Sultan Angry With Road Safety Marshals For Treating Big Men Drivers With Kid’s Glove

SultanThe Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad III is angry with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for its failure over the years to arrest and prosecute drivers of big men in the society, who often engage in dangerous driving on the roads.

Speaking at the 6th Annual Lecture Series organized by the FRSC today, Tuesday in Abuja, Abubakar III said that convoy drivers of highly placed individuals in Nigeria are treated like sacred cows, as they drive dangerously on the roads, thereby endangering themselves and the lives of other road users.

The Sultan, who was the Chairman of the occasion, called for a new FRSC that would be alive to its statutory responsibilities on the roads even s he advocated capacity building for the personnel of the FRSC who work on the road to ensure safety.

He said that they should be trained both psychologically and mentally, adding that Nigeria has lost more lives through road traffic crashes than air crashes.

The Sultan noted that Nigerian citizens reserve the right to live safely, adding that all hands must be on deck to ensure road safety.

Also speaking, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, expressed the commitment of the present administration to guarantee safety and security of Nigerians.

Lawal said that President Muhammadu Buhari had earlier directed the drivers of all Federal establishments to undergo training under the FRSC, saying that the administration would work assiduously to embark on massive construction of roads across the country in a bid to mitigate the spate of road traffic crashes.

He acknowledged that road safety is a shared responsibility, even as he called on the three tiers of government to collaborate to reduce the carnage on the roads.

In his lecture, Akinwunmi Ambode, the Governor of Lagos State, who spoke on the “State Road Traffic Management Efforts: The LASTMA Experience,” called for the creation of enabling environment for law enforcement agencies to operate effectively.

Ambode, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Tunji Bello, also advocated the provision of legal framework for the enforcement agencies to ensure effectiveness in the management of road traffic in the states.

Using the Lagos experience, Ambode said that Lagos lost N42 billion worth of labour on annual basis as a result of chaotic traffic situation in the past before the introduction of LASTMA. [myad]

Sabotage: Bauchi Governor Sacks 4 Management Staff Of Education Board

Bauchi Gov AbubakarGovernor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar has approved the immediate removal of four management staff of the Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) as a result of what was considered an act of sabotage. The affected staff members were fingered in the delay of the payment of staff of the Local education Authorities’ salaries in the State and the resultant restiveness created by the delay.

Those affected are the Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Ya’u Garba; Director Administration and Human Resources, Alhaji Haruna Bako; Director Finance and Accounts, Alhaji Umar Umaru Jaja and the Internal Auditor, Alhaji Adamu Mohammed.

Their withdrawal comes as the workers’ verification exercise comes to a climax with a clear manifestation of negligence of duty and uncultured behavior of the withdrawn management staff of the Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB.

A letter signed by the Head of the State Civil Service, Mr. Abdon Gin also says the affected management staff concealed some vital information to both the “new Chairman of the Board and some members of the Bauchi State House of Assembly while on oversight function”.

“This was pertaining to remittance of funds made to the Board for the payment of teachers’ salaries for which adequate funds were released by the Government for immediate payment to all the verified teachers under the Board”, Mr. Gin further explained.

The removal of the management staff therefore becomes pertinent considering the setback their actions have caused the Bauchi State Government’s commitment to ensure that all verified staff were paid their salary entitlements without delay.

The Head of Service, Mr. Abdon Gin advised all staff to ensure that they carry responsibilities assigned to them diligently and effectively as “doing otherwise will attract very severe consequences.” [myad]

