Taliban Kills 4 Police, Set 350 Prison Inmates Free In A Raid On Afghan Prison

Taliban attacks prison

A Taliban suicide squad struck today in the eastern Afghanistan, killing four police officers, wounding another seven police officers and setting 350 inmates free. This came a day after the Afghan army killed dozens of Taliban fighters in military operations.

Deputy Governor of Ghazni province, Mohammad Ali Ahmadi, said that the Taliban fighters detonated an explosives-laden vehicle in front of the prisons in the city of Ghazni, and fired rocket-propelled grenades. Then six militants dressed in Afghan police uniforms raided the jail.

He said that the police returned fire, killing at least three insurgents even as the Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack, adding that ten suicide fighters carried it out during which time three of them died.

In a statement, the Taliban said that the majority of the freed prisoners were either Taliban commanders and fighters or Taliban members’ relatives.

The Afghan Interior Ministry said more than a third of the escapees had been charged with national and international security crimes. Two-thirds had been charged with criminal offenses.

In 2011, Taliban fighters carried out an even larger prison raid freeing more than 500 inmates from a prison in Kandahar province.

Today’s prison break closely followed operations by the Afghan National Army, which said its forces killed 100 militants over the weekend.

The operations, which occurred in 11 of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces, were conducted in a 24-hour period from Saturday afternoon into Sunday, according to the Afghan Ministry of Defense.

A dozen ANA soldiers died in the fighting, according to a ministry statement.

In addition to the 100 insurgents killed, another 35 were wounded and one was taken into custody, the statement said.

The ANA also said its forces seized caches of weapons and defused 30 mines. [myad]

Wike Accuses Army Of Playing APC’s Script, Says Military Men Lied On Oath

wike

The Rivers state Governor, Nyeson Wike has accused the Military personnel that discredited the elections in the state of playing the script of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Rivers Governorship election petition tribunal sitting in Abuja.

In a statement today by Special Adviser to Wike on Media, Opunabo Inko-Tariah, the governor also said that the Military men “merely lied on oath”

Dismissing the testimonies of some witnesses that have appeared before the Tribunal, including a Senior official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Charles Okoye who also claimed the elections were marred by violence and intimidation, the governor said all the testimonies so far were in contradiction to the facts before the Justice Ambrosa-led Tribunal.

The statement reads: “The news making the rounds that an INEC staff at the ongoing Governorship Election Tribunal for Rivers state, gave testimonies confirming alleged irregularities, violence and ballot box snatching is entirely meaningless and of no consequence to the substance of the matters at the Tribunal.

“Although this should not ordinarily be an issue for media debate, being a matter before a Tribunal, it is important to straighten the records for public information to the effect all that all the bogus claims by the busybody INEC staff represented were not only entirely scripted but dead on arrival.

“This is because INEC itself which is his employer and a key defendant in the matter at the Tribunal had conducted an independent investigation into the alleged malpractices and purported violence in Rivers state through three national Commissioners assigned for that purpose and they respectively reported that elections in the state were free, fair and credible and that it was indeed the APC that fermented trouble during the elections in Rivers state.

“It is important to note however that it was the then INEC Chairman Prof. Atahiru Jega who read out this report on national Television and abroad in various fora, thus revalidating the election of Nyesom Wike as Governor of Rivers state.

“It should also be recalled that the Tribunal under the current Chairman, Justice Ambrose, in his recent ruling, struck out paragraphs touching on electoral violence and parties mentioned in the petition who are not before the Tribunal, thus rendering the petition against Governor Wike almost useless and very weak.

“Counsel to Governor Wike Adedipe SAN had confirmed that the testimony by the said witness contradicts that of INEC since he claimed he monitored elections in several parts of the state, although he gave testimony not in his capacity as an INEC staff, thus raising questions around his locus to testify if not speaking the mind of INEC which he claims he works for.”

“However, it will be more responsible for the Tribunal to be allowed to give its judgement on the matters before it, even though the APC has now suddenly realized that it has no case and continuous rumour mongering will not be in their interest.

On the Soldier’s, Wike said, “Truth is one thing that remains incontrovertible. Malice, hatred or ignorance may deride or distort it but it still remains .

“The testimony at the Rivers state Governorship Election Tribunal by an Army Captain to the effect that there was no election in Rivers state is a testimony of falsehood completely devoid of merit.

“It follows that the army was never involved in the election process and so can not be taken seriously.

“It is therefore pertinent to ask the following questions:

“Was the Army an election monitoring agent?

