A governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) in Osun State, Olawale Rasheed has called on state governments to create food banks to address the growing hunger in the country. In a statement issued to mark #WorldFoodDay today, Monday, the aspirant lamented that hunger among the populace is widening and is posing serious threat to societal stability and democratic sustainability. “I urge state leaders to set up food banks across local governments to hand out weekly food ration to the poor of the poor and thousands of our food -deprived fellow citizens. The situation is critical especially at the grassroots. “A food bank operated in conjunction with non governmental organisations will go a long way to alleviate the food crisis and provides succur to thousands of our citizens . It does not cost much and it will also serve to boost local economy as food materials will be sourced from local markets.” The aspirant who is media entrepreneur, said: “many among the citizenry need help and a critical step is to offer food lifeline to allow the weak to re-plan their lives without hunger as immediate threat. “Our leaders are widely travelled. Across Europe and elsewhere ,food bank is an integral part of the society because their leaders recognise the need to cater for the poor. As Governor of Osun state ,food bank will become operational a month after my assumption of office.”[myad]
Three young admirers of President Muhammadu Buhari: three-year old Maya Jammal, 12-year old Nicole Benson and 10 year-old Aisha Aliyu Gebbi, visited the President today, Monday at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja. The three young stars were believed to have shown more than ordinary interest in President Buhari’s administration by praying for his recovery during his ill-health. Maya Jammal became an internet sensation when her videoed prayer for the President’s recovery went viral, while Aisha Aliyu Gebbi penned a personal letter to President Buhari describing herself as his “biggest fan,” even as Nicole Benson contributed N5,785 to the President’s campaign in 2015, which was all saved up from her lunch and pocket allowance. Receiving the young guests, President Buhari expressed his gratitude to them, saying: “I am very impressed by what the children have been able to do. I can see Maya is shy. I watched her video where she was praying for my recovery when I was ill.’’ The President attributed his victory at the polls to the contributions of good hearted Nigerians, like young Nicole, who is from Lagos State, and who showed her support by sending her personal savings. “Nicole, I congratulate you, and myself for being here today. Your contribution made a great impact. As you can see, I am here in the Presidential Villa. Thank you.” President Buhari told Aisha that her letter was heart-warming abd that he felt re-assured knowing he had fans amongst the children. “Thank you very much for the letter,” the President said. Buhari said that he looked forward to more visits from the children, adding: “I am hoping that it will not be the first and last time we will be meeting while I am here. We will continue to meet even after I have left here.” Speaking on behalf of the parents of the children, Hon. Aliyu Ibrahim Gebbi said that the President’s gesture of inviting the children to the Presidential Villa was a dream come true. Gebbi said that the invitation also added to the President’s long standing record of good heartedness and fairness. “In a nation with few legends and accuracy of truth, we look up to you, Mr. President, and our children are looking up to you.” Maya lives in Abuja while Aisha is from Bauchi State. What started as a medical mystery in Cuba is fast developing into a diplomatic scandal that may damage improved relations between the USA and Cuba. Donald Trump who did not hide his hostility to the historic move by President Obama in 2014 to ease diplomatic tension between the two cold war adversaries is jumping at the opportunity to make real his campaign rhetoric against Cuba. He had called Fidel Castro “a brutal dictator” during his campaigns for the 2016 elections and promised that “all of the concessions that Barak Obama has granted the Castro regime were done through executive order, which means the next president can reverse them, and that I will do unless the Castro regime meets our demands.” It is therefore no surprise that even when the cause of the illness that has affected 21 diplomats in the American Embassy in Havana – who are afflicted with hearing loss and cognitive difficulties – is yet to be established, the US under President Trump is using it as a reason to reverse the gains in the relations between the two countries. With no evidence that the Americans were deliberately attacked, the Trump administration spontaneously expelled two Cuban diplomats over the illness and the State Department issued an advisory that Americans should not travel to Cuba. In a statement, Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson repeated the American assertion which has not been substantiated that the embassy personnel were deliberately targeted. But he did not blame Cuba, and even his officials held out the possibility that a third party might have been responsible. “Cuba has told us it will continue to investigate these attacks, and we will continue to cooperate