Shake Up Looms In NTA, FRCN, NAN, Radio Nigeria, Others

Lai Mohammed 2The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has announced the looming shake up in the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and other federal government owned media houses as a way of repositioning them for greater efficiency.

The Minister who spoke when he received the National Executive Committee of the Radio, Television and Theatre Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU) on a courtesy visit in Abuja, said that the government media organizations have to be retooled to provide compelling contents that will make them attractive to viewers and advertisers.

“As long as we do not improve on the quality of NTA, and other public media, we cannot compete with others. We need to restructure, we need to reinvent NTA, FRCN and all our other publicly-owned media because that is the only way we can compete favourably with other broadcasting outfits.”

Alhaji Mohammed reiterated that under his watch, no public media organization would deny access to the political opposition but emphasized that the media, especially the broadcast outfits, should always adhere strictly to the provisions of the Broadcasting Code in the performance of their duties.

The Minister assured that the Federal Government is committed to the diversification of the economy through an organized and coordinated approach to mainstream culture, tourism and agriculture into the economy.

“Agriculture is one area where our diversification is going to be felt but what we have done is that we are not just talking about agriculture in the abstract. We are picking a few crops and a few items that we intend to be self-sufficient in and these items are today taking a large chunk of our foreign exchange. So in diversifying in agriculture, we are linking it to the entire economy,” he said.

The Minister told RATTAWU that he has been studying the minutes of their meetings with the government on improved remuneration package for its members and promised to continue to engage the stakeholders in that regard.

Earlier, the President of RATTAWU, Dr. Yemisi Bamgbose, commended the Buhari administration for the successes it had recorded in the fight against corruption and insurgency and urged the government to extend the same vigour to revamping the nation’s economy.

He also spoke on the need to diversify the economy, improve the remuneration of media workers, curb the instability in the leadership of the public media and ensure their independence.

Dr. Bamgbose called for the review of the law t hat empowers Local Governments to collect radio licence fees because, he said, the third tier of government has no input in broadcasting. [myad]

Soldiers, Suspected Cultists In Gun Battle In Ogoni Land, 3 Dead

Cultists in Ogoni landGunshots were still being held in Yeghe, a community of Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers and community of ex-militant leader Solomon Ndigbara, alias Osama bin Laden in the early hours of today where the military is currently carrying out an operation.

Three persons are alleged to have died after suspected cultists clashed with soldiers in Yeghe and Bori, the headquarters of Khana Local Government Area in Ogoniland.

Residents of the community fled their homes yesterday after a clash between soldiers and suspected cultists.

Eyewitnesses said the clash between the suspected cultists and the military led to sporadic shooting and the destruction of the Liaison office of Senator Magnus Abe, All Progressives Congress (APC), Rivers South East Senatorial candidate in Bori, the headquarters of Khana Local Government Area.

Austin Sor, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Gokana Local Government Area, said that three persons are feared dead following the clash between soldiers and suspected cultists and that the whole area is tense.

Sor accused the military of invading the home of Ndigbara, burning the house and destroying his properties.

“As I speak with you, three persons have been confirmed dead and three persons are in the hospital. I am on my way to hospital for the treatment of a pregnant woman who, while running away from the shooting fell and it has been confirmed that she lost the unborn baby. I am going to the private hospital in Sogho where the doctors are to operate on her to evacuate the baby. The other three have been confirmed dead and have been taken to the mortuary,” Sor said.

The 2 Brigade Spokesman, Captain Eli Lazarus, has promised that the army will brief the Press on the development in some Ogoni communities.

Senator Abe has accused Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state to have instigated the violence in Gokana LGA and Khana by the provocative speech he made against his candidacy in the rerun election where he urged Ogoni people not to vote for him and should do everything to stop him from going to the Senate.

Abe also alleged that Governor Wike had accused him of working against his administration so that a state of emergency would declare in the state.

On the burning of his liaison office in Bori, Abe said: “If that is one of the sacrifices I have to make for peace to reign in Ogoni and the state, I am prepared to make. But those who are perpetrating impunity should be held accountable.” [myad]

Senator Saraki Must Go, Group Protests At National Assembly

Saraki must go protestA group known as Open Society and Good Governance Initiative (OGGI) stormed the National Assembly premises today, demanding the resignation of the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki. The protesters bearing various placards with inscription “suspend Senator Bukola Saraki not Kabiru Marafa,” said that the embattled Marafa was exercising his freedom of speech and opinion, and such must not incur the wrath of the Senate.