Terrorists Sponsors Must Be Fished Out – President Buhari Insists

terrorism1President Muhammadu Buhari has called on his fellow African leaders to go after the sponsors of terrorists, whose attacks across African nations bore similar trademarks of intense planning, strong alliances and proper financial sponsorship.
He insisted too that such sponsors must be thoroughly investigated and reversed.
“Terrorist activities always have financial sponsorships and this can be seen in their acquisition of weapons, their movements and other logistics.
“Here in Nigeria, we saw that Boko Haram had strong material resources and they had a close link to ISIL.”
President Buhari who spoke today at a farewell audience at the State House with the High Commissioner of Kenya to Nigeria, Mr. Tom Amolo insisted that ending insurgency in Africa will require stronger collaboration and commitment from governments, financial institutions and security agencies in tracking the sponsorship of terrorist activities.
The President said that African governments must make efforts to dissuade the younger generation from joining the ranks of terrorist groups, who explore youthful minds for suicide bombings.
“We need a whole cultural orientation in order to succeed against terrorism.”
This is even as the outgoing High Commissioner said he enjoyed his stay in Nigeria and still looked forward to returning to the country in the near future. [myad]

None Payment Of Salaries: Abia Workers Place Curse On Governor Ikpeazu

Abia governor IkpeazuWorkers of the 17 local government areas in Abia state have decried the nonpayment of their February and March 2016 salaries and have raised curse on the state governor, Okezie Ikpeazu.
The workers, some of who had taken loans from commercial banks, using their salaries as collateral, lamented that the none payment of the salaries has brought untold hardship to them and their families.
The workers, who raised curse on Governor Ikpeazu, said that none payment of their salaries have exposed them to the risk of banks always seizing any money paid into their accounts.
The workers feared that even as at the 4th day of the new month of April, there are no signs that salaries would be paid in the next one week. They blamed the situation on what they described as misplacement of priorities by the Ikpeazu led administration.
“The governor has not been fair to local government workers. He is always paying in arrears. December 2015 salary was paid in the first week of February; January salary was paid in March. February salary has not been paid, this is April, there is no hope that we will be paid this week. How can a worker plan and achieve any target with this system? Our leave allowances have been withdrawn. Yet we hear he (the governor) collects N750 million every month. Yet, he finds it difficult to pay us the pittance as salaries. The saying goes that a worker is worthy his wages, but this is not true in Abia state. Only God will judge our case with the governor.”
Meanwhile, an official of one of the old generation banks hinted that they have been directed by their headquarters in Lagos to stop extending loans to council workers because of the none payment of salaries leading to the creation of bad debts. [myad]

‘Buy Nigeria’ Campaign: It’s Time To Stop Talking But Act – Osinbajo

Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo
Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said that Nigeria should now go beyond talking about made-in-Nigeria and buy-Nigeria to real action.
He stressed that, overall: “it is up to all of us to see that this particular initiative works. We have talked enough.”
The Vice President spoke today at the Presidential Villa, Abuja during a meeting with industry stakeholders and members of the Implementation Committee on the National Cotton, Textile and Garment Policy.
He made it clear that patronage of made in Nigeria products by Nigerians is important and can contribute to the revival of the cotton, textile and garment industries which is the goal of the Buhari administration.
“Nigerians buying Nigerian products is very important and it goes beyond the symbolism of wearing Nigerian-made dresses. It is important for our economy and well-being.”
Professor Osinbajo noted that the challenge of smuggling of foreign textile materials into the country had to be tackled.
Members of the Implementation Committee, composed of both government officials and industry stakeholders, had earlier highlighted a number of strategies for the revival of the cotton, textile and garments industries, including the promotion of Nigeria-made dresses among others.
The Committee is proposing a “Wear Naija Day,” where public officials and employees of corporate organisations would all wear locally made fabrics.
The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, had articulated a new policy to revamp the industries through a number of interventions, including battling smuggling in order to attain a 15% reduction by next year, facilitating access to funding for the sector, addressing the challenges of energy, lifting the ban on importation of finished products and using the duties and levies raised therefrom to support the industries, among several other strategies.
Earlier, the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mrs Aisha Abubakar who attended the meeting said that the ministry came up with the Cotton, Textile and Garment policy (CTG) in order to provide a suit of interventions holistically across the value chain, including encouraging local patronage, controlling smuggling, production of improved seedling, cost of energy, cost of funds, training and upgrading as well as
modernization of infrastructure.
She said that past attempts to revive the industries failed because they addressed only the issue of funding.
Leading the stakeholders to the meeting was Comrade Issa Aremu, the General Secretary of the National Union of Garment and Textile Workers of Nigeria, who praised the Buhari presidency of “walking the talk.”
He said that the APC presidential ticket had promised to revamp the industry during the electioneering campaigns last year. [myad]

