Ekiti House Of Assembly Issues Warrant Of Arrest On Ex Gov Fayemi

Governor Kayode Fayemi
Kayode Fayemi

The Ekiti State House of Assembly has issued a warrant of arrest on former Governor of the state, and currently, the nation’s minister mines ans stell development, Kayode Fayemi over alleged corruption.

The assembly had on Thursday last week, summoned Fayemi to appear before it today, Tuesday to defend himself, threatening to issue a warrant of arrest. But the minister failed to honour the invitation, making the assembly to make good its threat.

The assembly said that pursuant to Section 129(1) (d) of the 1999 Constitution, it has ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibahim Idris, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Wilson Inalegwu and other security agencies, including international Police to immediately arrest the serving Minister.

The decision was taken at the plenary through a resolution by the lawmakers.

Addressing journalists in Ado Ekiti today, Tuesday, Speaker Kola Oluwawole; the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Dr. Samuel Omotoso and the Leader, Tunji Akinyele, said the summon was to enable the minister to defend the allegations.

Omotoso recalled that the assembly had earlier summoned the former governor on March 10 and August 27, 2016 with a reminder on January 30, 2017, which were declined by Fayemi.

“During Governor Kayode Fayemi’s government, he awarded a N304m contract for planting of flowers for urban renewal project in Ado Ekiti. Over 50% of the contract sum had been paid but there is no single flower anywhere.

“The former governor also purchased 133 vehicles for royal fathers. The vehicles were given out in August 2013 and the contract papers were done in November. This was a clear case of misappropriation.

“He also paid N24m for the construction of Awedele Market. The money was paid to a phoney company and no construction was seen. The most disturbing was that, eight days to the expiration of his tenure, Fayemi withdrew a sum of N852m from University Basic Education Commission account which he was not a signatory to and diverted to other areas we could not trace.

“The former governor also paid a sum of N115m for the construction of a new Governor’s office. But no structure was put in place as we speak. The same was witnessed in the construction of the State Pavilion, the governor’s lodge and the 5km road projects, where billions were diverted. He even took N4bn loan four days before he left office.

“All these needed explanations. The summon was not meant to harass him. This is just an opportunity for him to clear his name. But should The security agencies failed to bring him here, then we will go the legal way, because we have the constitutional powers to summon any former or serving chief executive.” [myad]

Mimiko Plans To Sneak Out Of Nigeria, Ahead Of Febuary 23 Handing Over, APC Alleges

Ondo state governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko
Ondo state governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State has said that the outgoing Governor Olusegun Mimiko is planning to abscond before the expiration of his eight years tenure on February 23 that he is supposed to handover.

“Mimiko is making plans to relocate to Canada or China, thereby evading possible arrest by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for interrogation and prosecution and to launder his last minutes’ loots.

In a statement today, Tuesday by the publicity secretary, Abayomi  Adesanya, the party said: “If this happens, it will create complexities and pit-holes in the smooth take-off for incoming Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN).

“Mimiko’s plan is designed to create complexity and pit-holes in the smooth take-off of the new administration as against the seamless transition he once promised.

“The governor has concluded plans to proceed on a 10-day vacation and to delegate power to his deputy to act as governor prior to the handing over date.

“He had transmitted a notification letter the state House of  Assembly  under  the  leadership  of  the  former  Speaker, Ms Jumoke  Akindele,  some  days  before  her  removal  from  office  over  N15 million fraud  allegation.

“This arrangement failed because the  former  Speaker  could  not announce or read  the  governor’s  vacation  letter  at  the plenary  as  a  result  of  her  removal.”

Adesanya alleged that Mimiko planned to sneak out of the country to a neighbouring country through the land border, before travelling through a chartered flight to either Canada or China.

“We,  therefore,  call  on  security  agencies to beef-up security  and surveillance in and around the country’s borders to prevent the  outgoing governor  and  his  cronies from  escaping with alleged state’s looted funds,’’ he stated.

Reacting to the allegation, the state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, described it as the imagination of the writer.

