Presidential Fertilizers Initiative Produces 4,000 Metric Tonnes – Presidency

Laolu Akande of VP MediaThe Presidential Fertilizers Initiative of the Buhari Administration has started yielding results, with the production of more than 4,000 metric tonnes of locally-blended fertilizers in the first week of operation.
This was contained in a statement by the senior special assistant to the acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, on media and publicity, Laolu Akande.
Akande recalled that the initiative was approved by President Muhammadu Buhari in December last, with the aim of achieving local production of one million metric tonnes of blended Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium (NPK) Fertilizers for the 2017 wet season farming.
He recalled also that before December 2016, Nigeria’s stock of blended Fertilizers was shipped into the country as fully-finished products, even though Urea and Limestone, which constitute roughly two-thirds of the component of each bag, are available locally.
“The objective of the Presidential Initiative is to procure the 4 constituent raw materials for NPK Fertilizers – locally-sourced Urea, locally-sourced Limestone granules (LSG), Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) imported from Morocco, and Muriate of Potash (MOP) sourced from Europe – and blend these locally to produce NPK Fertilizers at a much reduced cost.
“The finished products will be delivered to Nigeria’s farmers at a starting price of about ₦5,500 per bag, compared to the ₦8,000 – ₦9,000 cost of imported fertilizers.
“The Presidential Fertilizers Initiative will achieve the following:
1. Stimulate local production of NPK Fertilizers by resuscitating moribund fertilizers plants, and reviving the local blending Fertilizers industry
2. Make Fertilizers available to Nigerian farmers at affordable prices and in time for the 2017 wet season farming,
3. Result in projected savings of US$200 million in foreign exchange, and ₦60 billion in budgetary provisions for Fertilizers subsidy.
4. Enhance food security as a result of the expected increase in food production
5. Reduce food-induced inflation and stimulation of economic activities across the agriculture value chain
6. Create thousands of direct and indirect jobs,
“The Presidential Fertilizers Initiative is being executed by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) through a Special Purpose Vehicle that will roll out the one million tonnes of NPK Fertilizers in 5 batches of 200,000 metric tonnes each.”
Akande said that production of the first batch is expected to be completed by the end of March.
“Beyond the broader goal of ensuring food security for the country by providing high-grade fertilizers to enhance harvest in the 2017 farming season, the Buhari Administration is by this initiative reinforcing its commitment to reviving and diversifying the economy, and creating growth, through a focus on agriculture.” [myad]

