Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has cautioned Nigerian youths not to wish him and other elder statesmen dead because they would continue to need them.
The former President, who spoke today, Sunday at the youth governance dialogue held by the Youth Development Centre of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun state said: “don’t wish us dead; don’t wish us to disappear because you will need us. You need us to mentor and prepare you for the future. You need our experience and assistance of some of us to guide you through life.
“You should not lose hope, you should not feel frustrated. Whenever I go abroad, they always ask me what my fear about Nigeria and Africa is, and I tell them my greatest fear is youth anger, frustrations and youth explosion which have no bound.
“We have the Boko Haram in the north, the MASSOB and IPOB in the south-east, the militants in the Niger Delta and the Oodua Peoples Congress in the south-west. All of these are the expression of anger and frustrations.”
Obasanjo, said that in the face of what he called the current frustration in the land, the youths should not to lose hope. [myad]
The Ahmed Makarfi-led People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has written off the two year old administration of President Muhammadu Buhari on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying that ther is nothing to celebrate.
The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP faction, Dayo Adeyeye, in a statement today, Sunday, said that the APC-led Government is marked by hand handedness, crass ineptitude and lack of tolerance for the opposition.
“APC has plunged the vast majority of the people into this two years of despondency, ambiguity, repressed and depressed condition and still ongoing.”
“Beginning with the issue of corruption in this discussion is critical in line with the APC/President Buhari’s ‘Change Agenda’ and ‘hype in corruption chase’ which has left sour taste given the dishonesty and charade that has characterized the actions of this Government so far.
“For the record, ‘corruption’ is endemic in our system since the Military era and using it to weep citizens’ sentiments is absurd while playing ignorant of honest achievements made by PDP Governments to combat this alarming menace.
“The Question is what has the APC done to fight corruption? Nothing! Yes indeed nothing except noise, hounding, torturing, flouting of court orders and vilification of opposition leaders and members in and out of courts/incarcerations without proving anything; harassments, intimidation, indiscriminate arrests and detention of Judges in order to cow them to desecrate the Judiciary and deny the people justice; promote Gestapo State and by extension, kill democracy.”
The PDP said that the APC had endangered democratic foundation laid by the PDP which enabled the opposition to win elections in the society, adding that the activities of the ruling APC were suggestive of a bleak democratic outing for the country in the 2019 elections. [myad]
A political group known as Coalition for Truth and Justice (CTJ), has described those who are agitating for the resignation of Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, as irresponsible.
The group, today, Sunday, said that the leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi State who asked the governor to resign over alleged double voter registration, are feasting on irrelevant issues, saying that their demand is “laughable, irresponsible and unbelievable.”
The group insisted that governor Yahaya Bello is going nowhere. He won’t resign.”
A statement by the National Coordinator of CTJ in Jos, the Plateau State capital, Dr. Charles Timothy, said that even when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) made the point that the double registration cannot affect the fortune of the governor, “some mischievous people who call themselves APC leaders have chosen to overlook that important point to feast on irrelevant issues.
“INEC has made it clear that voter education is one of its cardinal principles and that it is a continuous exercise as it cannot be done overnight. And some eager Nigerians are yet to understand the part that has to do with transfer of voting centres but have gone ahead to register again when they find themselves in new locations as was applicable under the old system.
“This was apparently what happened to Bello hence the circumstance is devoid of any untoward intention. But these few Kogi APC leaders prefer to expose their ignorance by acting beyond their limits and assuming a position that is way beyond their powers.” [myad]
Former Lagos State governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) national stalwart, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has asked Nigerians not to fall asleep so as not to give chance to enemies of democracy to over-run them.
“We must remember that should we fall asleep, there are those who would like nothing better than to take it from us.”
In a message on the occasion of this year’s Democracy Day and 2nd year of President Muhammadu Buhari administration, Tinubu said Nigerians should remain vigilant and “by doing so ensure a better future and better Nigeria for ourselves and our progeny.”
The APC national leader said: “Democracy Day and our commemoration of it must be more than an empty ritual. It must add up to more than another reason to have another holiday.
“We, as a people, choose democracy as our preferred form of governance not because it would be easy to achieve or to hold even once we have it. We choose democracy because history has taught us that the welfare of the people is best and perhaps only secured by government responsive and accountable to the people. This can only be democracy.
“Many Nigerians have fought and sacrificed to enshrine democracy as our way of governance. We mark this day in honour of these people many of whom laboured in obscurity and without proper thanks to achieve this precious thing for the nation.
