How PDP Federal Government Looted, Squandered Nation’s Treasury – Presidency

Femi Adesina
Femi Adesina

Nigeria Presidency has asked Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to cover its face in eternal shame for the looting, plundering and squandering of the nation’s treasury by the federal it controlled for 16 years before Nigerians sacked it.
“Instead of being repeatedly impugned and castigated by the PDP and its agents for honestly telling Nigerians that the nation’s treasury has been immensely depleted and its resources looted or squandered under previous administrations of the PDP, President Buhari should be commended for the openness, transparency and accountability which he has now brought to the management of national funds.”
Reacting to the claim by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh that the mony released by President Muhammadu Buhari was the one saved by the administration of Goodluck Jonathan, special adviser to President Buhari on media and publicity, Femi Adesina described such claim as “banal  and ludicrous.
“We also reject the banal  and ludicrous demand by the PDP Spokesman, Olisa Metuh that the PDP Government which was ousted by Nigerians  at the last general elections for running the country aground, be given some credit for “saving” the funds that were disbursed as part of the intervention package approved by President Buhari.
“Mr. Metuh’s claim that a significant amount of the funds came from savings accumulated in the Excess Crude Account and handed over to the Buhari Administration is completely false and deliberately intended to mislead the public.
“As we clearly stated yesterday, the funds approved by President Buhari for sharing to the three tiers of government on Monday came entirely from dividends and taxes paid to the Federation Account by the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas Company (NLNG), not from the Excess Crude Account.
“The disbursed NLNG dividends and taxes  were paid into the Federation Account in June this year and confirmed by the Central Bank’s Statement to the Federal Government on July 7, 2015. The funds cannot therefore be considered “savings” by the Jonathan Administration which left office in May, 2015, as disingenuously claimed by Mr. Metuh.”
Adesina said that it was in keeping with the new spirit of openness in the running of the government that the President promptly disclosed the accrual of the NLNG dividends and taxes to the Federation Account at his recent meeting with State Governors and approved the convening of a special session of the FAAC to share it.
“As a state governor who was present at the meeting remarked, under past administrations, the states never had the benefit of such disclosures.
“Mr. Metuh and others who now ungratefully see Monday’s disbursement of the NLNG proceeds as their “legitimate” earnings  and not a “bailout” from the Federal Government may wish to tell Nigerians if such earnings were ever disclosed by the PDP Federal Government and paid to the states in the past.
“The public may also wish to note that the Buhari Administration itself has never referred to the actions which it has taken to ease the current financial difficulties of states as a “bailout.” [myad]

Buhari Plays Fatherly Role By His Bailout Funds For States Control By PDP, APC, Others – Lai Mohammed

National Publicity Secretary of APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed
National Publicity Secretary of APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed

