Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf Strutted Here, And Left…By Yusuf Ozi-Usman

Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf 2
Her death struck like a thunderbolt in an empty hall. It was a resounding din that left many of those who knew and admired her way in sudden disbelief, shock and gnashing of teeth as if death never ever occurred before or would never ever occur.
Yes, there were as many as 750 of such death in one fell swoop at Jamrat in Saudi Arabia on that fateful Eid-el-Kabir day: a day after the pilgrims have ‘climbed” mount Arafat, but, her own death symbolized some significant points which a very few people are endowed with. She etched her presence in the consciousness of the people of goodwill with her pen and with her actions that were bereft of needless noise or acrobatism of a Jezebel. She was a silent worker.
Here was a woman who lived life, as Prophet Muhammad enjoined, as if she would die the next minute and simultaneously, as if she would never die in the next 100 years. She worked.
Here was a woman, who clung to her religion, and therefore, her God and at the same time pursued things of the world without losing focus. She, it was who showed a clear consciousness of what the life itself signified: vanity upon vanity.
That Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf died just as she was coming from Mount Arafat should be a thing of joy, and even envy for those who are conversant with the promise of Allah: that anybody who stays in Arafat for the whole day praying would be regarded as if he or she is just a new born baby – without sins. And therefore, let it not be a matter of wailing that her death and death of other more than 750 was a tragedy. Far from it!
It was, if truth must be said, Holy Death.
However, being human, we have to feel grieve because, to us, Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf had not fully fulfilled her potentials or would anybody, like her, have?
And, in any case, what would anyone want Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf to achieve again that she had not achieved?
This was a woman who was the first and only female gender that had served as the Editor of the then most powerful Northern newspaper, the New Nigerian Newspaper. The newspaper was one of the legacies of late Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello. And when the newspaper was waxing, even stronger men feared to sit on its editorial chair because of the political and social milieu that surrounded it. And Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf sat on that seat with grace, comfort and confidence. She left unscathed.
This was a woman who was the only female that had served as editor of the Triumph newspaper; establish by late Imamun Change – the first civilian Governor of the old Kano state, Mohammadu Abubakar Rimi, for Kano State. Triumph editorship too was not meant for lily livered senior editorial staff, not for men with faltering steps or giddy sight or uncoordinated thoughts, knowing the stuff for which Rimi was made of.
This was the woman who was the only female that had ever served as editor of a powerful privately owned Magazine, the Citizen, which was almost like the Northern version of the Newswatch then. Rubbing shoulders with such earth-shaking Journalists like Kabiru Yusuf, Adamu Adamu, Mohammad Bomoi and their likes in the Citizen, was no mean a gargantuan achievement for Bilkisu Yusuf.
Here was a woman who got stronger, more creative, involved more in social and diplomatic services to women social network, the North, international communities and above all, to Islam as she aged.

Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf was listed amongst the 100 Prominent Muslim Women across the world by an international online platform “Muslim Women” and was said to be extremely well educated in Islam, and that she used to observe fasting every Monday and Thursday throughout her adult life. It was said that she absolutely would never shook hands with men as prescribed by Allah. She had strong ties to Islamic scholars in Sudan and used to travel there frequently. She was described as being friendly, and open in discussions.

She served on several national and international boards and wrote 20 chapters in published books on subjects ranging from Women’s rights, media, gender, Islam, politics and maternal and child health.

She was married with children.

