A 20 minutes rainstorm that fell in parts of Benin City, Edo State capital, yesterday has rendered many people homeless.Roofs of over 50 houses were blown off in many parts of the state capital, including Ekewan, Agbonma, Agho and Evbuotubu.
Some people escaped death when the rainstorm pulled down a gigantic billboard located along Ekewan road. The billboard destroyed part of the perimeter fence housing the Rosicrucian Order.
An eye witness, Henry Omoregie, whose workshop is behind the billboard said they were lucky that the billboard did not fall towards his workshop.
“When the rain started, we were hiding here. Some persons were in a big bus. Suddenly we saw the billboard shaking. I quickly took my car away. We were lucky it fell on the fence.”
Irene Ero, a worker at the Rosicrucian Order, said a strong wind accompanied the rain. [myad]
A Lagos High Court, Igbosere, has sentenced one Onyekachi Abazu to death by hanging. He was found guilty of stealing the sum of N9,000 and a BMW car marked CM659JJJ from one Obioma Obiekwe at a gun point.

Nigeria female heroes, the Super Falcons over-ran the South African Bayana Bayana by 2-1 in the first semifinal of the Africa Women’s Championship, staged at Sam Nujoma stadium today. The Falcons have thus cruised into final and book a ticket for the upcoming 2015 Fifa Women’s World Cup in Canada.
The South African team was on the back foot as early as kick off time just as keeper Thokozile Mndaweni was kept on her toes by Francisca Ordega.
Portia Modise could have opened the scoring through a free kick in the 23rd minute but her strike went wide.
However, it was Asisat Oshoala courtesy of a deflected finish that came off Janine Van Wyk to break the deadlock in the 38th minute.
That was followed by a reckless challenge on Desire Oparamozie by Van Wyk who was cautioned before Oshoala completed her brace at the stroke of halftime.
Bayana came back strong after restart in a bid to turn around their fortunes as Modise was flagged offside seven minutes into the second half.
With Falcons keeping up with their opponents resurgence, Esther Sunday was brought into fray in place of Ordega.
That did not deter Vera Pauw troops as Refiloe Jane pulled one back in the 67th minute with question marks if the goal did cross the line.
They continue to dominate the game but the former champions countered through Oshoala who failed to get support upfront as the clock wound down with less than minutes to time.
Sunday’s shot in the 88th minute was not enough to ensure she inked her name in the score sheet but the the most successful women’s side managed to hold to contest for a record seventh title. [myad]
With the 2015 general elections fast approaching, many of the aspirants jostling for various elective posts have intensified campaigns with a view to seeking nomination of their respective political parties.
Like many other states, the political temperature in Bauchi state is steadily rising with horse trading and politicians running from pillar to pole in search of support from various political quarters.
Interestingly, the focus in the two major political parties in the state; the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the main opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), is on who takes over the mantle from Governor Isa Yuguda in May, 2015.
Reasons for the interest are many considering the delicate political equation which has structured the state into three powerful political blocs; Bauchi South Senatorial Zone which has the incumbent, Bauchi North Senatorial Zone and Bauchi Central Senatorial Zone.
There are strong indications that the calculations in the PDP may not favour Bauchi South in the October 29 governorship primaries. The South is likely to be excluded in the contest for the coveted office having enjoyed the governorship seat twice for almost 16 years.
While the contest for nomination is likely to be between the North and the Central in the PDP, the opposition APC is likely to capitalise on PDP’s rotational principles to bring up its flag bearer for the February governorship election from the South. Therefore, political pundits in Bauchi state are of the view that this will pose a serious threat to the PDP considering the voting strength of the South.
Under this calculation, chances of the PDP to retain power would further shrink unless the party is wise enough to field a candidate that will be accepted by all the zones. It must be a candidate that is seen as a moderate politician with expertise to garner support across the zones; a candidate without political adversaries to work against the interest of the party after the primaries.
