President Goodluck Jonathan personally visited members of the Nigerian national under-20 women’s football team, the Falconets with a tall order that they should beat their German counterparts in tomorrow’s final of the 2014 FIFA under-20 women’s World Cup in Canada. The President promised them in return, a hero’s welcome and presidential treatment when they return to Nigeria after the tournament. President Jonathan who is currently on a private visit to Germany was personaly at the Falconets’ base in Montreal at about 3.15pm Nigerian time today and spoke with the captain of the team, Patience Okaeme; top scorer, Asisat Oshoala; Assistant Captain, Deborah Okoye; Courtney Dike, Uchechi Sunday, the delegation leader, Chief Felix Anyansi Agwu, Head Coach Peter Dedevbo and other members of his team. For about two months now, resident doctors have stayed out of government hospitals, protesting the alleged nonchalant attitude of the government to their demands. The doctors, trained primarily to save life, have decided to continue with their strike action even when a deadly case such as Ebola, which by all intent and purposes, is an emergency case came calling. It is instructive to know that even in the civil service rule, which all medical officers, including the doctors signed, they pledge to take the protection of peopl’s lives as the first in the priorities over and above their personal interests. To the extent that it is mandatory for doctors to save the lives of even their known enemies: including a person who is confirmed to have killed their wives or mothers. No one would deny the fact that doctors have genuine reasons to go on strike by avoinding hospitals, but it beats one imagination what each of them is thinking during this time when Ebola disease is making headlines all over the world and their counterparts elsewhere are running around to find ways of controlling its spread. The saddest part of it is that, as minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu said on Wednesday, while they have not been in their duty posts to attend to poor and innocent Nigerians, most of who are dying unnaturally, they are still collecting their monthly salaries. And most of them have fully take solace in their private hospital or clinic where they charge cut-throat medical bills for the same poor innocent Nigerians, away from the humanitarian services they are supposed to be rendering in the government hospitals and medical centres. We in Greenbarge Reporters find it hard to believe that any doctor, much more, 16,500 of them in Nigeria, would throw the tenet of the profession into the dustbin in glorification of worldly thing. It beats our imagination how they would, simply as a result of their grudge against the government, allow Nigerians, from whose sweat revenue is generated to pay their salaries, to suffer all forms of diseases, known and unknown with nowhere to turn to for succour except their private, forbidden private hospitals and clinics. Our heart is gladdened this morning to know that, amidst the madness which the resident doctors have enmeshed themselves in, Nigeria’s premier university, the University of Ibadan (UI) is planning to develop a vaccine for the Ebola Vírus Disease (EVD). This cheering news was broken yesterday by UI Vice Chancellor, Professor Isaac Adewole, while speaking at a Town Hall Discourse on Ebola at the Trenchard Hall of the institution. We are appealing to the striking doctors and their conscience to jettison the present blind pursuit of selves by returning to work and joining the University of Ibadan, the government, kindhearted philanthropists, other institutions and individual to arrest the spread of the disease. They should help, like their counterparts around the world, in finding urgent and collective solution towards controlling Ebola that is threatening all of us. That would be one of the best ways of gaining the sympathy of humanity and God’s pleasure, besides fulfilling professional calling. Anything short of this, to, us, is selfish, unGodly and a reflection of the antics of devil incarnate. [myad]
I was privileged to be in the press corp of General Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign train in the 2003 electioneering campaign, representing Daily Trust, an Abuja newspaper organization. The campaign took us day and night and across the length and breadth of this country. When he concluded the campaign a few hours to the election, he took us to his Daura country home to fete us. In the process of interaction freely, the General thanked us and asked a casual question: what is your individual opinion about the campaign, and your guess as to the outcome of the Presidential election being expected to be conducted in a couple of days away? While every other persons rated the campaign 100 percent successful and swore that he would win the election and become the next President, I was about the only one who, after agreeing that the campaign was excellence, went on to say that, “yes, your Excellency, you will win the election, no doubt, but ‘they’ will not give it to you.” General Buhari and others around were momentarily surprised at my suggestion. They went pensive, but slowly came to terms with the fact that I could be right, though no one had the courage to ask me to elaborate.
Unless General Buhari wants to just ‘join’ them as he cannot ‘beat’ them, certainly, there is no way the forces working against him; the forces which ironically are the core engines that hold this country down, will open their eyes and allow him to mount the Presidency even if all the other forces, which are in majority but powerless, vote for him 100 percent.
