Senate President, Mischief Or Ignorance, By Yusuf Ozi-Usman

It was a rude shock for even the people in the South East to hear the Nigerian Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki accusing the nation’s army for declaring the Nnamdi Kanu led Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist group.
The shock was pronounced amongst the governors of the South East and that of Rivers State, who themselves have proscribed the same IPOB.
According to Senate Saraki, due process was not followed before IPOB was either declared terrorist group or proscribed.
When the news first filtered in that Senator Saraki said such thing, I dismissed it as the handiwork of his political enemies who were out to smear his hard earned names over the years.
But, coming to terms with the reality, one feels disturbed that Senator Saraki who had been silent all the while when Nnamdi Kanu and his IPOB have been threatening not to allow legitimate election held anywhere in the Southeast, including the one coming in Enugu shortly, suddenly appeared on the scene when IPOB was receiving the result of what it had planted.
In any case, what Senator Saraki implied was that IPOB was established legally and its activities were enshrined in the constitution: that it was constitutional for Nnamdi Kanu to flagrantly violate bail conditions and remain above the law.
That it was constitutional for Nnamdi Kanu to engage in using all sort of uncultured abusive words on President Muhammadu Buhari in particular and Nigeria in general.
In other words, when Senator Saraki said that the actions taken against the IPOB were unconstitutional, he was simply saying that the group had been operating constitutionally.
It was even more suspicious for Senator Saraki to fault the military in declaring IPOB as a terrorist group.
In addition to the reasons given by the military, what are the features of terrorists?
They threaten the peace and tranquillity of the neighbours : they constitute themselves into authority outside the legally recognised government, they train themselves in military service: they arm themselves with weapons such as stones, cutlasses, knives, guns, etc: they attack conventional security formations: they disobey the constituted authorities and operate a different form of government, etc.
Anybody in Nigeria in the last two years would agree that IPOB members have trod on these dangerous path. In fact, this is the same path that Boko Haram followed to the prolonged deadly battle that is still being fought in the Northeast. But Senator Saraki, who obviously has been around, did not raise a voice, even when the IPOB was threatening the foundation of this entity called Nigeria.
And he thinks, within his level of reasoning, that IPOB is not qualified to be called terrorists, even without any authority pronouncing it?
Habba Saraki!!!!!
I just hope that you are not one of those whom information minister, Lai Mohammed, fingered as sponsoring Nnamdi Kanu and his dangerous group?
Senator Saraki definitely cannot cry more than the bereaved, for, the South East governors and Rivers State governor that proscribed the group knew where the shoes pinch than him.[myad]

“To complement the efforts of the Nigerian Army, the Bama Initiative is being launched by the Federal Government.

Amidst the tension that built up in the wake of the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), six Governors from the North, led by the Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, Kashim Shettima, have paid a ‘peace-building’ visit to Abia State.
Among the northern governors that made the visit are Simon Lalong of Plateau State, Abubakar Sani of Niger State, and Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State.
Others are Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina State and Governor Atiku Bello of Kebbi State.
The governors, who arrived Umuahia, the Abia state capital today, Monday, held a meeting with the State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu.
Governors of the South East had hinted about the visit in their resolutions of Friday, which included the ban on the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra.
They had declared: “we are in touch with the Northern Governors Forum and they have assured us of the safety of all our people living in the North and we have also planned for exchange of visits between the governors. This is to reinforce the confidence of Nigerians in this regard.”
The resolutions were made during a five-hour meeting the South-East governors held at the Government House in Enugu over the increased tension in the South East and North which was fuelled by the activities of IPOB. and fears of attacks and counter-attacks on non-indigenes in both regions.
Rumours of attacks on non-indigenes in the South East had led to fears of counter-attacks on non-indigenes in the north.

A Look Into The Plight Of Rohingya Muslims As World Leaders Gather In New York, By Deen Adavize

UN General-Assembly Debate Section
UN General-Assembly Debate Section

Humans are all the same, religions do not make us different… We are all human and all born equal” – anonymous.