National Publicity secretary of All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed has described President Muhammadu Buhari’s financial bailout plans for state governments controlled by his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and others to assist them pay salaries of their long-suffering workers with a multi-billion-naira package as a sign of his fatherly nature to the country.
In a statement in Abuja today, Lai Mohammed was particularly delighted that the President has shown that he is truly the father of the nation by eschewing partisanship in approving the intervention fund for all the states, irrespective of which parties they belong to.
”We say this because when states were financially handicapped during the tenure of the last federal government, opposition states were hung out to dry while states belonging to the then ruling PDP got generous bailouts,” it said.
APC said by his action, President Buhari has practicalized his deep understanding of the essence of governance which, more than anything else, is the about the well being of the citizenry.”
The APC spokesman noteed and that the special intervention fund approved by President Buhari was packaged without any external borrowing, despite the paucity of funds occasioned by the fall in the price of crude oil and the unprecedented profligacy of the immediate past administration that dried out the pot of national resources.
He said that early in the life of his administration, President Buhari is walking his talk by showing that with prudence, financial discipline and creativity, plugging financial leakages and a deep sense of patriotism, even the nation’s dwindling resources can still be more effectively utilized for the benefit of Nigerians, rather than be looted by thieving public officials who abuse their office.
Lai Mohammed described as uncharitable and a clear indication that shame has taken flight the situation in which those who created the rot that is now being cleared by President Buhari are the same ones daring to point accusing fingers at the government that inherited their rot.
”The PDP that spent the past 16 years plundering and pillaging Nigeria has boasted that the Nigerian people will soon come, cap in hand, to beg them to return to power. What delusion! What arrogance! Who presided over the looting and the mismanagement of public funds that made it impossible for the nation to absorb the shock of the falling oil prices? Who depleted the Excess Crude Account (ECA) without authorization? Who has degraded the standard of living of
Nigerians?”
APC spokesman said the multi-pronged package approved by President Buhari includes the sharing by the Federal and State Governments of $1.7 billion out of the $2 billion remaining in the ECA; the sharing of about $2.1billion sourced from the LNG’s payment to the Federation Account; and a CBN-packaged special intervention fund that will offer financing to the states, ranging between N250 billion to N300 billion, as a soft loan available to states to access for the purposes of paying backlog of salaries.
Also, the President has approved a debt relief programme that will help states restructure their commercial loans currently put at over N680 billion. The implication is that the life span of such loans will be extended, while reducing the states’ debt-servicing expenditures, thus leaving the states with enough resources – which otherwise would have been removed at source by the banks – to meet their monthly salary obligations, among others.
”History is repeating itself before our very eyes. Some 31 years ago, Buhari, then as a military head of state, also inherited a huge national rot similar to what has been bequeathed to it by the NPN government and had to approve 480 million Naira for the payment of arrears of workers’ salaries. Truly, the President is a man of destiny.”
He said that with thousands of workers made destitute by the frittering away of the commonwealth under a rapacious and wasteful PDP government now being given a new lease of life, their purchasing power being boosted and the nation’s economy being reflated, the change which the President and his party promised the nation has just begun.
”We thank Nigerians for voting the APC into power at the centre and for believing in us even when the horizon became hazy, not out of our making but because of the misdeeds of the past. By their relentless support for President Buhari and the APC, Nigerians have indeed demonstrated that what is worth fighting for is worth defending.” [myad]

Mohammed Haruna’s Verdict: Online Media Is Less Reliable Than Offline Media

Sundiata PostA Veteran journalist and one time Managing Director of New Nigerian Newspapers, Mallam Mohammed Haruna, has passed a verdict of the emerging online media being less reliable and immature compared to the conventional media.
In a keynote address titled: “Has Online Journalism Come of Age” at the launching of one of the frontline online medium, Sundiata Post in Abuja today, Mallam Haruna said though that the invention of the Internet had transformed journalism into a truly all-comers’ trade.
He said that there is always an assumption of conflict between online media’s imperative of speed and the old media’s core value of accuracy which he said, is something new and something that the new media should overcome in time.
“This assumption is largely false. Depending on how much in a rush one is, there has always been conflict between accuracy and speed since the emergence of mass media in the 19th century.
“The difference is that the new media, in its rush to be in real time in the news, seems more wired to sacrifice accuracy on the altar of speed than the old media.
“As a result, online journalism tends to be less reliable than the offline journalism and on this ground, it can be argued that online journalism is less mature than the mainstream journalism.”
Also, the Director-General, National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Emeka Mba, described online journalism as a media for the coming generation.
Mba, represented by Awwalu Salihu, the Director of Public Affairs, NBC, also urged online publishers to focus on credibility, accuracy and professionalism so as to meet the needs of the society.
This was even as the Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, advised online publishers to ensure credibility in order to secure the future of online media in the country, saying that credibility in online media would ensure that the sector is not flooded by biased publishers.
“There is this saying that bad coins tend to drag good coins out of circulation. So, if we leave online publishing for the bad ones, the good ones cannot make a difference.
“We have the good, the bad and the ugly among online publishers; but when we have more of the good ones, the better for the country,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Publisher of Sundiata Post Online Newspaper, Max Amuche, said that credibility and professionalism would continue to be the watchword of the platform.
He said that the publishers had set up a unifying body — the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP)– to ensure that the activity of the media is self-regulated.
Speaking at the event, the National Vice Chairman of GOCOP, Musikilu Mojeed, said owners of online media in the country are accomplished professionals some of whom he said had risen to the topmost management positions in some of Nigeria’s leading dailies.
Mr. Mojeed said GOCOP had been busy in the past months training its members on ethics and the latest trend in the media industry.
He hinted that GOCOP members would soon begin to name and shame charlatans passing themselves off as online newspaper publishers.
He also said the organization was partnering relevant Nigerian authorities to descend heavily on thieves plagiarizing the work of its members. [myad]

