Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on media and publicity, Femi Adesina has made it clear that what the President wants is a responsible media instead of undue favour from it to him and his government.
He said also that the President and his administration do not believe in muzzling the press or the voice of opposition, and would never do so.
Femi Adesina, who spoke today, Thursday when he chaired the First Annual Conference of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), in Ikeja Lagos, said that President Buhari is more comfortable with responsible, fair and factual press than the one which tilts the truth just so as to favour him or to discredit him.
The Presidential spokesman expressed worry over the danger posed to the health of the nation by unregistered online news media as well as social media generally.
He made an example of the recent unnecessary dust which the social media raised concerning the health status of an elder statesman, Arthur Nzeribe.
He also made reference to several negative and hate speeches made by the same social media about the health status of President Buhari, all aimed at embarrassing the personalities involved.
Femi Adesina commended GOCOP for sticking to the ethics of journalism profession, which is why, he said, he had always been involved in its activities, even during the process of its formation and registration.
He announced that because of the strict adherance to professionalism, most of the GOCOP members, if not all of them, have been made members of the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE). He was the NGE President at the time President Buhari appointed him his special adviser on media and publicity.
Earlier, the outgoing President of GOCOP, Muskiliu Mojid, had rolled out some stringent conditions and guidelines for admitting any online publisher into the Guild, among which is that, the publsher must be a practicicng Journalist at senior level for not less than 10 years.
Mojid, who is the Editor-In-Chief of PREMIUM TIMES, said other conditions for publisher to be admitted into GOCOP are that, the platform of such publisher must have been registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) with identifiable office and that he should have at least, two functional reporters, among others.
He said that the Guild started about four years ago with just five members, and that the number had now risen to over 40.
Mojid stressed that members of the Guild are constantly being monitored ny themselves to ensure that they don’t use their platforms to intimidate, extort and carry out other unethical practices on members of the public.
Highlights of the Conference was lectures delivered by erudite scholars and the inauguration of the new executive of GOCOP, with Dotun Oladipo, publisher of The Eagle online as President. He and other executive members were elected last night at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Guild.[myad]

Cultist have sent residents of Udianga Enem and Abak-Obong communities in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State packing following attacks which claimed over nine lives.
The village head of Udianga Enem, Chief Mendie Udoekoriko, confirmed that six persons were killed in the community by the cultists that besieged the community last week.
And in Abak-Obong, it was learnt that two persons, including a traditional ruler, Chief Bassey Ikpaisong, were killed.
Udoekoriko said: “they burnt our Affiong Market and torched some houses including Idung Akpanowo, where they looted personal belongings including cash, motorbikes, palm oil and other farm produce.”
The monarch said that a pastor, who visited his aunty, was shot dead in his compound and his motorbikes seized, adding that he himself only managed to escape.
“Right now, some other miscreants are cashing in on the problems and total absence of security to break into people’s homes to steal their livestock, palm oil, foodstuff and other valuables.”
A resident and farmer, Mr. Anietie Edet, said that although the LGA chairman, Mr. Udeme Eduo, who hails from the village, promised to work with the police and the Department of State Services with a view to restoring calm to the troubled areas, it was later learnt that the chairman had abandoned his parents and other family members for his own life.
“This action by our chairman has created fear in the minds of the remaining residents and has forced them to escape from the villages to places like Iwukem, Utu Etim Ekpo, Abak, Uyo, Ikot Ekpene, and other safer areas, where they have relations and friends.
“Since the incident took place, the police would only come and blew siren for some minutes during the day time and left, leaving old people and others with nowhere to go at the mercies of thieves and other hoodlums who have taken over the communities.”
It was gathered that 18 traditional rulers in Obong clan, are working on a petition to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), for security reinforcement in the affected communities.
“The need for the petition is to draw Federal Government attention to the endangered people of Udianga Enem and Abak-Obong communities because we can’t continue to lose lives and property to hoodlums.”
He links the escalating violence in the communities to the forthcoming local government elections in the 31 LGAs of the state on November 11.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Chukwu Ikechukwu, who confirmed the incident, blamed leaders of the affected communities, who he said, always fail to report such breach of peace to the police during the occurrence of the incident for quick intervention.
“They don’t always report these cases to the police. We advise community dwellers with issues of security threats to always report same to law enforcement agencies for prompt action.”[myad]

