The United States of America has assured Nigerian government that it would assist in tracing the returning to Nigeria, billions of dollars which politicians and other public officers stole and kept in the banks there.

The U.S secretary of State, Mr. John Kerry said: “it’s not easy to hide that amount of money and we are pretty good in tracing them.”

The U.S Scribe was responding to President Muhammadu Buhari, who sought for the assistance of the government of that country to repatriate billions of dollars which some Nigerians had over time, stashed in various banks there. Buhari is currently in America, attending the security Summit in which over 60 world leaders are also attending.

The Secretary of State said that he was fully aware that the stolen Nigerian  funds were in “billions of dollars,” asuring President Buhari that relevant United States Government Officials will meet with the Chairman of Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to discuss further cooperation in that regard.

Mr. Kerry  applauded the Buhari Administration’s success in rolling back the Boko Haram insurgency, saying that the United States will continue to give Nigeria all possible support to ensure that the terrorist sect is finally eliminated as a threat to national and regional security.

The Secretary of State  also praised President Buhari’s clear order that Nigeria’s Armed Forces must show greater regard for the  human rights of persons in the theatre of operations against Boko Haram.

Buhari had told the U.S Scribe that his administration will continue to vigorously prosecute its war against corruption, President Buhari sought and received an assurance from Mr. Kerry that the United States Government will facilitate the repatriation of all stolen Nigerian funds found within the American banking system.

“It will greatly help our country if you assist us to recover all our stolen funds which we can establish to be within your financial system,” the President told Mr. Kerry.

President Buhari acknowledged that the United States has been of great help to his administration in the retraining and re-equipping of the Nigerian Armed Forces that has resulted in the significant success already achieved against Boko Haram, adding that the Federal Government is now working very hard to restore full normalcy in the North Eastern states.

“Boko Haram no longer holds any local government area. We are reconstructing damaged facilities and preparing the police to take over and reassert civilian control over areas affected by the insurgency,” the President told Mr. Kerry. [myad]

20,000 Niger Rice Farmers To Benefit From CBN N1.8 Billion

FarmlandTwenty thousand rice farmers in Niger State would be assisted with a N1.8 billion, under the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Anchor Borrowers Programme in the next four years.

He gave the assurance that all the cooperatives have been properly verified to authenticate their individual membership of AGAN.

In her remarks, the CBN representative, Mrs. Margaret Sulaiman, tasked stakeholders to tap from the success story of the scheme recorded in Kebbi and Kano states?.

Sulaiman urged farmers to be focused and committed to rice production, noting that this would go a long way in alleviating poverty among the teeming unemployed youths in the country.

The programme is the Rice Value Chain Investment Project Multi-stakeholders’ meeting involving the Niger State Ministry of Agriculture, IFAD, CBN and AGAN. [myad]

World Bank Proposes $800 Million To Rebuild Areas Devastated By Boko Haram

Baga attack by Boko HaramThe World Bank has earmarked $800 million to support the rebuilding of the infrastructure destroyed in the North East by the Boko Haram insurgency.

The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Fatma Samoura, made the disclosure on Thursday in Maiduguri during a courtesy visit to Gov Kashim Shettima.

Samoura, who is also a UN Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative, said the UN is scaling up its presence in Borno and other North Eastern states ravaged by the insurgency.

“Yesterday, we had a long discussion with the World Bank team that came from Washington to attend the workshop.

“The workshop is for validating the year findings of the recovery and peace-building assessment.

“They have promised to leverage 800 million dollars for the North East to response to recovery, rehabilitation, de-mining, waste management and debris processing for the North East of Nigeria.’

The UN representative regretted that the organization is encountering some challenges in mobilizing resources for Nigeria in view of the humanitarian crises in other parts of the world.

“As we all know, the Syrian crisis that is affecting Europe is also taking a heavy toll in terms of funding from our traditional donors.

“We are trying our best to ensure that our advocacy and our communication strategy are up to the level where we will be receiving more attention from the donor community.

“The humanitarian response plan, as we speak, is just 10 per cent funded, meaning we have only received 24 million dollars.

“This is out of 248 million dollars budgeted for the North East of Nigeria for 2016,” she said.

Samoura, however, pledged that the UN would continue to complement the World Bank and the EU supports to address the root causes of poverty and exclusion in the North East.

“The UN will be on your side in order to address the humanitarian situation.

“The UN will also support the Borno Government in its work on recovery and rehabilitation for the safe return of the IDPs back to their areas of origin,” she said.

Samoura said her visit to Maiduguri was to demonstrate the sympathy of the UN to the appalling situation of the 1.8 million people who have been displaced by insurgency.

She commended the strong leadership and commitment of the governor to finding sustainable solutions to safe and voluntary return of the IDPs to their places of origin.

Responding, Gov Shettima commended the UN for standing by the government and people of Borno in identifying the root causes and also finding lasting solutions to the insurgency.

Shettima, however, described that the $800 million pledge by the World Bank as grossly inadequate in view of the enormous challenges left behind by the insurgency.

“It is in the interest of humanity to rally round Nigeria over Boko Haram. The developed world gave Turkey two billion dollars to resettle refugees from Syria.

“There are about two million IDPs from Borno and 20 Local Government Areas were overran by Boko Haram and there is food crisis now in the state,” he said.

He, however, commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his support to Borno and victims of insurgency.

Ex PDP Senate Leader, Ndoma-Egba, Drums Support For Buhari

Senate Leader, Ndoma Egba
Senate Leader, Ndoma Egba

Former Leader of the Senate, Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN), has drummed support for President Muhammadu Buhari, asking Nigerians to support him and be patience.