with them in this effort,” Mr. Tillerson said. Even with such reassuring words from Tillerson, the actions of the US government since the outbreak of the mysterious disease has been decidedly hostile. Because some of the attacks occurred in hotels where US State Department employees were temporarily staying, officials said they worried that tourists and others could be affected. Even with assurances from the Cuban government that they could and were willing to protect American diplomats, the State Department announced that it was withdrawing all nonessential personnel from the embassy. The Trump administration, which has already expelled two Cuban diplomats over the strange illnesses, is considering further retaliatory steps. All these rash steps were taken regardless of the reaction of the Cuban President Raul Castro’s surprisingly open and cooperative attitude in his response to the crisis. He went as far as inviting the FBI to Havana to investigate the attack so as to substantiate his claim that Cuba had nothing to do with what was suspected to be an attack on U.S. diplomats. The Cuban government expanded the frontiers of cooperation with their response of dismay even as they promised to continue to cooperate in the investigation, calling the US decisions on the matter as a “hasty” one that “will affect the bilateral relations.” Given the positive reaction of President Rauf Castro and that of his government, it is abundantly clear that the steps taken by the US government are in line with Donald Trumps prejudiced and predetermined views on what the US policy to Cuba should be. In fact they represent a dangerous trend in Trumps disposition to foreign policy issues as they affect other flash points in global affairs be they in Iran, North Korea, Europe and Africa. Trump has threatened to repudiate the multilateral agreement that was signed by the US, China, France, Russia, Germany and the UK brokered by Obama with Iran on nuclear weapons. Over the weekend, he said he would not recertify the deal, opening another window of enmity with a strong Middle East country and other international players who endorsed the deal. His decision has already sparked reactions from the countries who signed the deal with some analyst saying the US under Trump is behaving like a rogue state. The 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), backed by then-President Barack Obama, imposed a series of internationally enforced safeguards on Iran’s nuclear activities — inspections, monitoring, dismantling of some facilities — meant to prevent Tehran from developing the world’s most devastating weapons. In return, the United States, Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia eased economic sanctions that had been imposed on Iran over its alleged pursuit of nuclear arms.He has gloated over Brexit and even with his closest buddy Putin of Russia, he does not seem to be on the same page on issues in Syria and Cuba. In North Korea, the twitter happy President has met his equal in a leader who is happy launching rockets and hauling insults. On Africa because of his hatred for Obama and contempt for the black race, he advocated during his campaigns for presidency that African countries should be recolonised. Today, as President of the USA, he hardly ever mentions the continent of Africa which ranks lowest in his foreign policy calculations. Given his bellicose stand on all issues in these troubled parts of the world, it would appear he came into office “in search of enemies” as excellently argued by John Stockwell the CIA chief of station in South Africa in his book by that title during the cold war years of the 70’s. America couldn’t have given the world a more dangerous President in the post-cold war era than Donald Trump.[myad]

Billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, popularly known as Evans, has said that he bribed officers of the Inspector General of Police’s Intelligence Response Team to the tune of N50 Million and gifts of valuables running into hundreds of millions of naira.
Evans’lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje, who petitioned the Police Service Commission on behalf of his client, also accused the officers of sexually molesting Evans’ girlfriend, Amaka Offor.
Copies of the petition, which was submitted to the authority yesterday, Friday, were sent to the National Assembly, the Inspector General of Police, the National Human Rights Commission, and Amnesty International.
“Our client has duly briefed us on the above captioned subject matter involving the police officers and policemen attached to the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team,” read the petition captioned in part ‘The Evans Case and Saga: Brazen Extortion, Corruption, Gross Misconduct, Indiscipline, Sexual Molestation and Human Rights Violation Against the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team Police Officers and Policemen.’
Evans had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy and kidnapping on August and is currently at the Kirikiri Maximum Prison awaiting sentencing by a Lagos court.
In this latest development, Mr. Ogungbeje accused the police, who detained him (Evans) for almost three months, before his first appearance in court, of forcefully collecting millions of naira as well as valuables and properties from his client.