Group Estimates Diezani’s Loot Huge Enough To Fund Construction Of 6 Airports

Former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Allison-Madueke

The Buhari Media Support Group (BMSG) has said that the stolen funds traced to former Petroleum Minister, Mrs Diezani Alison Madueke is huge enough to fund the construction of new world class airports in each geo-political zone.
In a statement today, Wednesday, the group said that the sum of N47.2 billion and $487.5 million in cash and property traced to Mrs. Madueke by the EFCC is also enough to complete the Lagos-Kano and Lagos-Calabar rail lines for which monies are being borrowed
The statement which was signed by BMSG Chairman, Austin Braimoh and its Secretary, Chief Cassidy Madueke said that the recovered loot is also enough to fund agriculture projects that could have generated employment for Nigerian youths.
Based on the development, the group called on Nigerians join hands in condemning the massive looting of the nation’s treasury by officials of previous administrations.
The group believes that the loot traced to the former Minister of Petroleum is a far cry from what she and others in the past governments pilfered from the national treasury and stashed in foreign accounts, thereby forcing the Nigerian economy to suffer instant depression.
It recalled that Diezani and her cronies, including Mr. Kola Aluko, Jide Omokore and others are currently being tried by the US government for money laundering running to over $1.7 billion.
The group said that a collective resolve by Nigerians to fight what it described as “psychotic and mindless” type of looting as exhibited by Diezani and others in their hey days in government, can halt the crave for looting by government officials.
It reminded Nigerians that although the fight against corruption is the foremost policy trust of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government, the fight may not attain a maximum result unless Nigerians willingly resolved to join hands with the government to fight the art of lootings and other forms of mismanagement in government.
The group is surprised that rather than organizing widespread protest to condemn looting and stealing of government funds by officials, past and present as often revealed by the anti-graft agencies, some Nigerians are only dissipating energies on attacking President Buhari, the main fighter of corruption on health matters.
It said that if Nigerians fail to collectively address the problem of corruption by offering practicable solutions and logistics supports for the institutions fighting the scourge, the future of the nation and the general wellbeing of its citizens will constantly be repressed and made forlorn.
The Group commended the anti-graft agencies, in particular the EFCC, for their sustained efforts in exposing corruption in Nigeria, appealing to the agencies not to give up, while ensuring prosecution of culprits of mindless looting of the Nigerian treasury.