As a matter of fact, when I left New Nigerian in 1987 after serving as its Kano State Correspondent for six years, I thought I had lost touch with Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf, but, being a prolific writer that she was, as she was always in demand, she had remained in the public domain, so much that she could be reached anywhere anytime.
Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf, despite her exploits in journalism and several national and international None Governmental Organisations (NGOs), was a complete personification of humility, simplicity, honesty, God-fearing, devotion to all that she enjoyed doing and believed in, without conflicting with her femininity.
She studied and got her B. S Degree in political science from the famous Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria and a Masters of Art Degree in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin. She also studied journalism at the Moscow Institute for Journalism and International Relations and earned an Advanced Diploma in journalism and international relations.
She was a founding member of several NGOs, including Women In Nigeria (WIN), the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), and Advocacy Nigeria, where she was the executive director. She was a consultant and trainer in media, gender, and conflict management and peace building. She was on the board of FOMWAN, the Nigerian Interfaith Action Association Against Malaria (NIFAAM), Health Reform Foundation of Nigeria, (HERFON), ABANTU for Development, Vision Trust Foundation, and many others.
Indeed, I had always felt some kind of attachment to Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf either because she bore my first name as her surname as if I was her father or husband. Though, most times we did not physically meet for months and or years, I had always been reading her lucid English in her column in the Weekly Trust and Leadership newspapers. She, like Mohammed Haruna and of course, my role model in Journalism, Mr. Dan Agbese and my good friend, Mahmud Jega, are four of a kind: writing to communicate.

To Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf is this dirge from Thomas Gray’s Elegy Written In A Country Church-Yard:

Full many a gem of purest ray serene
The dark unfathom’d caves of ocean bear:
Full many a flower is born to blush unseen,
And waste its sweetness on the desert air.
And then Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf’s candle went off, phew!

She died!

So what?

Switzerland Charges Blatter, FIFA Boss, With Criminal Case

Sepp Blatter

The Swiss attorney general has instituted criminal proceedings against FIFA President, Sepp Blatter over suspicions he violated his duties as head of football’s world governing body. Authorities said today that the outgoing FIFA chief was interrogated over suspected criminal mismanagement.

FIFA was said to have cancelled a news conference scheduled with Blatter today without explanation, just hours before the proceedings against him were announced.

Blatter was set to meet the international media at FIFA headquarters after a two-day executive committee meeting.

The Swiss federal office said Blatter was interrogated after chairing the meeting.

FIFA vice president Michel Platini was questioned as a witness over a “disloyal payment” of 2 million Swiss francs ($2.05m) he received from Blatter in February 2011, Swiss authorities said, according to the Associated Press news agency.

The FIFA chief was facing accusations he misappropriated funds and violated his duties as the head of world football’s governing body.

“There is a suspicion that…Joseph Blatter also violated his fiduciary duties” to FIFA in connection with a contract with the Caribbean Football Union, a statement from Switzerland’s attorney general’s office said.

Information Swiss authorities released tied the proceedings with the case against former FIFA vice-president Jack Warner, who is wanted by Interpol for corruption.

“The name Jack Warner, the former disgraced FIFA vice-President comes up…accused of signing a contract to do a deal that didn’t work for FIFA, or were in FIFA’s interests in 2005,” Wellings said. [myad]

Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari has called upon all pharmaceutical companies for more cooperation and understanding in reducing the cost of anti – retro-viral drugs through production of generic items for HIV/Aide patients across the world.
Buhari who spoke today at the 70th United Nations General Assembly in New York, the United States of America, encouraged the world body to continue in its efforts to sustain the fight against infant and maternal deaths, HIV and AIDs, Tuberculosis, Malaria and other communicable diseases, high on the global development agenda.
The UN General Assembly, today, treated the subject on Strengthening The Means of Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and
Ensuring an AIDS – Free Generation by 2030 Through the Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV: A Dual Imperative for Nigeria.
President Buhari insisted that what is required in the continued fight against HIV/AIDS is improved health delivery system, education, and cheaper production of anti – retro-viral drugs through technology exchange.
“Our countries should also look at the whole field of medicare and strengthen our partnership with all stakeholders including the civil society, inter- faith and cultural bodies for education and dissemination of information at all levels.”
The Nigerian leader said that the world is on the threshold of history as world leaders adopt the successor development agenda to the Millennium Development Goals.
According to him, for over 30 years, HIV as a public health challenge has been causing havoc and untold hardship in virtually every part of the world, adding that to date, several million children have been orphaned and some communities have been devastated, while economic activities have been disrupted.
“Unfortunately, Sub -Saharan Africa bears a disproportionate burden of this epidemic. The good news is that the effort of the global community has resulted in greater control, less spread and better management.
“Furthermore, we have made significant progress towards the interception of mother to child transmission of HIV. In 2014 alone, over 3 million pregnant women were tested for HIV and 63,000 of these tested women, accessed anti – retro-viral therapy.”
President Buhari promised that Nigeria will continue to work with development partners and key stakeholders to strengthen the means of implementation of the SDGs as elaborated in the Post- 2015 Development Agenda.
He said that at the continental level, Nigeria would remain fully committed to the outcome of the Abuja process as evident in the 2002 Declaration, the Action Framework on Roll – Back Malaria.
“In addition, the 2013 Abuja + 12 Declaration is a strong commitment towards eliminating HIV and AIDs in Africa by 2030. Globally, the United Nations Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS of 2011 is a major reference point for intensifying efforts to eliminate the epidemic.
“Nigeria appreciates the support of our development partners for their support and commitment to the total eradication of HIV/AIDs, Tuberculosis and Malaria as well as other deadly communicable diseases, for example Ebola, when an epidemic arises.”
The President asked the stakeholders to work together to make HIV and AIDs history by 2030. [myad]