President of the group, Mr. Emeka Ude said that there was need to strengthen democracy by allowing free speech as enshrined in the Constitution, even as he expressed disappointment over Dr. Bukola Saraki-led Senate’s attempt to shut down vibrant Senators instead of resigning his position as Senate President to face his trial at the CCT.

“We are here to protest because it was lawful for the likes of Senator Marafa to express his views and where that and that should be considered as undermining the integrity of the Senate.

“Several Senators have made unpalatable comments on issues in the past and none was suspended for such. Was it because this one bothers on Car purchase which was meant to service their ego rather than National development?,”

Meanwhile the Chairman, Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, Samuel Anyanwu had earlier submitted the report on Marafa during plenary.

This followed the motion moved by Deputy Leader of the Senate, Bala Ibn ‘N’allah and the motion was seconded by Senator David Umaru representing Niger East Senatorial District.

With the submission of Samuel Anyanwu’s report, the issue has now been set to be discussed by the Committee of the whole House at any other plenary against the expectation that the Committee might have recommended his expulsion which should be pronounced today. [myad]

Ex President Jonathan Used To Give Me Sealed Parcels To Deliver To People – His ADC

Colone Adegbe Jonathan ex ADCFormer Aide de Camp (ADC) to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Colonel Ojogbane Adegbe has told officers of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) that his boss, ex President Goodluck Jonathan used to hand him sealed parcels to be delivered to different people in the country, swearing that he carried out his duties in accordance with his oath of office.

Colonel Adegbe is currently being interrogated by the anti-graft agency in connection with an alleged N10 billion given to chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on the instructions of Jonathan.

A source, privy to the interrogation said that the former ADC explained to his interrogators that he had cause to receive and pass over sealed parcels and documents from the Commander-In-Chief to individuals.

The source said: “the ADC told EFCC operatives that part of his schedule of duty includes to collect and hand over documents and sealed parcels from his Commander-In-Chief to individuals.

“He also stated that he was not in the habit of opening such parcels to view their contents before an onward transmission to whomsoever such parcels were addressed to. He said doing otherwise would be a betrayal of the confidence reposed in him.

“He also told them that as a serving military officer, he was bound by his oath of commission into the Nigerian Armed Forces and would not divulge official secrets which he swore to keep.” [myad]

N400 Million Scam: You Can’t Prosecute Me Without Interrogating Ex President Jonathan – Metuh

Metuh and JonathanThe National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh, has told a Federal High Court that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) cannot prosecute him without interrogating former President Goodluck Jonathan regarding the source of the N400 million alleged to be part of arms purchase funds.
Metuh, who has filed a no case submission asking the court to discharge him from the seven- count money laundering charge preferred against him and his company, Destra Investment Limited, said the Prosecution Witness (PW5) evidence that presentation for which money was paid was made to Jonathan makes the investigation of his role as well as his evidence vital and indeed crucial without which no prima facie case can conceivably be said to have been made out. Chief Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN) led Metuh’s defence team.
“Dr. Jonathan, to whom the presentation was made for which the payment was made, is therefore a material and indispensible person in order for a prima facie case to be present. Where the prosecution failed to call such a vital witness, a strong presumption will arise that the evidence, if called, would be unfavourable to the prosecution.
Metuh argued that the EFCC has not established a prima facie case against him in line with Sections 302 and 357 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015 since the prosecution has not made such case against him and his company.
“In any case, the “mens area’ of the defendants to the effect that former NSA, Colonel Sambo Dasuki (ret.) committed a criminal offence cannot be inferred, but must be established by a competent evidence which must come from the prosecution.
It is the case of Metuh that no evidence was laid out by the prosecution that N400 million was the proceed of alleged criminal conduct committed by Dasuki, adding that if anything, all the documents presented by the prosecution in the case only point out that the former NSA complied with due process and the contrary has not been pronounced by the court of competent jurisdiction.
“In this case, by the evidence of PW3 who works in the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the NSA is answerable to the then President Goodluck Jonathan only,” he said.
Metuh said Section 15 (2) (d) of the ACJA requires the proof that the money must be proceed of an unlawful act.
“In this case, it has not been established that the defendants knew that the ONSA engaged in any unlawful acts, adding that an unlawful act must be an act which is not authorized or approved and which has been found to be illegal.
“There was no evidence that the defendants were involved in any forged documents to create a contract where none was in fact, in existence. “Pw8, the investigator was emphatic that he found no relationship of any kind between the defendants and Col. Sambo Dasuki.”
Meanwhile, Metuh took a fresh plea of not guilty in the amended charge against him and his earlier bail was restored by the court.
The fresh charge has nothing substantial as it did not alter the earlier one, but was just to correct some legal wordings contained in the previous charge sheet.
Justice Abang Okon, had granted Metuh leave to file his written no case submission after Ikpeazu moved an oral application that was not opposed by the prosecution counsel.
The judge ruled that the defence counsel is in control of his brief and at liberty to take any decision or action that was in the best interest of his client.
In granting the leave, Justice Okon directed counsel to file written addresses for and against the no case submission. While Metuh was directed to file his process yesterday, the prosecution counsel upon receipt of service, was directed to reply within three days to enable the defence counsel to reply on point of law within 24 hours.
Further hearing was adjourned to February 25 for adoption of written addresses.

