Atiku Laments: I’m Ashamed For The Worsening Security Situation In Nigeria, Calls For World Intervention

pic 2(2)
Former Nigeria Vice President Atiku Abubakar is worried at the frightening stage Nigeria has reached now in the area of sordid security situation where thousands of Nigerians are being killed daily even as other are fleeing their homes with the heightened Boko Haram attacks even as he begged countries that have successfully dealt with similar situation to come to the rescue of Nigeria.
Atiku said that houses and farms of the unfortunate citizens of Nigeria, especially in the North East, have been and are still being destroyed, adding: “things should never have got to this stage.”
Atiku further lamented that thousands of Nigerians today “do not know where to go or how to restart their lives. That is the degree to which we have come in this country. I say this with reluctance and with shame. The situation in which we find ourselves today is grave.”
Atiku made these lamentations today when he addressed world press conference in Abuja.
He express deep regret to learn that Mubi, which is one the largest towns in Adamawa State of northeast Nigeria, has been taken over by the terrorist group commonly known as Boko Haram.
“As you may know, in recent weeks and months, Mubi has been a town to which displaced persons from further north have fled for safety after their communities fell to Boko Haram. As I speak, the inhabitants of Mubi, together with those who went there for safety, find themselves at the mercy of this terrorist group.”
He lamented that much of Borno, and the north of Adamawa and Yobe states is already at the mercy of the terrorists.  He recalled that the whole thing started a few months ago with the taking over of Bama, which is nearly 400 kilometres from Yola, capital of Adamawa State.
“The next major town to be taken by terrorists was Gwoza, where a terrorist caliphate flag has long been hoisted. Smaller towns near Gwoza such as Pulka and Limankra are equally not free.  “Next was Madagali.  The town is still being occupied. Then fell Gulak. Next was Michika, then Bazza.  Next was the twin town of Uba which is half Adamawa and half Bornu. Its neighboring town of Lassa was also overrun. Uba was the latest town captured before the terrorists trampled on Mubi.  “People from these troubled areas are now pouring into Yola for safety.”
Atiku said that as somebody who hails from Adamawa State, he is bound to be emotional at the fate of his people, regretting further that for whatever reason, the nation’s defence forces have been unable to cope and unable to defend the citizens.
While sympathizing with the soldiers who found themselves in a situation not of their making, the former Vice President described the situation now prevailin as “a crisis of leadership.”
Atiku wondered how it was possible that a great nation like Nigeria should find itself in a situation where a handful of terrorists is able to invade a town as large as Mubi with a population of about 300,000 even after the government had assured the nation that the budget for security would be enlarged so that the security agencies and military would be in a better position to tackle the insurgency.
He posed other questions as to how were the insurgents able to so easily take a town of this size, and the people find themselves defenseless and undefended?
“How is it that the people have been made to suffer as they have?”
He recalled how he had previously spoken about the deteriorating security situation in the country on a number of occasions and that on such occasions he had deliberately restrained himself from speaking in a manner that might be construed as distracting the government and the security forces as they grappled with the dire security situation.
“But the scale of injustice the people of Nigeria are suffering has reached a stage where I am obliged to amplify my concerns. Many of our citizens, unable to come to terms with why a so-called “Africa’s best army” has been unable to confront this horrendous situation, are increasingly assuming that this whole thing is about electoral politics.
“They suspect that the seeming inability of the government to end the crisis is a ploy to weaken some parts of the country ahead of the 2015 elections. Can we, in all honesty, blame them for having those suspicions?
“I call upon the international community to help us.  I am making a special appeal to countries with sufficient know-how and experience in tackling terrorism to increase their assistance to us.
“The relief agencies that are already working here should please double their efforts. And all people of goodwill should help in any way they can and to do more than they have been doing to alleviate the pain and suffering that we Nigerians face through this insurgency.”
Atiku said that at a time when Nigerians are being bombarded with horror stories of ugly events elsewhere in the world, in West Africa, “we are faced with the Ebola epidemic and other trouble spots – I draw your attention to a humanitarian crisis which is also a matter of international security.
“This Boko Haram insurgency has been with us now for several years but has, in these last few days, taken a step further towards being a disaster of unimaginable proportions. Hundreds of thousands of people are at risk. Nigeria needs the world’s support. The world must not abandon Nigerians in our time of need.” [myad]

