Farida, Ex EFCC Boss Describes Ribadu, Another Ex EFCC Boss As Political Prostitute

farida-waziri

A former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mrs. Farida Waziri has accused her predecessor, Nuhu Ribadu as a political prostitute that jumped from one political party to another.

“I equally suspect that Nuhu may sooner than later blame me for his penchant to jump from one party to the party like a political prostitute; from the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) to PDP and now to All Progressives Congress (APC).

“It is his lust for power, inordinate ambition and desperation for political relevance that continue to push him to dine and wine, and even enjoy the wealth of those he had labeled as corrupt in yesteryears.”

Farida, who was reacting to Nuhu Ribadu’s earlier reference to her as the cause of his political misfortune, having lost the 2015 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Adamawa State, said that Ribadu could not hold her responsible for his double face, lack of principle and complex contradictions in his character.

A statement signed by her Personal Assistant, Ms Omolara Oluremi on Saturday in Abuja quoted Farida as accusing Ribadu of being in the habit of dropping her name, warning him to stop using her name anytime he needs public attention or sympathy.

“I know he is always obsessed with dropping my name into his script anytime he needs public pity or political relevance,” Farida.

She said: “my attention has been drawn to a reckless and irresponsible statement credited to Nuhu Ribadu at a function on Wednesday in Abuja, where he, as has been his rhetoric since 2008 when I succeeded him as the EFCC Chairman, attempted to malign me by accusing me of being part of his imaginary enemies who frustrated the nation’s anti-graft war.

“My first inclination was to ignore Nuhu Ribadu since I know he is always obsessed with dropping my name into his script anytime he needs public pity or political relevance but on a second thought I felt I should advise him to leave me out of his frustrations and face life.

“There should be a life after EFCC. If after eight years of being removed as EFCC Chairman, he is yet to move on with life, even after two successive Chairmen had occupied the same seat and moved on with their lives, then his problem may be psychogenic.

“He needs help elsewhere, certainly not from me.

“If Nuhu is yet to face the reality that EFCC is a Federal Government Agency and not a personal estate of anybody eight years after, I find it compelling to remind him.

“Otherwise one day he would wake up to blame me for his defeat in the 2011 presidential election and even his pathetic outing in the 2015 governorship election in Adamawa state despite the slush funds deployed to ensure his victory at the polls.

“There is also the need to remind Nuhu Ribadu that before he succumbs to another logorrhea, he should avail himself a copy of the investigative report on recovered assets during his tenure as EFCC Chairman and use the opportunity of the next naming ceremony or birthday party he is invited to, to explain to Nigerians what happened to billions of funds and assets recovered from suspects under him, with no records or documentation.

“He should be grateful to me that I cleaned his mess by creating an Assets Forfeiture Unit to put the records straight and do things rightly.

“No matter how hard Nuhu tries to obliterate my tenure with his numerous lies, the record of over 450 convictions secured during my three and a half year sojourn in EFCC remains indelible.

“Though I inherited about 10 high profile cases from him in 2008, we took over 75 of such high profile cases to courts, with another 1,500 low profile cases pending in courts as at my exit in November 2011.

“We initiated and commenced work on the permanent office complex of the EFCC sitting on a 5.5 hectares of land along Airport Road, Abuja, in addition to setting up offices in Maiduguri, Borno state and Ibadan, Oyo state to expand the Commission’s scope of operations. I can go on and on, on my achievements.

“I have decided to mention just a few for now to discourage Nuhu from claiming the credit for them when next he wants to make himself happy or seek political relevance.

“At this juncture, let me advise Nuhu Ribadu to stop being a weeping man. Garrulity does not heal frustration or depression.

“He may consider vying for a local government chairmanship or councillorship position to get busy so that he can stop spewing falsehood, fables and lies to seek public sympathy and political relevance.” [myad]

How Illicit Drugs Are Causing Havoc On Nigerians In China – Blue Diamond Boss

festus-in-china
An Entrepreneur and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Blue Diamond China, Festus Mbisiogu, has painted a sordid picture on how illicit drugs is exerting a harmful effect on not just on China-Nigeria bilateral relationships, but Nigerians who live and do businesses in China.

Festus, who spoke at the forum “Nigerians say No to Illicit Drugs” organized by Members of the Nigerian Community in China, said that illicit drugs have dangerous effects on the sociology-economic development of nations.

