgesThe National Judicial Council (NJC), has recommended the compulsory retirement of Justice A. F. A. Ademola and Justice O. O. Tokode from the services of the Federal High Court for misconduct.
The Council, under the Chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, also gave serious warning to two other judges.
At its 84th Meeting which was held yesterday, Wednesday, Justice A. F. A. Ademola who had forwarded his notice of retirement on 10th October, 2017 to the Council against 9th April, 2018, when he will attain the mandatory retirement age of 65 years was recommended for compulsory retirement from office to President Muhammadu Buhari, pursuant to the findings by the Council on the allegation contained in the petition written against him by a group of eight persons under the name of Committee of Anambra State PDP House of Representatives Members-Elect alleging the judge of the following:-
· that His Lordship heard their Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/177/2015 which was adjourned for judgment on 25th March, 2015;
· that on the adjourned date, His Lordship did not deliver the judgment but adjourned the case sine die, to await the decision of the Supreme Court on another matter on the same issue, on is the list of PDP candidates for Anambra State for the General Elections of 2015;
· that His Lordship speedily heard and delivered judgement in another case in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/254/2015 filed later on the same issues, with intent to confer undue advantage on the Plaintiff who is from a family with which the Respondent has relationship;
· that the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the judgement ultimately given to the petitioners contained a paragraph that was not read in open Court by the Hon. Judge and that a phrase was altered, all to address an issue raised in the appeal that had already been filed by the Petitioner before the issuance of Certified True Copy (C T C);
· that some of the reasoning and conclusions of the Hon. Judge were summersaults;
· that the Respondent finally delivered judgement in the case on 8th July, 2016, five (5) months after the Supreme Court delivered the judgement he was awaiting contrary to the Constitutional provisions that judgements should be delivered within a period of 90 days.
· Though the Petitioners withdrew their petitions in accordance with to Regulation 16 of the National Judicial Council Judicial Discipline Regulations of 9th March, 2017, Council viewed His Lordship’s action of non-delivery of judgement within the stipulated time as misconduct contrary to Section 292 (1) (b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended and Rules 1.3 and 3.7 of the 2016 Revised Code of Conduct for Judicial Officers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
A statement from the information department of the NJC wanted members of the public to disregard news circulating on some news media that Justice Ademola has voluntarily retired, adding that the purported voluntary retirement is clearly an afterthought as Council had taken action before his decision to forward any voluntary retirement letter.
It said that Justice O. O. Tokode of the same Federal High Court was also recommended to President Muhammadu Buhari for compulsory retirement from office with immediate effect sequel to the findings of Council on the allegation contained in petitions forwarded by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and Miss Abimbola Awogboro.
“The Petitioners accused the Hon. Judge of misleading the Federal Judicial Service Commission and the National Judicial Council, by submitting six judgements he claimed to have personally conducted while practising as a lawyer; a pre-requisite for his application for appointment as a Judicial Officer, and was so appointed.
“The Investigation Committee of Council, however, found that the Hon. Judge personally conducted only one of the six cases submitted. Therefore, Council decided to recommend his compulsory retirement and the refund of all salaries and allowances he earned since his purported appointment to the position of a Judge to the coffers of the Judiciary.”
The statement said that in the interim, the NJC, in exercise of its power under paragraph 21 sub-paragraph (d) of the Third Schedule of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, has suspended Justices A. F. A. Ademola and O. O. Tokode from office with immediate effect.
“The Council also issued serious warning letters to Hon. Mr. Justice A. N. Ubaka of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria for failure to deliver Ruling in Suit No. NICN/BEN/51/2014 within the time specified time by law.
“The Council did not accept the reasons given for failure to deliver the Ruling within time.”
It said that Judge has also been placed on watch-list of the Council for the next one year even as the Council gave a warning letter to Justice Zainab Aliyu Sadat of the High Court of Niger State and placed her on the watch-list for three years for claiming that the Defendant in Suit No: NHSC/MN/46/2016 failed to make available authority cited by them after submission of the argument to her.
“Council at the Meeting also decided to dismiss the petition written by Senator Alimodu Sheriff alleging that Hon. Mr. Justice A. Liman of the Federal High Court of corruption for his failure to honour the invitation of the Investigation Committee on the three occasions that he sat to investigate the matter.
“Council exonerated Hon. Mr. Justice Simon Akpah Amogeda of the Federal High Court from corruption allegation by Ernest J. Henry, who could not substantiate his allegation.
