Governor Umahi Cautions Against Reprisal On Fulani Herdsmen In East

governor UmahiGovernor David Nweze Umahi of Ebonyi State has cautioned against calls for reprisal attacks on Fulani herdsmen in the South-East.

Reacting to criticisms on the social media that he pledged to create grazing fields for herdsmen during his meeting with traditional rulers and security chiefs in the state on Tuesday, Umahi said he had done the right thing by asking that all armed cattle rustlers should be disarmed.

Umahi said that during a stakeholder’s summit on rice revolution in Abakaliki on Wednesday, it was agreed that provision of grazing routes in the state be created and not grazing fields as claimed by his detractors.

“On learning that some herdsmen had built huts near the permanent site of the Ebonyi State University in Ezzamgbo, he directed the state Police Commissioner, Peace Abdallah and the Commissioner for Education, Prof. John Ekeh, to ensure that the herdsmen were peacefully moved out the area.

“There is no way cows can be allowed to stay where human beings, especially students are living. The CP and the commissioner should find a peaceful way of moving out of there within seven days.”

The   governor said that it was not in the best interest of the Igbo for anyone to call for reprisal against Fulani herdsmen for the recent killings in Enugu State.

“The Igbo are also nomadic in commerce and are scattered across the country,” he stated and appealed to all those who want   herdsmen to be sent away to think about the safety of the Igbo living and doing business in other parts of   the country.

Umahinadvised that since “our people that the country is very tensed now, let us be careful in making inflammatory statements that could endanger the lives of Nigerians.”

“Instead of us being worried about live or don’t live, it is better to use our energy to think of alternatives on how we can live in peace with them,” the governor added.

He said that the Police has been directed to disarm all herdsmen in the State. [myad]

Nigeria University Lecturers May Go For 5-Year Jail For Sexual Harassment

LecturersNigerian Senate has made a move to slam 5- year jail term without any option of fine for any university lecturer found guilty of harassing female students sexually.

A bill to that effect titled: “Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Institutions Bill 2016,” co-sponsored by the senators, passed first reading in the senate yesterday. The bill was sponsored by Senator Ovie Omo- Agege with 45 others.

It seeks for enactment of an Act to Make Provisions for the Prohibition of Sexual Harassment of Students by Educators in Tertiary Educational Institutions in Nigeria and for Matters Connected Therewith, 2016.

Omo-Agege who briefed newsmen after the passage of the bill to second reading said that the major intension of the bill, was to restore morality, discipline and sanity between male educators and female students in higher institutions in the country.

He explained that the bill when passed, would serve as the needed legal framework of domesticating the honour code existing between lecturers and students in tertiary institutions in United States of America into our own penal code here.

He proposed the bill after careful and detailed research on the menace of sexual harassment of female students by male lecturers in our Universities and other tertiary institutions.

He said the need for such law was imperative, so as to stop the trend of turning the institutions from citadel of knowledge to prostitution centers.

“After careful and detailed research on the menace over the years, our position as proposed in this bill , is that since the female students being negatively influenced  by male lecturers into sexual relationship  are not capable of giving voluntary consent to that arrangement, there is need for potent law to stop the immorality”, he said.

The senators added in the proposed Act that penalty for the Offences listed shall be 5-year jail term for any convicted person.

“Any person who commits any of the acts specified in section 4 of this Act is guilty of an offence and shall, on conviction, be sentenced to imprisonment of up to 5 years but not less than 2 years without any option of fine.” [myad]
