Nigeria Crashes Out Of Africa Cup Of Nation Tournament, Holds South Africa To 2-2

Super Eagles loss

Nigeria will not be in Equatorial Guinea to defend the title it won in 2013 after failing to qualify from their group for the 2015 African Cup of Nations. The super Eagles, today, drew 2-2 with South Africa on Wednesday.

The Super Eagles needed to better Congo’s result to make it through from Group A but fell behind 2-0 in Uyo, capital of Akwa Ibom state, after two goals from Bournemouth’s Tokeo Rantie before battling back to earn a point through a brace from Hull’s Sone Aluko.

But that was not enough as Congo’s win away in Sudan ensured that the Red Devils finished as runners-up behind South Africa and qualify for January’s tournament in Equatorial Guinea.

Elsewhere, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Guinea and Zambia also booked their places in the finals on Wednesday in the final round of qualification matches. Cameroon, Algeria, Mali, Cape Verde Islands, Burkina Faso, Gabon and Senegal will also contest the 16-team tournament.

Tokelo Rantie scored either side of half-time as 10-man South Africa came within two minutes of claiming their first ever win against Nigeria in Nigeria and their first against the Super Eagles in six attempts, dating back to 2004.

Rantie broke the deadlock three minutes before half-time with his third goal of the qualification campaign, before slotting his second four minutes after the restart as South Africa looked on course to wrap-up group A with their fourth win of the campaign.

Sone Aluko scored in the 68th minute to set-up a tense final 25 minutes, which ended in disappointment for South Africa, who relinquished their lead to Aluko, who bagged his second of the night to deny South Africa a famous victory.

Shakes Mashaba’s troops headed into the clash with an unassailable four-point lead at the top of the group and would have been forgiven for taking it easy against Nigeria, who needed a win to stand any chance of defending their Afcon crown in January next year.

But Rantie’s double ensured South Africa continued their superb form away from home, notching-up Bafana’s sixth and seventh goals on the road, while maintaining their unbeaten record, to conclude a hugely successful campaign for Mashaba and his outfit, albeit with a disappointing share of the spoils with the Super Eagles.

Bafana finished the game a man down after Reneilwe Letsholonyane, playing in his 51st game for the country, picked up his second yellow card shortly after Aluko’s goal, leaving the visitors to hold on for a tense 20 minutes, which belonged to Nigeria.

The draw capped a miserable qualification campaign for the reigning Afcon champions, who had to keep one eye on the group’s other fixture in Khartoum, where Congo-Brazzaville edged their hosts to claim the second spot and advance to the tournament early next year.

Nigeria began the brighter as Ahmed Musa squandered three golden opportunities to take the lead inside the opening 20 minutes.

Darren Keet, however, in only his third international cap for South Africa, put in a superb display to deny Musa, who rattled the crossbar before thumping two shots straight at the goalkeeper, who had the better of the young Nigerian.

Just when South Africa looked like heading into the break scoreless, up stepped Rantie, who ghosted past four defenders before beating Vincent Enyeama at his near post to silence the home crowd and send Bafana on their way.

Ahead at the break, South Africa barely gave Nigeria time to breathe before Rantie hit the target for a second time after shrugging-off the last defender, rounding Enyeama and all but securing a win for South Africa.

But Nigeria’s Aluko had other plans. They pulled a goal back after benefiting from some slack South African defence.

With five added minutes looking a formality for Mashaba’s team, Aluko broke South African hearts when he slotted home with barely 90 seconds remaining.– Sapa. [myad]

The North-East Travels Solo, By Garba Shehu

Garba Shehu new

Are the people of the North-Eastern Nigeria willing to accept that they have been abandoned by their leaders, and therefore need to wake up to take their destiny in their hands?

Asked whether the Presidential Declaration Committee would scale down the elaborate ceremonies planned for the next day, following the extremely painful and worrisome killing of 50 children in a science school in Yobe State, the Chairman of the Publicity Committee for President Goodluck Jonathan’s declaration, Senator Aniete Okon said to do so was to give in to the terrorists. The Presidential Declaration Committee, Sen. Okon said, wants to show the world that terrorists cannot stop or even slow down the government of Nigeria. The loud explosion of the bomb that ripped through the lives of the 50 or so children at the school assembly in Potiskum was heard all over the world, drawing condemnations from the United Nations, the European Union, the White House, No. 10 Downing Street moments after the bomber had struck. The reaction of the Nigerian Government came when the pages of the early editions of some newspapers had been rested.

From this, and the entire body language of the President Jonathan administration, it is clear that the government is prepared to move on without the North-East.

How much of this do the leaders of the region know and accept? Why are they dead silent instead of speaking up and grabbing their destiny with both hands?

Only if those questions are answered can the alienated people of the region work towards redressing the injustice against them as citizens of Nigeria.

