I Have Prepared For My Death, Archbishop Desmond Tutu Confirms

desmund-tutu-of-south-africa

South African retired Anglican archbishop and anti-apartheid icon, Desmond Tutu celebrated has said that he has prepared for his death as he celebrated his 85th birthday today, Friday. He said that he would like to be allowed the option of dignified assisted death.

“Today, I myself am even closer to the departures hall than arrivals, so to speak, and my thoughts turn to how I would like to be treated when the time comes,” Tutu wrote in The Washington Post.

“I have prepared for my death and have made it clear that I do not wish to be kept alive at all costs,” said Tutu, who was discharged from hospital late last month.

“I hope I am treated with compassion and allowed to pass on to the next phase of life’s journey in the manner of my choice,” he wrote.

Tutu, who is fondly referred to as the Arch, has spent time in hospital on several occasions since last year for a nagging infection.

One reason for his hospitalization has been an infection resulting from the prostate cancer treatment he has been receiving for nearly 20 years.

“Now more than ever, I feel compelled to lend my voice to this cause,” he said.

“For those suffering unbearably and coming to the end of their lives, merely knowing that an assisted death is open to them can provide immeasurable comfort.”

Medically-assisted suicide or voluntary euthanasia is illegal in South Africa, but in recent years there have been growing calls for it to be legalized.

Earlier today, Tutu presided over Eucharist at his home church in Cape Town.

The retired Anglican archbishop paid a moving tribute to St George’s Cathedral before laying his head on the communion table and briefly wept.

“I have indicated that when the time comes I would like to rest here, permanently, with you,” he told the worshippers.

Tutu, who became the first black Anglican archbishop of Cape Town in 1986, had a cup of tea with worshippers after the Friday morning service.

President Jacob Zuma and the last apartheid leader F.W. de Klerk led tributes to Tutu.

In a statement, Zuma said Tutu “has contributed immensely to the freedom and democratic dispensation” of South Africa.

“He continues to inspire the nation and the world in the promotion of human rights, justice and the wellbeing of all especially the poor,” said Zuma.

De Klerk and his foundation wished Tutu “the best of health in the year ahead,” and acknowledged “his valuable role as a peacemaker, as well as his contribution towards goodwill between all South Africans, and towards South Africa’s constitutional democracy.”

Ordained at the age of 30 and appointed archbishop in 1986, Tutu used his position to advocate for international sanctions against white-minority rule in South Africa, and later to lobby for rights globally.

He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.

Edo Poll: I Have A Call From God To Recover My Stolen Mandate – Pastor Ize-Iyamu

pastor-osagie-ize-iyamu

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the September 28 Edo State Governorship Election, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has said that he had, in the past few days, decided to seek the face of God to know the steps to take, after Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress (APC), winner of the election.

Pastor Ize-Iyamu said that he heard the call to pursue the matter and recover the mandate, which the people had clearly given to him and the PDP.

Speaking to the PDP supporters and members of the Civil Society Organizations at his campaign office in Benin City, prior to a protest march that went through the city centre, Pastor Ize-Iyamu said that he had heard the call of Edo people to seek redress.

He said that he recognized that the struggle for the mandate was beyond his discretion because “it belongs to Edo people.”

The PDP candidate said that Edo people should be rest assured that the robbery would not stand because there was overwhelming evidence of the fraud, which was committed by INEC in connivance with the APC.

He enjoined the people to remain patient through an expected long-drawn legal battle that will end in the Supreme Court.

Ize-Iyamu upbraided Governor Adams Oshiomhole who, he said, was desperate to impose Mr. Godwin Obaseki so as to cover up the people’s money which Oshiomhole looted.

He said that Oshiomhole’s days as a governor were numbered and that he would soon become a former governor at which time he would no longer have immunity from prosecution for his financial crimes against Edo people.

He said that Godwin Obaseki’s tenure would be cut short and Oshiomhole would not escape probe.

Pastor Ize-Iyamu condemned the failure of the police to arrest APC’s State Youth Leader and known thug, Osakpamwan Eriyo who, in broad daylight, the police allowed to disrupt the collation of result in Oredo Ward two because the APC lost his ward.