“We mark this day to keep in remembrance that we must not take this good form of government for granted. We must keep and nurture it, not for democracy’s sake but for our own sake. We must remember that should we fall asleep, there are those who would like nothing better than to take it from us. We must remain vigilant and by doing so ensure a better future and better Nigeria for ourselves and our progeny.
“Thus, I congratulate Nigerians on this day. I congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari and urge him and his administration to continue to do all it can to protect and improve our democratic way of life.
“I wish all Nigerians a happy Democracy Day.” [myad]
A 33 year old man, Oswald Mukando, who was allegedly caught having sex with a neighbour in the toilet told a Local Court in Lusaka, Zambia that he warned his wife that she will hear that he made love with a neighbour because she denies him conjugal rights.
Mukando, of Garden House compound was testifying in a case in which his wife, Rita Ntalasha, 25, a Security Officer sued him for divorce.
However, Mukando said that he still loves his wife, Ntalasha.
Ntalasha told Senior Court Magistrate Mubukwanu Matakala sitting with Magistrate Abbyshine Michelo at Kanyama Local Court that Mukando has been accusing her of having boyfriends and that in 2012 and 2016 they went on separation.
She explained that last month when she came from Mumbwa, she overheard the landlord complaining that Mukando will bring bad luck by making love in the toilet.
“When I confronted the neighbour who was making love with Mukando, she admitted and asked for forgiveness. On April 16, 2017, Mukando said that his girlfriend is carrying his child and he even boasted that he can do whatever he wanted because his father married seven wives. I sued him for divorce because I don’t want to be in polygamy,’’ said Ntalasha.
The Deputy President of the Senate, Chief Ike Ekweremadu and Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. David Umahi, have again appealed to Biafra agitators calling for a sit-at-home compliance on Tuesday to allow people to go about their normal business.
Ekweremadu and Umahi made the appeal during an Interdenominational church service organized by the Ebonyi State Government to mark this year’s Democracy Day in Abakaliki.
They said that bad approach to genuine struggle was not good, encouraged the Igbo to work in unity in order to achieve their aim irrespective of how long it takes.
Ekweremadu said: “On the issue of IPOB and stay at home order, I just have one advice. You cannot have two governments in a state. If anybody says you should stay at home, if you are a trader you can choose to stay at home or go out. But if you are a civil or public servant ,you are under obligation to go to work.
“I addressed the World Igbo Congress in Enugu and I told them that we all condemn the marginalisation of our people. We can never support it and we will continue to fight against it wherever we find ourselves. It is our life but I advise that no one or group should engage in any arm struggle no matter the level of provocation. The idea of trying to force people to do your will, I don’t think it’s right.
“Those who want to stay at home should please stay at home but those who want to work should be allowed to go out. I believe that if we have a struggle which I believe we have, it may take us a long time to get there but surely, no matter how long the darkness is, the day will eventually break.”
A statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Emma Anya, quoted the Senate Deputy President as commending Umahi for his infrastructural development and the mature way he has piloted the affairs of Ebonyi State, adding that the state has changed for good.
In his remarks, Governor Umahi said he had directed that markets should be opened on Tuesday and that residents should feel free to go about their lawful business
He condemned the idea of asking people to stay at home and advised IPOB members to embrace dialogue rather than pursuing their genuine struggle the wrong way.
Governor Umahi said that the leaders of South-East were handling the concerns of IPOB, assuring that efforts to solve the problem would soon materialize.
“Let me say it: I have all the lists of their agitations and most of what they are saying are correct but the way they are saying it may not be correct. I met with the market people yesterday (Friday) and I said our market will remain open on 30th of May.
“The governors of South-East are not noise makers behind the scene, we are tackling our problem with National Assembly members and our other leaders and I’m very sure that the modest effort we are making is fast yielding result. We believe that we can win this war not through violence but through persuasion and dialogue and understanding.”
The governor appreciated the state executive members, the legislators and the Judiciary for their commitment to service delivery.
In his sermon, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Religion and Welfare Matters and the Chairman Christian Association of Nigeria, Ebonyi State Chapter, Very Rev. Fr. Abraham Nwali, eulogized the governor for his achievements within two years in office.
Dignitaries who attended the church service include former Governor of the state, Senator Sam Egwu; Senator Obinna Ogba; Chief Judge Aloy Nwankwo and heads of security agencies in the state. [myad]
Civil servants in Ebony state will henceforth sit for examinations to qualify for promotion to the position of Permanent Secretaries.
Already, the state governor, Engineer David Nweze Umahi has directed the state Head of Service, Dr. Chamberlain Nwele, to commence the process of conducting the examination.
A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, said that the exams would help the government to select the best hands to drive its developmental policies.
The governor spoke after the ministries and some departments in the state made live television and radio presentations of the activities in the past two years at the Abakaliki Township Stadium.
