One of the disqualified contenders for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), governorship ticket in Bayelsa State, Senator Emmanuel Paulker, has said that the ruling party in the state sacrificed internal democracy just so that the incumbent, Dickson Seriake would get the party’s ticket for the December election.
The three-time Senator, who represents Bayelsa Central district in the National Assembly, said in Yenagoa at a forum with members of his campaign organization that internal democracy remains key to democracy in Nigeria.
He expressed displeasure at his disqualification by the PDP’s zonal screening committee in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, even as he lamented that since his disqualification, the party’s appeal panel was yet to come out with the result of their screening.
During the screening, Paulker and a former Chairman of Kolokuma-Opokuma Local Government Area, Chief Ebikitin Diongoli, were disqualified, leaving Governor Seriake Dickson as the sole candidate of the PDP.
This left the party’s delegates to only affirm the candidacy of Dickson last Thursday.
According to Paulker, for democracy to thrive in this country, there must be internal democracy, adding that without internal democracy, it is difficult for a party to reflect democracy on the playground.
“It is better to quarrel in the process of internal democracy than to shut out internal democracy out of our democratic experience.
“Regarding our disqualification, up till now, the appeal panel has yet to come out with the result of the screening. Power comes from God. Irrespective of parties, Bayelsa belongs to all of us. If a government is formed tomorrow, all of us will benefit from it. Any government in power owes all of us a duty of service.
“Like I told them at the screening panel, when they criticised me that members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, attended my ceremonies, I said the party required more Paulkers now than ever because we require ambassadors to go out of this party to canvass for votes in order for us to win.” [myad]

The Emir of Ilorin who spoke on behalf of his colleagues added: “it would be unwise to disguise under political altar to cow perceived political enemy.”
According to him, Nigerians should be wary of bad elements who are bent on dismantling the country on account of political vendetta. [myad]
Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has assured residents of Lagos that he will continue to improve on the foundation laid by his predecessor, former governor Babatunde Fashiola in the areas of infrastructural renewal.
The governor, who spoke at the 2015 Ojude Oba Epe Festival held at the Epe Recreation Ground, Epe, said the infrastructural renewal drive of the previous administration in the state would receive adequate attention in the course of his administration.
“One of the things that we did promise during the campaign is that we would continue with the infrastructural development of my predecessor and at the same time improve on it. That’s what we have started with in areas where we feel that there are immediate palliatives that we can give; we have done that but more importantly, is for us to improve on the network in which Mr. Babatunde Fashola had actually laid down,” he said.
Ambode said that he used the first three months of his administration to set up an institutional framework, assuring the people that the state would begin to witness development across the state.
“I have no choice; I have to do it for all Lagosians. That’s what I am committed to do. I have said I am going to be selfless about service and that’s what I am going to do and you will see it. What I have done in the last three months is to set up the institutional framework.
“If you want to build a house, you have to lay the foundation. You will now see what I will be doing in the next three and half years, just watch and you would see it,” he said.