The gory images coming from Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar recently, would no doubt leave any human being feels uncomfortable. For a whole week, I deliberately refused to check on my social media platforms to avoid being assailed by the grotesque suffering of Rohingya people.
The former South African Archbishop Emeritus, Desmond Tutu shared the same feeling when he wrote a heartwarming letter to his friend, Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of Myanmar to speak against the injustice meted on the members of Rohingya Muslims.
In his words: “the images we are seeing of the suffering of the Rohingya fill us with pain and dread.
“As we witness the unfolding horror we pray for you to be courageous and resilient again.
“We pray for you to speak out for justice, human rights and the unity of your people.”
It is well known that Rohingya crisis is one of the world several unresolved challenges facing the international community.
The Rohingya people have persistently been driven out of their home in Myanmar by the Buddhists majority to the neighboring countries for what they described as illegal immigrants.
Available records revealed that the persecution of this minority group has a long and dark history in Myanmar. In the past, lawmakers and historians collaborated to destroy the legal status and historical evidence of Rohingya people as native of Burma, now Myanmar.
According to a historian, Rohingya and other ethnic Muslims were recognised as natives of Myanmar in the 1973 census, which recognised 143 ethnic groups in the country. Later, the 1982 citizenship law delisted Muslims from ethnic groups with the exception of the Kaman.
According to a wall street journal article, in 2012, more than 100 Rohingya Muslims were killed by rioting Rakhine Buddhists, while Tens of thousands of them were driven into Bangladesh. And nearly 150,000 were forced into camps in Rakhine.
The UNHCR reported that in 2014, some 150,000 Rohingya fled to neighbouring countries with a further 25,000 escaping in the first quarter of 2015.
Also in 2016, in an alleged attack by Rohingya militants, the army retaliated. More than 25, 000 Rohingya Muslims fled Rakhine state to the nearby Bangladesh to avoid being massacred.
In a similar incident recently, the Rohingya Muslims witnessed the worst ever inhumane treatment in the hand of Myanmar government in an alleged attack on security posts by Rohingya militants. At the time of writing this article, over 400, 000 Rohingya minority have fled to nearby Bangladesh, according to United Nations report. A catastrophic humanitarian crisis has befallen the Bangladesh government, calling for the international community to come to their aid as the country running out of food and healthcare to cater for the huge influx of Rohingya Muslims.
The greatest challenges of the crisis are for women and children who fled the country. According to UNICEF, there are at least 240,000 children among the refugees, including about 36,000 who are less than a year old. There were also 52,000 pregnant and lactating women.
Mohammed Soye, 33, a Rohingya who fled Bangladesh narrated the gruesome life of Rohingya people in the hand of Myanmar government:
“I was a farmer in Buthidaung township, just like every other Rohingya there. We did not have the right to work or the right to education so we could not get jobs in the police, military or other smart offices. We had to work on the farms, or collect bamboo from the forest.
“It was a hand-to-mouth existence, somehow, we survived even though we did not have any freedom – we just got through life, one day at a time.”
According to report and eyewitnesses, horrific violence in Myanmar, including extrajudicial killings, rape, kidnapping and torching property, has been taking place against the minority Muslims.
About 2,000 – 3,000 were killed and thousands other injured since the latest crisis began, according to the European Rohingya Council. But the Myanmar military officials admitted that about 400 fighters of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) killed.

Satellite imagery released by Amnesty International showed a scorched-earth destruction of Rohingya’s community, prompting accusations that the Myanmar authority is adopting what many describe as a “slow genocide” or better still “ethnic cleansing.”
But Myanmar government has denied the accusations, blaming the crisis on what they describe as illegal Islamic militants perpetrating an act of terrorism in Rakhine state. The authority also denied wide destruction of Rohingya community, claiming the fleeing Rohingyans set fire to their house while fleeing their houses. Myanmar government, however, refuses the media and international investigators into the country. Amnesty International described the evidence as irrefutable and said it was illustrative of crime against humanity.
As world leaders gather at United Nations headquarters, New York for the 72nd General Assembly session to deliberate the growing several challenges threatening the global peace and security, a deliberate and effective measure should be taken to permanently end the persistence persecution of the Rohingya Muslims minority in the Myanmar. The Myanmar government must be pressurized to allow a high power and unbiased united nation investigators into the country to access the immediate real causes of the recent wave of conflicts and level of damages done to the Rohingya ethnic minority.
The international community must speak with one voice to condemn the inhumane treatment of Rohingya people by Myanmar armed forces, which has created yet another world most humanitarian crisis in the Southeast Asia. A decisive sanction must be placed on any influential individual, official that is culpable in what UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein had described as “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing.”

