Activities Of IPOB May Affect Chances Of Igbos Becoming President In Nigeria – Okorocha

RochasOkorochaGovernor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has expressed the fear that activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have the capacity of affecting the chances of Igbos becoming elected  President of Nigeria in a long time to come.
He said that the IPOB agitation for Biafra has overshadowed the real issue of marginalization of the Igbos.
Speaking to news men in Owerri, capital of Imo State, the governor said that IPOB is not good for the Southeast and that it is not the best way for them to complain about marginalisation to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“There are better ways; the IPOB way is too primitive. If IPOB must do a thing like that it should have changed the name and fought the way Ijaw youths fought, Arewa youths fought, and they would have made more impact. For everything that comes from the Igbo man, we love to go to the extreme.
“Now you want to separate yourself from Nigeria, meanwhile, South-South will not go with you, Edo, Rivers will not go with you. If you cut us off here now as South east, if I need to go to Rivers State, I will go and ask for passport and visa, and we are keeping quiet to say this.
“If there is a crisis now, there is no Hausa man in Igbo land who has a duplex, there is no Yoruba man who has a room and parlour or a N20 million investment in Igbo land, but Igbo have trillions of naira virtually everywhere.
“The same people are asking for secession. If Igbo are asked to go, what happens? They would lose their property, and all of us are keeping quiet, supporting IPOB! It was very childish, and those behind this should stop, that is my advice.
“South-South has produced the president, South-West has produced a president and Vice President, the north has produced many presidents, it is hoping that one day in the next shift, by whatever arrangement, the next people that should be considered is the South-East by Nigeria’s sharing formula.
“So, where are we in our wisdom and the intelligence? That is my position on IPOB; my advice is that Igbo should change their style and condemn IPOB in a manner that should be done and let us flow with the rest of Nigeria for now because we shall benefit more than anyone else.”[myad]

It’s A Lie, No Local Council Is under Boko Haram, Nigerian Army Responds To Buba Galadima