Of course, the reasons I had that time are still very relevant today, and unless General Buhari wants to just ‘join’ them as he cannot ‘beat’ them, certainly, there is no way the forces working against him; the forces which ironically are the core engines that hold this country down, will open their eyes and allow him to mount the Presidency even if all the other forces, which are in majority but powerless, vote for him 100 percent. From this point, it is instructive to recall that when Goodluck Jonathan won the 2011 Presidential election and shortly after, went to Lagos to address members of the business community, Jonathan thanked the tycoons for standing by him through the election time. They quickly made it clear to him that they should be the one to thank him for making himself available against Buhari who loomed large in the horizon. The businessmen and industrialists told Jonathan that if he had not made himself available for them to be catapulted to the Presidency, most of them would either have left the country into exile or preparing to do so. Of course, the import of the message was that General Buhari’s Presidency would have been a call for disaster to their investments, whose foundation and existence was mainly rooted in shady and corrupt ways. This group of Nigerians, who constitute a tiny negligible percentage of the country are the ones that control the nation’s common wealth and would do everything they can to push whoever would challenge Buhari forward, just so that, even though he wins, that he is not allowed to become President. Another group of powerful Nigerians who depend mainly on the spoil of office and dole outs from the executives and legislatures for the oiling of their systems are the traditional rulers. To them, Buhari’s Presidency is most likely to shut the door on the free quantum of money flowing from the political system and are not comfortable with such situation. When the traditional rulers across the country began to confer titles on President Jonathan before the 2011 election, it became obvious that they were direcly initiating him, whereas no one ever heard of a single traditional title conferred on Buhari. Those who are schooled in such titles and the mode of conferring them by most of the traditional rulers would tell you that there is more to it than what ordinary eyes see. In order words, General Buhari may be ‘allowed’ to enjoy the benfit of popular votes for him to be President only if he would bend his head for local traditional rulers to recite strange incantations, using all kinds of strange and wired fetish objects to anoint him in the name of conferring traditional titles. In one word, if he would allow himself to be initiated into cults and societies! And, above all, America which has pride itself as the police of the world and its allies are determined, hypocritically, not to allow any clean person to mount the leadership of this country. They have shown clearly that rapid development of Nigeria, devoid of corruption, crises, diseases and other vices, are great threat to their strength and the power they weild. If you are in doubt, take a look at what Libya, Iraq and Palestine have been turned into. Look at what they had tried to turn Iran into if it were not the foresight of that country’s leadership. In other words, the neo-colonialism is taking a strong root in Nigeria fast. It is being implemented, as it was done in Libya and Iraq, using the ignorant and willing citizens of the host country. America and its allies are enforcing the content of the neo-colonialism on Nigeria so cleverly that the ordinary onlookers would be in a haste to commend them for their kindness. In a situation as we have found ourselves, where many negative forces connive to deny this country the leadership of General Buhari and a few of his likes, what else can those who want such leadership do other than to pray.[myad]
It is a common truism that no legacy is more potent in human society than that of education, and of course, acquisition of Knowledge. Even knowledge has its own grades, and the highest of it is knowledge of history, for, the future most times, derives its ingredient on the past. Indeed, the history of an accomplished personality as it evolves and generously documented, has the capacity of shaping the future of the people in the society: talk of people like Chief Herbert Macaulay, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the great Sardauna of Sokoto; Chief Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and several others. It follows that a society may progress or retrogress depending on the uprighhtness or otherwise of the forebears, as may have been recorded in history. Conversely, unrecorded socio-economic and politico-cultural gladiators has the capacity of throwing the society into the darkness of its past. It is within the context of the necessity to continually update the content of the history and the component of it that a budding author and practicing Journalist, Abdullahi M. Gulloma cornered the immediate past Head of Nigeria Civil Service, Ahaji Bukar Goni Aji for a detail treatise on his life and time as, obviously, an acknowledged accomplished civil servant of long standing. The book, titled: BUKAR GONI AJI, A QUINTESSENTIAL CIVIL SERVANT came out to throw light on the history of this first-class civil servant. The book elicits knowledge for the benefit of the future generations and set, in the main, to play relevant role in the advancement of the future generations, within the confine of Civil Service. In the foreword to the book, a biography, President Goodluck Jonathan says: “for me in particular, the story of Aji’s life of humility, hard work and dedication makes interesting reading” even as he recommended it to researchers, scholars and students of public service and history as well as general public. The 447-page book is divided into two parts. Part one of 12 chapter, deals essentially with his entire life, from birth upto the time he retired as Head of the Civil Service of the Federation a couple of months ago. The Part ends with several inspiring speeches of the subject and press statements and releases from his office, most of which were signed by the Director of Communications in his office, Dr. Tope Ajakaiye. Part two of the book which begins from page 283 and ends in page 447 are cuttings of newspapers, magazines, radio, television and online media publications on the activities of Bukar Goni Aji all through his tenure. The book is enriched with each chapter beginning with a quote