He said the police should effect his arrest in a matter of days or the people will arrest him.

Before the march proceeded,   Ize-Iyamu told the party supporters to observe a peaceful protest procession. The crowd of protesters, numbering thousands, went round some parts of the state capital.

Among the protesters were leaders of the PDP, including the state chairman, Chief Dan Orbih. [myad]

“As women and mothers of the nation, the faith of the next generation of both girls and boys occupies much of my thinking.”
Aisha Buhari, who spoke today, Friday, at the third annual conference organized by SHE Forum Africa with the theme: Regroup, Reboot and Remove the mask, called on women in leadership positions to be role models for younger generation of women leaders to achieve full inclusion of women.

“To achieve gender inclusion, the world must break up and pay attention to the rights and opportunities of all human beings to reach and live up to their full potentials.”

She said that such development would enhance empowerment of women, including the decision making process of women in the society, which she said would address the undeniable vices and social norms that make women and girls to be treated poorly.
She also urged business owners, civil society groups and institutions to proffer solutions to inequality in order to promote creative solutions and systemic change in the society.
Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi, a Gender and Development Specialist, said that there is need for Nigerian women to regroup, reboot and remove the mask because Nigeria was at war.
Adeleye-Fayemi said: “There is a war going on in Nigeria and the rights of women are greatly affected. Women are dying daily due to maternal mortality, women are being kidnapped and one out of three women experience some form of violence in her lifetime.
“Poverty, exclusion and abuse are things that have almost been normalized in our country.”
Adeleye-Fayemi said that Nigeria has been featured badly in the global gender economic measures and called on women to take their rightful place in the economy.
She said that in the Gender Economic Measure, Nigeria features very badly on most global indicators, adding: “the 2015 World Bank Gender Equality rated Nigeria as 158 out of 177 countries on the gender economic measures.
“The 2004 World Economic Forum on global gender report rated Nigeria 118 out of 178 counties, Nigeria presently feature as one of the 20 worst countries in the world to be a woman.’’
She said that issues on gender equality and women right have been undermined, and that culture, tradition and religion are used as an excuse to exclude women from attaining their full potentials.
The gender activist said that there is need for more feminist in the decision making process such as women with agenda for change, transformation and how to move women right issues forward.
“We have only six per cent of women in the National Assembly in Nigeria; eight states in Nigeria do not have women at the state Houses of Assembly.’’
She called on all stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of gender policy framework on Violence Against Persons Act and National Gender Policy, among others. [myad]

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar

Former Vice President and chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar described the Federal Government’s decision to withdraw the criminal charges against the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, as a recipe for the advancement of our democracy.

He stressed that the move by the government of President Muhammadu Buhari is an indication that the government values the much-needed cordial relationship between the Executive and Legislature which would is in the interest of the nation.

A statement by his media office in Abuja today, Friday quoted the former Vice President as saying that the decision of the Buhari government is “a wise and timely move.”

Atiku, who holds the traditional title of  Turakin Adamawa, said that it is only in the situation of harmonious, cordial and corporative relationship between the three arms of government that real progress and development can take place in the polity.

Atiku was particularly happy that the decision came at the time like this when everybody should be mobilized to tackle the current economic difficulties in the country, and get the nation out of economic recession, adding that the two vital arms of the government needed to eliminate all issues that would promote strife and mistrust.

According to him, political crisis does little or no good in a democracy, even as he advises all individuals and political forces in the country that still have issues to come together and resolve their differences for the good of the nation and the APC.

Describing President Muhammadu Buhari as a statesman and a Man of Peace, Atiku said that the decision by the Executive to end the disturbing allegations against the Senate leadership has opened a new page in the relationship between the Executive.

The former number two man noted that President Buhari has never been comfortable with actions or issues that unnecessarily heats up the polity, even as he advised the National Assembly to reciprocate the spirit behind the resolution of the impasse by stepping up its collaborative efforts with the Executive arm of government in the arduous task of fixing the nation’s broken economy and infrastructure. Nollywood Star, Kate Henshaw, Joins Malaria Fighting Army

Kate

Nollywood star and entertainment icon, Kate Henshaw, has joined the army that is battling to raise awareness about the deadly consequences of malaria.