“For the avoidance of doubt, it is our secured brief that in the course of investigating our client while being detained in the custody of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) on the allegation of kidnapping, the following under-listed items were forcefully and corruptly extorted from our client.
1. The sum of N50, 000,000 (Fifty Million Naira) cash.
2. Another sum of N5,000,000 (Five Million Naira) sent by our client’s wife as pressured by the above policemen.
3. Twenty-five (25) Mack Trucks forcefully taken but not listed as exhibits in the ongoing criminal trial of our client.
4. Brigade wristwatch worth One Hundred and Seventeen (117) Thousand U.S Dollars.
5. Pendant cross worth Seventy (70) Thousand U.S Dollars.
9. Ten (10) Thousand U.S Dollars cash extorted by ASP Phillip Rieninwa.
10. Five (5) Pieces of Saphono Rucci Diamond Rings worth One Hundred (100) Thousand U.S Dollars.
11. Lexus 470 Jeep.
12. Grand Cherokee Jeep.
13. L 400 Mitsubishi Bus.
14. Toyota Highlander (Gold Colour).
15. Eighty-Five (85) Inches Samsung Television set worth 6.5 Million Naira amongst others.
The lawyers added that, “our client also confided in us that one (Amaka Offor) his girlfriend was sexually molested and abused by the above policemen of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT),” the petition read.
The petition urged the Police Service Commission to conduct an investigation into the incident and invoke appropriate sanctions including dismissal against the culpable police officers.
“Sir, you would agree with us that these allegations are too weighty to be ignored by any right-thinking Nigerian.
“There is no gainsaying the fact that it calls for prompt investigation, inquiry and appropriate sanctions. We are using this medium as our own way of galvanizing institutional sanity, cleansing and reform in the Nigeria Police Force as an institution.
“As we speak, the brother in law and other relations of our client are still being detained and tortured by the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) without being arraigned before a Court of law,” the petition added. [myad]
File Photo: President Muhammadu Buhari delivering speech in Beijing during the working visit to the Peoples Republic of China last year
President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed surprise at the rapid way the government of China, under the Communist Party of China (CPC), had lifted over 700 million people from poverty level.
In a letter of felicitation with President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China, on the occasion of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), President Buhari said: “in the past 30 years and more, over 700 million Chinese have been lifted out of poverty, creating a Chinese miracle in the history of poverty reduction.”
President Buhari acknowledged that the leadership of CPC has been the defining feature of socialism with Chinese characteristics, adding that China has made remarkable progress under the leadership of CPC and remains an inspiration to developing countries and the whole world.
The Nigerian leader said that China had become an indispensable force in the comity of nations and that the 19th National Congress of CPC will be a new starting point in the history of China and will usher in a new period of great accomplishment for the party and the nation.
“As you often say, ‘Empty talk harms the country, while hard work makes it flourish.’ Under the strong and focused leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Your Excellency as its core, the CPC has continuously guided the Chinese people to achieve the Two Centenary Goals and realize the Chinese Dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, while China is becoming an indispensable force in the comity of nations. Indeed, I am satisfied with the mutually beneficial cooperation between Nigeria and China.
“While expecting the delivery of policy guidelines and framework for China’s development and foreign relations in the next 5 years and beyond, and the election of a new CPC Central Committee, we wish the 19th National Congress of the CPC a complete success.”
President Buhari, on behalf of the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, congratulated the Chinese strongman and all the 2287 delegates and the 89 million party members on the occasion of the 19th National Congress of the ruling party.[myad]
Several churches in the United States of America are closing down and are being converted to breweries, reports from the country fondly called “God’s Own Country” said.
A recent article by the Associated Press spoke of at least 12 such churches, with four others about to join.
It identified the Church Brew Works in Pittsburgh, “an early church-turned-brewery that opened in 1996,” as one of the pioneers.
“Owner, Sean Casey, bought the former church because it was cheap and reminded him of beer halls he used to frequent in Munich. Aficionados cite its rustic decor as a major draw,” the article said.
It said that one of the latest to be converted to a brewery is a 1923 Presbyterian church bought last year by an investor, Ira Gerhart, “to fulfill his years long dream of opening a brewery: It was cheap, charming and just blocks from downtown Youngstown.”