He said, “I’m a member of the transition committee and am aware that the governor and the governor-elect met three days ago to fine-tune the transition programme and they had useful discussion.

“I am aware that there are lined up projects to be commissioned by the governor between now and the handover day, so if somebody is coming up that the governor is planning to proceed on vacation, that means such person is coming from outer space.

“This is concocted information. There is no outer of truth in what he is saying.”

What I Discussed With President Buhari On Phone Today – Osinbajo

Buhari and Osinbajo special

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, has narrated the issues he discussed on phone with President Muhammadu Buhari who is now going through medical attention in the United Kingdom.

“Let me first say the President is hale and hearty. I spoke to him just this afternoon and we had a fairly long conversation, he is in good shape and very chatty.

“The President was interested in knowing about the budget process and how far we had gone’’, especially with efforts aimed at taking the country out of recession.

“As you know we had a meeting today with the private sector on the economic recovery and growth plan and he was interested in knowing what was happening with that, with the economic recovery and growth plan and what we are doing with the private sector.”

“And of course I informed him of what we are seeing, the protest matches and some of what the feedback is, what people are saying about the economy and all of that,’’ Osinbajo added.

The Acting President, who spoke to news men today, Monday, at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja, said: “just as he has said in his letter to the National Assembly, he needs to go through a cycle of tests and once the test results are seen, he will receive medical advice. We should expect him very soon.”

The Acting President said that at the appropriate time the President will be able to discuss his health status, adding: “before you determine your health status, you must be able to run the necessary tests, and do what doctors have asked to be done, and await the outcome of that before one can talk about any kind of health status.” [myad]

285 Dangote Drivers Declare Wanted Over Disappearance Of 3.5 Million Tyres

engr-mansur-ahmed-of-dangote

No fewer than 285 drivers have been declared wanted in connection with the disappearance of 3.5 million truck tyres from the store of Dangote Group and other theft. The missing tryes have the company’s imprints.

The Coordinator of the company’s National Patrol Unit, Alhaji Abdullahi Magaji, a retired Commissioner of Police, told newsmen in Lokoja that each tyre of the company had an identification number and the number was registered against the driver’s name at collection point.

”Already, 285 drivers identified to have collected 285 tyres have been declared wanted while a number of others are on the run. Already, we have stopped their salaries and we are looking for them. So far, about 3.5 million tyres are missing from the company and we believe they are in circulation within and outside the country. We are determined to recover them.

”We are appealing to those patronizing the drivers and who encouraged them to steal our tyres to stop forthwith. Dangote tyres are customized and marked. Dealers and vulcanisers should please beware.

”People should ensure that the tyres they buy either as new or second hand are not customized Dangote tyres. We have arraigned some drivers and dealers caught with tyres and efforts are being made to arrest vulcanisers involved,” he said.

According to Magaji, security agents are presently on the trail of an identified kingpin who comes to Obajana and Kano to buy the tyres of the drivers.

“Our appeal to vulcanisers is to always look out for our logo on the tyres and report accordingly,” the coordinator said.

He said that the president of the group of companies, Dr. Aliko Dangote, had expressed concern over the incident, adding that the company was trying by all means to stop the ugly development.

The former commissioner of police appealed to those in custody of the tyres to return them “quietly,” either to the company or to the nearest police station to avoid unpleasant consequences, if caught.

He expressed Dangote’s gratitude to the media for sensitizing Nigerians on the zero-tolerance disposition of the management of the company for reckless driving and illegal haulage.

Magaji noted that while illegal haulage had dropped by about 85 per cent, accidents involving Dangote vehicles had reduced drastically, adding that a silent revolution was going on in the company’s transport section to sanitize it.

Osinbajo To Nigerians: Yes, You Deserve A Decent Life

Osinbajo with news men

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has expressed the feeling of the Presidency to the hardships which Nigerians are going through.

Professor Osinbajo admitted, in his opening remarks at the consultative forum between the Economic Management Team (EMT) and the Private Sector on the Economic Recovery Growth Plan, which is to be launched later this month that Nigerians have the right to complain about the slowness of the economy.