Some Lessons From America, By Sufuyan Ojeifo

I am a bushman.  And, I make no pretensions about it. I do not mean that I am a supporter of former President of America, George Bush, Junior. Not at all! What I mean is that I am not cosmopolitan, but rather insular, pigeonholed in a little corner of Nigeria.  Save for journalism, I believe I would have been in a small village close to Owo in Ondo state, where I was born and bred, teaching the English language in some secondary school.
Providence ordered my steps to journalism. A personal decision to opt for the study of Mass Communication instead of English language, to me, represents the turning point.  This helped me to focus my eyes on the ball of journalism.  After two unsuccessful attempts at university admission through the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in 1984 and 1985 to study law, I was confronted with making a choice between studying English at the Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, and studying Mass Communication at the Auchi Polytechnic.
I scored 245 in the 1985 JAMB examination. It was a good score, but when subjected to the specifics of quota system and local government of origin, it was not good enough to qualify me for admission to study Law. The cut-off point for my local government area, the old Okpbeho Local Government, now Esan Central Local Government, was pegged at 252. I lost the opportunity of being admitted for the Law programme due to the formalism of quota system. I was advised to apply for a change of course to English language, which I declined.
If I was somewhat lucky to get my fallback position in journalism, what of other brilliant and smart Nigerian students whose steps in life had been cruelly altered by the formalism of quota system; and who had ended up in professions for which they never had passion? This variant of nepotism has also manifested in the form of federal character principle, which is a yardstick for employment into federal civil service in Nigeria. The corruptive predisposition has become so entrenched that political and public offices are now determined by the vagaries of zoning so much so that its observance has destroyed our sense of oneness.
The north-south divide has stuck out like a sore thumb.  Rather than prudently address the self-inflicted dichotomy through conscious efforts at political accommodation, we have allowed our nation to slip down the path of diversity through constructions of, at first, regional identities and now zonal identities. And right within the confines of these identities is a rash of unviable states created by the old guards of successive military governments to satisfy certain entrenched and extended interests.
Overall, merit has been sacrificed on the altar of nepotism. And because of selfishness and greed on the part of the elite and political leadership, the right things are sidestepped. They see exemplars in developed countries, but will not replicate them here.
It is clear that that the notion of sacrosanct national interests in Nigeria is a mirage.  What has been amply demonstrated is the only and ugly side of enlightened self-interest that finds anchorage in the mindless plundering of our national treasury and the economic re-partitioning of our nation by a clique. It is sheer elite conspiracy against the rest of us that successive governments have not put in place a workable system to punish corrupt public officials in ways that will serve as deterrence.
We watch helplessly as the bulk of our national wealth has found and continues to find its way into the private estates of a privileged few while millions of Nigerians wallow in abject poverty.  Nigeria has become a paradox of a supposed rich nation of poor people.  I am justifiably angry with Nigeria and the bazaar-canteen model of administration that leaderships foist on us in a deliberate bid to appropriate our commonwealth as their personal wealth. And, like a cult, they protect themselves despite their egregious culpability.
The truth, is, a nation that allows the foisting of a culture of corruption and all manner of maladministration on her people cannot enjoy the patriotism of the vast majority of her subjugated citizenry.  Governance and policy formulations have been elitist rather people-oriented.  And, yet the government demands the cooperation of the governed. This is not possible in a situation where government’s fidelity to the social contract is almost zero.
Nigeria practises the presidential system of government like America.  It also subscribes to federalism even if it is not conscientiously practised like America. Yet there are many positive things to learn from America’s bureaucracy, constitution-making, justice administration, political system, anti-corruption posture and the executive-legislature checks and balances of powers in relation to the overall interest of America and her people. The fine details of these are quite evident in the greatness of America.
But consider the recent vote by the American Senate on the “skinny repeal” option of the Obamacare (Affordable Care Act). The so-called “skinny repeal” bill, which the GOP titled the Healthcare Freedom Act, would have rolled back several Obamacare provisions, including the key individual and employer mandates.
The bill would have led to an estimated sixteen million Americans uninsured by 2026, according to a report from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO).  According to the CBO, “Premiums in the non-group market would increase by roughly 20 percent relative to current law in all years between 2018 and 2026.”  But three Republicans – John McCain, Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins – voted against it, thereby sinking the “skinny repeal” measure in a 49-51 vote.
The senate, controlled by the Republicans, rejected the proposed “skinny repeal” in the absence of a real replacement.  McCain said that skinny repeal would not offer a real replacement that would increase competition and lower healthcare costs. According to him, “We must now return to the correct way of legislating and send the bill back to the committee, hold hearings, receive input from both sides of aisle, heed the recommendations of nation’s governors, and produce a bill that finally delivers affordable healthcare for the American people.”
Senate Minority Leader, Chuck Schumer said Democrats were not celebrating but were relieved for Americans. What does this development explicate? It simply explains that the three Republican senators who broke ranks with their party voted with their eyes on the American interest, not on their party’s partisan position.  Obamacare is not about Obama; it is about affordable healthcare for Americans.  Is President Donald Trump’s planned replacement, if it eventually crystallises, capable of adding more values to the healthcare provisions for the benefit of Americans?
The trio of McCain, Murkowski and Collins, did not cave in to the brinkmanship of the presidency of Republican President Trump.  Not even the talks Vice President Mike Pence reportedly had with McCain before the vote could dissuade him.  This kind of nationalism by McCain and the other two Republican senators cannot happen in Nigeria.
Sadly, in Nigeria, legislators of the ruling party will, with good grace, abandon their people in order to be politically correct so that they can secure re-nomination or return tickets.  They will be ready to lick the ass of the president and even use his fart as deodorant to prove their loyalty for political survival. Such wicked elite conspiracy!  Exploited Nigerians must henceforth, and, anyhow, seek to redefine and insist on devotion to the terms of the social contract between them and those who govern them.