Governor Umahi said that each of the 13 local government areas in the state would produce a permanent secretary to ensure equity in the appointment of civil servants.
“I want to ask Head of Service to go ahead with a committee to set written examination for all those that want to be permanent secretaries. They have to write the exam and you will mark it and the best in each LGA will emerge as Permanent Secretary. There will be no lobbying for it. It has to be the best person who has the vision of his ministry. The aspirants will go through about three different kinds of tests. They will not be tested by only one body.”
He observed that there was poor attendance of civil servants at the event and directed that they should queue behind their commissioners in subsequent presentations.
“It is very unfortunate that many civil servants are not here. Next time we do it, all the civil servants will come and stand behind their commissioners to do your presentations.”
The governor, who applauded the Commissioners for their efforts to deliver on their mandate, pointed out that the public deserved to know the extent of their achievements.
In her presentation, the Commissioner for Water Resources, Mrs. Euphemia Nwali, assured the people of the state that the ministry would commence pumping of water from Oferekpe water scheme to Abakaliki capital city next month.
On his part, the Commissioner for Works and Transport, Engr. Fidelis Nweze, said that construction work on Nkalagu-Umuhuali-Ehamufu road would be completed and inaugurated before the end of this year.
Other members of the state executive council, including the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Benard Odoh, reiterated their commitment to make life more meaningful to Ebonyi people through their service. [myad]

“I caught my husband in a hotel having sex with Evelyn Etim, a member of our church. As I speak to you, Evelyn has given birth to a baby boy and she is living in Eket with my husband.”
These were the revelations by Mrs. Idongesit Ese, wife of the founder and pastor of Kairos Rhema Embassy in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital, Pastor Nsikanabasi Ese.
Mrs. Ese openly informed worshippers that her husband was not just living an adulterous life but had impregnated a female member of the church.
Though she was prevented from entering the auditorium of Kairos Rhema Embassy when she arrived at the church to make the matter public, but she stood at the church premises to tell her story, saying: “I want every man and woman who has conscience in this church to ask my husband why he is doing this to me; why would he be sleeping with a young girl who came to seek counseling and prayers from him?”
Mrs. Ese, at a point, brought out photos from her handbag and showed the church members to buttress her points, saying: “that’s when my husband; so called man of God, beat me and hit me with his car and ran away with Evelyn Etim when I caught them in the hotel.”
She also displayed a photo of a young woman whom she said was that of the alleged intruder, Evelyn Etim, saying: “I want members of the church to know why I haven’t been attending programmes in the church.
“Many people have been calling my telephone line to inform me that my husband lied to the congregation that I traveled out of the country.
“This is the moment of truth. Let the people know what has been going on in my marriage and in the church…. I believed and trusted this man with my whole life. I am still asking myself one question, is this the same man who once woke me up late in the night, stood stark naked before me, poured anointing all on his head and swore that God should destroy him and his ministry the day he sleeps with any woman other than his wife!”
Mrs. Ese said that she was pregnant for the pastor but that the baby died mysteriously in her womb two days to delivery some three years ago. [myad]
A global technology failure at British Airways led to delays, airport congestion and flight cancellations for thousands of customers at London area airports today, Saturday.
The problems began at about 7 a.m. local time and by late afternoon, the airline had canceled all Saturday flights departing from Heathrow and Gatwick airports.
In a statement, the airline cited “a major I.T. system failure that is causing severe disruption to our flight operations worldwide.”
The glitch affected the airline’s check-in and operational systems, including call centers, the airline’s chief executive, Alex Cruz, said in a video on Saturday.
“Our I.T. teams are working tirelessly to fix the problems,” Mr. Cruz added. “We believe the root cause was a power supply issue, and we have no evidence of any cyberattack.”
British Airways urged passengers with tickets for Saturday flights not to go to Heathrow or Gatwick, in an effort to ease congestion. Customers already at the airports posted photos and videos of long lines and crowded terminals.
The airline warned that delays could continue into Sunday. “We are working hard to get our customers who were due to fly today onto the next available flights over the course of the rest of the weekend,” British Airways said in a statement. “Those unable to fly will be offered a full refund.”
The shutdown affected systems around the world, but British Airways flights could still depart from other airports where staff members were able to “find a workaround,” for example, by checking in passengers manually, a spokeswoman said.
The airline faced a similar situation in September, when a glitch affected check-in systems and caused delays at multiple international airports.
The malfunction on Saturday came at the beginning of a bank holiday weekend, when the number of travel bookings was higher than usual.
“We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience this is causing our customers during this busy holiday period,” the airline said in its statement. [myad]