Another interesting aspect of the gubernatorial race is the army of aspirants that have indicated interest in aspiring for the coveted office. The large numbers of campaign posters on billboards and buildings are pointers to the magnitude of interests pervading the political landscape of the state.
Notably among the PDP governorship aspirants are Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, Senator Babayo Garba Gamawa, Deputy Senate Leader Abdul Ningi, Barrister Ahmed Ibrahim Dandija, Alhaji Aminu Hammayo, Dr Musa Babayo, Alhaji Mohammed Nadada Umar and Senator Baba Tela.
Rounding the list of aspirants from APC are Dr. Ibrahim Yakubu Lame, Barrister Mohammed Abubakar, Engineer Sadiq Mahmud, Senator Suleiman Gamawa, Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Tuggar and Engineer Nuhu Gidado.
Even though there is nothing wrong in one seeking for an elective post, but a cursory review of the aforementioned aspirants across the two major political parties shows that most of the aspirants are just paper tigers with little or no political wherewithal and rudimentary administrative skills to lead the state. More so with the rising popularity of the opposition APC, the PDP must field a credible and accepted candidate to sustain the party’s lead.
Therefore, the only PDP aspirants that possess the required ingredients to appeal to the electorates irrespective of party affiliation is the former Minister of State for Health, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate (Cigarin Misau). Considering his track record of leadership in the health sector and humility in politics, Pate will be the right aspirant to clinch the ticket of the PDP.
Pate, a medical doctor, had in July last year voluntarily resigned from President Goodluck Jonathan’s cabinet to take up a position of a professor at the Duke University, Global Health Institute in the United States. He is also a senior Adviser to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation based in Washington DC. Also in recognition of his feat, the Harvard School of Public Healthy (HSPH) and Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) recognised him in 2012 along with 15 ministers of health from Africa, Asia and Latin America for their demonstrated leadership to strengthening health systems and improving health outcomes.
In addition to his uncommon professional qualities, the Cigari is a modest and humble politician and his analysis of issues of development distinguishes him from all the aspirants. This is why his manifestos are hinged on an improved management of the state resources, improved investment climate for the private sector, deep youth and women participation in management, health reform, agricultural development, education, sports and tourism, infrastructural development, peace and progress, among many other areas of priorities. He is one aspirant that is also friendly with all segments of the society in the state due to his philanthropic activities.
Apart from his unmatched qualities, the PDP should also bank on the goodwill of his extended family in the state to put the cap on him as a loyal party member.
The expectation therefore is that the PDP would open its eyes to the realities in the state and ensure that only the best aspirants with an appetite for development and commitment to improving lives emerges. A stitch in time saves nine.
With the resignation of seven ministers in the federal cabinet on Monday, President Goodluck Jonathan has made some adjustments in the cabinet. In the process, Dr. Nurudeen Mohammed who is the minister of state II for foriegn affairs is now to supervise the ministry of information in place of Labaran Maku who has resigned. The minister of defence Lt. General Aliyu Gusau will now oversee the affairs of the ministry of defence while the minister of state for health, Dr. Haliru Alhassan will now take over full responsibility as minister of health following the resignation of Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu. Speaking to reporters today shortly after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, Dr. Nurudeen said that Professor Viola has been moved from the ministry of foreign affairs to replace Mr. Nyesom Wike as minister of state for Education. Dr. Nurudeen said that President Jonathan asked Dr. Olusegun Aganga to take over full responsibility of the Minister of industry, trade and investment with the exit of Dr. Samuel Ortom. According to the supervising minister of information, the Minister of special duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki was also directed to take over the supervision of the ministry of labour and productivity following the resignation of Chief Emeka Wogu. The minister of Niger Delta, Dr. Stephen Oru was asked to take over full supervision of the ministry in substantive capacity as a result of the exit of Darius Isiaku.