He said that China, which is one of Nigeria’s closest allies and partners, is also one of Nigeria’s important trading and export partners and as such exerts a positive influence on the social and economic development in Nigeria.
He expressed sadness however, that the Chinese authorities are discriminating against Nigerians living in China compared to other nationals, a situation which he said, could be as a result of some Nigerians engaging in illicit drug trade.
“In Guangdong Province alone, Nigerians contribute to over 80% of SME development that has revolutionized means of doing business between Africans in China and Chinese entrepreneurs. In the city of Guangzhou alone in many of predominantly Nigerian business areas, daily business transactions has been recorded to a cash return of over $5,000,000 Million Dollars a day! Yet Nigerians continues to suffer one of the worst forms of stereotype between Chinese and its foreign visitors virtually in every aspect.
“As the Nigeria-China cooperation continues to grow, there are over 50 Chinese official development finance projects identified in Nigeria which cuts across rail, power and telecommunications projects within the last 10 years.
“China looks up to Nigeria as a model of trade and economic development in Africa to boost its cooperation with Africa. At present there over 2,000 registered Chinese businesses and companies in Nigeria alone and China seeks for avenues of mutual person to person cooperation between its Nationals, its business owners and Nigerian citizens. The underlying fact which Nigerians in China has failed to grasp is that Nigerian immigrants in China should have been the direct recipients of these benefits of trade development and mutual cooperation.
“However due to our abusive tendencies to law and order we are on a daily basis denied these benefits and are instead placed on various diplomatic restrictions.
“Today because of the involvement of some of Nigerian citizens in illicit drugs and drugs trafficking in China and outside, we cannot truly say that the consummate benefits of this relationship are robbing off on all of us. Rather we are being profiled on daily basis and denied some privileges which ordinarily should come with our residing in this country.
“It is knowledge in the public domain that because of this involvement in drugs, by some miscreants, all of us are paying a heavy price for it. Like our people say, when one finger is dipped in the red oil it will automatically affect all the other fingers even when they do not want to be robbed with oil.
“In Guangdong Province, Nigerians are no longer giving resident permit. There is also no visa extension. Nigerians who are married and residing in China are not given resident permit. That is why many of us do not have our families here with us. Our citizens who come here to study cannot get resident permit and are not allowed to work unlike the citizens of other countries.”
Festus, who has also championed the cause of regular and electricity supply in Nigeria, said this was the time for Nigerians to rise and say No to drugs because drugs and crime undermine development by eroding social and human capital.

He said that the direct impacts of victimization, discrimination, image problem as well as fear of crime impede the socioeconomic development of all, including genuine business men and women.
“Nigerian citizens used to be the most favorite of China’s selection of Africans to partner with in business and other mutual relationship but these unlawful behaviors robbed the average Nigerian immigrant and businessmen in China that privilege.
Religion has become a part of our cultural values, and plays a major influence to how we value life,” he said and pleaded with religious leaders in China to make good use of their platform to discourage their members from the temptation of sudden wealth and the consequences that goes with it.
“In fact, you all have a major role to play since all our religious gathering shares one thing in common – the blessings of prosperity and successful lifestyles. We should take the courage to define the true blessings of God when we work hard, pray and trust God than the deceit of the enemy in the name of prosperity of which the end is always a bitter experience and transferred sufferings and shame to everyone.”
He tasked the Nigeria embassy and the Consulate General in Guangzhou to find every means to look into the affairs of the many Nigerian citizens present here in Guangzhou and other parts of China.
“We are a communal people; even China recognizes the impact of our community gatherings, as it aids control and management of the numerous Nigerian immigrants resident or transacting businesses across China, the embassy authority should help in creating a platform of legality in the leadership of the Nigerian Community – this I believe will aid all our efforts in harnessing the activities of many Nigerian citizens who are here in China for different purposes.
“As much as we are foreigners in China and have come here with the sole intent to succeed and take wealth home, the issue of clash of interest and partisan politics among Nigerian citizens whom I believe all has genuine intentions in helping to organize their fellow brothers and sisters should not be viewed in the negative but to be encouraged to take a formal approach with due respect to the laws of the land.
“The embassy may not be able to follow the activities of every Nigerian in order to put them under a check but through a legal platform of the Nigeria Union under the blessings of the Nigeria embassy and the Consulate General office here in Guangzhou, we would be able to have on ground “foot soldiers” to combat the excesses of few of our citizens that is contributing a menace and robbing all of us the immense benefits of our cooperation with China.” [myad]

$1 Billion Is Needed To Rehabilitate Victims Of Boko Haram In 2017 – UN Official

IDP Camps

The UN Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator Peter Lundberg has said that one billion dollars are needed to provide aid for victims of Boko Haram insurgents in Nigeria’s restive northeast next year.