Nigerian-armyThe Headquarters of Theatre Command Operation Lafiya Dole has said that contrary to a statement credited to one Buba Galadima published in The Guardian newspaper, there is no single local government presently under the control of Boko Haram insurgents.
Buba Galadima, was said to claim in the interview in The Guardian newspaper of 21 September 2017, that seven local governments of Borno State were still under the control of Boko Haram terrorists, “even though he failed to furnish members of the public with the names of those Local government areas.”
In a statement today, Friday, by the Deputy Director of Public Relations of the Theatre Command, Operation Lafiya Dole, Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu the Nigerian Army condemned what it called ‘this sweeping statement’
It said that Buba Galadima’s statement was not only an attempt to propagate falsehood but a futile effort to disinform members of the public on the true security situation in the Northeast from a perspective of one who is evidently detached from the realities of the counter terrorism cum counter insurgency operations.
“It is very crucial to set the record straight by making it crystal clear that contrary to his opinions, the Boko Haram Terrorists group does not hold or control any Local Government Area in Borno state or in the north east as claimed in the interview.
“These Local Government Areas have been liberated by troops of operation Lafiya Dole and the troops have continued to ensure security in these areas after routing out the insurgents. As a matter of fact, locals have been encouraged to return to their communities to resume their vocations and normal life.
“It may be needful to refresh memories by recalling that prior to the inauguration of Operations Lafiya Dole, the entire north east was infested with Boko Haram Terrorists, who became emboldened to the extent of declaring a caliphate with headquarters in Gwoza town. All that became history as the gallant troops of Operation Lafiya Dole came into the theatre, gradually but steadily decimating the insurgents and liberating held territories in a series of well-planned and coordinated joint ground and air operations.
“One of such major operations was the Operation RESCUE FINALE, which routed the insurgents out of its tactical headquarters in Camp Zeiro in Sambisa forest and out of its so called spiritual headquarters in Alargarno. Ever since, Operation Lafiya Dole has continued to relentlessly conduct several other operations such as Operation DEEP PUNCH, CHIKIN GUDU Operation and Operation RAWAN KADA alongside the Multinational Joint Task Force.
“These and many other operations have culminated in the degradation and incapacitation of the insurgent group. Apparently, this is the reason, the terrorist group is striving to remain relevant by resorting to callously use women and children to carry out suicide bomb attacks on soft and vulnerable targets.
“Currently, Operation Lafiya Dole in its resoluteness is carrying out precursor operations that will lead to a final assault to decisively and finally put an end to the insurgency in the north east.
Talking about logistical supplies, Operation Lafiya Dole regularly provides logistical support and replenishment to own troops deployed in all locations and Forward Operational Bases through the normal channels, using our main supply routes.
“Morealso, Theatre and formation Commanders routinely conduct working visits to troops in their formations and units within the theatre of operation. Hence, the question of troops been inaccessible as portrayed in the said article is an irredeemable fallacy. Perhaps it is necessary to note that considering the vastness of the north east, Operation Lafiya Dole, aside holding tactical defensive positions to block the insurgents from access to logistics, has also gone ahead to insert Mobile Strike Teams in the theatre of operations to effectively patrol localities as well as seek out and neutralize the insurgents from their hideouts. Suffice to mention that in the month of August alone, a total of 82 Boko Haram insurgents have been killed in combat and 630 remote settlements were cleared by own troops.
“Our troops are tirelessly on the trail of the fleeing insurgents as devastating coordinated aerial and artillery bombardments are being unleashed on the terrorist group.
“Our troops are therefore not waiting only to repel BHT attacks as erroneously painted in the article, but are rather tactically deployed to deny the adversary freedom of action and access to logistics.
“Needless to add, that a group of insurgents on the run cannot hold or control any territory. Boko Haram lacks the capability to hold any territory in the north east, hence its mindless attack on innocent and vulnerable civilians with suicide bombings, most of which were made unsuccessful by our vigilant troops.
“While not attempting to dismiss the fact that as the fleeing faceless insurgents rummage for logistical replenishment, they occasionally mix up with unsuspecting locals and thereafter attack them.
“This definitely cannot be described as holding territory, rather, it only simply underscores the need for other relevant agencies to do more to ensure progressive reintegration of the locals into their various communities.
“Without sounding immodest, it is worthy to note that the counter terrorism and counter insurgency operations of Operation Lafiya Dole in the north east, has been commended within Nigeria and in the international community, resulting in several high-level official visits to the north east by national and international bodies.
“While assuring that our focus in Operation Lafiya Dole remains clear and will not be derailed, the general public is urged not be misguided by the insinuations and disinformation contained in the said article as they are devoid of the true and realistic impressions of the security situation in the north east.”[myad]

Why I Stopped Allocating New Land To Those In Need, FCT Minister Explains

FCT Minister Bello 5

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Malam Muhammad Musa Bello has said that his government has stopped allocating new land to those in genuine need for it in an effort to control slums.

“We sat down and reflected and we said if we keep on opening phases and we don’t provide infrastructure, at the end of the day, we would just have pockets of slums all over the city. That’s why as an administration, we are not keen on giving land because we are not sure of when infrastructure is going to be there.”

The minister, who spoke today, Thursday, when he received in audience, the management of the National Defence College, was responding to request by the team for a piece of land to build a housing estate for its staff.

Muhammad Bello said that it would be futile for people or organizations to continue to apply and wait for land for mass housing in the already developed phases of the territory, where land allocations have fully exhausted.

He rather advised such government institutions and other private organizations seeking land for mass housing in the FCT to take advantage of the empty estates that are littered across the city and negotiate with finance houses for a suitable long term financing agreement.

According to the minister, the template of everybody getting land and starting a cooperative housing estate is no longer feasible in the FCT, adding that interested parties should identify reasonably priced houses and go into agreement with a financial institution to work out a long term financing model that should be able to meet up with their requirements.

“The reality is that getting land where infrastructure is developed partially or about to be developed is going to be increasingly difficult.

“Land is no longer available in phase 1, phase 2, phase 3, and even in some parts of phase 4 of Abuja.”

Muhammad Bello said that his administration is reviewing land allocations which was made to government institutions and other developers in the territory for mass housing purposes and that such land might revoked and reallocate to more serious contenders in the areas where no appreciable development have been.

The Minister frowned at the rapid expansion of illegal settlements in Piwoyi axis, saying that steps are being taken to discourage the negative trend.