Son of late Sheikh Mahmud Gumi, a prominent Kaduna based Islamic Cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Mahmud Gumi has advised both General Muhammadu Buhari, a Presidential aspirant on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) and the current President Goodluck Jonathan who has been endorsed by virtually all the stakeholders in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2015 election to shelve the idea. In an open letter he addressed particularly to General Buhari today, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi made it clear that though corruption ranks high in things that have held Nigeria’s progress back but that what Nigeria actually needed as a priority is peace and stability. He said that if Jonathan decides to come back for second term, Boko Haram insurgence will be real, adding: “not the political one we see. The turmoil will engulf the whole country not only the north. That is why I also call on PDP to present some other candidates.” As for Buhari, Sheikh Ahmad said that he has so many antagonists, adding that his supporters have the biggest proportion of the underprivileged of the society which is the petrol that can be easily ignited by the slightest spark. “The spark will be when you’re declared the loser. And you know you can very well lose if the Christians follow their church -and why not in this era of mediocrity.” He then suggested that APC should work out the modalities of supporting somebody like governor Rotimi Ameachi or governors Okorocha/Kwankwaso or Nasiru El-rufai or speaker Aminu Tambuwal ticket. “And the PDC will have Akpabio/Muazu or Ribadu or Shekaru, the next four years will. – insha Allah – witness stability both in the north and south. And the electoral body will get the necessary infrastructure that subsequently the next election will be free and fair and the true reflection of Nigerians.” The full text of the letter goes thus: Assalamu Alaikum The Humble People’s General. I know I have access to your privy but this is meant for others to learn also. The prophet -peace be upon him- told one of the most honest and truthful of his companions Abu Zar Algafary: “oh Abu Zar, I truly love for you what I love for myself. I indeed see that you are weak so never accept to lead even two people and never accept safekeeping of the orphans wealth’ An honest and candid advice from the prophet that is still valid today for any leader who’s weakness borders on leadership qualities. The reason for Abu Zar’s weakness has nothing to do with his credibility or truthfulness. Never! The prophet was narrated as saying: “there is nobody under the shadows of trees or bare sun that is more honest in speech than Abu Zar” Abu Zar – May Allah be pleased with him- is ascetic and inmaterialistic. Abu Zar is incorruptible. And yet he is not suitable for leadership. I am not claiming to be even by an atom’s weight anything close to our noble prophet, yet I am encouraged to give you these same advice by the virtue that you are not also close to Abu Zar in piety. We are living in a time of great tribulations and fitnah especially for this Ummah because of our collective iniquities, ignorance of religious instructions and the love of Dunyah. Sir, your weakness is not in your past impeccable record of accountability of public wealth and the fight against corruption and indispiline. Your weakness is in your inability to control men compounded further by your strict and obsessive rejection of corruption. Don’t be surprised. You may need to understand that Islam being a pragmatic religion allows the use of Zakkat and public wealth as an instrument to pacify and lure influential people for the sake of rightouness, peace and stability. In modern governance today it translate into the security vote. Thus men are also controlled by money. So if your policy of governance is obsessibly centered on sealing tight the use of money you will have great problem with men. An Arab poet said: “a fool cannot be the leader of his people but the true leader of the people must feign foolishness”. It’s convenient for your ardent supporters to quote copiously from the annals of history your great achievements but when your failures and weaknesses were pointed out they say that was in the past. Is the lessons of past history only good for the positive achievements? Doesn’t that also explains our incessant failures? Your Excellency, good intentions are never enough. In the past, because of your clean records and straightforwardness you were lured by men who want only the vanities Dunya to uproot a young democracy on the caprices of fighting corruption. Corruption is no doubt an evil but there is a more monstrous evil than corruption. That is turmoil and insecurity. Peace and stability are the most important part of governance that no price is to high for them. The lack of peace, stability and security is the major predicament of this nation since independence. So when you were naively used by men to derail one, that is the greatest disservice you committed to the nation the ills of which we are yet to recover from. Do you truly believe Allah is still not in