“Did the army do any report in the purported electoral Violence in Rivers state or was all of these an afterthought just to score cheap points?

“Who were those that instigated the so-called violence and what has become of them if any?

“The crucial point to note here is that suborn witnessing does not translate into victory for APC. I glean from the captain’s testimony a veiled compromising bias. [myad]

National Youth Service Corps Faults Police Over Arrest Of 3 Corps Members In Niger For Robbery

NYSC DG Olawumi

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has described the arrest of three corps members by men of the Nigeria Police, on allegation of robbing a shop owner in Suleja, Niger State, as case of mistaken identity.

In respect of this, it said two of the accused corps members have been released while it is working on securing the release of the third corps member.

The NYSC Director of Public Relations, Mrs. Bose Aderibigbe, while making clarifications on the case, stated that their release was secured as a result of interventions from the Niger State government through the office of the Secretary to the Government and the Ministry of Youth Development.

In a statement by the NYSC, Aderibigbe stated: “Without prejudice to the investigative duties of the appropriate law enforcement agency, we have it on good authority that preliminary findings had shown that the accusation against the trio was based only on circumstantial evidence.”

The NYSC, however, assured the public, particularly parents and guardians of corps members that no single corps member will be allowed to suffer unduly, especially over cases of mistaken identity during the service year.

She stated that the provisions of the NYSC Bye-Laws are very clear on the involvement of corps members in criminal acts, though very unlikely, as their participation in the scheme does not confer immunity from prosecution.

“We have, therefore, continued to sensitise members of the service corps on the need to be law-abiding and to shun acts capable of soiling the image of the scheme and their families,” the statement read.

The scheme further urged corps members serving in Suleja to go about their duties without fear of molestation, saying, “we have already intensified liaison with the Army, Police and other security agencies in the area as well as the Suleja Emirate Council who have all renewed their commitment to the protection of all corps members in the area.” [myad]

World Bank Worries That Nigeria Has Lost $100 Billion To Power Outages

Darkness

World Bank has expressed worry that Nigeria has lost a whopping sum of about $100 billion in just one year as a result of blackout. It added that daily power outage has cost the country many investors who have become very reluctant in investing in Nigeria’s economy.

The latest World Bank’s ‘’Doing Business’’ report has placed Nigeria in 189th position among thriving economic countries of the world.

Although Nigeria is Africa’s largest oil producing country, it is still bedeviled by power generation bottlenecks as generated outputs hover around 5,000 megawatts which is about just a one-third of national demands.

Previous administrations had tried to rescue the power sector. Part of the solutions was the allocation of huge budgets and later, unbundling of the sector to achieve efficiency but all had just a little effect on salvaging the sector.

President Muhammadu Buhari has decried the low state of power generation in the country and has therefore, spurred a vehement revitalization of the sector to meet both national and international demands.

However, the sector is yet to totally deal with challenges of gas shortages, pipeline vandalism, inadequate funding, corruption and unprofitable pricing which makes fixing of power cuts a difficult feat to attain. [myad]

Nigeria Volley Ball Team Thrashes South Africa To Lift Gold

Volley ball team

Nigeria’s women beach volleyball team, today in Brazzaville, beat South Africa 2-1 to claim the event’s gold medal at the 11th All-Africa Games in Congo.

Reports have it that the pair of Priscilla Agera and Isabella Laju, rallied from a set down to win 2-1 and erase the bad memories of 2011.

The Nigerian side had in 2011 at the 10th AAG in Maputo, Mozambique lost in the semi-finals to Kenya and in the third-place match to Ghana. But this time around, after whipping Kenya in the semi-finals, it was all set for them to redeem Nigeria’s image in the sport as a whole on the continent. They, however, had to battle hard, losing 21-11 in the first set, before battling back to draw level with a 21-13 wins in the second set.

The third set was nerve-wracking, with both teams running neck-to-neck, before South Africa fell behind 7-11. They quickly drew level to move to 13-11, before the power-playing Agera pushed harder for two more points to draw level as a handful of Nigerians roared them on. There was then no stopping the duo as they held on for a 15-13 victory to give Nigeria the gold medal.

“It was great winning the gold medal, after all the effort. But it was not easy, especially after we have to come from behind. “But courage helped us. We were courageous, as we knew we needed to win, not only for ourselves but for all Nigerians,’’ she said.

The Nigerian supporters at the final match included Habu Gumel, President of Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), and Bolaji Ojo-Oba, a former Director, National Sports Commission. [myad]