Boy, 16, Stabs His Teacher To Death, Gets 20-Year Jail

William of Britain

A 16-year-old schoolboy, Will Cornick, has been jailed for at least 20 years for stabbing a teacher to death in front of her class in a murder that shocked Britain.

Will Cornick was 15 when he stabbed popular teacher, Ann Maguire seven times with a kitchen knife as she taught a Spanish class at Corpus Christi Catholic College in Leeds, northern England, in April.

After attacking her, he sat back down at his desk and said: “Good times” as his horrified classmates looked on, prosecutor Paul Greaney told Leeds Crown Court.

Cornick had previously spoken of his deep hatred of Maguire, a 61-year-old who had been due to retire within months.

Judge Peter Coulson told Leeds Crown Court today that the boy’s pride in his actions and lack of remorse were “truly grotesque”.

Coulson jailed him for life, with a minimum of 20 years to be spent behind bars before he can be considered for release on licence. But he added that “it’s quite possible that day may never come”.

Cornick, who pleaded guilty to murder, had spoken of wanting to attack other teachers including a pregnant woman “so as to kill her unborn child”.

His identity was initially kept secret due to a court order which was lifted on Monday.

Cornick was described by fellow pupils and teachers as an academic high achiever from a middle-class family and a quiet loner.

His parents are “at a loss to understand” what their son did, Greaney said.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, Maguire’s husband Don spoke of the loss of his “beautiful, vivacious, generous, caring” wife.

“I’m still a dad but cannot help my children understand, cannot help them come to terms, cannot help them lessen the pain…I can no longer be a dad,” he said. [myad]

Burkina Faso’s Army Gets African Union’s 2-Week Ultimatum To Return To Civilian Rule

Burkina Faso

The African Union has given Burkina Faso’s army two weeks to return the west African state to civilian rule and threatened sanctions if it failed to comply.

Simeon Oyono Esono, head of the AU’s Peace and Security Council who spoke today in Spanish said: “We ask the armed forces to transfer power to the civil authorities, and the council has determined a period of two weeks for the transfer.”

The army has stepped into a power vacuum left by ousted leader, Blaise Compaore, who was forced to resign the presidency last week in the wake of violent demonstrations at his attempt to extend his 27-year-rule.

Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zida was named the interim head of state.

“The African Union is convinced that the change has been against democracy. However, we know that popular pressure led to the resignation of the president. Those circumstances were taken by the armed forces to get into power, but it originated from the people,” Esono said.

“Having taken note of the origin of the popular revolt which led the military to assume power, we determined a period of two weeks, and after that period we are going to apply sanctions.”

The United Nations, US and EU have also called for the country’s military top brass to hand power back to civilians.

After the two week period, the AU will appoint a special envoy to the country and meet again “to examine the situation and see the steps to be followed.” [myad]

Stop It! Court Orders Anti-Tambuwal Lawmakers Not To Re-Convene House Sitting

justice

The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court has issued an interim order of injunction stopping the House of Representatives from reconvening its sitting until Friday when a motion ex-parte that was lodged before it by the Speaker of the House, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, would be heard.

Justice Ahmed Mohammed who gave the order today, further directed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), its Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’Azu and five other defendants in the matter, to appear before the court on that date to show cause why the reliefs being sought by the Speaker should not be granted.