The governor assured the people of Epe that development would get to the area, saying the town had witnessed less development in recent times. [myd]
The Presidency has warned those who have been spreading rumour that the Nigerian delegation to the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, led by President Muhammadu Buhari missed a meeting on help for displaced persons to stop the mischief. A statement by the senior special assistant to the President on media and publicity, Garba Shehi quoted Buhari as saying that anyone who created an impression that members of the Nigerian delegation were absent at an unofficial meeting, “is only being mischievous and uncharitable.” The statement said that President Buhari and his administration remain fully committed to the rehabilitation and well-being of all persons who have been displaced or adversely affected by the Boko Haram insurgency, adding that the war against terrorism, improved security across Nigeria and additional measures to give succour to internally displaced persons have been central to discussions which the President had with other world leaders since his arrival in New York on Thursday night. “The issues were dominant in the President’s conversations on Friday with Chancellor Angela Merkel, the King of Spain, His Majesty Don Felipe VI and former Prime-minister Gordon Brown who came with former President Olusegun Obasanjo to discuss the actualization of the safe schools initiative, which is of special interest in parts of Nigeria that is most vulnerable to terrorist attacks. “President Buhari is handling his duty as leader of the Nigerian delegation to this year’s General Assembly with the greatest possible diligence and will certainly not tolerate any tardiness on the part of the delegation in seizing every possible opportunity to advance Nigeria’s interests.” The statement drew attention to the fact that it was not possible for any national delegation, no matter its size, to participate in all the meetings that are simultaneously happening in and around the General Assembly in New York. It explained that the meeting in which Nigeria was reported to have been absent was not one the official events of the United Nations for which President Muhammadu Buhari and his modest delegation were in New York. “While the meeting referred to in media reports is commendable, it was not the only one or the most important of such meetings in New York that are paying attention to the problem of insecurity, migration and violent extremism in the Lake Chad area and the rest of the world. “Nigeria was represented earlier today at an important side event devoted to the North-East, called by the UN Population Fund, UNFPA on “Building Stability and Resilience in Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin Countries.” The statement stressed that President Buhari is fully conscious of his responsibility to Nigeria and that he would accept nothing short of the best for Nigerians in the meetings taking place in and around the United Nations. Alhaji Abbas was also the state’s Amirul Hajj for the 2015 pilgrimage. The chairman of the state pilgrims welfare board, Alhaji Hamman-Adama Tukur, confirmed the death of the Emir in Jamrat, saying that the remains of the emir had been recovered and buried in Mecca yesterday. President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed happiness over an announcement by the World Health Organization (WHO) that polio is no longer endemic in Nigeria. A statement from the presidential spokesman quoted Buhari as saying that the announcement came as a result of the absence of any case of the wild polio virus in Nigeria since July 24, 2014. “The President applauds the concerted efforts of government officials, health workers, volunteer groups, civil society, religious leaders, traditional rulers and international partners which resulted in this historic achievement.” President Buhari congratulated Nigerians and the global community for the achievement and called for celebrations as Nigeria has been removed from the list of polio-endemic countries. President Buhari however appealed to Nigerians to continue to be vigilance so as to ensure that the country maintains this new status. “The President directs all government ministries, departments and agencies involved in the polio eradication effort to remain proactively engaged and on guard against the re-emergence of the polio virus in Nigeria. “He assures the World Health Organisation and the global community that the Federal Government will ensure that immunisation and surveillance activities continue across Nigeria to keep the country polio-free.” [myad]
Her death struck like a thunderbolt in an empty hall. It was a resounding din that left many of those who knew and admired her way in sudden disbelief, shock and gnashing of teeth as if death never ever occurred before or would never ever occur. Yes, there were as many as 750 of such death in one fell swoop at Jamrat in Saudi Arabia on that fateful Eid-el-Kabir day: a day after the pilgrims have ‘climbed” mount Arafat, but, her own death symbolized some significant points which a very few people are endowed with. She etched her presence in the consciousness of the people of goodwill with her pen and with her actions that were bereft of needless noise or acrobatism of a Jezebel. She was a silent worker. Here was a woman who lived life, as Prophet Muhammad enjoined, as if she would die the next minute and simultaneously, as if she would never die in the next 100 years. She worked. Here was a woman, who clung to her religion, and therefore, her God and at the same time pursued things of the world without losing focus. She, it was who showed a clear consciousness of what the life itself signified: vanity upon vanity. That Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf died just as she was coming from Mount Arafat should be a thing of joy, and even envy for those who are conversant with the promise of Allah: that anybody who stays in Arafat for the whole day praying would be regarded as if he or she is just a new born baby – without sins. And therefore, let it not be a matter of wailing that her death and death of other more than 750 was a tragedy. Far from it! It was, if truth must be said, Holy Death. However, being human, we have to feel grieve because, to us, Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf had not fully fulfilled her potentials or would anybody, like her, have? And, in any case, what would anyone want Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf to achieve again that she had not achieved? This was a woman who was the first and only female gender that had served as the Editor of the then most powerful Northern newspaper, the New Nigerian Newspaper. The newspaper was one of the legacies of late Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello. And when the newspaper was waxing, even stronger men feared to sit on its editorial chair because of the political and social milieu that surrounded it. And Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf sat on that seat with grace, comfort and confidence. She left unscathed. This was a woman who was the only female that had served as editor of the Triumph newspaper; establish by late Imamun Change – the first civilian Governor of the old Kano state, Mohammadu Abubakar Rimi, for Kano State. Triumph editorship too was not meant for lily livered senior editorial staff, not for men with faltering steps or giddy sight or uncoordinated thoughts, knowing the stuff for which Rimi was made of. This was the woman who was the only female that had ever served as editor of a powerful privately owned Magazine, the Citizen, which was almost like the Northern version of the Newswatch then. Rubbing shoulders with such earth-shaking Journalists like Kabiru Yusuf, Adamu Adamu, Mohammad Bomoi and their likes in the Citizen, was no mean a gargantuan achievement for Bilkisu Yusuf. Here was a woman who got stronger, more creative, involved more in social and diplomatic services to women social network, the North, international communities and above all, to Islam as she aged.
Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf was listed amongst the 100 Prominent Muslim Women across the world by an international online platform “Muslim Women” and was said to be extremely well educated in Islam, and that she used to observe fasting every Monday and Thursday throughout her adult life. It was said that she absolutely would never shook hands with men as prescribed by Allah. She had strong ties to Islamic scholars in Sudan and used to travel there frequently. She was described as being friendly, and open in discussions.
She served on several national and international boards and wrote 20 chapters in published books on subjects ranging from Women’s rights, media, gender, Islam, politics and maternal and child health.
She was married with children.
As a matter of fact, when I left New Nigerian in 1987 after serving as its Kano State Correspondent for six years, I thought I had lost touch with Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf, but, being a prolific writer that she was, as she was always in demand, she had remained in the public domain, so much that she could be reached anywhere anytime. Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf, despite her exploits in journalism and several national and international None Governmental Organisations (NGOs), was a complete personification of humility, simplicity, honesty, God-fearing, devotion to all that she enjoyed doing and believed in, without conflicting with her femininity. She studied and got her B. S Degree in political science from the famous Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria and a Masters of Art Degree in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin. She also studied journalism at the Moscow Institute for Journalism and International Relations and earned an Advanced Diploma in journalism and international relations. She was a founding member of several NGOs, including Women In Nigeria (WIN), the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), and Advocacy Nigeria, where she was the executive director. She was a consultant and trainer in media, gender, and conflict management and peace building. She was on the board of FOMWAN, the Nigerian Interfaith Action Association Against Malaria (NIFAAM), Health Reform Foundation of Nigeria, (HERFON), ABANTU for Development, Vision Trust Foundation, and many others. Indeed, I had always felt some kind of attachment to Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf either because she bore my first name as her surname as if I was her father or husband. Though, most times we did not physically meet for months and or years, I had always been reading her lucid English in her column in the Weekly Trust and Leadership newspapers. She, like Mohammed Haruna and of course, my role model in Journalism, Mr. Dan Agbese and my good friend, Mahmud Jega, are four of a kind: writing to communicate.
To Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf is this dirge from Thomas Gray’s Elegy Written In A Country Church-Yard:
Full many a gem of purest ray serene The dark unfathom’d caves of ocean bear: Full many a flower is born to blush unseen, And waste its sweetness on the desert air. And then Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf’s candle went off, phew!
The Swiss attorney general has instituted criminal proceedings against FIFA President, Sepp Blatter over suspicions he violated his duties as head of football’s world governing body. Authorities said today that the outgoing FIFA chief was interrogated over suspected criminal mismanagement.
FIFA was said to have cancelled a news conference scheduled with Blatter today without explanation, just hours before the proceedings against him were announced.
Blatter was set to meet the international media at FIFA headquarters after a two-day executive committee meeting.
The Swiss federal office said Blatter was interrogated after chairing the meeting.
FIFA vice president Michel Platini was questioned as a witness over a “disloyal payment” of 2 million Swiss francs ($2.05m) he received from Blatter in February 2011, Swiss authorities said, according to the Associated Press news agency.
The FIFA chief was facing accusations he misappropriated funds and violated his duties as the head of world football’s governing body.
“There is a suspicion that…Joseph Blatter also violated his fiduciary duties” to FIFA in connection with a contract with the Caribbean Football Union, a statement from Switzerland’s attorney general’s office said.
Information Swiss authorities released tied the proceedings with the case against former FIFA vice-president Jack Warner, who is wanted by Interpol for corruption.
