Portugal Beats France To Emerge New Euro Champion

Portugal the new Euro championPortugal, Sunday evening, beat the host, France to emerge the winner of the Euro 2016 championship.
A second half extra time goal gave the Portuguese the cup.
Portugal played without its star striker, Cristiano Ronaldo, for most part of the game.
Portugal finished third in their group, but found a way even on a night when their greatest player left the pitch on a stretcher. The players of France were on their knees and, on the far touchline, Ronaldo could be seen trying to make sense of an extraordinary story and take in all the contrasting emotions.

Ronaldo’s damaged knee might have been a grievous setback but Portugal refused to let it be the decisive factor. They gave everything to keep out France during those long passages when they were put under pressure and, ultimately, Éder’s decisive goal in the second period of extra time won a test of endurance.

Their run of 10 successive defeats to France, stretching back to 1975, is over and they can reflect on the greatest achievement in the history of their national team. Their tactics will not appeal to everyone but nobody could possibly dispute their toughness to cope after the jarring challenge that meant their three-time Ballon d’Or winner could play only a bit-part role in the glory.

The substitute, Eder won the European Championship for Portugal with a brilliant goal after Cristiano Ronaldo went off injured in the first half

The problem with Ronaldo sometimes is that his occasional histrionics makes it difficult to know whether he is suffering from faux pain. This time, however, it was quickly apparent he was in trouble. Dimitri Payet’s right kneecap had followed through, at speed, into the side of Ronaldo’s left leg, bending the joint with the force of the impact. Portugal’s medical staff doused the area with magic spray but there was not a single moment from that point onwards when Ronaldo looked pain-free. His body language had sunk. He was unable to run with any freedom and nine minutes later he was down again, signalling for help, and eventually taken off for another round of treatment by the side of the pitch.

Had it been any other player he would have been taken off straight away.

This being Ronaldo, there was a desperate attempt to see how far his powers could stretch, but it always felt unrealistic when he blew out his cheeks and made one last attempt to run it off. Ronaldo had been back on the pitch for three minutes when he finally conceded defeat, raised his hand and collapsed to the ground for the third occasion, this time removing his captain’s armband.

The tears quickly followed and, for once, the sport’s ultimate showman did not want the crowd’s acclaim. He might not even have noticed in his desolation but it was a long, sympathetic ovation: a crowd not only recognizing genuine greatness but that this was no way for a player of that magnitude to be removed from the occasion.

Nani took over as captain but Portugal were shorn of their most important player and Ronaldo’s absence meant being even more dependent on a system whereby all four of their midfielders would routinely drop back into defence when the team did not have the ball.

France had put them under considerable pressure from the start with Payet and Moussa Sissoko given the licence to roam, Antoine Griezmann picking up space and Paul Pogba frequently galloping forward with that long, leggy stride. Yet it was difficult for les Bleus to navigate a way behind the opposition defence and Portugal were troubled only sporadically in that period, most notably when Rui Patrício’s sprawling save turned a flying header from Griezmann over the crossbar.

France needed more wit and creativity around the penalty area and Payet looked absolutely intent on showing them the way. Not everything he tried came off, but Payet played with the drive and energy that made it seem strange Didier Deschamps thought it necessary to take him off after 57 minutes.

His replacement, Kingsley Coman, has penetrative qualities of his own but the substitution prompted loud, derisive whistles from the crowd.

France had lost their early momentum, looking increasingly short of ideas and not helped a great deal by Olivier Giroud’s lack of movement in attack. A more ambitious team than Portugal might have sensed this was a good time to show more adventure. Instead, they continued to play with near-unremitting caution and were fortunate that Griezmann misdirected his header after Coman’s cross created one of the game’s few clear opportunities. Maybe, sans Ronaldo, they did not truly believe in themselves but the Portuguese conservatism was suffocating for the match as a spectacle and they had players – notably Renato Sanches and João Mário .– who would surely have benefited from letting off the handbrake.

Giroud’s only real attempt came shortly before his substitution but Patrício kept out the shot and produced an even better save in the 84th minute to turn away Sissoko’s powerful drive.

In between, Lloris clawed away Nani’s cross from beneath his crossbar and then caught Ricardo Quaresma’s follow-up effort. The game was belatedly opening up and André-Pierre Gignac, Giroud’s replacement, might have won the match in stoppage time after turning inside Pepe in the penalty area. He scuffed his shot against a post and the game moved into extra time.