ThisDay Newspapers Incur Wrath Of Journalists’ Union Over 9 Months Unpaid Salaries

Nduka-ObaigbenaMembers of the Lagos state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) took to the street around the premises of Thisday newspaper company in Apapa, Lagos today to protest what they alleged to be none payment of nine months salaries of their colleagues working for the organization.
The newspaper management is also alleged to have failed to remit personal income tax, pension cooperative deductions and check-off dues from paid salaries in the last four years.
The union, led by the NUJ Lagos State Chairman, Deji Elumoye, carried placards and barricaded the entrances of the media organization, owned by the President of the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria, Nduka Obaigbena.
Mr. Elumoye, who is also a staff of ThisDay, said he decided to lead the protest against his organization to show that charity begins at home.
He said the protesting journalists were condemning the continuous refusal of the management of ThisDay and 12 other media houses to settle the several months’ arrears of salaries to their workers, especially journalists.
”I am an associate editor in Thisday. But, I chose to picket Thisday first. There are other media organizations owing over two years, and we will go to all of them. It is time to put a stop to non-payment of salaries in media organizations. Many families cannot pay their house rents or their children’s school fees. The journalists are paid peanuts. Yet, they do not get the salaries. It is sad.”
The chairman called on newspaper publishers to prioritise the welfare of workers, adding that anyone that cannot operate and pay workers should close his or her business.
He said the publisher of Thisday, Mr. Obaigbena, who is the president of NPAN, must lead by example by paying his workers all their entitlements.
He called on the National Pension Commission to prosecute media owners, who do not remit workers’ pension contributions to serve as deterrent to others.
In his reaction, in solidarity with the NUJ, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said it was giving full backing to the protest by journalists against several months of unpaid salaries by the management of some prominent media houses in the country.
The acting president of the Congress, Peters Adeyemi, said the principle and logic that the labourer was deserving of his wages was infinite, sacred and sacrosanct as the core of the employer-worker relationship.
The violation of this principle, Mr. Adeyemi pointed out, was not only a negation of the essence and basis of work, but also a peril to the family and statutory obligations of the worker to the State and his God.
“The picketing of ThisDay represents a bold and courageous response after all the processes of an amicable resolution had been exhausted,” the NLC said. “It also represents the beginning of a long process of engagement with other non-salary-paying media organizations.”
Mr. Adeyemi listed the other affected media houses to include the Africa Independent Television (AIT), which is owing about 17 months arrears; Independent Newspapers Limited, publishers of Daily Independent (nine months arrears), and Tell Magazine (eight months).
The others include the National Mirror and Newswatch Daily (7 months), both owned by Jimoh Ibrahim; The News/PM News (9 months); the Daily Champion (18 months); Hallmark owned by Emeka Obasi (8 months) and the Daily Times (6 months).
“We stand shoulder to shoulder on the picket line with our members as they seek to enforce their fundamental rights against these organizations. In the spirit of our cherished slogan of “an injury to one is an injury to all” Congress stands ready to avail our affiliate its full solidarity and support if this unfortunate situation lingers.”
Although the Congress said it needed businesses, especially media businesses that perform the dual role of employment and watchdog, the NLC said it found it a sad irony that these media organizations, which have been in the forefront of the popular struggle for the enforcement of the social contract between the state and the citizenry, would default in exercising a basic and fundamental obligation to their employees.
The default, the NLC noted, is undermining the moral authority of the media houses to speak out on public issues, adding that the affected media organizations must muster all the necessary resources to pay up not just these salary arrears, but subsequent salaries as they fall due.
“The notion by some of the proprietors that the possession alone of the identity card of their media organizations by the journalist is a meal ticket, is patently false and should be discarded,” the NLC said.
“If they believe it is that easy, let them run the organizations from the streets themselves.” [myad]