Henshaw, who spoke at a gathering of health editors with the National Malaria Elimination Programme and the Society for Family Health at the Lagos Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja today, Friday, promised to join advocacy efforts.
She spoke as the National Malaria Elimination Programme and the Society for Family Health declared a war to raise awareness in the fight against malaria with a 2020 target date for eliminating up to 80 percent of current cases. The programme is under the Global Fund for Malaria New Funding Model.
Henshaw decried the continued harm malaria has been causing in Nigerian homes as well as the ignorance and misinformation about fevers, lamenting that citizens underplay malaria or describe it in endearing terms.

“Growing up in those days, people spoke about malaria as if it belonged to them with expressions like ‘I have malaria,’ ‘my malaria’ and ‘ordinary malaria.’ Surprisingly, after many years, these terms are still common place among family members, colleagues, and friends, irrespective of class or level of education.”
The actress and TV personality called for concerted action to create awareness even as she affirmed: “the starting point for behaviour change is the right knowledge. Poor education should not be a barrier in this 21st century when we have access to television, radio, internet, etc.

“It is time for the media to take up the challenge of creating malaria-based programs to promote malaria prevention, diagnosis and treatment for a malaria-free Nigeria by 2020. These programs will help debunk several malaria-related myths such as ‘malaria is caused by standing in the sun, eating oily meals, witchcraft, working for too long, bad water, bad air and much more. It is time for you -every media personnel and individual- seated here to take action against malaria.
“I have committed myself to support the fight against malaria in Nigeria by letting people know the benefits of sleeping inside the Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets, especially for children under 5 and pregnant women. It is also very important to have a Rapid Diagnostic Test done or microscopy doneto be sure it is malaria before administering treatment with Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy – (ACT).”
Henshaw advised the media to lead the fight against the disease.

“I implore the media to let Nigerians know that not all fevers are malaria; let Nigerians know that people are dying from malaria when malaria is a preventable and treatable illness; let Nigerians know that testing using RDT to confirm malaria before treatment is the way to go. The best medicine for malaria treatment is Artemisinin-based Combination Therapies – what we know as (ACTs). It is very affordable and accessible.”
Statistics gathered by public health NGO, Society for Family Health, show that malaria inflicts high costs on Nigeria.

Out of pocket treatment and prevention costs as much as $3 billion annually. Malaria causes absenteeism in schools, offices and markets with effects on the economy. Malaria also accounts for 11 percent of maternal mortality and three in 10 deaths of children less than five years old. [myad]

Federal Govt Withdraws Forgery Charges Against Saraki, Ekweremadu

Saraki Ekweremadu

The Federal Government of Nigeria has filed a motion to withdraw the charge of criminal conspiracy against Senate President Bukola Saraki and his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu.

An affidavit in support of the motion was filed before the High Court of Federal Capital Territory today, Thursday, by a litigation officer from the Federal Ministry of Justice, Odubu Loveme.

Saraki and Ekweremadu, as well as a former Clerk of the National Assembly, Salisu Maikasuwa, and a former Deputy clerk, Ben Efeturi, were first arraigned before Justice Yusuf Halilu on June 10, 2016 via charge No. CR/219/16.

They all pleaded not guilty on July 27, 2016.

In the motion filed today, Mr. Loveme said that counsel to the Federal Government on the matter, Aliyu Umar, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), on September 30 in the office of the Director of Public Prosecution told him that he had studied the case diary and “ had decided to amend the charge in the manner stated on the face of the motion paper”.

Mr. Loveme added that he has, consequently, filed an amended charge.

“That I depose to this affidavit in good faith believing same to be correct to the best of my knowledge and information and in accordance with the Oaths Act Cap 01 laws of the Federation of Nigeria,” he said.

Based on the amended charge, only Maikasuwa and Efeturi would face prosecution.

Count one of the charge against the two civil servants, is that of Criminal Conspiracy punishable under section 97 (1) Penal Code Act ( Northern States) Federation Provisions Act, 1960, Cap 345, laws of the Federation 1990 as amended.