IPOB Now Circulate Fake Videos Of Torture To Attract International Sympathy, Support, Information Minister Alleges

Information Minister, Alhaji Lai Mohammed
Information Minister, Alhaji Lai Mohammed

Nigerian information minister, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has drew the attention of Nigerians to a new method adopted by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), by circulating of videos showing how Igbos were tortured simply to attract the sympathy and support of the international communities.
The Minister, who addressed Online Publishers in Lagos today, Monday said: “we must warn the nation against IPOB’s next line of action, which is to externalize their lies and propaganda. Now they are writing to the governments and the national parliaments of some Western nations to give the impression that they are victims of an ethno-sectarian violence orchestrated by the government, hence they need protection.
“Some of the tools that have been employed by IPOB include blatant lies and cheap propaganda, and the medium of choice for the organization is the Social Media. IPOB has harvested gory videos and pictures from other lands and the distant past, which they are now circulating via the Social Media, to deceive the international community into believing that the people of the South-east are being subjected to state-sponsored, ethno-religious violence.
“Such videos, which have very high emotive quotient, are circulating on the Social Media as we speak. These videos are doctored to make them look current. They are fake!”
Lai Mohammed said that some ill-informed foreign individuals are already trumpeting IPOB’s lies and propaganda and even alleging genocide.
“It is either they do not understand the meaning of genocide or are being mischievous. Either way, there is nothing like genocide anywhere in our country today. “What we have in the South-east is a clampdown on a band of lawless people who have no regard for the laws of the land.”
He appealed to the Online Publishers to help counter the fake narrative on the Social Media on the situation in the South-east
“In the interest of the nation and your own interest, you must
counter this fake narrative, report the issues responsibly and without sensationalism and present the truth to the public. If the Social Media, your platform, is discredited because of the activities of quacks and Internet Trollers, you too will be discredited and your
publications will simply go down.
“That is why you must distinguish yourselves, as trained and tested
professionals, from the charlatans who have seized the Social Media by the jugular, those who have no regard for the truth and who do not care whether their fake posts set the nation ablaze.”
The Minister reiterated his earlier statement that IPOB is being sponsored by a coalition of politically-disgruntled and treasury looters and that the organization is a contraption against the Buhari Administration.[myad]

Falana To Obasanjo: Before Buhari Invites Nnamdi Kanu For Dialogue, You Must Apologize To Nigerians

Femi Falana
Femi Falana

A Lagos based human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has asked former President Olusegun Obasanjo who advised President Muhammadu Buhari to invite the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu to a dialogue, to first apologise to Nigerians over the deployment of the military to invade communities under his administration.
The lawyer, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), queried the moral standard of Obasanjo in asking President Buhari to negotiate with the embattled Nnamdi Kanu, saying that the administration led by the former President clamped down on agitators.
Obasanjo, had in a recent interview with the Newsweek Magazine, advised Buhari to negotiate with Kanu to curb the secessionist agitation instead of the deployment of soldiers in the South-East.
He said: “I don’t see anything wrong in that (Buhari meeting with Kanu). I would not object to that; if anything, I would encourage it. I would want to meet Kanu myself and talk to people like him; people of his age and ask, ‘What are your worries?”
Falana, in a statement titled: ‘IPOB Proscription and Hypocrisy of the Ruling Class,’ recalled that the Obasanjo-led administration detained and tried leaders of secessionist movements.
“In calling for a dialogue between President Buhari and Mr. Kanu, former President Obasanjo ought to have apologised publicly for the military invasions of Odi in Bayelsa State and Zaki Biam in Benue State ordered by him.
“The basis of the call should have been explained since President Obasanjo charged Niger Delta militants, leaders of ethnic militias and separatist movements with treason, which led to their prolonged detention in prison custody.
“Convinced that former President Obasanjo has realised that the criminalisation of such agitation did not achieve its objective, his suggestion for a dialogue should be seriously considered by President Buhari and the South-East governors.”
The activist lawyer also faulted former President Goodluck Jonathan for calling for a meeting of the Council of State to resolve the crisis caused by the secessionist group.
“For goodness sake, why was such a meeting not called before soldiers were deployed in the Niger Delta to deal with militants? Did President Jonathan call any meeting before deploying soldiers all over the country for the 2015 general elections in defiance of the judgments of the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal?
“Instead of suggesting irrelevant meetings, the root causes of the increasing loss of faith in the corporate existence of Nigeria by unemployed youths and other poverty-stricken people should be urgently addressed by the ruling class.
“As a matter of urgency, the underdevelopment of the nation caused by the mindless corruption and criminal diversion of public funds by unpatriotic public officers on our hapless people should be addressed.”
Falana called on the National Assembly to enact an enabling law as required by Section 217 of the Constitution on deployment of members of the armed forces by the President.

