“As a political machine, Senator Akume has remained one of the foremost political survivalists, overcoming a series of political battles since 1999. He is indeed, one of the few governors of the 1999 set that is still relevant in the nation’s political space. His vast political network within the region and across the country is a major political asset.”
These were the observations made by the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, in a congratulatory message to Akume, who is currently the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). He is celebrating his 70th birthday today, December 27.
The Senate President, also described Akume as a nationalist and peaceful leader whose belief in the unity of the country is never in doubt, adding that in all his public life, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainable development.
Senator Akpabio, in the message signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, said that Akume, who is the former Benue state governor is a political machine of note.

“As a political strategist, Senator Akume revived progressive politics in the North Central when he worked closely with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to introduce the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) to the region, which later transformed into our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). To his credit, the North Central has reclaimed its position as the home of progressives.

Do These, Banditry, Terrorism Will Be Gone In Nigeria, By Rashidat Yusuf

For how long shall we continue to neglect the Northern youths of Nigeria?
The sorry site of “alimajiri” squatting under the bridge in Kawo, in Kaduna State is not new to regular visitors to Kaduna.
Similar site is replicated under the bridge as you enter the ancient town of Zaria in the same Kaduna State. Students of Ahmadu Bello University would testify to this fact.
The same applies to Zuba in Niger State. Zuba is a border town between Niger State and the Federal capital Territory, Abuja.
Zuba does not present a feature of a town similar to the Federal Capital Territory. This is a story for another day.
The shocking revelation to some of us who hardly go far North is the level at which the almajiris (Qur’anic learning pupils or scholars) have grown up and yet the younger ones are left to wander on their own aimlessly.
Unlike those in Abuja, of the same age group, who engage in petty trading and menial jobs, others in remote villages in the North are mostly idle, just as some also engage in selling sugar canes and the likes.
In real sense however, they can be classified as idle because they are not engaged to their full capacity.
This brings us to the issue of banditry and kidnapping, for, it is said that an idle mind is the devil’s workshop.
A drive from Funtua, an ancient town a few kilometres from Zaria, would bring out the true picture which this write up is trying to paint.
Funtua is actually the gateway to Zamfara State, from the Northwest axis.
Many youths in Funtua wander about aimlessly.
Little wonder then that there is so much kidnapping and banditry in that part of the North.
Those idle youths are visible also in Mairuwa, Sheme, Magazu, Tsafe and Kotarkoshi. All these towns lead to Gusau, the Zamfara State capital .
A drive through these towns shows that the Minister of Youth development has a lot of work to do.
These youths must be fully engaged if the issue of banditry and terrorism must be put behind us.
They must be taken care of and engaged meaningfully, through skills acquisition.
It is obvious that these youths are willing to become something in life but the capacity is just not there for them.
In order to reach these youths, the Federal Ministry of Youth Development MUST establish satellite offices in all states of the federation.
Sincere leadership should be ensured in such offices to deliver to the yearning of the teaming youths.
Since most of these youths do not have any form of formal education, the best way is to engage them in artisanship, apprenticeship and craftsmanship in such a way as to become self reliant.
Only then and then will the idle youths be kept off the streets and sanity is returned to the security sector.
This action will have positive impact on the farming system as farmers will now be free to go back to farms. There would be no more fear of kidnappers and bandits.
Those who say the North is feeding the nation are not wrong after all. This is in spite of the ugly incidence of banditry.
It is interesting to note that trailer loads of food items such as grains and vegetables are often seen heading towards the South every day.
Imagine if there are no incidences of kidnapping and banditry, Nigeria would have truly be self sufficient in food production.
Fingers, they say, are not equal, so also are the states of the Federation.
While Kano State is able to send her youths abroad yearly to acquire professional skills, many other States do not have the financial capability to measure up.
A Northern, Hamza Mohammed will however not applaud such gestures from kano state .
He considers it a waste, as such resources taken abroad for overseas training can be utilised to upgrade the tertiary institutions in the country .
Be that as it amy, there is urgent need for the Federal Government to intervene and positively engage the youths in this part of the country.
Continuous neglect of these youths poses great danger to the entire country.
Members of the National Assembly from these region should please rescue the youths by taking them off the streets .

