National Environmental Standards Set To Punish Erring Companies

Dr. Ngeri Benebo
Dr. Ngeri Benebo

Director General of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), Dr. Ngeri Benebo has vowed to implement sanctions against erring companies in the areas of environmental degradation. This will be done, she warned, through the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policy as part of efforts of the government to create healthy and sustainable environment.
Dr. Benebo who spoke to newsmen in Abuja said that this is part of the efforts to ensure that companies cooperate and keep to the end of their bargain of acquiring their end products from the consumer.
According to her, firms will henceforth be made to pay fines or face court sanctions.
The EPR programme was set up to ensure that companies buy back the end products from their users to ensure the sanitisation of the environment. A procedure that is tuned towards ‘the polluter pays’ principle.
The EPR policy is characterized by: the shifting of responsibility (physically and/or economically; fully or partially) upstream toward the producer and away from municipalities and the provision of incentives to producers to take into account, environmental considerations when designing their products.
Dr: Benebo said that all companies with products that have end products have been asked to set up collection centre where they can buy back their end products.
According to her, government has given the companies enough time to set up collection mechanisms as well as infrastructure that will take off some of the burden of cleaning up as government cannot do all alone.
“There are sanctions in place but we have not started applying it. We are giving them till next year to put everything in place. But before the end of this year, you must have your producer responsibility organization. There are people that they can contract to do it for them, that is their umbrella name.
“So you can decide to do it on your own or a group of you can decide to do it, but you must have an outfit, either directly from your facility or external to your facility to carry out this activity for you. We are looking at January next year to kick off the sanctions.”
Dr. Benebo said that discussions with companies have been going on for a while now, adding “they are doing some corporate social responsibility here and there, but they are not doing the buy back of their products, because that is what gives a toll on our sanitation in the country.
“Because you take your yoghurt you throw the pack away; you take your coke you throw the pet bottle away: bournvita, the Can is thrown somewhere.
“Government is now saying that enough is enough; let people be responsible for the end results of their products. It is a part of polluter pays principle and that is what is done globally.”

Jonathan Wants Human Rights Concerns Addressed In Fight Against Boko Haram

Jonathan in MilitaryPresident Goodluck Jonathan has given a marching order to military and civilian segments of Nigeria to reach a collective resolve towards addressing Human Rights concerns associated with internal security operations in Nigeria.
“We have taken very seriously, reports from some international organizations about perceived human rights abuses by our security forces during military operations. Findings, have generally shown that these reports are, in the main, exaggerated.
“However, we will do everything in our powers to ensure that the rights of our citizens as enshrined in our constitution are respected. We want to appeal to the human rights community for broader cooperation, and deeper understanding of the circumstances that we face and for greater appreciation of the efforts put in place for improved civil-military relationship.”
President Jonathan spoke today when he declared open, one-day
International Workshop on Civil-Military Cooperation and Observance of Human Rights in Internal Security Operations, held in Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory.
Jonathan noted that the  workshop would serve as a veritable platform for the Nigerian Armed Forces and relevant security agencies, to key into current international best practices, in the conduct of successful counter terrorism operations, and other emergent military operations.
The Workshop, he added, would further facilitate the development of a doctrine that will bring the Nigerian Armed Forces, other security agencies and the civilian population even closer, in all internal security operations.
“I am glad to note that in addition to the Security Sector, we are joined today, by members of the Judiciary, Academia, representatives of governments, International Development Partners, the Media, Civil Society Organizations, as well as other critical stake holders.”
President Jonathan pledged his commitment to continue to investigate and bring to a just and fair closure, any suspected or reported case of human rights abuse.
He further affirmed the commitment of his administration towards supporting the nation’s security agencies, in their daily task of protecting the people at this most difficult time.
“We will continue to provide the best of training and acquire appropriate equipment to enable them defend our nation and all members of humanity in our country.”

Medical Doctor Wins European Top Human Rights Prize

Congo doctor

A 59-year-old gynaecologist, Denis Mukwege from the Democratic Republic of Congo has won Europe’s top human rights prize for helping thousands of gang rape victims in the country. He was announced the winner of the Sakharov prize by the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

Mukwege will collect the 50,000 euros (£39,400; $63,600) prize next month even as he has already said that the prize would make rape survivors in DR Congo “feel they are not alone.”

He set up the Panzi hospital in eastern DR Congo in 1999 to treat women subjected to horrific sexual violence.