CBN Angry With Banks, Flood Forex With $545 Million

Isaac Okorafor CBN spokesman 1The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has threatened to sanction any Deposit Money Bank (DMB) in breach of its earlier directive of March 3, instructing them to, among other things, open teller points for retail forex transactions and to have electronic display boards in all their branches, showing rates of all trading currencies.
This is even as the apex Bank sustained its intervention in the various sectors of the inter-bank Foreign Exchange market with the injection of $545 million.
A circular issued by the Bank warned that the CBN would mete out stiff regulatory sanctions to banks that fail to comply fully with the directive by October 13.
The circular, signed by the Director, Banking Supervision, Ahmad Abdullahi, said that the Bank would bar erring DMBs from all future CBN foreign exchange interventions.
It will be recalled that the CBN in March 2017, directed banks and authorized dealers to open a teller point for retail FX transactions (PTA/BTA and SME), including buying and selling, in all locations in order to ensure access to foreign exchange by their customers and other users, without any hindrance.
The March 2017 circular also directed DMBs to have electronic display boards in all their branches, showing rates of all trading currencies, which it urged customers to insist on in processing their foreign exchange transactions for invisibles and the SMEs window.
While noting that the objective was aimed at creating awareness among members of the public regarding the availability of such facilities in branches of the banks at clearly disclosed prices, the CBN frowned at the banks for not fully complying with its directives.
Accordingly, the CBN has given the erring banks a four-week period, expiring on October 13, to fully comply with its directives or face regulatory sanctions, which it noted include but not limited to being barred from all future CBN foreign exchange interventions.
Meanwhile, giving a breakdown of the Bank’s latest forex injection, its Acting Director, Corporate Communications, Isaac Okorafor, revealed that the retail Secondary Market Intervention Sales (SMIS) received the largest intervention of $285 million. Other components of the released figures include the $100 million offered for wholesale SMIS, $90 million for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) window and $70 million for invisibles such as Basic Travel Allowances, tuition fees and medical payments.
According to Okorafor, the amount released underscored the CBN’s avowed commitment to ensure a liquid interbank foreign exchange market, where all genuine requests will be met in line with extant forex guidelines.
The CBN spokesperson expressed optimism that, with the accretion to the nation’s foreign reserve, the Bank would continue to fulfil its mandate of safeguarding the international value of the legal tender. He further disclosed that the Bank’s management also remained optimistic about achieving a convergence between the forex rates at both the inter-bank and BDC segments.[myad]

An Encounter With Soldier Who Fought Boko Haram For 9 Years, By Yusuf Ozi-Usman

Soldiers at war with Boko Haram

One of the heroes of the war against Boko Haram is a young man, a Corporal in the Nigerian Army, who has just been posted to the nation’s capital from the North East where he was in war front for over nine years.

The Corporal, whose name I prefer to keep to myself, was full of praises to God for keeping him alive from the gruelling battle with Boko Haram insurgents, even from the point of weak structures and none existent weaponry during the regime of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the centre, with particular reference to that of the immediate past government of President Goodluck Jonathan.

The soldier began to narrate the story immediately he settled in my car. I offered him a ride from one of the Abuja satellite towns to the main city, on his way to his place of posting.

After the normal introductions and initial small talks about the government of the day, the soldier, in mufti, said that he couldn’t believe that he would come out of the North East alive because of the intensity of the war.

The heroic soldier, who comes from one of the Northern states, said that he joined the army and was posted to the Northeast immediately the Boko Haram’s battle started around 2008.

He said that at various times, he was posted to different towns and villages, including Madagali, Mubi, Maiduguri and even Sambisa forest.

The soldier, who looked every inch satisfied with himself with gratitude to God, became sober, emphasising the fact that Nigerians should be grateful to President Muhammadu Buhari for saving Nigeria from Boko Haram insurgents whom he said, by now, would have simply taken over the government. According to him, the insurgents were so equipped and operating with high level of confidence that, it was easy for them to enter and conquer anywhere in Nigeria, including the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja.

“As a matter of fact, if the only thing Buhari has achieved in office is the decimation of Boko Haram and rendering the insurgents from power of occupying anywhere they targeted, Nigerians should be grateful to him. We would be offending God by remembering only our stomach, complaining of hunger as a result of Buhari’s policy, whereas the main issue of security which would have rendered us inured to hunger, is being downplayed.