“The Council decided to write the Petitioner a warning letter for maligning the name of the Hon. Judge.
“In addition, Council exonerated Hon. Mr. Justice F. I. Kola-Olalere of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria from any misconduct in the petition written against him by Samuel Atotuomah. Hon. Mr. Justice B. B. Kanyip of the same Court was also exonerated of the allegation of corruption written against him by Adebayo Jegede, Esq, who did not attend the Investigation Committee Panel to defend his allegation.
“The Council decided to report him to the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) for the unfounded allegation of corruption and the use of crude and insultive language against the Hon. Judge in his petition.
“The Petitions written against Hon. Mr. Justice Adama Iyayi-Laminkara, Chief Judge, Rivers State, Hon. Mr. Justice Maria Sanda Zukogi, Chief Judge, Niger State, Hon. Mr. Justice Eyo Effiom Ita, High Court, Cross River State, Hon. Mr. Justices S. A. Orugboyo and R. I. B. Adebiyi, High Court, Lagos State, were dismissed by the Council as all the Petitioners withdrew them and Council found no serious issues for further consideration in the allegations.
“Hon. Mr. Justice A. M. Lawal of Lagos State High Court was also issued a warning letter and placed on ‘watch-list’ for one year by the Council for unnecessary delay in delivering his Ruling and giving his personal phone number to parties.
“The petition written against Hon. Kadi Al-Hafis M. Abubakar of the Katsina State Sharia Court of Appeal by Mr Ibrahim Mukhtar Mashi was dismissed by the Council for lack of merit.
“Council also directed Hon. Mr. Justice Linda Amina Yarosi of the Customary Court of Appeal to resume duty from her sick leave immediately and placed on ‘watch-list’ for 3 months.
“All Judicial Officers placed on ‘watch-list’ of the Council will not be elevated or considered for special assignments during the period they are on the list.
“Within that period, Council reserves the right to consider their suitability or otherwise to continue as Judicial Officers based on their performance.” [myad]

“It even more so for us as a commercial and industrial state. We are convinced that you are best for these times when the country has begun to muster energy and resources to develop agriculture, infrastructure and empower the younger citizens.”

Osinbajo Rates Human Capital In Nigeria Higher Than Crude Oil, Solid Mineral, Land

Nigeria's Vice-President , Yemi Osinbajo
Nigeria’s Vice-President , Yemi Osinbajo

“Nigeria is a nation of great people and talent. Indeed, our human capital is the greatest gift and resource that we have, not our crude oil or solid minerals, or land.”
The nation’s Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo made this observation in Abuja, today, Thursday, at the investiture ceremony for the 2017 Laureates of the Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM) for two. Distinguished Nigerians: Professor Adesoji Adediran Adesina and Mr. Bruce Paul Obomoyema Onobrakpeya.
Vice President Osinbajo said that posterity called on the Nigerian elite, the intellectual, business and religious leadership which have the responsibility, “and we are called upon to work to ensure that this resource does not remain stranded at the level of potential, but that it is instead harnessed and exploited for the good of the country and all its people, posterity will not forgive us for anything less.”
Professor Osinbajo said that the Nigerian National Order of Merit is the highest and most prestigious award bestowed by Nigeria on its citizens for creative, intellectual and academic contributions that are of national and global importance.
He said that since its inception thirty-eight years ago, the Nigerian National Merit Award has identified and selected 75 awardees with each one of them epitomising the finest of Nigeria’s capacity for innovation and creativity.
The full taxe of the Vice President is reproduced here:
I am delighted to be here at this morning’s session of the occasion of the conferment of the Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM) Award on two distinguished Nigerians.
The Nigerian National Order of Merit is the highest and most prestigious award bestowed by Nigeria on its citizens for creative, intellectual and academic contributions that are of national and global importance, and it is being conferred on two distinguished nominees who have been adjudged worthy of the award by the Governing Board of the Nigerian National Merit Award.
Since its inception thirty-eight years ago, the Nigerian National Merit Award has identified and selected 75 awardees. Each one of them has epitomized the finest of Nigeria’s capacity for innovation and creativity.
I am extremely proud to welcome the new Laureates to this prestigious league of citizens.
The two awardees for 2017 are: Professor Adesoji Adediran Adesina, NNOM, who has been given this award for his work in Engineering Technology. His research work over the last three decades has made groundbreaking contributions to the mining, petrochemical, renewable energy, defence, and manufacturing. Prof. Adesina is credited with more than 400 refereed publications, patents and books, and has won several competitive research grants from government and industry sponsors.