“The villages that you see springing up there are all illegal and if we all agree that they are illegal, then it’s better for us so that we treat them as such. Normally, it’s the construction and the activity in your permanent site and all the other major institutions that are coming up there that are attracting these people.

“If we all keep quiet and we don’t do anything, they will continue to grow. But they are really not supposed to be there and they are usually people that work in your site or work for some of the other construction sites there.”

The minister commended the management of the National Defence College for working towards completing the permanent site of the college at Piwoyi.

He said that his administration will do whatever necessary to ensure that they in move as quickly as possible to a more comfortable location, adding that a number of national and multilateral agencies are waiting to take over their existing location.

Muhammadu Bello said that his administration is working towards addressing the infrastructural challenges around Piwoyi, pointing out that part of the plan is to open up that area through the relevant arterial roads that are in the Abuja Master Plan.

“As you can see, the legislative college is almost done. If you notice, you will see that the Korean Model School also is almost done. A lot of developments are going on around the area.”

Earlier, the Commandant of the National Defence College, Rear Admiral Adeniyi Osinowo said that the team was on a familiarity visit to the minister to explain what they have been doing and also raise issues for the attention of the FCT Minister.

“As our landlord, we have continued to enjoy your support and we are very grateful, particularly the relationship between the administration and the College. The College has continued to grow in strength and in terms of the scope of our activities.

“We have benefiting from all the good things the territory has offered us, particularly the physical properties we have, the permanent site is somewhere in Piwoyi and we hope in the coming years, we will relocate there fully.” [myad]

We Won’t Recognize ‘Black Market Court Order’ Proscribing IPOB – Spokesman

Biafra soldiers

The Media and Publicity Secretary of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Emma Powerful, has described the order proscribing it as ‘Black Market order’ which he said members of the group will not recognize.

He said that the Abuja Court which proscribed the IPOB yesterday, Wednesday, acted to impress the Federal Government of President Mohammadu Buhari and that the proscription will not stand.

In a statement, Emma Powerful said that the group’s team of lawyers were in the court today, Thursday to quash the order, but the Chief Judge, Justice Abdul Kararati was not in court, adding: “we want to tell the world that IPOB under Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not bothered about the alleged proscription, and we also wish to alert well meaning Nigerians and the world that the Chief Judge justice Dafarati of the Federal High Court Abuja was not on sit and duty today when he found out that IPOB team of lawyers stormed the Court Abuja to challenge the Federal Government obnoxious order obtained from his court.

“Justice Abdu Kafarati gave order yesterday proscribing and labeling IPOB as unlawful and terrorist organization which brought much condemnation from well meaning Nigerians and the world.

“We are aware that the Nigerian Federal Government is resorting to all sorts of measure to frustrate us but we want to tell them we are not bothered about their obnoxious order proscribing IPOB, we will continue our peaceful agitations while they go on with their baseless and shameful proscription we do not recognize.

“IPOB lawyers stormed the federal high court today in Abuja to challenge the obnoxious order but unfortunately the chief judge went out of sit in other to delay and frustrate IPOB because he is fully aware the judicial blunder he committed against humanity. The chief judge was nowhere to be found in the chamber.

“We wondered why the Chief Judge will be out of his sit while he is aware that IPOB team of lawyers arrived to challenge the concocted and fraudulent order obtained against IPOB members.

“We are also aware that the black market order was a product of compromised by people who are bent on destroying the people of Biafra, but failed, they were bought over to prescribe and label IPOB a terrorist group.

“The judge also knows the implications of what he did and that was why he chose to be out of sit to frustrate every efforts IPOB is making to challenge this order.

“However, we are calling on Nigerian Judicial Commission, NJC and the Chief Judge of the Federation to call the Justice Kafarati to order to avoid destroying and making nonsense of the image of Nigerian Judicial System.” [myad]

Mass Importation Of Illegal Arms Worries Custom Boss, Places Officer On Red Alert