James Ayatse: From Ivory Tower To Royalty, By Emmanuel Yawe

tor-tiv-prof-jamesIt was Dr. Philip Afaha, a senior lecturer at the Department of History and Diplomatic Studies, University of Abuja, who once said: “the Tiv people made me proud. They have shown that it is possible to create a culture and they did that in our generation. Instead of just abdicating their authority to any herbalist in the land, or off-springs of Colonial-imposed rogues, the Tiv created their Kingship. Not so long ago, they crafted the rules, deliberated and came up with the most educated traditional ruler in the world. Culture is not necessarily what we are compelled to do, far from it. It is also what we chose to do. In other kingdoms it is the most diabolic and feared person that is the king. The Tiv have made a statement; they don’t bow to fear, they would rather bow to knowledge. Long live the Tor Tiv.”
In the 70s, most students of northern origin seeking university admission applied to Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. It was the university established by the defunct northern region and naturally gave priority to applicants from the region.
A few of us from the north decided to differ. There was a university established in Ibadan, the capital city of the defunct western region. It was the first Nigerian university, established during the colonial era which also proudly advertised itself as the best. Each year, it carefully screened applicants for admission and selected the best students all over Nigeria to admit and matriculate. That was the university we applied to; that was the university that gave us admission. To Ibadan we went.
James Ortese Ayatse was one the few brilliant students from the north to matriculate as a student of the first and the best university in Nigeria in 1975. He was just one of us, the few northern students and even fewer Tiv students to matriculate in Ibadan that year. The next four years proved to be a wrenching ordeal as we struggled to obtain the celebrated meal ticket called a university degree.
We were all from very poor families. In fact without the government scholarship which covered our tuition, feeding, clothes and books – it never went above Five Hundred Naira per annum – many of us could not have survived the ordeal. As meager as the scholarship money was, some of us still used it to pay the school fees of our junior ones in secondary and primary schools.
To compound our problems, without a bridge across the Niger, the road to Ibadan then was winding. There were two routes; you went through Onitsha by one of the “buses” going to Lagos. What was called a bus then from Gboko to Lagos was actually a lorry – gongoro – built with the body looks of a bus. The sitting arrangement was terrible. Sometimes you sat with your back to where the bus was headed. The passengers were mostly lower rank soldiers, their wives, children and livestock – live chicken, goats and pigs. The stench in those contraptions cannot be described.
There was a second route. You could go through Shintaku, cross over to Lokoja and catch a taxi to Ibadan. There was no bridge in Lokoja at that time so we ended up crossing the confluence of rivers Benue and Niger at Lokoja by boat. On one of such trips, I almost got drowned with Joseph Akaanan, my friend and fellow student when our engine canoe malfunctioned and the boat almost capsized.
As if these problems were not enough, in our final year in 1978, General Olusegun Obasanjo decided to triple the cost of food on all university campuses. The students reacted with demonstrations and for the first time in Nigerian history, armed soldiers were unleashed on the campuses. They then proceeded to shoot and kill unarmed students abundantly from Lagos to Zaria. Most of us who survived it decided that if this was what getting a university education in Nigeria meant, we had seen enough of it.
One of the young Tiv lads who graduated from the University of Ibadan in 1979, James Ayatse had good reason to think differently from us. In the department of Biochemistry where he took a degree, he was the best graduating student. To him, the arcane world of the university was home.
Ayatse went ahead to obtain an MSc at the University of Calabar in 1982, where again he was the best graduating student that year. By then, he had caught the attention of the Commonwealth of Nations who gave him a scholarship to study at the University of Surrey, England for a Phd in Biochemistry.
Back to the University of Calabar, he became a Professor of Biochemistry in 1990 and added an MBA to it in 1992. His resume in the university system is most impressive. He was at different times the head, Department of Chemistry Benue State University, Makurdi, Director of Academic Planning, Benue State University and Member, Institute of Biology, Chartered Biologist, United Kingdom, as well as Institute of Medical Laboratory Science, United Kingdom and member, New York Academy of Science, USA.
He has capped it up all with the fact that he is the only Tiv man who has ever been appointed the Vice Chancellor of two Federal Universities – the Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi and Federal University of Technology Dutsima in Katsina State.
Those of us who took our first university degree with James Ayatse thought we had donated him permanently to the academic world. His seamless transition from the ivory tower to royalty makes us all very proud of him. May the reign of the new Begha u Tiv be very long. [myad]

Nigerian Development Bank To Address Low Financing Of SMEs – Minister

kemi-adeosun-4Nigeria Finance minister, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun has said that the Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN) is being positioned to address the lingering low financing of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises sector in the country.
The Minister, who spoke at a retreat for DBN’s Board, Management and Development partners in Abuja today, Monday, noted with concern that Nigeria’s financing of SMEs is far below what other countries put up.

Henceforth, We’ll Go After Hate Speech Promoters, DSS Warns

SSSThe Department of State Security (DSS), has warned that its men and officers will henceforth arrest and detain any Nigerian, no matter his position in the society, who promotes hate speech.

The secret police also sounded a note of warning to persons and groups in Nigeria that it will no longer tolerate any acts of lawlessness by those who ought to be law abiding and responsible citizens.
“The Service has also observed with total dismay the inciting utterances of some political actors whose activities heat-up the polity. It also wishes to express its disappointment with these politicians who, in their desperation, are engaged in hate speeches and even sponsorship of radio campaign jingles when the electoral umpire has not authorized such campaigns in line with the Electoral Act.”
The Security outfit, in a statement signed by Tony Opuiyo, expressed worry over what it called: “the unpatriotic involvement of some media outfits in these divisive tendencies which negate their constitutional role as the fourth estate of the realm.”
It said that in line with its statutory mandate of maintaining the peace and internal security of the country, it would not abdicate its commitment to go after anyone, no matter how highly placed, “who engages in acts capable of causing the breach of peace in the country.” [myad]