Nigeria Army Cries Like ‘Baby,’ Says Some Borno Leaders Are Plotting To Sabotage Efforts At Defeating Boko Haram

Colonel Sani Usman

The Nigerian Army has raised alarm over plans by those it called “some highly-placed individuals” in the North East, particularly Borno State, to sabotage military operations against Boko Haram insurgents in the region.

A statement by the army spokesman, Colonel Sani Usman today, said that the elites are bent on having the activities of the Boko Haram terrorists prolonged for their selfish interests.

Colonel Usman said: “the Nigerian Army wishes to inform the public and send a very strong and serious final warning to some prominent individuals and political groups who hailed from Borno State in particular and North East generally, that there is information of plans by some highly placed individuals and political groups to undermine and scuttle the fight against terrorism and insurgency in this country.

“The unscrupulous individuals and their cohorts were determined to reverse the gains made and scuttle our efforts of achieving the Presidential directive to defeat Boko Haram terrorists within 3 months. They are enlisting the services of some Non-Governmental Organizations in this grand design.

“It has come to our knowledge that they were employing every means to see that the operation does not succeed in order for them to continue to enjoy certain benefits.

“It has been revealed that they are employing the services of marabouts and other unethical means in order to frustrate our efforts and the operations in addition to campaign of calumny.

“We are aware of their clandestine meetings and other diabolical efforts to achieve their nefarious aims. This would not be tolerated.

“Therefore, such individuals and groups should be warned in unmistakable terms that anyone found would be dealt with accordingly.

“People should place the interest of the nation above any personal gain or ambition. The continued lost of lives and property in this country through terrorists activities does not one any good.” [myad]

2 Universities Withdraw Bill Cosby’s Honorary Degrees Over Sex Scandal

Bill Cosby

In the latest setback over his sex assault allegations, two universities have rescinded honorary degrees awarded to Bill Cosby years ago. They are Fordham University in New York and Marquette University in Wisconsin which announced yesterday thatthey had pulled the degrees given to the comedian to honour him.

In a statement, Fordham said as a Jesuit university, it could “no longer stand behind the degree” it gave to Cosby in 2001. The school said Cosby was unworthy of the honour not just because of the actions he admitted to in a deposition — that he obtained drugs to give to women he wanted to have sex with — but also because Fordham believed he engaged in a “longtime strategy” of verbally attacking his female accusers.

“That Mr. Cosby was willing to drug and rape women for his sexual gratification, and further damage those same women’s reputations and careers to obscure his guilt, hurt not only his victims, but all women, and is beyond the pale,” the statement read.

Over the years, dozens of women have accused Cosby of sex assault, but he has denied the accusations and has never been charged.

This is the first time that Fordham has rescinded an honorary degree.