The article said that soon after Gerhart announced his plans, residents and a minister at a Baptist church just a block away complained about alcohol being served in the former house of worship.
“I get it, you know, just the idea of putting a bar in God’s house,” Gerhart said. “If we didn’t choose to do this, most likely, it’d fall down or get torn down. I told them we’re not going to be a rowdy college bar.”
“With stained glass, brick walls and large sanctuaries ideal for holding vats and lots of drinkers, churches renovated into breweries attract beer lovers but can grate on the spiritual sensibilities of clergy and worshippers,” the AP article said.
It disclosed that at least 10 new breweries have opened in old churches across the country since 2011, and at least four more are slated to open next year.
“The trend,” according to AP, “started after the 2007 recession as churches merged or closed because of dwindling membership. Sex abuse settlements by the Roman Catholic Church starting in the mid-2000s were not a factor because those payments were largely covered by insurers, according to Terrence Donilon, spokesman for the archdiocese of Boston.”
Gerhart’s is scheduled to open this month after winning over skeptics like the Baptist minister and obtaining a liquor licence, according to AP.
It spoke of growing opposition by the clergy of the affected faiths, “leading to the deed restrictions to stop other closed churches from becoming bars and clubs” in places such as Cincinnati and Altoona-Johnstown, Pennsylvania, “while the Boston archdiocese says it solicits proposals from potential buyers and screens them to make sure they’re in line with Catholic values.”
“Churches,” according to the article, “are uniquely difficult to renovate, preservationists say. Large stained windows and cavernous sanctuaries are tough to partition into condominiums. Historic landmark protections can bar new owners from knocking down some churches, leading them to sit empty and decay.
“But the same vaulted ceilings that keep housing developers away from churches also lend them an old-world air hard to replicate elsewhere, making former houses of worship particularly suitable as dignified beer halls.”[myad]
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has asked the University of Lagos to try and maintain the high standards for which it was known from its inception.
He said: “I want to say that UNILAG has proved time and time again to be not just a university of first-choice but also the University of firsts! So many firsts in different areas; just reading about Doctor Olukoya, he was the first to clone genes. Hardly anyone would know that the pastor and founder of Mountain of Fire and Miracles were also the first to clone genes. That is an absolutely outstanding thing.”
Professor Osinbajo, who spoke at the 2017 Distinguished Alumni Awards and celebration of the University’s 55 anniversary, added: “the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God was also the first Nigerian to get a PhD in a Nigerian university in Applied Mathematics. I think that there are so many other Firsts, but the most important thing today is to ensure that those firsts do not become the last.
“We must ensure we continue in the great traditions of the University of Lagos and this is why I am so excited to see a lot of committed alumni who want to see to it that our University goes from glory to glory.”
Vice President Osinbajo stressed the importance of private participation in the development of universities, stressing that it is obvious now that government alone cannot support universities to the extent that is required, to keep them even at the current levels.
“A lot will have to come from the Alumni and the private sector. That’s how great universities all over the world are run.”
