Italy Fines Mobile Message Service, WhatsApp, 3 Million

whatsapp

Italy has fined a U.S.-based mobile messaging service, WhatsApp, three million Euros (about 3.3 million dollars) on Friday for what it called insufficient transparency on data sharing with its parent company, Facebook.

WhatsApp was taken over by Facebook in 2014 and two years later, it introduced new terms of service and privacy policies that gave Facebook access to WhatsApp users’ data.

Italy’s Antitrust Regulator — AGCM — said in a statement that “the opportunity for WhatsApp users to refuse the handover of data to Facebook was available `but it was inadequately flagged.”

The regulator also criticised WhatsApp for introducing “unfair clauses” to its term of service, such as giving the company the right to cut off services or start charging customers without warning.

In December, the European Commission, which regulates antitrust matters in the EU, launched an investigation into Facebook’s conduct prior to the WhatsApp buyout.

The EU executive accused Facebook of misleadingly telling the commission that it could not smoothly integrate its own users’ data with that of WhatsApp.

However, Facebook denied any wrongdoing and promised to explain its actions.

The commission said it could slap a fine of up to 1 per cent of annual turnover, around 280 million dollars, if it is not satisfied by the internet giant’s answers.

WhatsApp, was incorporated in 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum, both former employees of Yahoo!. After Koum and Acton left Yahoo! in September 2007, the duo traveled to South America as a break from work.

At one point they applied for jobs at Facebook but were rejected.

WhatsApp 2.0 was released with a messaging component and the number of active users suddenly increased to 250,000.

WhatsApp Inc., based in Mountain View, California, was acquired by Facebook in February 2014 for approximately US$19.3 billion.

By February 2016, WhatsApp had a user base of over one billion, making it the most popular messaging application at the time.

Nigeria Labour Congress In Nasarawa Thrown Into Disarray Over Strike

nass-workers-protest

The Nasarawa State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has been thrown into disarray over an industrial action in the state, as the chairman of the Congress was sacked and he refused to be intimidated.

Members of the NLC chapter in the state had impeached the chairman, Adeka Abdullahi and replaced him with Umar Bala, who was vice chairman, saying that the sacked chairman wanted the congress to suspend action on a week ultimatum the union gave to the state government to meet workers demands.

It was gathered that Abdullahi’s reason calling for the suspension of action on the strike was hinged on the fact that negotiations are ongoing with the government, which did not go down well with members who felt the government did not take their ultimatum seriously.

This is even as his deputy, who now took over the mantle of leadership, said that Abdullahi was sacked because members had lost confidence in him.
“Since we came on board, honestly, we have not achieved anything as a labour in Nasarawa State. We keep on signing agreements with the government and they keep on failing.
“The former chairman was removed because we do not have confidence in him and he has been wining and dining with the government. That is why we cannot have respected before the government.

“We urge the government to act fast to our demands or else we will be left with no option to see what we can do; the struggle has just begun. Workers in Nasarawa State have suffered a lot, they have a setback.”

However, Adeka Abdullahi insisted that the strike action should be suspended as the negotiations are ongoing.

“I want to assure the workers of Nasarawa State that they should remain dogged, they should remain loyal to the presiding officer led by Abdullahi Adeka. I still remain the chairman of NLC in Nasarawa State and I am not shaken by any group of persons that can just sit down and think that they can plan a palace coup that will not yield any fruitful result.”

Workers in Nasarawa State are, however, still on strike with offices under lock and key except for health workers who refused to join the strike.

Meanwhile, the Head of Service has issued a press statement instructing workers to go about their normal duties and ignore any directive from the Umar Bala-led faction.

“It is hereby reiterated that any civil servants that do not adhere to this directive and fails to report to duty will be held personally liable for his/her action,” he added.

“Permanent secretaries and chief executives of commissions, boards and parastatals are therefore to ensure compliance by opening and maintaining attendance register for their staff and submit same at the close of work on a daily basis to the permanent secretary, civil service secretariat, office of the head of civil service as any absenteeism will be treated as abscondment.” [myad]

Any Worker Not Paid Salary Has Issues To Clear, Kogi Governor Clarifies

Yahaya Bello Gov 3

“Whatever noise we are hearing now is either by those who are yet to be cleared or those who have benefited from the system of inefficiency in the past.

“Anyone who has been certified cleared has been paid salary. To prove our point, we published the names and amounts paid to all workers, ministries, departments and agencies in the state’s website, www.kogistate.gov.ng.”