The frequency with which arms are being imported but intercepted at the entry points in Nigeria is a source of worry for the Controller General of Nigeria Custom Service (NCS), retired Colonel Hameed Ibrahim Ali. The Custom boss has therefore directed all Custom Area Controllers to be alert.
Another of such seizure of arms cache was made today, Thursday, at Tin Can Island Port, Apapa, Lagos.
The Custom boss, who addressed news men at the Tin-Can Island Port premises over the interception of 470 pump action actions rifles at the port said that it has become pertinent to keep all the border posts in Nigeria alert.
The interception of the arms came barely one week after the command intercepted a 20-foot container load of 1,100 pump action rifles.
This seizure is the third in the series of containers loads of arms seizure at Tin-Can port alone and fourth in the country within eight months.
Following the increase in the number of arms seizure in recent times, Ali said that Custom Area Controller, Tin-Can Port, Apapa, Lagos, Comptroller Bashir Yusuf had ordered a detail profile of all imports, especially those coming from Turkey the same source with previous seizure.
“The profile of container from Turkey was eventually narrowed down to one 20ft container No CMAU189817/8. The terminal operator was consequently directed to quarantine the flagged container for stricter analysis.
“It was later transferred to enforcement unit where 100 percent examination revealed 470 pump action rifles as against elbow plumbing plastics on his bill of lading.
“The importer of this deadly cargo is Great James Oil Limited, while the vessel is MV Arkas Africa owned by Hull Blyth. The discovery bring to a total of 2671 rifles seized within the last eight months of this year.”
The Custom Boss said that the audacity of the criminals to think that they can succeed in smuggling these dangerous weapons into the country successfully remain worrisome.
He said, however, that the new Nigeria Customs Service is more responsive and capable of meeting the challenges posed by the criminals.
Ali appealed to Nigerians to rise up and remain vigilant to deal decisively with the enemies of this nation, stressing that as seaports are increasingly impenetrable, he suspects they may want to try other entry points.
“I call on well Nigerians to support the service by providing information that will help us perform even better.”
He said that since the container belong to the same importer of 1,100 rifles, ongoing investigation will be reinvigorated to fish out all those directly or remotely connected with the dangerous importers.
“The policy of rewards for good deeds and punishment for those who compromise will continue in the service under my leadership.”[myad]

How We Averted Trade Union Strike That Could’ve Collapsed Nigeria’s Economy – Ngige

Minister of Labour and employment, Chris Ngigi
Minister of Labour and employment, Chris Ngigi

Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr. Chris Ngige has painted a picture of how the nation’s socio economy would have collapsed if he and his team had not rose to the occasion by dissuading workers in vital areas of the economy from embarking on strike nationwide.
He said that such workers are under yet-to-be-registered
United Labour Congress (ULC), made up of National Union of Electricity Workers, (NUEW), the NUPENG, the National Association of Pilots, Engineers and Electronic Managers in the Airports, (NAPEEM) and the National Union of Banks and Financial Institutions Workers which is (NUBIFE).
“These are unions that affect the life of everybody. If you don’t have electricity; if you don’t have petrol and diesel and kerosene and you don’t have access to money in your ATM in the banks, something serious could happen to one’s life so we decided to, in the spirit of collective bargaining and social dialogue as enshrined in the ILO Convention, engage them.”
Dr. Ngige, who briefed news men shortly after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting today, Wednesday, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said that these unions had earlier threatened to go on strike starting from Monday.
“We engaged them yesterday and this morning, we engaged them before Council and I am happy to announce that they have agreed to call off the strike with effect from today. So,  we are getting the striking workers back to their beats.”
He recalled that just this week, the Academic Staff Union of Universities called off its five weeks strike, followed by that of the National Association of Resident Doctors and  the Non Academic Staff Union, Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities and NAAT all of which are university based trade unions.
“I am happy to announce that after intense and fruitful deliberations, National Association of Resident Doctors called off their strike about a week ago, followed by ASUU that called off their strike last Monday. Efforts are on to get NASU, SSANU AND NAAT which came under a Joint Action Committee called JAC of unions of universities to call off their strike today.
“The underlying thing is that the government has assured all of them that we have the welfare of our people at heart and for those of them who were angling for payment of arrears of salaries, shortfall of salaries, promotion arrears,  leave allowances, benefits, government has shown good faith and has started paying.
“We hope to continue paying and the monies that are not paid this year will be captured in the 2018 Appropriation budget.”[myad]