I am sure that when we listened to what Prof. Sanni Sambo had to say about Prof. Adediran Adesina’s works, many of us were confused as to what exactly was being said. For example, I would quote from a piece that I read on his work. It says, “the excess water in the ethanol solution facilitates the separation of glycerol by-product from the oily phase while simultaneously improving the purity of the biodiesel.”
But I was relieved to see immediately after that, that this means we could take the waste oil from a local buka or a dodo street seller, to produce biodiesel. So, I am happy that Prof. Adesina interpreted for us some of the very complex things that he has been doing over the years.
We greatly honoured to be here to see a man who has served this nation and served his profession in different capacities. He supervised more than 100 graduate students to completion, including 42 PhD alumni who are now university professors in highly-ranked institutions, executives of the petrochemical processing industries, senior government officials and captains of engineering design & consulting firms across the world.
Mr. Bruce Paul Obomoyema Onobrakpeya, NNOM is a man being recognized for his work in the arts and humanities. He is a man of multiple talents and impressive achievements. A world-renowned artist, painter, and outstanding printmaker, he is also an illustrator of books, art experimentalist and initiator of art forms, philosopher, as well as a poet, author of books, philanthropist, and teacher.
For his work over the last six decades, Onobrakpeya has earned over 30 national and international awards and appointments, including a Silver Medal at the Fifth Triennial in India in 1982, and the SPANFEST Excellence Award – Lifetime Achievement Award in the Art, in 2013. In 2002, he was awarded the MFR (Member of the Order of the Republic of Nigeria) and in 2017, the honorary Doctor of Letters, by both the University of Ibadan and the Delta State University, where a new art gallery has also been dedicated to him.
His works span generations beginning even from the period of our independence, a period which is described by critics of arts as the period of Onobrakpeya’s Mythical Realism which spans the period 1957–62. And his art in this period is said to represent the period of his early development as the artist and this coincided with Nigeria’s Independence.
At that time, the idea of projecting the African personality was of major importance to the artists of that period and it was at this time that the Zaria Arts Society, the forerunner of the Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA), was formed and this was accompanied by the propagation of the concept of “natural synthesis”.
But Onobrakpeya goes beyond that period and in more contemporary times has been an advocate of important social causes and his art has depicted those important social causes and here we see Onobrakpeya focus on several social causes including paintings for divine prayers for help against military dictatorship and political instability.
And in more serious times the focus on the murder of Ken Saro-Wiwa. On the front burner also are the ecological and sociological problems which he also tried to depict in several of his works including Ekugbe (Unity), Nude & Protest and Smoke from the Broken Pipe.
Mr. Onobrakpeya has shown that an artist is not necessarily an entertainer; he is also a social commentator and has continued to contribute to Nigeria’s socio-political life for most of the period of his professional life.
Every winner of the NNOM is unique and on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari, and of the people of Nigeria, I congratulate you both on this great achievement. You are not just national treasures; you are now important milestones in the chequered history of Nigeria’s upward trajectory.
Your stories and attainments now inspire the future, it is on the sturdy shoulders of your achievements that the coming generation of Nigerian artists and scientists will stand with confidence and hope. This is the awesome responsibility that you bear.
Therefore for you, there will never be a time in your professional lives where you retire and proceed to bask in the abundance of past accomplishment. This is the tough price of your outstanding feats of intellection and innovation. In any event as the American statesman, Bernard Baruch said “A man can’t retire his experience. He must use it.”
Let me also congratulate your families, friends, associates and well-wishers, who have come to share with you the joy of today’s achievement.
Congratulations are also in order to the members of the Governing Board of the Nigerian National Merit Award, under the Chairmanship of Professor Shekarau Yakubu Aku, and members of the Board’s four Specialized Committees of Assessors and External Assessors for the excellent work they have done. Please keep up the good work.
The Federal Government will study the recommendations contained in the Communiqué of the 10th Annual Forum of NNOM Laureates 2017 and will continue to support, in every way, the development of Nigeria’s research and innovation capacity.
Nigeria is a nation of great people and talent. Indeed, our human capital is the greatest gift and resource that we have, not our crude oil or solid minerals, or land.
Posterity calls on us the Nigerian elite, the intellectual, business and religious leadership which have the responsibility, and we are called upon to work to ensure that this resource does not remain stranded at the level of potential, but that it is instead harnessed and exploited for the good of the country and all its people, posterity will not forgive us for anything less.
I thank you for listening.[myad]