In a statement, Lundberg appealed to international community to increase their financial aids for the rehabilitation of the victims of the conflict which he described as“the largest crisis in Africa.”

“The narrative on this humanitarian crisis can no longer be ignored and we are appealing to the international community to help us prevent the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians over the coming 12 months.

“This is the largest crisis on the African continent and I am confident that with the support of the international community and the private sector, we can begin to bring hope to the people of the northeast.”

Lundberg said that the humanitarian response plan would address the needs of almost seven million people in dire need of nutrition, food, shelter, healthcare and education.

“A projected 5.1 million people will face serious food shortages as the conflict and risk of unexploded improvised devices prevented farmers planting for a third year in a row, causing a major food crisis.”

The scale of humanitarian suffering became more apparent after Nigerian troops recaptured swathes of territory held by Boko Haram since 2015.

The Boko Haram I insurgents have waged a brutal seven-year war in Nigeria’s North East  and has since spreading to Cameroon, Chad and Niger. [myad]

Kogi Chief Of Staff Allegedly Orders Arrest Of Publisher For Describing Him As De Facto Governor

Edward Onoja Kogo Chief Of Staff

Edward David Onoja, Chief of Staff to the Kogi state governor, Yahaya Bello, has allegedly ordered the arrest and detention of the publisher of a community based magazine, known as Policy and Law maker, Prince Friday Ogungbemi.
Ogungbemi was believed to have been picked up from his residence on Wednesday night by Operatives of the State Security Services (SSS) and has since been in detention at the DSS facility in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.

It was learnt that the publisher was picked up on the orders of the Chief of Staff to the governor, allegedly over his current publication where he described him (Chief of Staff), as the de-facto Governor.
In the publication, Ogungbemi reportedly said that the Chief of Staff single handedly brought more than nine of his brothers and in-laws to occupy sensitive positions in government with some of them having no requisite qualifications. He cited the Chairman and Secretary of Olamaboro Local Government Area as his biological brothers and the Commissioner of Environment and the director of protocol to the Deputy Governor as his relations, among others.
Condemning the detention of the journalist, the Federated Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Publishers of Community based newspapers in Kogi State described the development as unlawful and illegal, stressing that it is the height of impunity by the state government.
In a statement by Abu Michael, Chairman and Gideon Ayodele, Secretary of the state chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), insisted that the arrest was a calculated attempt to muzzle the press in the state, adding that it was unnecessary and uncalled for.

“The government or any of its appointee who felt injured in any publication should have reacted through a rejoinder or seek redress in a court of law as is the practice in civilized democracy. It is the first of its kind in the state.”
The Chapel said the continued detention of the publisher for over 48 hours over a civil issue has called to question the level of impunity the present change agenda seeks to correct but still practice, saying that the arrest is akin to using a sledgehammer to kill an ant.
Also reacting to the arrest and detention of the journalist, a Right activist and coordinator of Centre for Human Right and Conflict Resolution, Comrade Idris Miliki while condemning the act, said Article 21 of the United Nations Human Rights allow every citizens of the world to participate in the affair of his or her country through a free chosen means.

“Article 19 state; ‘Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right include freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”
He said that various sections of the1999 Constitutions as amended also uphold the rights of citizens to hold opinion and freedom of expression and wondered where the security agents in Kogi State derive the power to arrest and detain a journalist for mere holding and expressing opinion through a legitimate means.
Similarly, Mr. Sam Egwu, the Correspondent of Leadership Newspaper was beaten up by some thugs on the orders of one of the Media Aide to the governor and he is currently receiving treatment in Abuja, while one of the Media Aides to the governor, Ademu Idakwo is known for howling insults on working journalists in the state with threats to deal with them. Professors Amoke Sadiq, Tenure Ojaide Bag This Year’s Nigeria’s Merit Award

merit-awardee

A top environmental scientist, Professors Omowunmi Amoke Sadiq and a poet/ literary critic, Professor Tanure Ojaide, have emerged as this year’s winners of the Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM).

Speaking last night at the dinner and investiture ceremony of the awardees, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, said that the award recipients demonstrated that Nigeria is blessed with tremendous talent and that the nation’swriters, poets and scientists in the country are world class.