It read: “that Salisu Maikasuwa and Benedict Efeturi, on or about the 9th day of June 2015 at the National Assembly Complex, Three Arms Zone, Abuja within the jurisdiction of this honourable court agreed to do an illegal act, to wit to make the Senate Standing Orders 2015 as amended without the authority of the 7th Senate of the Federal republic of Nigeria which act was committed by yourselves and that you thereby committed the offence of criminal conspiracy.”

The two officials are accused of fraudulently amending the 2015 Senate Standing Orders without the authority of the 7th Senate “with intention that the Senators elect of the 8th Senate would believe that the said Senate Standing Orders 2015 ( as amended) was made by the authority of the 7th Senate of the Federal republic of Nigeria.”

They are also accused of forging a document punishable under section 366 of the Penal Code Act ( Northern States) Federal Provisions Act, 1960, Cap 345, Laws of the Federation 1990 ( as amended).

The Nigerian Government also accused them of giving false information with the intention to mislead the public.

The Court had on September 28 adjourned the matter to Friday, October 7 for commencement of hearing.

Umar, in his written address in support of the motion to amend the charge on Thursday, stated that the sole issue for determination is “whether the Court can permit the amendment of the charge in terms of the amended charge”.

He said the Court has the powers to permit the amendment based on the provisions of Section 216 (1) of the Administration o Criminal Justice Act.

The Section stated that “ A Court may permit an alteration or an amendment to a charge or framing of a new charge at any time before judgment is pronounced.”

He also quoted Section 216 (3) which states that “Where a Defendant is arraigned for trial on an imperfect or erroneous charge; the Court may permit or direct the framing of a new charge, or any amendment to, or the alteration of the original charge.” [myad]

Governor Bindow Of Adamawa Probes His Predecessor, Murtala Nyako

bindow-of-adamawa

Governor Jibrilla Bindow of Adamawa State has given a go-ahead for the probe of his predecessor, ex governor Murtala Nyako, especially on the execution of Millennium Development Goals (MDG) projects in the state.
according to the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Malam Ahmad Sajoh, who spoke to newsmen on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting, a five-man Investigative Panel has been constituted to do the job.
The commissioner said that the committee had Alhaji Alfa Belel as Chairman with Ayuba Tumba, Jim Audu and Babs Shuaibu as members while the Deputy Permanent Secretary (Political) in the office of the Secretary to the State Government, would serve as Secretary.
Sajoh also said that the White Paper on Justice Bobbo Umar Judicial Panel of
Enquiry which investigated the former administration of Murtala Nyako had been sent to the state’s Ministry of Justice for advice.
Governor Bindow had recently threatened to ratify the white paper on report of the judicial commission which investigated the administration of Nyako, “if supporters of the former governor continue attempts to sabotage my government”.
This was even as  a chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State and a close ally of Nyako, Alhaji Uba Dan-Arewa, dismissed “threats by Bindow to indict Nyako.”
Dan-Arewa said the governor was only playing to the gallery as the former governor had no case to answer.
Dan-Arewa claimed that the Justice Bobboi Umar Judicial Panel of Inquiry, set up by
former acting governor, Umaru Fintiri did not complete its assignment.
Dan-Arewa said: “It is an empty threat because there is nothing like white paper as the said panel did not complete its assignment.”
He said that Fintiri, who set up the panel, was removed from office by an Abuja High Court for illegally occupying the seat of Acting Governor.
“Governor Bala Ngilari who took over from Fintiri snubbed the panel, while the judgment of the Federal Court of Appeal, Yola Division, on Nyako’s impeachment delivered in February this year declared Nyako’s impeachment as null and void and of no effect.
“Meaning, Fintiri’s administration which set up the panel does not exist by law.
“If Gov. Bindow wants any white paper to sign, he needs to set up another panel to probe Nyako.”
He cautioned Bindow against heating up the state, adding that the recent formation of the political support group, Team Bindow, by the governor’s supporters, was an attempt to commence campaign ahead of 2019. [myad]