He congratulated all the awardees, saying that not only are their achievements worthy of celebration, but that the fact that they came from such a great institution and honoured by the institution is real reason for them show appreciation.[myad]
Former World Bank Vice President, Oby Ezekwesili has defended President Uhammadu Buhari’s appeal to the world financial institution to assist in rehabilitating people in the Northeast who have been devastated by Boko Haram conflict, saying that such assistant falls within the world bank policy Oby Ezekwesili, who is currently the leader of the Bring Back Our Girls Campaign said that president Buhari’s statement was taken out of context by some media outfits, emphasising that it is one of the policies of World Bank to give more attention to post-conflict zones like the north-east. The World Bank President, Jim Yong Kim, had said in a press conference in Washington DC that President Buhari requested concentration of the bank’s intervention effort in the northern part of Nigeria but some social media accusing Buhari of being a regional leader. In a series of tweets addressing the issue, Ezekwesili said; “the terrible indecorous press release by Femi Adesina worsens a fractious debate. This FG cannot be leaders of toxicity in public debate. Healthy debates are important for managing our diversity. The government of President Buhari should reign in his media team and retrain them to be effective. At the time they met in 2015, serious work and discussions already took place among Development Partners on HOW BEST TO HELP STABILIZE North East.” She explained that “as a practice, post-conflict zones e.g. Northern Uganda, Northern CAR, Eastern DRC received special focus from World Bank. As the destabilization in the north-east worsened human development indicators in north-east Nigeria, our country sadly joined that list. “Prioritising Reconstruction of Post-Conflict zone in ANY of those countries FACTUALLY PROVED to be KEY for REST OF COUNTRY GROWTH and STABILITY!” Ezekwesili said that the prioritization of the north-east in the discussion between President Kim and President Buhari is not unusual, adding that it was an outcome of a 2015 meeting among development partners on how best to stabilize north-east. She said that it does not mean that other regions in the country would be neglected. “Prioritizing reconstruction of a post-conflict zone in any of those countries factually proved to be key for rest of the countries’ growth and stability. The benefit of becoming a priority is that our knowledge program (Economic and Social Studies) and a sizeable portion of the loan will target the area. I want EVERYONE to KNOW that the statement made by the @WorldBank President @JimYongKim IS NOT AS IT SOUNDS.”[myad]
Corporate and strategic communications of the NPA, Abdullahi Goje
The Nigerian ports authority (NPA), has explained that it recently revoked a multi-million dollar contract with Intels, a company co-owned by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar because it consistently refused to implement the federal government’s Treasury Single Account (TSA).
A statement by the general manager, Corporate and strategic communications of the NPA, Abdullahi Goje said that the Port Authority was compelled to issue the statement in reaction to questions raised by the general public on the threat by Intels Nigeria Limited to fight the recent termination of its boats pilotage monitoring and supervision agreement.
The statement said that that the Authority relied on the advice of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, in arriving at the decision to terminate the contract, adding that the legal advice was sought after more than one year of attempts to get Intels to comply with the Federal Government’s directive on the Treasury Single Account (TSA).
“The first such correspondence was through a letter written by the former Executive Director, Finance and Administration, Mr. Olumide Oduntan on June 28, 2016, directing the company to pay all revenues collected on behalf of the NPA into the TSA subaccount at the CBN.
“All further attempts by the Authority to get the company obey this directive was met with various excuses until the Authority wrote to seek the AGF’s legal advice on how to proceed with the NPA/Intels relationship in a letter dated May 31, 2017.
“The legal advice contained in a September 27, 2017, letter addressed to the Managing Director of the Authority, Hajia Hadiza Bala Usman, by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mallam Abubakar Malami (SAN) expressly stated as follows : “For the avoidance of doubt, the agreement for the monitoring and supervision of pilotage districts in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Nigeria on terms inter alia that permits Intels to receive revenue generated in each pilotage district from service boat operations in consideration for 28% of total revenue as commission to Intels is void, being a contract ex facie illegal as formed for permitting Intels to receive federal government revenue contrary to the express provisions of Sections 80(1) and 162(1) and (10) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which mandates that such revenue must be paid into the Federation Account/Consolidated Revenue Fund.
“In the premise of the above, the conflict between the agreement and the TSA policy presents a force majeure event under the agreement, and NPA should forthwith commence the process of issuing the relevant notices to Intels exiting the agreement which indeed was void ab initio.”
“As a responsible agency of the Federal Government, the Authority, therefore, proceeded to act as advised, which is to terminate the contract forthwith.
“The Authority has taken note of threats by Intels to withdraw its investment plans in Nigeria and must point that business thrives in favour of everyone involved only when the laws of the country of operation are adhered to. No organisation is above the Nigerian constitution and it is only when all corporate entities obey the laws of the country that everyone benefits. There must be a level playing field for all players in the sector and this is the commitment of the Authority.
“However, the Authority respects the right of Intels and all other corporate entities in Nigeria to explore opportunities presented by the courts to enforce their rights in as much as the Authority is confident of the correctness of the step that it has taken.
“The board and management of the NPA is committed to serving the best interest of Nigeria at all times and this is what has happened in the case under discussion.”[myad]