Obasanjo Acknowledges: Buhari Has Excelled In War Against Corruption, Boko Haram

obj-2Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that President Muhammadu Buhari has so far done his best to save Nigeria from corruption and insecurity, even as he asked for continuous prayers for the country to get things right.
In a chat with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at his hilltop residence in Abeokuta, Obasanjo said that so far President Buhari has not disappointed him since he assumed office in 2015.
He said the president had delivered on his core areas of strength and ability, particularly in the anti-corruption crusade and the war against Boko Haram insurgency.
“In my book, I have said that Buhari is not strong on the economy and I did not write this to run him down. Whatever anybody says, President Buhari has not disappointed me from what I know of him.”
Obasanjo said that Buhari should not be blamed so much because “he is not strong in the area of foreign affairs, but I have realised that he has improved very well.
“He has actually done his best in the areas where we know him to be strong.”
The elder statesman asked Nigerians not to relent in their support for Buhari and not to give up on Nigeria.
“Whatever you might see as bad in Nigeria, other societies have gone through the same at some period in their history.
“It is not for us to begin to condemn but to begin to join hands together and consider how we can make the best out of our present.
“Our present situation is a passing phase and we need to be resilient to ensure that we are not consumed by it.
“I will be the first to admit that we have not been where we should have been, but note that we have also been far from where we could have been because it could have been worse.
“It is the height of ingratitude for people to say Nigeria has not achieved anything or much as a nation.
“The generation before mine fought for Nigeria’s independence, that is great.
“My own generation, which is the next, fought to sustain the unity of Nigeria.
“Since 1999, Nigeria had enjoyed 18 years of unbroken democracy.
“We witnessed in 2007 a transition of power from one individual to another in the same party.
“We witnessed in 2015 a transition of power from an individual in the ruling party to another individual in the opposition party.
“All these should not be taken for granted.”
Obasanjo decried the call for national conferences or assemblies to negotiate the continued unity of Nigeria.
The former president who, described such conferences as distractions, said he did not bother to read the report of the last one organised by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
”We Nigerians need ourselves and if anyone thinks he does not need another person, good luck to him.
“What I see in all those groups trying to break away is that they want more of the national cake.
“The fact that you want more of the cake means that it is good and you like it, else you will not be asking for more of it.
“I do understand the agitations of the youths in that the increased facilities that now exist as against our own time have not translated to adequate opportunities for them.
“But I think that rather than engage in violence, they should think of how to build on the sacrifices of the generations before them.”
The elder statesman, who would turn 80 on March 5, said he had no regrets at such an age.
He said that his hope that Nigeria would still be a great nation is still intact.

2007 Nelson Mandela’s View On Nigeria… For Record

Nelson-Mandela“You know I am not very happy with Nigeria. I have made that very clear on many occasions. Yes, Nigeria stood by us more than any nation, but you let yourselves down, and Africa and the black race very badly. Your leaders have no respect for their people. They believe that their personal interests are the interests of the people. They take people’s resources and turn it into personal wealth. There is a level of poverty in Nigeria that should be unacceptable. I cannot understand why Nigerians are not more angry than they are.
What do young Nigerians think about your leaders and their country and Africa? Do you teach them history? Do you have lessons on how your past leaders stood by us and gave us large amounts of money? You know I hear from Angolans and Mozambicans and Zimbabweans how your people opened their hearts and their homes to them. I was in prison then, but we know how your leaders punished western companies who supported Apartheid.
“What about the corruption and the crimes? Your elections are like wars. Now we hear that you cannot be president in Nigeria unless you are Muslim or Christian. Some people tell me your country may break up. Please don’t let it happen.
“Let me tell you what I think you need to do. You should encourage leaders to emerge who will not confuse public office with sources of making personal wealth. Corrupt people do not make good leaders. Then you have to spend a lot of your resources for education.
“Educate children of the poor, so that they can get out of poverty. Poverty does not breed confidence. Only confident people can bring changes. Poor, uneducated people can also bring change, but it will be hijacked by the educated and the wealthy…give young Nigerians good education. Teach them the value of hard work and sacrifice, and discourage them from crimes which are destroying your image as a good people.”