Ndoma-Egba said with the necessary support from Nigerians, the administration will succeed in getting the country out of the economic difficulties it is grappling with.

Ndoma-Egba made the call in Calabar today during an interview session with journalists on some issues of national importance.

Though the former senate leader admitted that Nigerians were going through some hard times,  he pointed out that whatever pains they were passing through was ephemeral because of the reforms of the rot in the nation’s economy that has accumulated for years.
“I concede that there is a lot of hardship, but that hardship is not something that is created overnight. It is an accumulated circumstance.

“Things cannot get better without them getting worse. It’s like a seed when planted; it gets rotten before it geminates. We are in that process of germinating. So, the long and short of my summation is that we need to give support to President Buhari, and show some patience,” Ndoma-Egba said. [myad]

Abia Governor Sends His Commissioners To Farm

Abia governor IkpeazuAbia state governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has ordered all members of the state executive council to go back to farm.

At the quarterly press conference on the activities of his administration today, the governor said that the agricultural revolution initiative of his administration entails that farming must be embraced by those in government.

“All members of the executive council will engage in farming,” he emphasized.”

However Governor Ikpeazu did not specify if any sanction awaits any commissioner that failed to heed the directive to own a farm.

The governor explained that it was necessary for government to live by example and practice what it preaches thereby encouraging youths to go into farming.

“If oil likes, let it fall or stand, we are going to chart a course for ourselves. We have to diversify.”

As part of the move to revitalize agriculture, Ikpeazu said that the state would embark on massive production of oil palm, cassava, and cocoa, a cash crop that Abia was ranked as number six producing state in the country. [myad]

I can’t Be Stampeded To Sign 2016 Budget, Buhari Vows

Buhari 4President Muhammadu Buhari has made it clear that he cannot be stampeded to sign into law, the 2016 federal budget which was transmitted to him shortly before he took off to the United States of America for a Summit.

The President insisted that he would have to critically review the Appropriation Bill passed by the National Assembly before assenting to it.

Speaking at a meeting with the United States Secretary of State, Mr. John Kerry said today in Washington DC, President Buhari said that in view of the controversial alteration and padding of the budget proposals, he needed to review the appropriation bill to be certain that its contents tallied with the authentic budget proposal presented to the National Assembly.

“Some bureaucrats removed what we put in the proposal and replaced it with what they wanted. I have to look at the bill that has been passed by the National Assembly, ministry by ministry, to be sure that what has been brought back for me to sign is in line with our original submission,” the President said.[myad]

Nigeria’s Mohammed Barkindo May Be Next OPEC Secretary General

BarkindoMohammed Barkindo, former group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), may emerge as the secretary-general of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Nigerian government is believed to have nominated him for the post.

Barkindo worked at NNPC until 2010 and served as acting secretary-general of the OPEC in 2006, as well as representing Nigeria at the group.

OPEC has tried unsuccessfully for more than three years to find a replacement for current Secretary-General, Abdalla El-Badri, who was due to stand down in 2012 after serving two terms in the role.

At OPEC’s last meeting in December, El-Badri’s term was extended until July.

Political rivalries between Saudi Arabia, Iran and Iraq have prevented OPEC from settling on candidates that each of those nations proposed. The disagreement over choosing a successor flared again at the December 4 meeting as the slump in oil prices heightened tensions over the direction of the group’s policy.

Barkindo “would be well placed in the secretary-general role and could offer a smooth transition out of the current deadlock, enabling the OPEC secretariat to resume operations at full strength,” said John Hall, chairman of consultants Alfa Energy.

“He knows how OPEC operates and is known to many delegates” said Hall, who has worked in the oil industry for more than 40 years.” [myad]

Hackers Shut Down 20 Angolan Government Websites

HackerHackers have shut down about 20 Angolan government websites after 17 young activists were arrested for allegedly plotting a rebellion against President Jose Eduardo dos Santos’ government.

The websites were hacked by a Portuguese branch of Anonymous, an international hacking group. The group provided a list of the sites it had taken down on Facebook. At the time of reporting, many of the websites were still down.

The 17 youths arrested, including Angolan rapper, Luaty Beirao, who were sentenced to between two and eight-and-a-half years in prison.

Human rights groups have criticized the harsh sentences for the activists, who were arrested in June after discussing a book about non-violent resistance. The accused maintain that they are peaceful protestors merely calling on their president to step down.

Mr. dos Santos has ruled Angola since 1979. [myad]

Senator Akpabio, PDP Chieftain, Defends APC On Economic Downturn

AkpabioThe Senate Minority Leader and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Godswill Akpabio, has defended the All Progressives Congress (APC) Federal Government on the current economic downturn.

Akpabio who spoke to journalists in Arochukwu, Abia State, Akpabio said that the country’s current economic challenge was a global phenomenon orchestrated by the steady fall in oil prices.
The two-term of Akwa Ibom state governor under PDP, called for diversification of the economy, adding that the global economic meltdown is being felt more by Nigerians because the country runs a mono-economy built around oil.
He enjoined the Federal Government to pay attention to other sectors of the economy like mining, agricultural and entrepreneurship ventures, as well as foreign direct investment to boost the country’s revenue base.
“So, what has happened here is that with the massive failure, what we call oil glut in the market, the oil price has reduced below what we expected in the last 20 years. That automatically has affected our economy.
“It has nothing to do with which administration is in power. It has something to do with resources to be able to deliver the dividend of democracy.”
The former Governor admitted that the effect of the harsh economy has been harsh on the citizenry, but called for patience from Nigerians even as he solicited support for the present administration in the interest of the country.
“The country belongs to all of us and if the country collapses on our heads, it means that we bequeath nothing to our children.” [myad]