Lagos APC Describes PDP As Silly Rants Of Frustrated Losers

PDP LagosThe Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has described the call by Lagos PDP for the Code of Conduct Tribunal to re-open the case the Jonathan led government and the PDP instigated against the National Leader of APC and firmer Lagos governor, Asuwaju Bola Tinubu as the silly rants of frustrated losers desperately splashing mud to tar others when they are facing weighty corruption cases. The party said that Lagos PDP and indeed the entire PDP are suffering acute Tinubu-phobia borne out of the fact that Asiwaju Tinubu constitutes the greatest nightmare for PDP rank and file given his prosecution of the defeat of the PDP last year.
In a statement in Lagos by the State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Joe Igbokwe, the party lambasted Lagos PDP as a spent gathering of losers who face serious indictment for their role in the monumental corruption that marked the extinct woeful PDP governance in the country. It said that seeing no future in its woe-ridden dream of ever being allowed to raid Lagos, as it did other parts of the country for 16 sorrowful years, Lagos PDP now splashes mud to ensure every other person, especially its single greatest nightmare, Asiiwaju Bola Tinubu is muddled in its noxious corrupt acts.
“Let us recall that the erstwhile Jonathan regime and the PDP, gripped with fear of Asiwaju’s redoubtable political strength and capacity, cooked up a hollow charge that Asiwaju maintained foreign accounts while he was governor of Lagos State. Let us recall that these fonts of corruption instigated a charge against Asiwaju in the Code of Conduct Tribunal and that the case went its full course and was dismissed for what it was; a hollow political plot to cage the rising political profile of Asiwaju and nothing more. “Let us recall also that, faced with the bareness of their plot, the PDP and Jonathan government took no further action on the case.
“Nigerians should recall the devilish and very elaborate efforts by the PDP to tarnish the hard earned integrity and reputation of Asiwaju on the belief that their gossips and title tatling will arrest Asiwaju’s resolve and capacity to see to the end of the rouge PDP regime in Nigeria. We should also recall that the Jonathan and the PDP government went to the extent of cooking up a devilish, dangerous and crooked sallad of lies, forgeries, fabrications and outright falsehood against the Asiwaju and baked it into the infamous evil documentary for which the chief purveyor of that deliberate mischief, the African Independent Television has publicly apologised to the Asiwaju for that wicked slander. “Let us also recall that all these desperate measures aimed at be smearing the reputation of Asiwaju, the single greatest nightmare of the PDP, did not prevent the massive defeat the PDP suffered in the country last year.
“So pitiable and equally despicable is the Lagos PDP, a collection of disparate free loaders who made noisome boast of taking over Lagos during the last election and which went further to finance an extensive campaign of hate, brigandage and character assassination against their single greatest dread; Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. That the PDP failed woefully is not news but that its leaders have been fingered in high profile cases of stealing and looting in the wake of the present anti corruption war such that some of them have fled into ignominious exile. That it is building yet another salacious demand for the reopening of a political hatchet case it prosecuted against Asiwaju shows that Lagos PDP seriously needs help for it to overcome the debilitating loss it has continually suffered in Lagos but also the calamity that befell it when it lost its access to the federal treasury that had financed PDP’s flight of folly in Lagos since 1999.
“We advise Lagos PDP to not only quit making silly and senseless demands but concern itself with explaining the roles its leaders played in the ensuing corruption scandals that formed the primary business of the PDP in power. We urge Lagos PDP to stop its silly acts of distraction but warm up to a perpetual night in the cold as the PDP faces extinction in the country by its notorious acts of corruption in the years ahead.” [myad]