He said that it was Buhari, who on coming to power, saved the sordid situation, where Nigerian army was reduced completely to the mercy of rampaging Boko Haram, by quickly arming them with weapons that were more superior.

“At a point before the 2015 general elections, we, the soldiers in the war front, were actually at the mercy of the insurgents. They had very sophisticated war weaponry, including modern tanks mounted on Hilux, while we, the soldiers, were using outdated weapons procured during the regime of President Shehu Shagari (from 1979 to 1983).

“In fact, I don’t thing Nigerian government acquired new weapons since the regime of Shagari because no such weapon was added to our war arsenals and or was brought to us in war front throughout the battle. We, in the war front were always wondering where the insurgents got the kind of modern and sophisticated weapons they were using against us.

“It was not that our men and officers were weak or inexperienced; these were the same Nigerian army that had been dispatched to war fronts on peacekeeping missions to other nations and conquered or performed excellently. The battle with Boko Haram insurgents was supposed to be a localised warfare that we could have won within weeks, but, it appeared as if we were fighting the power that was more than what our eyes were seeing.”

The young soldier expressed happiness not just because Boko Haram insurgents have been rendered powerless with the provision of sophisticated weapons by the Buhari government, but also because he is alive to witness the other end of the war.

Just when he was about to start analysing the consequences of such good news to the nation, we reached where he asked me to drop him, from where he would take a taxi to his place of work. [myad]

Information Minister Fingers Treasury Looters In Sponsorship Of IPOB

Information Minister, Alhaji Lai Mohammed
Information Minister, Alhaji Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said that the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is being sponsored treasury looters facing the anti graft agency and other disgruntled elements aimed at sabotaging the Muhammadu Buhari Administration.

“Nigerians must understand that IPOB was not set up to fight for the right of anyone or group, but as a tool to destabilise the nation, divert attention from the efforts of the Buhari Administration and obliterate the laudable achievements of the Government.”

The Minister who spoke to news men today, Sunday, in Lagos, said: “IPOB is being sponsored by those I will call the Coalition of the Politically Disgruntled and the Treasury Looters. They believe that by sponsoring this group to destabilise the country and trigger chaos, they will realise their ambition of escaping justice and then be free to dip their hands into the nation’s treasury again.”

Alhaji Mohammed wondered why the activities of IPOB became heightened with the advent of this Administration, saying: “If this is coincidental, then that coincidence is uncanny, at the least. “Remember that Nnamdi Kanu, who led a protest at the Nigeria House in London against Boko Haram insurgency and in support of Nigeria’s unity, under the Jonathan Administration, has suddenly metamorphosed into an IPOB monster who will rather set the nation ablaze.”

He said that IPOB thrived on exploiting the nation’s fault lines, and that its modus operandi is to trigger conflagration nationwide through attacks and reprisals.

“Thankfully, IPOB has failed in its evil machinations. The good people of Nigeria have seen beyond those cheap tactics and have avoided being incited against one another. We must remain vigilant and resolute. We must all say no to the incendiary and divisive tendencies of IPOB and its cohorts.”

The Minister commended the Nigerian military for labelling IPOB a terrorist organisation and for checkmating the group, and the Southeast Governors for proscribing the organisation.

“But for the military’s quick and decisive intervention, IPOB could have set the nation on fire. Thanks to the decisiveness of the military, today the governors of the states in the South-East have wisely proscribed IPOB.”

Alhaji Mohammed accused IPOB of harvesting gory videos from the distant past and from other lands to deceive the international community that the people of the Southeast are victims of state-sponsored ethno-sectarian violence, describing such tactics as “lies and propaganda.

“Such videos, which have very high emotive quotient, are circulating on the Social Media. We call on all to subject such videos to the greatest scrutiny so as not to be misled. In particular, we urge the international community not to jump to any conclusion on the basis of such videos.”

The Minister appealed to the media to show greater restraint and avoid sensationalism in their reporting of the military exercise, Operation Python Dance II, in the South-East.

“The divisive and jaundiced opinions of some anarchists have been given a big play by a section of the media. This is wrong. Let me remind all of us of the role of the media, especially the radio, in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda that left about 800,000 people dead.”

He said that the Nigerian media cannot afford to sit on the fence or engage in irresponsible journalism when the issue at stake is the very survival of the nation. [myad]