Police Moves To End Prolong Detention Of Detainees, Torture, Extortion; Launches Legal Aid

fct-police-boss-mustapha-mThe Nigeria Police has embarked on measure to eliminate allegation by detainees of prolonged detentions, torture and extortion at Police formations across the country.
This came in the wake of the launching, today, Wednesday, by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim K. Idris, of the Police Duty Solicitors’ Scheme (PDSS), aimed at ensuring an efficient Criminal Justice Sector with emphasis on the rights of persons arrested and detained by the Police to easily access legal representation.
Launching the scheme, Idris said that it will eliminate the usual allegation of prolonged detentions, torture and extortion at Police formations across the country.
“The legality of the Scheme is derived from Section 36(5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended.
“Both the Force and the general public stand to benefit from this Scheme. The Police who are often accused of torture and inhuman treatment at police stations will now have an independent person not only to act as a check to their excesses but they could be vital witnesses to the officers when accused wrongly.
“On the other hand, the public, mainly the poor and the vulnerable arrested by the Police for being in conflict with the law will not only have the services of a counsel free of charge to ensure the protection of their rights but at no cost.”
The Police boss said that the management under him has a zero tolerance for the violation of the rights of citizens and corruption.
“There will be no hiding place for officers whose conducts run foul with the law. You must learn to be professional in the discharge of your duties and shun all forms of misconduct. “Equally, I wish to assure you that this Administration rewards honesty and hard work. Any good work of yours will not go unnoticed and unrewarded.
“For our partners, the Legal Aid council and the Open Society Initiative, I commend your efforts in the realisation of this laudable step in the Criminal Justice Sector. You are however advised to ensure that the scheme is not seen as a usurpation of Police functions but simply to have easy access to detainees in the Police formations to protect their rights as guaranteed in the Constitution.”
Idris expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for providing an enabling environment for the Police to perform its constitutional functions.[myad]

IPOB Is Not A Big Issue For Buhari To Mention At UN, – Gov Akeredolu

Ondo State Governor, Akeredolu Rotimi
Ondo State Governor, Akeredolu Rotimi

Ondo state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu has said that President Muhammdu Buhari did not mention the issue of proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and the crisis it generated in the Southeast in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly because it was not a big issue for such a gathering.
“IPOB agitation is not something you escalate to the level of the United Nations for now. It’s something that you can contain. It something that you can contain within what I will call our territorial jurisdiction.
“Why escalate it to the United Nations? That means, it’s like us wanting to bring what…I mean, they (United Nations) know of it. It’s not that they don’t know of it but it’s not an issue for now and it will never be an issue in Nigeria for me as a person.[myad]
Governor Akeredolu, who is part of the President’s delegation to the annual event, told news men in New York today, Wednesday that the President deliberately skipped the IPOB issue because he would not want to escalate the crisis to the level of the world body, saying that it is a local issue that could be contained by local means.
“But when you talk about crises, a number of security concerns in Nigeria, what is happening from Chad and its effect on Nigeria and other neighbouring countries, the president mentioned it in his speech.
“The president also mentioned about Boko Haram and the assistance we have received. He did say something about countries that have assisted us. He mentioned their names and thanked them.
“So, it’s not that our security issues were not addressed or other issues were not addressed like security, corruption, that is more tied to our funds that are outside.
“So, all those things have something to do with the country. If you are retrieving monies from all these western world, it has something to do with the country.”
Governor Akeredolu described President Buhari’s speech at the gathering of world leaders as wonderful, saying that the highlight was Buhari’s call for the setting up of a UN delegation to interface with the North Korean leader,  Kim Jong-un, over the escalating nuclear crisis between his country and the United States.
“I did listen to the address and it was a wonderful speech, not too long, not too short either. It was just enough to cover the subject matter.
“The highlight of Mr. president’s speech for me was his reference to the United Nations to set up a committee or a delegation to meet with the North Korean president and to find a solution to this threat of nuclear proliferation.
“That was a wonderful thing and I think that was the highlight of it.
“But Mr. President’s speech had quite a lot of pluses and when again the president said we should not forget old crises and now jump trying to find solutions to new ones and made a reference to what we have had over the years; resolutions on Israel and Palestinians, that if we leave all those ones and keep jumping to other ones, you will never get a solution. So, those are very important points, highlights in his speech.”[myad]