Newly Registered Political Party Sacks Leaders, Including Dokpesi, Nwanyanwu

APDANewly registered Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance (APDA) has divided into two factions with one of them announcing the sacking of the erstwhile chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Raymond Dokpesi as well as Chief Dan Nwanyanwu and Alhaji Mainasara Ilo.

This was even as another faction announced the sacking of Alhaji Shittu Kabiru Muhammad-led Interim National Working Committee of the party.

The three leaders, who were sacked by the first group, were alleged to be engaged in unlawful gathering in the name of the party and violating the constitutional provision of the party for holding illegal National Executive Council meeting, where the decision to sack the interim NWC was taken.

Earlier today, Tuesday, Dokpesi and some members of the party had gathered at what they called NEC meeting and pronounced the interim committee under Shittu leadership.

The stakeholders insisted that the tenure of the NWC members had expired since June 14 in line with the constitution of the party, and that the meeting of where the decision was taken complied with the party’s Contitution as well as the provisions of the Electoral Act as amended.

They gave the names of the new officers of the party as Mr. Mainasa Ilo (national chairman), Chief Dan Nwanyan (Chairman Board of Trustee), Mr Amobi Nwosu(National Secretary) Alhaji Muhammed Tanko (Deputy National Chairman, North), Dr ‎Fijabi Adebo (Deputy National Chairman, South) and Mr. Ide Felix Equabor as the National Publicity among others.

Speaking to news men shortly after the meeting, Ilo said out that the former NWC members ought to have organised a “proper meeting “to either extend their tenures or elect news officers in line with constitution of the party when their tenure expired but failed to do so.

We Used Tear-Gas When Hoodlums Infiltrated Anti-Buhari Protest In Abuja – Police

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police command has explained that its officers were forced to use canisters of tear-gas on those protesting against the none return of President Muhammadu Buhari from his medical vacation in London when it was clear that the protesters had been infiltrated by hoodlums and miscreants.

In a statement today, Tuesday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Anjuguri Manzah, the command said that it had no choice than to shoot tear gas canisters at the group in order to prevent breakdown of law and order, and disturbance of public peace in the nation’s capital.

The statement said that miscreants, hoodlums and other criminal elements infiltrated the protest held at Unity Fountain, Maitama, Abuja, saying: “the Police personnel intervened at the point that the concerned Nigerians Group lost control of the crowd and prevented miscreants, hoodlums and other criminal elements from hijacking the protest to cause mayhem and chaos.”

It said that a group known as “Our-Mumu-Don-Do Movement,” had carried out similar protest yesterday, Monday and were accorded necessary police presence to safe guard public peace, and protect their rights to freedom of expression, rights to peaceful Assembly and Association, and right to freedom of movement as provided for in sections 39, 40, and 41 of the 1999 constitution as amended.

Nigeria-Police“However, today, Tuesday, 8th August, the same group assembled at the same venue but allowed miscreants, hoodlums and other unruly individuals to infiltrate the protests, who started blocking the major roads adjoining the Unity fountain, obstructing traffic and preventing movements of other innocent citizens from going to their means of livelihood, and thereby exhibiting unruly behaviours and other violent acts very likely to cause the breakdown of law and order and disturbance of public peace.

“It is pertinent to state here that the FCT Police command is fully aware and recognizes the constitutional rights of every citizen including Our Mumu Dondo group to assemble and move freely in any part of the Federal Capital Territory, but the command will not allow any protest under any guise to turn violent and jeopardise the prevailing peace, law and order currently being enjoyed in the FCT.

“The command wishes to assure all residents and visitors to the territory of adequate security and protection of lives and property of everyone including those who choose to express their constitutional rights of protest with decorum.”[myad]