cognizance of that? You were lead to uproot a duly elected leader and incasserate him for close to two years knowing fully well that he has no charge of even the corruption that was labeled against him. Yes, Shagari was the leader and therefore he bears all the responsibility of misdeeds in his government, so also you were a leader and you should bear all the responsibility of derailing the peace and stability of governance in this country as a consequence of that putsch. You weakness in control of men became evident when the very people that used you to revolt against a constituted authority came back to uproot you from the seat of power. Your own kinsmen without a gun cocked in your defense. Today the corruption you were deceived to fight against has reached unimaginable level coupled with the worst state of insecurity and peace in the nation. There was just recently an attempt on your life like many of us. All this because you the honest people that are given the privilege of strengthening the Armed forces left it to meddle in politics. We thus lost everything. Neither the power nor the security. A believer is not stung from the same hole twice. Men used your innocence before to get power and dump you. Please be sensible today. Some other men still want to use you to get power and surely they will dump you again. You don’t share the same philosophy at all. Even though as I explained later, your obsession and philosophy of fighting corruption is not the priority of Nigeria today. What Nigeria needs utmost now is peace and stability. This can only be achieved when the religious ethnic and regional divide is tamed. And you can only tame it with people without much precedence. People without much following. Yet people that are constructive and have the ability to control men. If Sardauna today is alive in your situation he will never contest for the presidential seat because of his deep understanding of what the nation needs. He will step down for a more acceptable younger person. It’s on record that Sardauna even at the age of under 60 said he was not going to contest again preparing his only house in Rabah for retirement. I’ll give you a similitude to buttress my point of priority. A person seriously injured and fractured from a road traffic accident when brought to the emergency room, the first priority of the doctors is to secure an intravenous line. Meaning get a drip set working into his veins to protect his vital organs like the heart and kidneys from the effects of shock and loss of blood. The fractures even though serious and the source of the blood loss may take days and weeks before they are even attended to beside the superficial dressings. Nigeria now needs peace and stability first. Then we talk of good governance later even though it’s the source of the predicament we are facing. The present government has already charged the situation and played the religious divide to it’s advantage. It’s in circulation now, a SW pastor calling on Christians and the church to vote Jonathan as their only Savior. This religious card will be used to cover for his deficiency in governance. Your Excellency, you should understand too, that many if not most of your supporters are also looking up to you to protect them from the onslaught on their religion and region. This also the Christian will never believe the otherwise. Therefore the stage is set for religious confrontation which is the least the nation needs. What we need as a priority is peace and stability. From my view if APC can support as an example Ameachi or Okorocha/Kwankwaso or Elrufai or tambuwwal ticket and the PDC will have Ukpabio/Muazu or Ribadu or Shekaru, the next four years will. – insha Allah – witness stability both in the north and south. And the electoral body will get the necessary infrastructure that subsequently the next election will be free and fair and the true reflection of Nigerians. If you may ask, why can’t this same peace be achieved with you and another Christian running mate? Gen. you have antagonist, and they are many and also as ardent as your supporters. Your supporters have the biggest proportion of the underprivileged of the society which is the petrol that can be easily ignited by the slightest spark. The spark will be when you’re declared the loser. And you know you can very well lose if the Christians follow their church -and why not in this era of mediocrity. On the other hand if Jonathan comes back. BH will be real not the political one we see. The turmoil will engulf the whole country not only the north. That is why I also call on PDP to present some other candidates. My Brother in Islam, please listen to the words of wisdom. And don’t follow the whims of the riff raff. Before they used you the first time to disrupt the second republic, my father advised you against it. Today I am also advising you against contesting in the 2015 presidential elections because you will be used to ignite the nation -a dream well orchestered several years ago- and also be used by bad people as a ladder to grab regional and local powers. I rest my case here. My best regards and condolence to your recent loss. May Allah guide you and protect you from the evil men and the jinn. Amin. Ahmad Abubakar Mahmud Gumi Kaduna,