from great philosopher and legend of the history, as, for example, the quote on page 39, from former Ford Motors Chief Executive, Lee Laccaco who said: “Get all the education you can, but then, by God, do something! Don’t just stand there, make something happen. It isn’t easy, but if you keep your nose to the grindstone and work at it, it’s amazing how in a free society you can become as great as you want to be. And, of course, also be grateful for whatever blessings God bestows on you.” Another interesting part of the book is in chapter ten, from page 123 to 164 where Goni Aji’s inspiring words, quoted from his different speeches are reflected. The chapter is titled: “Nuggets Of Mind.” One of such quotes goes thus: “As civil servants, we shall re-dedicate our commitment to the government and Nigerian people, thereby strengthening the bond of trust between government and the citizenry through the exhibition of high sense of honesty, transparency, accountability, moral and ethical behaviour.” Having said that, it is noted however, one or a few defect are discernable in the book. For instance, some captions on the photographs are incomplete. The caption on the picture in page 65 “He doesn’t joke with his holidays” is vague. So also is the caption on the two pictures in page 66: one saying “Refreshing his mind abroad.” Where in abroad? Readers would be eager to know and the second picture with caption “With his first daughter, Fatimah” born which year? Readers would also be interested in knowing. Though the knowledge that Goni Aji was loved by media and that his words were adequately captured in such media of communications was refreshing, but the fact remains that the media reflection of him in the book is over-bloated. Devoting 161 pages in the book to treat just the media portrait of Goni Aji almost robbed it of the beauty in narration and making it boring. The press releases and statements from his office, signed mostly by the media aide, should not have been featured or even given prominence in a book that is supposed to solely focus on the subject matter. However, in all, the book is a great effort in the direction of documenting a great, accomplished and outstanding civil servant of our time for the benefit of the generations yet unborn. Like President Jonathan says in the foreword to the book, researchers, scholars and students of public service, history, politics as well as the general public will find this book most valuable; in the acquisition of useful modern knowledge in that direction. A letter personally written by the Doctor Stella Adadevoh, who died a few days ago of Ebola Disease has revealed how she was under pressure to release the Liberian American doctore, Dr. Patrick Sawyer who was rushed to the First Consultants Hospital, Obalende, Lagos on arrival at the Lagos airport. The said letter which she addressed to the Federal and Lagos State governments reads: “In the interest of our patients, staff, the general public the nation at large we state the following: A 40-years old gentlemen came into the hospital with symptoms suggestive of Malaria (Fever, headache, extreme weakness) on Sunday night (20th July 2014). He was fully conscious and gave us his clinical history and told us he is a Senior Diplomat from Liberia. Laboratory investigations confirmed malaria whilst other test for HIV, Hepatitis B&C were negative. He was admitted and treatment commenced. However, due to the fact that he was not responding to treatment but rather was developing haemorrhagic symptoms we further questioned him. He denied having been in contact with any persons with EVD (Ebola Virus Disease) at home, in any hospital or at any burial. In spite of this denial we immediately decided to do the following: 1. To conduct further tests for possible Infectious Haemorrhagic Disease, especially EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE, based on the fact that he was a Liberian citizen and the recent ourbreak of EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE in that country 2. We immediately isolated/quarantined the patient, commenced barrier nursing and simultaneously contacted the Lagos State Ministry of Health and the Federal Ministry of Health to enquire where furthe laboratory tests could be performed as we had a high index of suspicion of possible EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE 3. WE REFUSED FOR HIM TO BE LET OUT OF THE HOSPITAL IN SPITE OF INTENSE PRESSURE, AS WE WERE TOLD THAT HE WAS A SENIOR ECOWAS OFFICIAL AND HAD AN IMPORTANT ROLE TO PLAY AT THE ECOWAS CONVENTION IN CALABAR, CROSS RIVER STATE. 4. The initial test results from LUTH laboratory indicated a signal of possible EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE, but required confirmation. 5. We then took the further step of reaching out to Senior Officials in the office of the Secretary of Health of the United States of America who promptly assisted us with contacts at thecentres for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization Regional Laboratory Centre in Senegal. 6. Working jointly with the State, Federal Agencies and International Agencies, we were able to obtain confirmation of EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE (ZAIRE STRAIN), (W.H.O. Regional Center Lab-Senegal/Redeemes lab/LUTH Laboratory) 7. The gentleman subsequently died on Friday at a 6.50 (25th July, 2014) 8. All agencies were promptly notified and in consultation with W.H.O, Regional EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE Centre in Conakry, Guinea and Best Practices, the following was commenced: a. Orderly temporay shut down of the hospital with immediate evacuation of in house patients b. The appropriate professional removal of the body and its incineration wunder W.H.O. guidelines witnessed by all appropriate agencies. 9. Having concluded the above, it is now appropriate to give this Press release in the interest of our partient, staff, the general public and the nation at large.
10. In keeping with W.H.O, guidelines, hospitals is shut down briefly as full decontamination exercise is currently in progress W.H.O. Guidelines In conclusion working with the STATE, FEDERAL AND INTERNATIONAL AGENCUES, we were able to identify and confirm the diagnosis of the EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE. We hope that by our action of preventing this gentleman from being extracted from our hospital and traveling to Calabar we have been able to prevent the spread of EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE in Nigeria.