The court ordered all the parties to maintain status quo pending the hearing and determination of the motion before it,  saying the order was necessary so as to preserve the ‘Res’ of the matter that was brought before it by the Speaker and his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Moving the application yesterday, counsel to the plaintiffs, Mr. Sunday Ameh, SAN, told the court that despite the pendency of a substantive suit that was filed by his clients last week Friday, he said that the defendants were  still plotting to remove the 1st plaintiff, Tambuwal, as Speaker of the House. Dark Cloud Hovers On Nigeria: Army Commanders In Trouble, Gunmen Free Prisoners, Kill Many At Islamic Celebration

Attackers
Nigeria appears to be going deeper into security and political confusion about 144 inmates of prison in Koton Karfi in Kogi state were freed by gunmen who threw the prison open, just as some people were killed by unknown gunmen at an Islamic celebration in Adamawa state today.
This was even as six Commanders of the Nigerian army fighting the insurgents in the North East are believed to be facing military inquest for deserting the battle ground, thus paving the way for members of the deadly Boko Haram to take over and occupy Mubi last week. Mubi has been described as the second largest towns in Adamawa state.

The state Controller of prison, dams Omale, told newsmen today that the prison came under attack of armed “external forces’’ between 9.30 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Sunday, November 2.

He said that 145 inmates were in the prison as at the time of attack, saying that 119 of the inmates were awaiting trial while 26 were convicts. Omale said that one of the inmates was shot dead during the confusion that followed the invasion.

The controller, however, said that 12 of the inmates were either re-arrested or returned on their own, adding that police and army personnel were quickly mobilised to counter the invaders, but the damage had been done before their arrival.

However, residents of the sleepy town, which is just a 25-minute drive to Lokoja, the state capital, claimed that the attackers held sway for more than two hours.

It would be recalled that the 50-bed prison facility built in 1934 was similarly attacked in February 2012 by unknown gunmen.

The report said that 136 inmates were set free while 27 were re-arrested during the 2012 attack.

Among those freed from the prison on Sunday night were armed robbery and murder convicts.

The four cells in the prison had their iron bars removed while the record office was thoroughly ransacked.

It was also observed that the ceiling of the building was shattered and the clinic turned upside down.

Governor Idris Wada of Kogi state, in company of his deputy, Yomi Awoniyi, and the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Prisons Service, Aminu Suley, later visited the prison to assess the extent of damage.

This was even as six military commanders, including an injured Lieutenant Colonel, were arrested by the military for withdrawing from Mararaba, Michika, Madagali, Mubi and later Vimtim when Boko Haram insurgents attacked the communities last week.

It was learnt that an unspecified number of soldiers were also in detention for allegedly abandoning the communities, thereby making it easy for the insurgents to have an upper hand.

A reliable military source hinted that the movement of five of the commanders had been restricted to the officers mess in a military formation, saying: “one of them, a Leutenant Colonel, is receiving treatment at the MRS in Yola for serious injuries he sustained when the car in which he was escaping somersaulted several times.”

He said the injured officer would join his colleagues in the officers mess on recovery.

“Today, the military authorities arrested five commanders around the Mubi axis of Adamawa State. The sixth is a Lt. Colonels. Some of those arrested were at Mararaba, Madagali, Michika and other locations. I think the military leaders are saying that the soldiers did not resist the Boko Haram when they invaded the place.”

The Defence authorities are said to have already commenced investigations into the activities of all its personnel in relation with the capture of Mubi, the second largest town in Adamawa State and other supposedly “fortified locations,” including Vimtim, the home town of the Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh.

The insurgents had reportedly burnt Badeh’s residence, a clinic and a civic centre in the community on Thursday.

Meanwhile, no fewer than 23 people were killed today in a suicide attack on a Shiite religious ceremony in Potiskum, Yobe state in shooting by soldiers.

A suicide bomber was said to have blown himself up amid a large crowd of Shiite Muslims holding the annual Ashura ceremony to commemorate the murder of Imam Husseyn, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed, in Karbala 1,300 years ago.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but militants from the Boko Haram Islamist group, who have waged an insurgency in the region for five years, have been responsible for previous attacks in Nigeria.