Raphaël Guerreiro, Portugal’s left-back, struck the crossbar with a free-kick at the start of the second period and, a couple of minutes later, the ball was at the feet of Éder. His shot was struck with power and precision and Portugal had their glory. [myad]

Nigerian Christians Association Condemns Terror Attacks In Saudi Arabia, United States

CAN President SupoThe Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned the recent terrorist attacks in the United States of America and Saudi Arabia.
In a statement on Sunday, CAN President-elect and President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, Dr. Samson ‘Supo Ayokunle, called on those behind the attacks to desist, saying that no good thing can come out of the acts of violence.
The statement said: “Recently, the terrorists unleashed mayhem near a mosque in Saudi Arabia. On behalf of the out-going President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor and all Christians in Nigeria, we totally condemn this sacrilegious act. We urge those behind this act and other similar acts to desist from such because no good thing comes out of the acts of violence.
“Nobody should be deceived into believing that doing violence in the name of God would attract any eternal reward. Violence and all acts of cruelty against humanity would end up in eternal condemnation and everlasting punishment. We therefore sympathize with all Muslims all over the world over this unfortunate development.
Similarly, CAN condemns the separate brutality of policemen in Minnesota and Louisiana against two African-Americans which led to their premature death.
“Much more, the reprisal attacks on and killing of the policemen who were protecting the people doing peaceful protest against the continuous killings of black people in America was condemnable, unjustifiable and totally irrational. Two wrongs can never make a right.
“We urge the American government to do something to police brutality against all races in America because all lives matter. The parliament must do something to control gun possession so as to avoid in the future senseless killings like these and make America safer. Finally, we sympathize with the families of those killed in the three incidents and the American government and pray for fortitude to bear the loss.” [myad]

Yunusa, Alleged Abductor Of Ese Oruru, Freed On Bail, Returns To Kano

Yunusa Dahiru YellowThe alleged abductor of an under aged Bayelsa state girl, Ese Oruru, Yunusa Dahiru, is said to have been freed on bail and has returned to Kano, his home state.

Yunusa is facing a five-count charge of abduction, inducing by the use of deception and coercion illicit intercourse, sexual exploitation and unlawful carnal knowledge of Ese Oruru.

Lawyer to Yunusa, Kayode Olaosebikan, confirmed the release of his client on Sunday, adding that he  his people have taken him away.

“Yunusa left custody of the Okaka prison, Bayelsa State after spending over four months there,” a source said on Sunday evening.

It will be recalled that Yunusa’s legal team that includes a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, had battled unsuccessfully since March to secure his release from prison custody following the bail conditions given by Justice Ajiya Nganjiwa of the Federal High Court in Yenagoa.

Justice Nganjiwa had set a N3 million bail bond and two sureties in like sum, resident within the jurisdiction of the court as conditions for Mr. Dahiru’s release.

He had also ordered that one of the sureties must be a traditional title holder, while the second person must be a civil servant on Grade Level 12 or above.

The bail conditions also stipulated that the two sureties must submit their three-year tax clearance receipts and that the defense counsel must sign an undertaking that the accused would not jump bail.

However, the judge later relaxed the conditions after he was approached by Yunusa’s lawyers who said that they could not meet some of the bail conditions.

The court reduced the bail conditions to a level-nine civil servant and further granted the prayer of the defendant to also allow any traditional ruler from any community in the country to stand as surety.

Justice Nganjiwa had on Friday adjourned the trial to September 13 for further cross examination of Ese Oruru by Yunusa’s defense counsel. [myad]

20 Policemen Are Coming To Arrest Us, Ekiti Government Operatives Cry Out

Kayode Oso of Ekiti stateThe Ekiti State Government continues with its dramatic performance on Sunday, raising alarm that policemen would invade the state on Monday to effect what it called indiscriminate arrest of top officials of the government, leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as well as members of the State House of Assembly.

In a statement issued by the Special Assistant to the State Governor on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, the government, led by Governor Ayo Fayose, said that the arrests would be made based on frivolous petitions orchestrated by the All Progressives Congress (APC) over governorship election that the party lost two years ago.

The government alleged that 20 Policemen, to be led by one ACP Olusola Oke, a native of Isan Ekiti, hometown of the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, were already in Alagbon, Lagos ready to move to Ekiti by 9am on Sunday in three white coloured Toyota Hummer buses.

The government alleged that All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders like Femi Falana (SAN), Senator Babafemi Ojudu, Yinka Akerele and others were coordinating the invasion in their desperation to destabilise the State because of Governor Fayose’s perceived opposition to the inhuman policies of the federal government.

“We have been reliably informed that the latest onslaught against the PDP government of Mr. Ayodele Fayose is to begin on Monday, using the police to arrest top government officials, PDP leaders across the 16 local government areas and members of the House of Assembly.

“ACP Olusola Oke, who is to lead the over 20 policemen to carry out the operation is said to be a native of Isan Ekiti, hometown of the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr Kayode Fayemi. ACP Olusola Oke is equally the immediate past Assistant Commissioner in charge of Operations and now the AC X-Squad, FCID, Abuja.

“The operation is allegedly being funded by a former governor from the South South while a prominent aide of President Mohammadu Buhari is said to be directly coordinating.

“ACP Olusola Oke will be accompanied by CSP Ayodele, CSP Enang, four Inspectors and others.”

The government said that all attempts by the APC to return to power through the backdoor will fail, and that the party should rather prepare for 2018 instead of running from the Army, DSS, EFCC and now the police.