The 28th edition of the National Festival of Arts and Culture tagged NAFEST 2014 began today in Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi state. The one week cultural fiesta, which has its root from 1977 celebrated Festival of Art and Culture, tagged FESTAC, in Lagos, is attracting cultural troops from 36 states of Nigeria and the nation’s federal capital, Abuja. This year’s edition of the annual cultural show is themed: “Celebrating Nigeria at 100: the Role of Culture as a Vehicle for National Unity.” Declaring the festival open today on behalf of President Goodluck Jonathan, Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo described the Festival as a reflection of Nigeria’s unity in diversity where all states in the federation display their rich cultural heritage. According to him, the event is a platform for building bridges that can enhance the inter-cultural and cross ethnic friendships. Namadi Sambo noted that festival is meant to showcase Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage, enhance intra and inter cultural linkages, even as it also serves as a knowledge and reference point for the promotion of the historical and cultural experience of black people worldwide. According to him, there exists a nexus between arts and culture and the economic growth and technological advancement of any nation, adding that the economic direction of the festival lies in the great investment potentials and attraction that it held out for the country. “The sector avails our nation the economic development option with high capacity for economic empowerment, employment opportunities for our citizens, wealth creation as well as good returns on investment. It also habours the potential of making Nigeria a number one tourist attraction globally.” In his remarks, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation, Chief Edem Duke said that culture is our common wealth and that it is important for us to cherish it. He said that culture is a stimulus to national cohesion and development. The minister commended the nation’s traditional rulers for upholding the cultural values which serve to reinforce the nation’s unity. “Though tribe and tongue may differ, in brotherhood we stand” he stressed even as he thanked President Jonathan for funding the movie industry in Nigeria. He appealed to the president to extend such magnanimity to other players in the entertainment industry, including the Musicians, comedians and entertainers amongst other. The high point of the event was the march pass by contingents of participating states.
The perplexing truce reached between the Jonathan administration and the Boko Haram insurgents highlights challenges that Abuja can’t afford to down-play. With the whole thing appearing like it is unraveling, people are asking whether anyone was right to have given any weight to the ceasefire in the first instance. I have argued with the deaf on this page on the need for dialogue as the way of resolving the crisis of security in the North East. Government initially wasn’t interested. In a country saddled with insurgency, security guards are still being used by the ruling party to signal their clout and importance. No politician is considered as important without a gunman behind him. Where did this policy earthquake come from? To what effect? There are many who think of the truce as being weird. Judging by the international standard of behavior of nations; no government would sign a truce with insurgents. The norm, as they argue, is that you either quell them or force them into surrender. The ones we are dealing with are challenging the corporate state by laying a claim to territory. As a terrorist organization, as defined by the Security Council in addition to a host of other nations, the Boko Haram, according to this line of argument lacks a legal status on which to sign a truce with the Nigerian State; that the Nigerian government would be legitimizing them by signing such agreement. Has Nigeria conceded the territory they have seized? Questions have arisen from several quarters in Nigeria and abroad since the agreement was reached: what did the government and the Boko Haram agreed upon? Who and who sat on opposite sides of the table? Who signed for whom? Where is the document? A truce by definition is the cessation of hostilities for a period of time. For how long is this one intended to last? What constitutes a breach under the terms of the agreement? As it is, barely 24 hours after the so-called agreement, Boko Haram have had a very successful run over five Borno villages, killing eighteen persons and taking yet more territory. Does this violate the truce or not? Thirdly, government, as argued by many, should speak to citizens and the world about, not only the nature of the agreement but the guarantees that would ensure compliance by both parties. Were there witnesses to the agreement? Who were these? We know, for instance there are a lot of stakeholders in this war. Did they call the ECOWAS, the African Union and the United