Redefining Opposition Politics: A Case Of Ekiti State Governorship Election, By Emeka Umeagbalasi

Emeka

On Saturday, June 21st 2014, the 732,106 registered voters in Ekiti State, Southwest Nigeria, comprising 371, 419 females and 360, 747 males, were asked to go to the State’s 2,195 polling units and 177 electoral wards to choose the next governor of their beloved State. This is on account of the expiring controversial court restored electoral mandate of the incumbent governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), who leaves office around October 2014, having started governing the State in October 2010. In announcing the poll’s results on Sunday, June 22nd 2014, the Independent National Electoral Commission’s chief returning officer and vice chancellor of the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti, Prof Isaac Asuzu, declared Mr. Peter Fayose of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winner with 203, 090 votes, as against the incumbent governor’s 120, 433 votes. A total of 348, 656 valid voters voted in the poll out of the total registered voters of 732, 106. Mr. Peter Fayose also scored the constitutionally required majority votes in the entire 16 LGAs in the State.

Other two important staggered governorship polls in Nigeria had earlier taken place in another Southwest State of Ondo and Southeast State of Anambra. In that of Ondo State, held on 20th October 2012, the incumbent governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko of the Labour Party, scored 260, 199 votes to beat his two main rivals: Barr. Olusola Oke of the PDP, who got 155,961 votes and Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN of the APC, who scored 143, 512 votes. In the said poll, out of 1, 638, 950 registered voters, a total of 624, 659 voted, out of which, 30, 145 votes were invalid and 594, 244 were valid votes. Governor Mimiko also secured the constitutionally required majority votes in 13, out of 19 LGAs in the State. He became governor on account of court restoration of his electoral mandate in early 2009. He was first sworn in on 24th February 2009.

In the case of Anambra State, its staggered governorship poll took place on 16th and 30th November, 2013. At the end, Mr. Willie Obiano of the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) was declared winner by the INEC’s chief returning officer and vice chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof Epoke, with 180, 178 votes. Mr. Tony Nwoye of the PDP came second with 97, 700 votes and Dr. Chris Ngige of the APC came third with 95, 963 votes. The poll was conducted in 4,608 polling units and 326 electoral wards. Out of the total registered voters of 1, 776, 167, a total of 442, 242 people voted, out of which 16, 988 were declared invalid votes and 425, 254 were valid votes. Governor Obiano also secured the constitutionally required 25% votes in 19 LGAs and won majority votes in 16 out of the 21 LGAs in the State. Anambra State, courtesy of former governor Peter Gregory Obi was the first State in Nigeria to earn judicial restoration of its stolen electoral mandate in March 2006 per Enugu Division of the Court of Appeal.

Restoration Of Sanctity Of The Ballot Box: With the successful conduct of the three staggered State governorship polls under reference, sanctity of the ballot box is gradually being restored on Nigerian electoral polity. The outcome of the Ekiti State governorship poll has, again, shown that elections are not won on the pages of newspaper or by enormity of media propaganda or noise-making. It also shows that the era of elitist politics is steadily fading in Nigeria. Such popular outcomes witnessed in the Ekiti State governorship poll had earlier taken place in Ondo in October 2012 and Anambra in November 2013. The great people of Ekiti State like their Ondo and Anambra counterparts have adamantly refused to be contaminated by the propaganda virus of the Africa’s noisiest opposition political party in Nigeria. This is the most striking thing about the giant strides at restoring sanctity of the ballot box on the country’s electoral polity. When the voice of the majority spoke in Ondo in October 2012, the Africa’s noisiest opposition political party called it “armada of electoral rigging”.

When they spoke again in Anambra in November 2013, they said it was a charade and continuously made negative reference to it both locally and internationally until few hours into the Ekiti poll, which it horribly lost out. Now that the same majority voice has spoken in Ekiti governorship poll of June 2014, Nigerians are waiting to hear another labeling to be hung on the neck of the popular poll’s outcome. When they lost in Ondo in October 2012, they relocated to the pages of newspaper and screens of politically oiled television stations and radios. When their propaganda refused to make public relevance, they filed papers in court and took over the functions of its proceedings on the pages of newspaper and visual/audio media, yet at the end, their arguments became “orbiter dictum” and woefully failed the litmus test of “ratio decidendi”. In Anambra, the riggers became the rigged and Anambra People became the winners.  They cried and ran to the court of first instance for “justice”, but the court in her hallowed wisdom, sent them packing.