The government also cautioned the APC led federal government not to destroy democracy in the country by muzzling the opposition, even as it alerted the international community to take note of the danger facing democracy in the country. [myad]

I Will Revenge My Father’s Murder, Son Of Osama Bin Laden Vows

Hamza bin Laden

The son of slain al Qaeda leader, Osama bin Laden has vowed to revenge against the United States for assassinating his father.

According to an audio message posted online, Hamza bin Laden promised to continue the global militant group’s fight against the U.S. and its allies in the 21-minute speech entitled: “We Are All Osama.”

Hamza, now in his mid-twenties, was at his father’s side in Afghanistan before the 9/11 attacks and spent time with him in Pakistan after the U.S.-led invasion pushed much of al Qaeda’s senior leadership there, according to the Brookings Institution.

Hamza was quoted by the SITE Intelligence Group as saying: “we will continue striking you and targeting you in your country and abroad in response to your oppression of the people of Palestine, Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Somalia and the rest of the Muslim lands that did not survive your oppression.

“As for the revenge by the Islamic nation for Sheikh Osama, may Allah have mercy on him, it is not revenge for Osama the person but it is revenge for those who defended Islam.”

Osama bin Laden was killed at his Pakistani hideout by U.S. commandos in 2011 in a major blow to the militant group which carried out the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

Documents recovered from bin Laden’s compound and published by the U.S. last year alleged that his aides tried to reunite the militant leader with Hamza, who had been held under house arrest in Iran.

Introduced by the organization’s new chief Ayman al-Zawahiri in an audio message last year, Hamza provides a younger voice for the group whose ageing leaders have struggled to inspire militants around the world galvanized by Islamic State.

“Hamza provides a new face for al Qaeda, one that directly connects to the group’s founder.

He is an articulate and dangerous enemy,” according to Bruce Riedel of Brookings. [myad]

Help, We Are Losing Lecturers To Greener Pastures – Kogi University ASUU

Yahaya Bello 5

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kogi State University chapter, has raised alarm that the university is fast losing qualified teaching staff to greener pastures as a result of many factors.

The chairman of the chapter, Dr. Oluwagbemiga Aina who spoke to news men on Sunday in Lokoja, said that the exodus of the lecturers is adversely impacting on the quality of teaching and researching as well as other academic activities in the university.

Dr. Aina said that the lecturers are leaving in droves because of delay in payment of salaries and other issues such as nonpayment of outstanding Earned Academic Allowance from 2009 to 2014.

According to him, no fewer than 50 qualified lecturers had left the University for Greener Pastures, adding: “where there are delays in payment of salaries, the chances of corruption is rife.”

The chairman accused the government of failure to pay N1.1 billion outstanding arrears of earned academic allowances till date,.

“After the initial payment of N125 million, the government reneged on its promised monthly instalmental payment of N25 million.”

He appealed to Governor Yahaya Bello, the Visitor to the university, to intervene and save the university from collapse, adding that he should move mast to resolve all outstanding issues involving workers and the government.

Commenting on the two months old strike embarked upon by lecturers of the institution, Aina vowed that the action would be sustained until all their entitlements are paid.

“In fact, the resolution of congress is that the action will be invoked anytime delay in salary payment goes beyond the seventh day of the succeeding month.”

He debunked claims that members of the union requested for tax exemption, saying that they only requested for waiver and rebate to make up for the huge tax they paid in the past.

The ASUU Chairman commended Governor Yahaya Bello for summoning the courage to sanitize the state civil service.

“No doubt, the state is bedeviled by rot and corruption of varying magnitudes and dimensions. The rot in the civil service appeared to have defied solutions until recently,” he said. [myad]

Dangote To Wealthy Nigerians: This Is The Time To Show Empathy For IDPs

IDP CampsThe President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has called on well-meaning Nigerians to rise up to the occasion and assist government in ameliorating their situation.
He emphasized that this is the time that wealthy Nigerians should stand up and be counted to assist thousands of fellow citizens that are languishing in the camps due to insufficient facilities and food items.
The business mogul, who recently donated N2 billion, and millions of Naira worth of food items on behalf of the Dangote Foundation to the IDPs when he visited some of the camps in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, called on Nigerians to have empathy for those in the camps.
Speaking during a visit by the North East Development Coalition to his office at the weekend, Dangote said that he was particularly moved by the reports of deaths and malnutrition, which have hit the camps.
“We cannot open our eyes and allow our fellow citizens continue to suffer like this for no fault of theirs. We need to partner with the government and help those in the camps.
“It is obvious government alone cannot cater for this people, not even at this time when there is a paucity fund.
“These people need our help and with what God has provided for us, we need to help them.”
Dangote described the situation in the entire North East as requiring all possible humanitarian assistance.
Within a spate of five years, the total amount donated to various camps of Internally Displaced Persons across the country by the Dangote Foundation has grown significantly to N6. 3 billion. [myad]