First of all, it must be recognized that we are in a society in a quick transition. Values and stand points are rapidly changing. As a consequence, many of our leaders who are the actors on stage are carrying on without a sense of history. Our political system is run by a dominant political party that started well as a massive bulwark against military dictatorship only to transform into one of civilian dictatorship. The ruling party at the center has become a personal possession of the President, any sitting President and this is partly responsible for the consequences we are reaping. Every infraction, denial of right, including injustice of any make is considered as a family affair and passed over. In this system of dictatorship those who rebel are censored. Party members, in the circumstance will not do anything to rock the boat because rewards of loyalty which is mostly by way of direct cash payments may be withheld.

As tragic as it might be in the North-East sub-region, their leaders are unable to confront the government or even speak to be heard because for many, their unquestionable following of the government of the day is linked to their survival. An elite that is used to lifestyle of lavish existence at the expense of their poor folk at home is desperately determined to cling to those privileges.

A few of them, such as the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar who have broken ranks and are using their clout to speak against the threats of government sanction and blackmail are able to do so because of their foresight in cultivating independent means of existence. But the danger such bold individuals face is that they can be isolated and victimized, which raises the need for a united voice of the North-East – all of their governors, parliamentarians, labour groups, civil society, judges, lawyers, youth and women groups etc to come together to make a bold statement that can be heard at the United Nations in New York. The people of North-East must do this themselves – speak with one voice, saying that “all of us, Muslim, Christians, are endangered by the slaying and the bombings about which our government, the government of Nigeria appears unwilling or unprepared to bring to an end”.

The North-East should look to the world for help because, in addition to the incapacity of the home government, the situation is compounded by the military’s long tenure in government, which wasted three to four decades of peace that could have been used to move forward and modernize the armed forces.

With the current halt of arms sales to Nigeria by some countries and the winding down of our global diplomacy and influence under the current administration, question mark hangs, not only over life and property in Northern Nigeria but the existence of Nigeria as is currently mapped.

To all these, add the disarray caused by controversy in which the Defence Ministry, the National Security Council and the service chief are mired, and you have a perfect recipe for mindless bombing and killing on the scale of genocide.

Against all these, the North-East must speak for themselves, with one voice, because truly as things now are, they are left to their own fate. They are on their own as we say in the Nigeria parlance. Calls upon them by both Atiku and Emir Lamido Sanusi to take up,self-defense must be heeded. To overcome, the region must let the world know that the fight against Boko Haram, like other wars against terror, is both domestic and global and that the international community should come to their aid. The traditional ruler was reportedly abducted by the gunmen at Kokori community, Ethiope East local government area of Delta State.

He was reportedly whisked away on Sunday to an unknown place while returning to his kingdom from an engagement.

IYC in a statement signed by its Spokesperson, Mr. Eric Omare, said the abduction of Ebikeme, popularly known as Pere Ekere was an attack on the entire Ijaw nation.

“We regard the kidnap of Pere Ekere, who is not just a traditional ruler but a spiritual leader to the Ijaw people as an attack on the entire Ijaw nation.”

Naira Nose-Dives Against Dollar, As CBN’s Effort Fails

Okonjo Iweala

Nigeria’s naira has weakened to a record low against the dollar despite the promises made by the Central Bank of Nigeri (CBN) to defend the currency, even as the government plans to cut spending failed to stabilise the market. The market has been hit by a fall in oil prices.

According to Gareth Brickman and Catherine Bennett, Johannesburg-based strategists at ETM Analytics in an e-mailed note today, there is “still no reprieve for the naira despite the positive local developments at the start of the week.

“It appears the market is still unconvinced with the latest ad hoc tightening measures from the central bank.”

The currency of Africa’s largest crude producer declined a second day, down 1.4 percent to 175.48 against the dollar at 11:42 am in Lagos, the commercial capital.

The nation’s foreign reserves fell to $37.6 billion on November 14, their lowest level since July 1, after central bank interventions to bolster the naira.

Nigeria’s government is planning to cut spending by 6 percent next year and lower its benchmark oil price to $73 a barrel, down from from $77.50 in this year’s budget, Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said November 16.

The nation’s finance minister, Okonjo-Iweala has announced, followed central bank Governor Godwin Emefiele’s pledge last week to continue defending the naira with interventions that strong dollar demand for imports, the repatriation of profits by companies as well as uncertainty about the ability of central bank to manage the exchange rate is undermining the naira.

Kunle Ezun, a Lagos-based currency strategist at Ecobank Transnational, said: “the central bank is expected in the market this afternoon to prop up the naira.” [myad]

420 Wrestlers Register To Take Part In Governor Dickson Wrestling Championship

Wrestlers

The second edition of Governor Seriake National Wrestling Championships has witnessed an unprecedented registration by states and clubs as over 420 wrestlers have been enlisted for the five-day bouts in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. The second edition will run from December 15 to 20 at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, Yenagoa.

The female wrestlers will be staged on December 17. About 32 states and four clubs have filled and returned their forms for the championship.

Speaking to newsmen in Lagos, President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Dr. Daniel Igali, expressed his federation’s gratitude to Governor Dickson for his support and personal commitment to the growth of wrestling in Nigeria.