In an equally strong statement, the president and provost of Marquette announced the school’s board of trustees rescinded Cosby’s degree, awarded in 2013, after conversations with campus leaders and faculty members. University President Michael R. Lovell and Provost Daniel Myers said both groups gave overwhelming support to the board’s action.

Like Fordham, Marquette cited what Cosby has admitted to in a deposition as the basis for its action.

“By his own admission, Mr. Cosby engaged in behaviors that go entirely against our university’s mission and the guiding values we have worked so hard to instill on our campus,” the statement read.

The fallout from the controversy over the sex assault allegations has been swift. Reruns of “The Cosby Show,” his landmark 1980s sitcom, have been pulled from the airwaves, and other projects and tour dates have been scrapped. [myad]

How Kidnappers Made Falae To Trek 30 Kilometres, Sleep On Bare Floor – Family Member

Olu Falae

A member of Falae’s family has narrated how kidnappers made the Nigeria’s former Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), Chief Olu Falae, to trek about 30 kilometres from Ilado where they kidnapped him to Owo where he was eventually freed.

The family member who said that Chief Falae was kidnapped by six Fulani herdsmen said that the Chief was made to sleep in the bush for three days as the kidnappers changed their locations every four hours.

Saying that he was not sure if ransom was paid before he was let off the hook, the family member said: “Baba has just narrated his ordeal to some of us. His abductors made him to trek from his farm to Owo. Baba also said he was sleeping on the ‎ground since his kidnap.

“We can’t say if any ransom was paid for his release. According to Baba, when he told the kidnappers that his family only had N2 million, they asked him if he thought the amount was enough for‎ Boko Haram.”

Meanwhile, Falae told Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who paid him a visit at his residence in Obaile that he believed the herdsmen were working for Boko Haram.

The Afenifere chieftain said he was made to sleep on the bare floor throughout his stay with his captors.

The nation’s Inspector General of Police, Arase had earlier told journalists that no ransom was paid before Falae secured his freedom. [myad]

32 Million Accounts In Nigeria Yet To Register For Verification Number – CBN

BVN Bank registration centre

The Central Bank of Nigeria has said that as at the end of September, 32 million active bank accounts are yet to register for the Biometric Verification Number (BVN).

In a statement in Abuja today, CBN’s Director of Corporate Communications, Mu’azu Ibrahim, said CBN is concerned by the number of account owners yet to enroll, considering that the exercise would end by October 31.

According to the statement, after 18 month of the exercise, empirical evidence shows that a good number of bank customers are reluctant and have not taken the exercise seriously.

“The emerging statistical trend of the BVN registration exercise shows that there are about 52 million active bank accounts in various banks.

“Out of this, total enrollment stands at about 20 million, out of which about 14 million accounts have been found linked to the BVN as of September, 2015.

“The question now is whether bank customers have been taking advantage of the extension to complete their BVN registration and also ensure that their various bank accounts have been linked to the BVN.”

The statement revealed that after the initial rush from June ending to July, there had been a steady decline in new BVN enrollment figures for August and September.

The CBN, in collaboration with all banks in Nigeria, had on February 14 last year, inaugurated the BVN, which is a centralized biometric identification system for the banking industry.

It aims at addressing issues of identity theft and fraud and will help to discover blacklisted customers, reduce queues in banking halls and standardize efficiency of banking operations.

The CBN also said the BVN would encourage banks to grant loans to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and students in the country.

“One of the most potent arguments advanced by banks for not extending enough credit to prospective credit customers in Nigeria has been the absence of credible identity system.

“Thus, it was agreed that the scheme would make access to credit easier for low income earners in the society,’’ the Apex bank said.

The CBN had initially put the deadline of BVN registration at June 30 but postponed it to October 31 because of low enrollment. [myad]

Pope Francis Grieves For Muslim World Over Deaths At Jamrat, Saudi Arabia

Pope prays

Pope Francis has expressed his pain as Muslims around the world bemoan the death of hundreds of pilgrims who died in a stampede at Jamrat near Mecca yesterday.