Nations, all of which are interested parties? There are, in addition, several foreign countries that have committed men and resources to the war. You have the United States, United Kingdom, France and Israel for instance that have supported Nigeria with intelligence and weaponry. How much of this truce do they know? Inside the Nigerian government, we have a Minister of Defence. He has not said anything about the truce. His silence is deafening. We have Ministers of Internal Affairs and Information. None of these has uttered a word. All you have so far are non-cabinet members – a Principal Secretary to the President, the Chief of Defence Staff and the head of the propaganda arm of government, the National Orientation Agency going up and down speaking on the truce. Where do these men stand in any serious government? In addition to these, we have the National Security Adviser, with vast powers under the Constitution. He has been abroad trying to a sell a package for soft approach. How does that dovetail to the truce? Did he participate in the negotiation? Did anyone remember to call in the National Assembly? The Media? Yet another question is about the status of the emergency rule in three states, which is in place very much against the wishes of the ordinary people resident in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa. Are you lifting it to ease its hardship on the people? How about the USD1Billion government has collected as loan, with the specific purpose of fighting the insurgency? What happens to the money? Gone with the wind? And then, what follows after the truce? What are the social interventions they are planning in the area? Now, five years down the road, government suddenly comes to terms with the fact that the hard approach isn’t working. Why didn’t it work? Who is accountable for this? What guarantee is there that the soft approach will work? Questions, questions and questions. As the 2015 elections come close with arrows flying, sharper and faster and the PDP facing flak for running an ineffective government, what are they going to tell Nigerians to dispel widespread assumptions that the truce is a ploy to give Dr. Jonathan a breather and lift his profile? This is a government after all that had squarely placed the blame for the insurgency on Northern conspiracy, an idiotic logic that flies on the face of the fact that Northerners – Christians and Muslims are the principal victims of this senseless violence. Is this whole thing electoral politics?

President Goodluck Jonathan has described the life of Delta state governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan as epitomizing triumph against all odds from the point of view of the circumstance of his birth.
He said that Uduaghan’s life also symbolizes what he called ‘the assured reward for single-minded commitment to the ideals of diligence, humility, perseverance, focus and dedicated service.’ The President made these remarks today in a letter to the governor, congratulating him as he marks his 60th birthday tomorrow, October 22 in Asaba, capital of Delta state. Manchester City continue their search for a first Champions League win this season when they face CSKA Moscow today, Tuesday, even as Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain will be in action elsewhere.
Here are all the fixtures in Groups E for today, Tuesday:
Group E
CSKA MOSCOW V MANCHESTER CITY (1600 GMT)
After taking just one point from their opening two matches, Premier League champions City go to Russia to face CSKA still looking for their first win. Manuel Pellegrini’s men are fresh from a 4-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend thanks to four Sergio Aguero goals, although a thigh injury suffered by Frank Lampard in that game means he is set to miss the trip.
The in-form Aguero also scored twice when City won 2-1 against the same opponents at the Arena Khimki in last season’s competition, although that match was overshadowed by racist taunts from home supporters aimed at City’s Yaya Toure. More misbehaviour from CSKA fans in their defeat at Roma last month saw them punished by UEFA and this game will be played behind closed doors as a result, something that is likely to work against the home side, who beat Kuban Krasnodar 6-0 in the Russian Premier League on Saturday.
ROMA V BAYERN MUNICH (1845 GMT)
The match at the Stadio Olimpico has the makings of being the standout fixture on Tuesday evening. Pep Guardiola takes his Bayern side to the stadium where he led Barcelona to victory in the Champions League final in 2009, and the German champions will be looking to extend their unbeaten start to the season. They have won both games in Group E so far and have gone eight matches without conceding a goal in all competitions.
Bayern defender Mehdi Benatia could come up against the club he left in the summer, and Roma have enjoyed a superb start to the campaign since selling the Moroccan. The Giallorossi have taken four points from a possible six so far and drew 1-1 at Manchester City in their last outing. Domestically, a 3-0 win over Chievo on Saturday was their sixth in seven matches in Serie A. [myad]