Governor Aregbesola Opens Fire On PDP, Says It Is Full Of Lies

Aregbe 1The Government of Osun has described as a cock and bull tale, the allegation by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the Rauf Aregbesola administration is planning to replace doctors with native doctors.

The state government expressed pity for what it called the irredeemable abyss into which the PDP has sunk as demonstrated by the lack of substance and hollowness that characterize its criticisms of the Aregbesola administration.

In a statement by the Director of the Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Office of the Governor, Semiu Okanlawon, the government said that in an attempt to play the crucial role of opposition, PDP has exposed itself as a political party with made up of bad characters, suffering from ‘crass ignorance’ and ‘chronic intellectual deficiency.’

The statement said that the allegation that the government intended to sack some striking doctors and replace them with tradition healers (herbalists) could only be a figment of an inelegant and unrefined minds that could only be found within the rank of PDP.

He argued that PDP’s criticism must be misplaced when put side by side with the performance of the state in the health sector as second to Lagos in the provision of sound primary health care delivery in the whole country.

“The statistics are there for the PDP to fault. Osun under Aregbesola has the enviable record of sound health delivery. To come second to Lagos in Nigeria cannot be a little feat. Frankly, what is there to respond to in this PDP’s market place, naked dance?

“Weird is the logic of PDP and nothing can change the illogical reasoning of people, whose illogical ways brought Nigeria to her present predicament.

“Because of those who abandoned their jobs as a result of seemingly irreconcilable terms, the government has left no one in doubt on its efforts to deploy doctors from the state Ministry of Health, doctors in the Security agencies in the state to compliment the consultants and local governments’ doctors who are working.

“The idea of native doctors is in the imagination of those who are touting it and honestly such thoughts can only come from PDP and no other party on earth. It amounts to a waste of time not to ignore PDP.”

The statement said that in the area of education, the Aregbesola administration has performed creditably that it won accolade both home and abroad, adding that PDP lacks capacity to understand the innovations in the recreation and re-classification of schools in the state.

“As for its other allegations, the indices are there to confirm that Osun has witnessed good governance and PDP fails to point to any other thing other than the fact that there are challenges in the finances of the state. Is this peculiar to Osun or even Nigeria?

“Despite the fact that the world faces its most turbulent time ever, Nigeria’s economic woes would not have been this worrisome had the PDP managed the affairs of Nigeria the way Aregbesola has managed Osun’s resources when Nigeria had it good with petrol dollars.

“Crude sold for above $100 for many years and PDP frittered away the gains. It was desperate to hold on to Nigeria’s jugular embarking on a spending spree like demented souls. The sorry state of national economy today is the negative outcome of PDP’s  mismanagement of our affairs.

“Ironically, Aregbesola was the only one alerting Nigerians to the evil PDP was perpetrating. They have no moral standing to examine what Aregbesola is doing let alone condemn them.

“In education PDP knows the results under the Aregbesola years are incomparable to the pre-Aregbesola years. The massive infrastructure upgrade, better learning facilities have all changed the face of education in Osun.

“Despite the noticeable improvements, we do not even believe Osun people have seen the results yet. Wait for years to come when current beneficiaries of the Osun education turnarounds must be leading in their respective fields.” [myad]

He said that Lagos, under governor Ambode and his predecessors, had always been a major destination for sports and that the Confederation of African Football had just approved the hosting of the first ever Beach Soccer African Nations Cup in Lagos in December.
“The tournament is a major qualifier for the World Cup and eight best Beach soccer teams in Africa will converge in Lagos for the tournament and we know that Lagos has always played a pivotal role in redefining and rebranding Nigeria, which we are very excited about.” [myad]