Osinbajo commended the laureates for their intellectual accomplishments and asked them to remain mentors for the younger generations.

The Vice President said that the greatness of individual citizens is yet to correlate with that of the nation, saying that the difficulties facing the nation today are in part the result of an elite failure to accept the responsibility that privilege confers, and the responsibility of shaping the right values for the society.

“We must define clearly what is lofty, noble and deserving of honour and how these values can be sustained, preserved and enforced.”

Professor Osinbajo said that there is a burden that comes with privilege, and that is “to create the moral and philosophical premises for integrity in the public service, fidelity to the rule of law and the creation of meritocracy as a rule.”

The Vice President also urged the Nigerian elite to join in the building of a new society where merit would be placed above other primordial considerations.

According to him, placing quota before merit does not work, saying that he is yet to meet a Nigerian who needed medical surgery and insisted that only his ethnic stock should perform it.

He challenged the Nigerian elites and leaders to make sacrifices and commit to a country run on merit, integrity, hard work justice and patriotism.

“To build a new Nigeria, we need a new tribe of men and women of all ethnicities, of all faiths, committed to a country run on high values of merit, integrity, hard work, justice and love of country.

“A tribe of men and women who are prepared to make the sacrifices and resolve the constraints crucial to building a strong society; who are prepared to stick together, fight corruption side by side, insist on justice even when our friends and those of our tribes and faith are at the receiving end.

“A tribe consisting of professionals, businessmen, politicians, religious leaders and all of those who believe that this new Nigeria is possible. This requires a new way of thinking, a new leadership corps, a new tribe.

“The challenge for us today is a challenge of finding a society where everyone especially those of us who lead in every aspect of leadership agree that this country is worth fighting for, that this country can truly be great.

“And the evidence we have seen today is that this country can truly be great and so may I just challenge us today that it is time to populate that new tribe.”

Other top government dignitaries at the event included the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Engineer Babachir David Lawal, whose office oversees the planning of the  NNOM and the Governing Board Chairman of the Merit Award Prof. Moses Essien.

Responding after her investiture, Professor Sadiq thanked the Federal Government for the award and gave the assurance that it would spur her to greater contributions toward national growth and humanity. She noted the fact that the Buhari administration had focused attention on things that matter to the people and have sent serious message to the rest of the world.

On his part, Professor Ojaide commended the organizers of the award for the recognition, adding that the award was the most important in his life coming from his country.

Commenting on the Niger Delta crisis, Ojaide appealed for fairness from both the sides of the Niger Delta people as well as the federal government, in order to resolve the issues in the region.

“I want Niger Delta people to realize that they are part of the Nigerian federation and as such should cede some of the resources to the development of the entire country. But the rest of the country should also be sensitive to your own problems.” [myad]

Kano Governor Raises Alarm: Boko Haram Insurgents Are Gathering In Falgore Forest

abdullahi-umar-ganduje

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has raised alarm over the gathering of Boko Haram insurgents in Falgore forest, less than 180 kilometres to the state capital.

The governor, who briefed President Muhammadu Buhari on the situation when he had a closed door meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, today, Friday, painted a picture of an increasing influx of Boko Haram insurgents into Falgore forest in the state.

Speaking to news men after the meeting with the President, Ganduje said: “I came to brief Mr. President on the security situation in Kano, especially on the fallout from the North Eastern part of this country in which some of the Boko Haram insurgents kidnappers will like to dominate Falgore where they will be operating to other parts of the North-Western part of the country.

“So, the security agencies are working very hard and a lot of arrests have been made; investigation is going on. We will not allow them to dominate Kano and to make it as a launching pad.

“Certainly, we expect that if they are dismantled from the North East part of this country, they will find another location and Kano being an older city, is an attractive place for such elements to come in.”

According to him, security agencies have apprehended three persons believed to be leaders of the criminal group.

The governor, who is the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress’ Technical Committee on Rivers by-elections, expressed optimism that all the APC candidates would emerge victorious in the exercise.

He said that the APC would ensure a free and fair election in the state, adding: “we have fresh ideas even though the environment in Rivers is quite different. We are consulting. We are coordinating and this time around, like in Ondo state, we must ensure free and fair election.

“You know in that part of the country, having free and fair election is not normal and we must make it normal this time around. We must make sure that there is security so that people can come out and vote and vote the person they like.

“That is our main preoccupation at the moment. We are making wider consultations with stakeholders and we believe we will succeed.” [myad]