The incident has been described as the worst disaster to hit the annual hajj pilgrimage in 25 years.

Speaking during a packed evening prayer service at New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Argentine pope expressed his “sentiments of closeness in the face of the tragedy that their people suffered today in Mecca.”

“In this moment of prayer, I unite myself with you all in prayer to God, our father, all powerful and merciful,” the spiritual leader of 1.2 billion Catholics added.

As at the last count, no fewer than 717 pilgrims lost their lives with 805 injured. [myad]

Buhari Describes Multiple Deaths At Jamrat As Global Islamic Monumental Tragedy, Mourns Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf

Deaths in Jamrat

President Muhammadu Buhari has described multiple deaths at Jamrat in Saudi Arabia yesterday as a monumental tragedy, not only for citizens of the countries involved, but for the global Islamic community even as he mourned the death, in the tragedy of a veteran female journalist, Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf.

The President said he was deeply saddened by the colossal calamity that claimed the lives of hundreds of pilgrims, including some Nigerians.

A statement by senior special adviser to the President on media and publicity, Garba Shehu quoted Buhari from New York the United States of America as saying that the stampede at Mina in which Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf, Professor Tijjani El-Miskin and others lost their lives is monumental tragedy, not only for citizens of the countries involved, but for the global Islamic community.

The President extends sincerest condolences to the families of the over 700 pilgrims who lost their lives in this latest disaster in the Holy Places which occurred less than two weeks after a crane collapse in Mecca claimed more than a hundred lives.

Buhari commiserated with the Nigerian Guild of Editors(NGE) and the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) on the sad loss of Hajiya Bilkisu, whom he described as “an exemplary, dedicated, knowledgeable, very credible, highly-respected,  outstanding editor and columnist who, even in death, will remain a glittering role model for journalists, within and outside Nigeria.”

The President took note of the assurance by the Government of Saudi Arabia that Thursday’s catastrophe will be investigated even as he advised King Salman to ensure  a comprehensive and thorough exercise that will identify any flaws in Hajj organization with a view to avoiding a recurrence of such tragedies during the annual pilgrimage.

“In the knowledge that it is not within our powers to question the will of God, President Buhari  prays that Almighty Allah will comfort the families who lost their beloved ones in the stampede and receive the souls of all those who died in the Holy Land while fulfilling the religious obligation of the Hajj.” [myad]

UNICEF Celebrates Adoption Of Sustainable Development Goals By UN General Assembly

UNICEF kid

The United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF) is celebrating today’s adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals by the United Nations General Assembly, at a Summit in New York in which over 130 heads of state and government were in attendance.

The historic adoption of the proposal came shortly after an address by Pope Francis, who remarked: “we live in a world in which many who are born poor will die poor. It is up to us to be the first society to eradicate poverty and bring justice and equality to the most disenfranchised people on earth.”

The Sustainable Development Goals represent an ambitious plan of action that aims to eliminate extreme poverty and hunger, provide quality lifelong education for all, protect the planet and promote peaceful and inclusive societies.

These new global goals offer a historic opportunity to provide children with the fair start in life they deserve, UNICEF said, cautioning that this opportunity will be wasted if the world does not focus efforts and investments on the most disadvantaged and vulnerable children.

Angélique Kidjo, who has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2002, sang a moving version of ‘Afirika’ – her hymn to the continent she calls home.

“Africa and its children have the most to gain from the Sustainable Development Goals, but they also have the most to lose if our leaders do not fully commit to this new agenda for peace and prosperity,” Kidjo said. “As an artist I want to use my voice to make sure that people around the world understand the new global goals and why they matter, so that they can hold their leaders accountable for their success or failure.”

Flanked by a group of young people from across the world, Malala Yousafzai then delivered a message of hope for today’s children before the SDGs were ratified by world leaders.

Also Shakira, a passionate advocate of children’s rights, told the assembled world leaders before her performance: “Our children have the right to equal opportunities; to thrive, to be happy, healthy, and safe.” [myad]