He said the prize was in recognition of the more than 30,000 rape survivors treated at the hospital in the eastern city of Bukavu over the last 16 years, adding: “it was wonderful to see the world stand up and take care of them.”

Women in eastern DR Congo continued to be raped in front of their husbands and children to “dehumanise” them and “destroy” families, he said.

“Today, we are treating 10 cases per day and this is horrible,” Mukwege told the BBC.

Ukraine protest group Euromaidan and Azerbaijani activist Leyla Yunus came second and third respectively.

Two years ago, Mukwege survived an assassination attempt after condemning the continued use of sexual violence in DR Congo by forces fighting to control the country’s vast mineral wealth.

The Sakharov prize – named after famous Soviet scientist and dissident Andrei Sakharov – is awarded each year for the promotion of human rights and democracy around the world.

Last year, it was awarded to Pakistani child education activist Malala Yousafzai.

Previous winners of the prestigious prize included Nelson Mandela and Aung San Suu Kyi. [myad]

Presidency: PDP Gives Jonathan Up To October 30 To Make His Position Known

Adamu-Muazu

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has finally given President Goodluck Jonathan up to the end of October to make his position known as to whether he would run for the 2015 Presidential election for a second term in office or not.

The President has consistently been dodging several requests being made on him across the country to formally declare his intention to run for the Presidency in the 2015 election.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh spoke to newsmen today at the Wada House national headquarters of the party, making it very clear that the October 30 closing date for the sale of expression of interest and nomination forms will not be extended by a minute.

Metuh, who insisted that other aspirants vying for various elective positions should similarly hasten to beat the deadline, stressed that by 6.00pm on October 30, the party would close its door to such aspirants, from the position of President downward.

“The NWC today decided that the issue of the closing date for the collection of the nomination forms cannot be extended. It will not be extended, 6:PM, 30th of October, no party member can obtain forms for our congress and convention 2014 after the deadline, the last date is 30th of October and it will not be extended.” [myad]

Rain Storm Sacks Edo Residents

Rain storm havoc

A 20 minutes rainstorm that fell in parts of Benin City, Edo State capital, yesterday has rendered many people homeless.Roofs of over 50 houses were blown off in many parts of the state capital, including Ekewan, Agbonma, Agho and Evbuotubu.

Some people escaped death when the rainstorm pulled down a gigantic billboard located along Ekewan road. The billboard destroyed part of the perimeter fence housing the Rosicrucian Order.

An eye witness, Henry Omoregie, whose workshop is behind the billboard said they were lucky that the billboard did not fall towards his workshop.

“When the rain started, we were hiding here. Some persons were in a big bus. Suddenly we saw the billboard shaking. I quickly took my car away. We were lucky it fell on the fence.”

Irene Ero, a worker at the Rosicrucian Order, said a strong wind accompanied the rain. [myad]

Nigeria’s Super Falcons Over-Run South Africa’s Bayana-Bayana

Super-Falcons-600x336

Nigeria female heroes, the Super Falcons over-ran the South African Bayana Bayana by 2-1 in the first semifinal of the Africa Women’s Championship, staged at Sam Nujoma stadium today. The Falcons have thus cruised into final and book a ticket for the upcoming 2015 Fifa Women’s World Cup in Canada.

The South African team was on the back foot as early as kick off time just as keeper Thokozile Mndaweni was kept on her toes by Francisca Ordega.

Portia Modise could have opened the scoring through a free kick in the 23rd minute but her strike went wide.

However, it was Asisat Oshoala courtesy of a deflected finish that came off Janine Van Wyk to break the deadlock in the 38th minute.

That was followed by a reckless challenge on Desire Oparamozie by Van Wyk who was cautioned before Oshoala completed her brace at the stroke of halftime.

Bayana came back strong after restart in a bid to turn around their fortunes as Modise was flagged offside seven minutes into the second half.

With Falcons keeping up with their opponents resurgence, Esther Sunday was brought into fray in place of Ordega.

That did not deter Vera Pauw troops as Refiloe Jane pulled one back in the 67th minute with question marks if the goal did cross the line.

They continue to dominate the game but the former champions countered through Oshoala who failed to get support upfront as the clock wound down with less than minutes to time.

Sunday’s shot in the 88th minute was not enough to ensure she inked her name in the score sheet but the the most successful women’s side managed to hold to contest for a record seventh title. [myad]