Soldiers who deployed after the blast, in the Tsohuwar Unguwa area of the town, broke into the nearby Shiite seminary and opened fire on mourners who were sheltering from the blast, killing six, said Mustapha Lawan Nasidi, leader of the Shiites in Potiskum.

“A suicide bomber ‎detonated explosives he was carrying among a large crowd of people commemorating Ashura near our seminary, Madrasatul Fudiyya, killing 15 people and injuring more than 50 others,” Nasidi said.

“To our shock, soldiers who deployed to the scene shortly after the blast broke into the seminary, where some people had taken shelter, and opened fire on them, killing six and injuring four others,” he said. [myad]

Kano Pillars Emerge Champions Of Nigeria Professional Football League

Kano Pillars

Kano Pillars have won the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) for the third successive time. They now join Iwuanyanwu Nationale (now Heartland) and Enyimba as the only Nigerian clubs to have won the premier division three times on the bounce.

The Kano club emerged champions of the Nigerian top flight after defeating relegated Nembe City 4-0 on Sunday.

The League Management Company announced via its Twitter account: “It is technically official! Kano Pillars are Glo Premier League champions for a third consecutive season.”

Azeez Shobowale scored twice while Gambo Mohammed returning from injury after several weeks out with a thigh injury got among the goals. The prolific Adamu Hassan also scored as Kano Pillars ran over City 4-0.

Second-placed Enyimba could not keep up the pressure and force the title race down to the final day as they held Dolphins to a 1-1.

Chidiebere Okolie put Dolphins ahead after 54 minutes and Enyimba were left to toil before Mfon udoh scored 21 minutes later.

Kano Pillars, now on 65 points, have opened a four-point lead over Enyimba, making the final game between the two sides next Sunday just elementary.

Warri Wolves who could have also forced the title race to the final day played out a surprise a 1-1 draw against relegation-threatened Gombe United.

Nazim Abutrika gave Gombe United a shock lead inside the opening of the quarter of an hour. Chigozie Agbim saved a penalty off Gbolahan Salami to preserve Gombe United’s lead.

But Agbim could not keep out Oghenekaro Etebo’s stunner in the 64th minute. Wolves remain in third place on 60 points.

Abia Warriors and Nasarawa United are fourth and fifth respectively. Nasarawa United played a 0-0 draw at Rangers while goals from Marshall Okoro, Chisom Chikatara and Chima Uluocha helped Abia Warriors to a 3-0 win over Sharks. [myad]

Tonye Princewill Describes PDP Congresses In Rivers As Sham

Tonye rincewill
A prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers state, Prince Tonye Princewill has described the party’s ward congresses held in the state on Saturday as a sham and that it is a weak beginning for the party in the state.
According to him, the congresses were stage-managed by the faction of the former federal minister of state for education, Mr. Nyeson Wike.
In a statement today, signed by his media assistant, Wabiye Idoniboye-Obu, Prince Princewill called on the National executives of the party to quickly resolve the Rivers State political troubles before they get out of hand.
“The congresses had already been done. The panel had already been settled and the electoral umpire had already been compromised. All their planning was in vain. “For them, the congress was just an opportunity for the masses to fight and destroy things. They do not care if Rivers people die as long as they win. We do. We care; and that’s why we stayed clear.
“The Rivers State Wike led PDP Exco don’t realize we are several steps ahead of them; none of the key aspirants were involved in the congresses. That should be a signal for the party. Our silence will speak louder than our words. In the end, PDP will both sit up and address this sham or they will lose us and loose Rivers state. Nothing is impossible.
“Our people say the difference between a small snake and a big worm is teeth. Neither Amaechi nor Wike will deliver Rivers state because even the grass will reject them. It’s time to start afresh. It’s time for renewal. And all of their money and more will never change that.” [myad]