The governor of Kogi state, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, who made these clarifications through his media aide, Gbenga Olorunpomi in a chat with news men in Abuja today, Thursday, insisted that no civil servant is being owed salary and that the government had paid the salaries of all workers cleared by the recently concluded civil servants verification exercise.

“This government came to power at the time civil servants were on strike; the issue that led to the strike was that of the salaries owed to the workers for many months.

“At that time, all schools in the state were shut down; the government of Governor Yahaya Bello then decided that the only way to tackle this was to do total civil service verification. In the process, we found out that the state had plenty issues; about 83,000 personnel were withdrawing salaries from the state and this is a state that is barely 25 years old.

“So, there was need to do an audit to find out how we got to the situation where there were more senior than junior level civil servants; it was lopsided, the issues necessitated the civil service reform which is part of the five cardinal programmes of the government.”

Olorunpomi said that the exercise had been completed and the state now has a civil service that the government can manage, saying: “all persons that were cleared by whatever committee that was set up at the time were paid. We got our bailout fund to do this. We used the resources that came in from FAAC allocation and we have been paying salaries since then.”

It will be recalled that medical doctors iin the service of the state government have embarked on strike action on the excuse that they have not been paid their salaries for months, with man of them threatening to resign their appointments with the state government. [myad]

Don’t Allow Mischief Makers Pitch You Against Buhari, Northern Elders Counsel Osinbajo

Ango Abdullahi

“We urge him to ignore mischief makers who seek to pitch him against the President or the Nigerian people whose mandates they both exercise.”

This is the advice which the Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF) offered Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, against the backdrop of the recent misinterpretation given to the letter which President Muhammadu Buhari transmitted to the Senate about his journey for follow-up medical consultation in London.

In a communiqué issued at the end of its two-day emergency meeting in Kano today, Thursday, the Northern Elders Forum also warned those seeking undeserved political advantage to desist from such moves, adding that  the North is conscious of its obligations and rights and will not hesitate to discharge and defend them without reservations.

The communiqué which was signed by NEF Deputy Leader, Chief Wantaregh Paul Unongo and its Spokesman, Professor Ango Abdullahi, said the group is aware that attempts are being made to exploit the absence of President Buhari to achieve dubious political goals.

The Forum advised Osinbajo to “exercise responsibilities as he did in the past with commitment, sensitivity and respect for the constitution.

“The task of governing the nation will continue uninterrupted until the return of President Buhari. We therefore appeal to all persons with responsibility to cooperate fully to sustain a united, focused and committed administration.

“While commending the sterling contributions of Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, in providing the necessary leadership to stabilize the polity, we appeal to the executive and legislative arms of government to work together to pass the 2017 budget without further delay.”

The Forum expressed full support for the ongoing campaign against corruption in the country, saying: “we also expect that the war against corruption will not suffer a setback and current investigations and activities will not be stalled due to the absence of President Buhari.” [myad]

Gov Al-Makura Signs MoU With Chinese Firm On Fertilizer Blending

Almakura

Governor Umar Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Chinese firm in order to improve the agricultural base of the state.

The governor said at the signing: “we want to make vocation out of that and create employment opportunities because given the bulk of raw materials of fertilizer blending imported from Morroco, every state is having large bulk of such fertilizer raw materials and Nasarawa State is supposed to have about 20,000 metric tons, with that we would be able to have much more than we require for our use.

“It simply follows that we would be able to be making some businesses out of fertilizer blending after supplying our farmers, that is why we have to ensure we have the right type of equipment rather than depending on the decayed one that we already have in the state that works haphazardly.

“With this procurement of four different categories of fertiliser blending equipment from this year, Nasarawa State will be self-sufficient in fertiliser production for the state and beyond.”

The firm is expected to provide fertilizer blending equipment for the upgrade of the state fertiliser blending company in order to boost production and ensure that the product is sufficient for farmers. [myad]

“It is certainly not going to be business as usual in the conduct of the Board’s examination and other processes.

“In line with this resolution, the Board had secured through diligent prosecution, the conviction of two Nigerians who forged the Board’s results and came around for verification.

“At the moment, we have lodged complaints against a number of Computer-Based Test, CBT, centre owners for one infraction or the other and a number of them were arrested, cautioned, while others are to be prosecuted so as to serve as a deterrent to others”, he added.

The JAMB boss warned candidates not to fall for the ploy of fraudsters who he said were out to defraud them.

He pointed out a case at the Federal Government Science Technical College, Orozo,Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, where somebody was sending bulk messages to candidates to come and reprint their slips claiming to be from JAMB. [myad]