Help, Terrorists Have Taken Over 64 Communities In Plateau, Gov Caleb Cries Out

The Governor of Plateau State, Celeb Mutfwang has lamented that terrorists are currently occupying no fewer than 64 communities, including schools in the state.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who spoke today, December 26, against the background of the recent attacks on communities that resulted into the death of about 110 people, said that terrorists have totally displaced people in those communities.
He said that the taking over of the communities by the terrorists, has placed immense burden on the state government.
He responded to Channels TV interview by saying that not less than 17 communities were attacked in the recent madness by the terrorists.
“When people are dislocated from their villages and they have to run for shelter, now we are struggling to provide shelter for these people that have been displaced and dislocated from their communities.
“If they stay away from those communities for a sustained period of time, the terrorists would come in.
“As I am talking to you today (Tuesday, December 26), in Riyom Local Government, in Barikin Ladi Local Government, schools have been occupied by these terrorists for almost a number of years now.
“We have not less than 64 communities that have been displaced and their lands have been taken over by these terrorists.”
The Governor condemned the perceived inaction under the previous administration, stating that residents felt the terrorists were given official government backing.
He emphasized that the current occupation of schools did not happen overnight, with some having been seized for as long as five years.
“Under the last regime, the feeling among people in Plateau State particularly the victims of these terrorists attacks is that it looks as if the terrorists were given official government backing to be able to terrorise them because little or nothing was done to repel these attacks.
“I can tell you these schools that are being occupied, it didn’t just start now, some of those schools have been occupied in the last three, four, five years.
“Children, therefore in those schools, have not been able to go to school. They have to relocate. We even have primary health care centres abandoned because of these terrorists which means that our health care system is put in jeopardy.
“What do we need to do? I think this is where the president needs to come in.”
Meanwhile, the death toll from the attacks has increased to 115 from the last figure of 113.
This followed the death of two more people undergoing treatment.

He wanted the people to appreciate the strength and prospects of unity in driving the needed progress for the state.
“We should use the season to renew bonds, lend helping hands and spread love without boundaries.
“I extend my heartfelt wishes to Christian faithful as we mark this year’s Christmas. The birth of Jesus Christ, as we have come to realize, is the most profound message on the power of love and how it can save.
“As families gather to celebrate the season, I offer my sincere goodwill and urge them to look beyond the merriment of the celebration by using the occasion to spread love through giving and kindness.
“At a time like this, we need to look after each other and ensure that those with one need or the other are supported in our little ways. We are brothers and sisters irrespective of colour, tongues and faith, and so, we should explore the strength that unity and collectiveness offers.”

Tinubu Has One Year As President To Earn My Respect Or Condemnation – Soyinka

Professor Wole Soyinka

Noble laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka has said that it would take him one year to assess the performances of President Bola Tinubu and make them public.
Professor Soyinka, who visited the President in Lagos where he observed the Christmas break, said that it has been his personal policy to reserve his comments about new President and his administration for one-year to make up for lost grounds.
“Well, you know, something you may have noticed about me is that most heads of state, when they take office, I always leave them alone for about the first year…because they need time.
“I know when they come in, they don’t start from ground zero. They often start even lower than ground zero and they have to make up.
“So, I’m adopting the same principle this time. When you see me next year, ask the same question again and listen to my answer.”
Professor Soyinka spoke about how he told Tinubu the last time they met not to run for presidency.
“I came here with a seven-point agenda. And we had a very thorough discussion on those items.”
“Actually, it’s an embarrassing visit because when I visited him the last time, it was to try and persuade him not to run for office. I told Atiku (Abubakar) and himself to please leave the ground so young people could run. That’s the last time we met about five years ago.
“So I came to see how he was doing after ignoring my advice. I came to see how both he and his wife were weathering Nigeria, and to wish them a happy Christmas.”