President Buhari Advocates Dialogue To Resolve Political Crisis In Burundi

Buhari and Pierre Nkurunziza of BurundiPresident Muhammadu Buhari has asked the people and Government of Burundi to explore dialogue in resolving the current political differences in the country.
The President, who received the former Burundian President, Mr. Pierre Buyoya, at the State House, assured that Nigeria would continue to support peace processes in the continent through the African Union (AU), which had already intervened in Burundi.
The President said since President Pierre Nkurunziza rejected the proposal of a “stabilizing force from the AU, we can’t impose it on him, but we will continue to opt for dialogue.
“Nigeria has been playing a key role in the continent through the AU. We participated fully in ensuring a truce in Mali, and we want citizens to enjoy the impact of the truce, although the terrorists are not helping matters.
“Nigeria is always committed to regional and continental peace, and we will continue to do our best.”

Bauchi To Benefit From The US Reconstruction Of Northeast

Bauchi Gov AbubakarBauchi State will be part of the beneficiaries of the United States of America’s reconstruction and rehabilitation programme, scheduled to start soon in the northeast region of Nigeria after about seven year Boko Haram insurgency that ravaged and crippled the socioeconomic activities of the region.
The Bauchi state Governor, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar who was on President Muhammadu Buhari’s entourage to a World Nuclear Energy Conference, in the United States, told news men on arrival in Abuja, said that the reconstruction programme is coming after fruitful talks between President Buhari and President Barak Obama as well as other leaders in the US.
He said that the leaders have assured Nigeria of the readiness of the United States to contribute to the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the crises-plagued region.
As neighbors with close historical, cultural and other social ties, “whatever affects Borno, Yobe and Adamawa naturally affects Bauchi state,” the Governor said.
He disclosed that there are over two million estimated internally displaced persons in Bauchi state since the outbreak of the insurgency in the northeastern states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states and the crisis in Plateau state.
The Governor said the planned reconstruction and rehabilitation programme covers infrastructure like schools, hospitals and roads as well as the economy.
Governor Mohammed Abdullahi while acknowledging the pains that the change agenda of the present administration has brought to the people, urged citizens of the state to cooperate with the government as the policies will soon begin to bear fruitful results.
He explained that the incidence of ghost workers in government payroll which is being used to siphon government treasury is not only peculiar to Bauchi state, stressing that paucity of funds to execute meaningful projects in government coffers necessitated the workers’ verification exercise.
He therefore solicited for continuous support and prayers.
Governor Mohammed assured that with the passage of the 2016 budget and his assent, the State will begin to see change in the distribution of social infrastructures and improved economic activities within available resources to the government. [myad]

Young Man Lands In Police Net For Sneaking Into College’s Female Hostel

Love in schoolA young Igbo man whose name was given simply as Ugochukwu, is now cooling off in Kuje police detention room for sneaking into the hostel of the Government Girls Science Secondary School, Kuje in the Nigeria Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
A police source hinted that the young man acquired the school visitor’s card from his girl friend, who is a final year student of the school (name withheld), and used the card to gain entry into the school premises, where he spent the whole day with the girl.
The source explained that the female student, a Muslim, had stolen the visitor’s card from her father’s pocket during the last vacation, and gave it to the young man to use in gaining entrance to the school premises.
It was gathered that the school security personnel (gate men) had denied the girl’s father from entering the school premises because he could not produce visitor’s card, but that as soon as the girl’s boyfriend arrived, he was ushered into the premises on producing the required card.
Luck ran out on the two lovers when a senior teaching staff of the school, who saw the girl’s father at the gate, asked the gate men to allow him into the premises “on self-recognition.”
The source said that the girl had hid the intruding boyfriend in her room with the help of her room-mates and that immediately her father left, she settled down with the young man to eat the food her father took to her.
“It was when the young man made to leave the premises late in the evening that the vigilant gate men stopped him at the gate, subjected him to interrogation and eventually discovered that he was an intruder,” the source hinted.
It was gathered that the school authority, embarrassed by the development, promptly handed the young man to the police, even as the authority sent the girl parking out of the school premises.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Kuje was not immediately available to comment on the issue, but a senior officer confirmed that the young man is in detention and that investigation is ongoing. [myad]