Igali said that he was overwhelmed with the number of wrestlers registered for the second edition of the championships, adding that it would be a befitting Christmas carnival for the people of Bayelsa State.

“My special gratitude goes to the sports-loving governor Dickson for accepting to host and sponsor the championship in spite of his busy political schedule. The governor is like a pillar for the wrestling federation. His support has been tremendous and he personally visited the wrestlers in Glasgow, Scotland during the Commonwealth Games. He always has one-on-one relationship with the wrestlers and even motivates them financially.

“I am surprised at the number of wrestlers coming for the championships which is an improvement on the first edition. My technical team is on ground and well equipped to handle the situation though we have warned that only wrestlers with valid licence would be allowed to participate in the fiesta.”

The five-day championships will feature wrestlers in freestyle, male and female, and Greco-Roman. [myad]

Adamawa Trains 10,000 Hunters To Tackle Boko Haram

Adamawa governor

With the apparent failure by the conventional soldiers to defeat Boko Haram as quickly as has been expected, the Adamawa state government has decided to train and enlist the services of 10,000 local hunters, vigilantes and civilian JTF in liberating towns captured by the insurgents .

The government has agreed to train the local hunters to change their perception, so that they would execute their duties according to the rule of engagement.

As part of efforts to fortify the trouble areas in the state against the onslaught of the Islamist extremists, the government has agreed to deploy the services of the local hunters.

The state governor, Bala James Ngilari, on Monday made the disclosure through his spokesman, P. P Elisha, shortly after an emergency meeting with security chiefs in the state.

Elisha said that at least 10,000 hunters will be enlisted in the scheme as members of the local vigilante known as the Civilian JTF, to fortify the towns and aid the security forces in dislodging Boko Haram.

He said that the group would be called “Civilian JTF” and will be saddled with the responsibility of assisting the law enforcement agencies in their job of providing security to the society.

“This however is not a licence for them to take laws into their hands by harassing or arresting innocent members of the society.”

Governor Uduaghan Writes-Off Interest On CBN’s N2 Billion Fund For Beneficiaries

CBN
Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has announced that state government will pay off the 9 percent interest of N180 million on the N2 billion Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Fund (MSMED) which the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) officially rolled out today in Asaba, the Delta state capital.
Speaking at the grand occasion, Governor Uduaghan said that the loan would be given out at zero interest and that the government will bear the cost of logistics in the disbursement of the fund.
Dr. Uduaghan received the symbolic N2 billion cheque from the CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele.
Governor Uduaghan commended the CBN governor for the support he has given to the state, saying “you are here to roll out MSMED fund which is the brain-child of your leadership in the CBN. “The fund is not being rolled out because you are from the state, it is being done because Delta State has prepared for the fund. “We have worked hard to meet the criteria for the fund; you can recall that at the launching of this fund in August by President Goodluck Jonathan, Delta State was one of the two states that qualified for the fund.
“I want to assure the CBN that the fund will go to the real beneficiaries, you don’t need to be a politician to get the fund, you must meet the criteria before benefiting from it, I want to say that the whole N2 billion will go to the beneficiaries as the state government will provide the logistics needed, this loan will be at zero interest rates to Deltans as the state government will pay the 9 per cent interest on the loan which amounts to N180 million to the Central Bank of Nigeria.”
The governor explained that the Delta state government in designing its micro credit programme has  “been cautiously  and consciously biased towards the pro-poor in our execution of our programme, we have laid emphasis in the areas of education, health, water supply, transportation which benefits the pro-poor, those people at the bottom of the pyramid, we ensure that we can touch these set of people, that is why this type of programme gladdens my heart.”
He charged old participants in the programme to put their experience at the disposal of new entrants by mentoring them to ensure that they pay back as at when due so that the programme does not suffer set back.
The CBN Governor, Mr. Emefiele said that the apex bank initiated the N220 billion MSMED fund as “a catalyst to stimulate economic growth and poverty alleviation in Nigeria, the fund couldn’t have come out at a better time than now where there is fall in price of oil.
“It will be a means of diversifying our economic base through production of goods locally and reduce the pressure on our foreign reserve.”
He said that the fund has been structured to be accessed by those who really needed them the most rather than those who were  privileged politically.
He commended Governor Uduaghan’s administration for designing a robust micro credit programme that has imparted greatly on the less endowed segment of the society.
“It is no mean feat to set up a Ministry to alleviate our people from poverty into prosperity, I took note of some of the things produced by the beneficiaries of the micro-credit programme, from the young graduates to the elderly, it tells that when you are faced with challenges, you turn to your creative ability to create development for yourself and your country, I salute you (Governor Uduaghan).
“The Ministry of Poverty Alleviation have done what the CBN want to do, working with people, banks and granting loans to ensure economic growth and diversification.”
High point of the occasion was the presentation of N2 billion cheque to the Governor of Delta State, Dr. Uduaghan and the presentation of certificates to beneficiaries of the MSMED fund. [myad]