“The name Jack Warner, the former disgraced FIFA vice-President comes up…accused of signing a contract to do a deal that didn’t work for FIFA, or were in FIFA’s interests in 2005,” Wellings said. [myad]
President Muhammadu Buhari, addressing the UN General Assembly at the 70th UN general Assembly Submit on 25th Sept 2015
Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari has called upon all pharmaceutical companies for more cooperation and understanding in reducing the cost of anti – retro-viral drugs through production of generic items for HIV/Aide patients across the world. Buhari who spoke today at the 70th United Nations General Assembly in New York, the United States of America, encouraged the world body to continue in its efforts to sustain the fight against infant and maternal deaths, HIV and AIDs, Tuberculosis, Malaria and other communicable diseases, high on the global development agenda. The UN General Assembly, today, treated the subject on Strengthening The Means of Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and Ensuring an AIDS – Free Generation by 2030 Through the Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV: A Dual Imperative for Nigeria. President Buhari insisted that what is required in the continued fight against HIV/AIDS is improved health delivery system, education, and cheaper production of anti – retro-viral drugs through technology exchange. “Our countries should also look at the whole field of medicare and strengthen our partnership with all stakeholders including the civil society, inter- faith and cultural bodies for education and dissemination of information at all levels.” The Nigerian leader said that the world is on the threshold of history as world leaders adopt the successor development agenda to the Millennium Development Goals. According to him, for over 30 years, HIV as a public health challenge has been causing havoc and untold hardship in virtually every part of the world, adding that to date, several million children have been orphaned and some communities have been devastated, while economic activities have been disrupted. “Unfortunately, Sub -Saharan Africa bears a disproportionate burden of this epidemic. The good news is that the effort of the global community has resulted in greater control, less spread and better management. “Furthermore, we have made significant progress towards the interception of mother to child transmission of HIV. In 2014 alone, over 3 million pregnant women were tested for HIV and 63,000 of these tested women, accessed anti – retro-viral therapy.” President Buhari promised that Nigeria will continue to work with development partners and key stakeholders to strengthen the means of implementation of the SDGs as elaborated in the Post- 2015 Development Agenda. He said that at the continental level, Nigeria would remain fully committed to the outcome of the Abuja process as evident in the 2002 Declaration, the Action Framework on Roll – Back Malaria. “In addition, the 2013 Abuja + 12 Declaration is a strong commitment towards eliminating HIV and AIDs in Africa by 2030. Globally, the United Nations Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS of 2011 is a major reference point for intensifying efforts to eliminate the epidemic. “Nigeria appreciates the support of our development partners for their support and commitment to the total eradication of HIV/AIDs, Tuberculosis and Malaria as well as other deadly communicable diseases, for example Ebola, when an epidemic arises.” The President asked the stakeholders to work together to make HIV and AIDs history by 2030. The Nigerian Army has raised alarm over plans by those it called “some highly-placed individuals” in the North East, particularly Borno State, to sabotage military operations against Boko Haram insurgents in the region.
A statement by the army spokesman, Colonel Sani Usman today, said that the elites are bent on having the activities of the Boko Haram terrorists prolonged for their selfish interests.
Colonel Usman said: “the Nigerian Army wishes to inform the public and send a very strong and serious final warning to some prominent individuals and political groups who hailed from Borno State in particular and North East generally, that there is information of plans by some highly placed individuals and political groups to undermine and scuttle the fight against terrorism and insurgency in this country.
“The unscrupulous individuals and their cohorts were determined to reverse the gains made and scuttle our efforts of achieving the Presidential directive to defeat Boko Haram terrorists within 3 months. They are enlisting the services of some Non-Governmental Organizations in this grand design.
“It has come to our knowledge that they were employing every means to see that the operation does not succeed in order for them to continue to enjoy certain benefits.
“It has been revealed that they are employing the services of marabouts and other unethical means in order to frustrate our efforts and the operations in addition to campaign of calumny.
“We are aware of their clandestine meetings and other diabolical efforts to achieve their nefarious aims. This would not be tolerated.
“Therefore, such individuals and groups should be warned in unmistakable terms that anyone found would be dealt with accordingly.
“People should place the interest of the nation above any personal gain or ambition. The continued lost of lives and property in this country through terrorists activities does not one any good.” [myad]