“We hear you clear; those who are on the streets protesting the economic situation and even those who are not, but feel the pain of economic hardship. We hear you loud and clear. You deserve a decent life and we are working night and day to make life easier.”

The Acting President recalled the words of President Buhari a few months ago quoting Buhari as having said: “I know that uppermost in your minds today is the economic crisis, the recession for many individuals and families is real. For some it means not being able to pay school fees, for others it is not being able to afford the high cost of rice, millet, or of local or international travel. And for many of our young people the recession means joblessness, sometimes after graduating from university or polytechnic.

I know how difficult things are, and how rough business is. All my adult life I have always earned a salary, and I know what it is like when your salary simply is not enough. In every part of our nation people are making incredible sacrifices.”

Osinbajo said that the journey out of the damage caused by years of neglect and corruption is bound to be difficult but that there is a glorious light at the end of the tunnel.

“Let us work together, steadfastly and patiently for the economic change that will come very soon.” [myad]

Pests Invade Maize Farms In 22 States In Nigeria – Expert Raises Alarm

Maize farm

The Assistant Director and Desk Officer in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Adeleke Muftau, has raised an alarm that African armyworm caterpillar, pests in maize, are currently ravaging farms in 22 states of the country.

Dr Adeleke Muftau, who is in charge of Maize Value Chain, spoke to news men in Abuja today, Monday, saying that that the outbreak was a threat to national food security and maize production in the country. He said that the affected states are spread across the six geo-political zones of the country.

He said that this could lead to scarcity of maize in the country if not adequately controlled.

The officer, who expressed concern over the extent of damage the worms had done to farms, said that the government would embark on massive training for selected farmers across the country.

“Maize is an integral food, staple food in the country and one of the major food crops apart from rice and wheat. The ministry is planning to train farmers on how to control the menace.

“We have visited farms and we have seen the devastation that has occurred in those farms and for us to reduce or alleviate farmers suffering and losses, we need to train them.

“The usual method of spraying chemicals is not effective because it was discovered that the armyworms usually bury themselves in the maize.

“The normal way of spraying does not touch the worms and that is why farmers are complaining that the chemicals are not effective. It is the method of application that is wrong.”

The desk officer noted that the ministry had made provisions for the control of the disease in the 2017 budget to avoid further spread of the pest.

He said that the pest was also capable of infecting guinea corn and millet.

Muftau disclosed that the ministry was collaborating with the International Institute for Agricultural Research to develop a resistant variety to the pests. [myad]

The minister also mandated the Committee to study the recommendations of relevant committees of the past and also from the various MDAs and come up with harmonized implementable action plan and template that will guide how the FCT can have a very efficient system that guarantees safe living by all within the city and even the surrounding suburbs and Area Councils.

“In a way, you will notice that what your committee is doing is being done by similar committees all over the country and particularly a national committee under the Inspector General of Police. So, I will expect that you would reach out to some of these Committees, especially those within the North Central Geo-Political Zone or even the office of the Inspector General of Police to be able to leverage on some of their works and some of the information available to them.

“At the end of the day, we want to have a Territory that is very peaceful, that is vibrant economically and is a melting pot where everybody comes in and relates freely with the other party.”

Muhammad Bello said that it is the decision of the FCT Administration as a responsible government to designate grazing reserves for those who are rearing cattle to prevent them from wandering into the city centre and obstructing traffic flow.

“Your Committee will need to liaise very closely with the Ona of Abaji, Alhaji Adamu Baba Yunusa, who is the Chairman of the FCT Council of Chiefs, because at the end of the day, whatever recommendations you give us, the implementation has to be through the Council of Traditional Chiefs.”

The Chairman of the Committee, Engr. Uthman Mohammed who responded on behalf of the members appreciated the confidence and trust the Administration has reposed in them, saying that cattle grazing and rustling are not peculiar to the FCT alone but that if it is not well managed, it could get out of hand.