The statement said: “The Kaduna State Government has commended the people of the state for promptly embracing the crucial necessity of watchful vigilance and attention to security. President Buhari’s Relief Package For States Does Not Include Liquidation Of Excess Crude Account – Presidency

Femi Adesina
Femi Adesina

The Presidency had debunked reports in sections of the  media today that funds will be drawn from the Excess Crude Account for the relief package approved by President Muhammadu Buhari for  states and local governments.
In a statement today, the special adviser to President Buhari on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, said that the measures approved by President Buhari to deal with the problem of unpaid public sector salaries in many states are three parts.
He said that one of the parts was the sharing of the  $2.1 Billion dividend paid to the Federation Account by the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Company (NLNG);
The second one, he asserted, is the Central Bank-packaged special intervention fund that will offer financing to the states, ranging from  N250 Billion to N300 Billion.
“This will be a soft loan available to states for the purposes of paying backlog of salaries.”
The third one, he said, is the debt relief program designed by the Debt Management Office (DMO) that will help states to restructure their commercial loans currently put at over N660 Billion, and extend the life span of such loans while reducing their debt-servicing expenditures.
“The measures approved by President Buhari definitely do not include drawing down the remaining balance in the Excess Crude Account or the “liquidation” of the account as some media outlets have wrongly reported.
“No such decision has been taken or approved by President Buhari, and  last week’s meeting of the National Economic Council clearly concluded that the Excess Crude Account  should be left untouched at this time. [myad]

No Way For Foreign Coach In Nigeria, Segun Odegbami Vows

Segun Odegbami
Segun Odegbami

The 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winner, popularly called Mathematical Segun Odegbami, has kicked against Nigeria resorting to hiring foreign coach for the Super Eagles following the dismissal of Stephen Keshi.
Keshi was relieved of his duties by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Saturday night, for allegedly applying to coach African champions Cote d’Ívoire.
Technical Director of the NFF, Shuaibu Amodu has been mandated to handle the team on an interim basis before a substantive coach; preferably a foreigner is named by the Amaju Pinnick-led NFF Executive Committee.
But in an interview with newsmen, Odegbami warned that he would lead Nigerians to resist the hiring of an foreigner for the Eagles, insisting that our ‘foreign coach is a Nigerian living in Nigeria’.
Odegbami, who raised the alarm about hidden agenda behind the move to hire a foreign coach, said that the NFF does not need to go outside the shores of the country to get a coach for the Eagles as there was one in Nigeria, in the person of former Eagles captain, Sunday Oliseh, who he backed to do better than the foreigner the NFF is shopping for.
“We don’t need a foreign coach for the Eagles. If the NFF has plans to hire a foreign coach, it does not need to go abroad as we have a technically qualified, intellectually sound and world-acclaimed pundit in Sunday Oliseh.
“‘The world recognises the immense knowledge of Oliseh on football matters. He has the education and knows about tactical formations. He has worked with academies in Europe and has a deep knowledge of the game and knows how to manage players. He has distinguished himself amongst his peers. We have gone beyond the level of going overseas to look for coaches for our national team as Nigeria has its own foreign coach in Oliseh.
“There would be a hidden agenda behind the hiring of a foreign coach. So the best option for us is to make use of Oliseh as he possesses all the requirements to succeed on the job. Oliseh is the right candidate, so they should give the job to him.”
The former Shooting Stars of Ibadan striker frowned at Amodu’s appointment as the temporary coach of the Eagles. saying that the recent appointment was in direct conflict with his job as the technical director of the NFF.
“I really have issues with his appointment as he is the technical director of the NFF, with its clear mandate and responsibilities. Now he is being saddled with additional job. It looks untidy.”