Redefinition Of Opposition Politics In Nigeria: Nigeria parades one of the worst and noisiest opposition political parties on African Continent. Opposition political parties are universally best known as “the best government in waiting seeking to oust the worst government in power through the ballot box”. But in Nigeria, it is a clear case of “the worst government in waiting seeking to oust the worse government in power through political guerrilla warfare”. The fundamental aim of every credible opposition political party is to oust the lowest performed government in power through the ballot box powered by mass enfranchisement and ballot sanctification. But in Nigeria, opposition political parties fear ballot box a lot because they do not have better options of leadership to offer the electorates warranting voting them into office. Even where they are in control of State politics, they run deficit governance and government by propaganda leading to their abysmal performances during re-election bids. Any opposition political party that hinges its success on cross-carpeting and decampment is a party of gangsters and empty vessels with defeatist aim of political noisemaking and merchandise. We call for redefinition of opposition politics in Nigeria so as to bring it in tandem with the international best practices.

While we congratulate the great people of Ekiti State for courageously making their best electoral choice by electing Mr. Peter Ayodele Fayose and rejecting the outgoing governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, we renew our earlier call on the leaders of Civil Society organizations in the country, particularly those who said they are working for pro-democracy and pro-civil rights organizations to change the concept of engaging the electoral processes. Paying much attention to “poll monitoring” and less attention to pre-poll advocacy activities is a defeatist and archaic concept. We understand that much energy is dissipated on poll monitoring on account of its huge foreign currency inflows, but CSO advocacy activities should be taken beyond the boundaries of concept of “business enterprise” and rooted in “service to humanity”. This is what is behind the invention of “NGO” in 1839 with the formation of “Anti Slavery International” as the world’s first NGO.

We also call on those funding “poll monitoring” advocacy activities of the pro-democracy and pro-civil rights organizations both at local and international levels to pay more attention to pre-poll advocacy activities and channel more funds into them. Pre-poll advocacy activities are more publicly important than mere monitoring of polls. Issues of roguish voters’ register and mass disenfranchisement, quality of candidates and their fielding by political parties, poll campaign violence, internal party democracy or party primaries as well as candidates/parties’ manifestoes are not issues to be advocated upon on election day. They are purely pre-poll advocacy activities, considered the bedrock of every credible democratic process. Elections’ day situation rooms’ reports or analyses are less valuable than that under reference.

If It Were Not President Jonathan, Fayose Would Not Have Been PDP Candidate, Says Adamu Mu’azu

Adamu-Muazu
National chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu has confessed that if it were not President Goodluck Jonathan, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, who won the Saturday governorship election in Ekiti state would not have been the party’s candidate.
The PDP chairman who led members of his National Working Council (NWC) to congratulate President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa Abuja over the electoral victory in Ekiti state said that Fayose was chosen with the support of the President.
He explained that the party would not have fielded Fayose as it’s governorship candidate in Ekiti State if it had considered what he called “the Nigerian factor.
“Fayose, ordinarily, if the Nigerian factor comes in, will never have been our candidate, but you and I know that even after he emerged, the sort of groups that came to report to me that I have done the wrong choice.
“And more often, when they are caught red-handed coming to the Villa, Mr. President will insist that I must be there and I will say I have seen the same people. I have explained to them.
“Mr. President will still insist for me to hear, to listen. That at the end of the day, the truth will prevail.
“Because without getting our first 11, which is on very good support and encouragement, we would not have been celebrating today.”
Mu’azu said that the Ekiti State election was conducted in a free, fair and transparent manner and that the result was generally accepted by local and international observers as well as the opposition parties.
According to him, the Ekiti State electoral victory was a clear demonstration of Jonathan’s style of leadership.
This was even as President Jonathan directed the party leadership to work harder to ensure that the party takes over other states under the control of the opposition parties, especially All Progressives Congress (APC)
President Jonathan commended the leadership of the party for the victory in the Ekiti election, even as he asked them not to rest on their oars until they bring states like Lagos, Osun and others under the fold of the party.
“At least, we have seen clearly that Ekiti is now a PDP state. We pray that we will work very hard, sell our ideas, our programmes, manifesto to Nigerians so that they will accept us for what we are.
“We always say that we will not disappoint Nigerians. We believe that we will even do more in other states.
“Let me appreciate Nigerians for their determination and patriotism for this country and to reassure them that the PDP leadership will continue to do its best for this country.”
President Jonathan assured that PDP remains the only party in Nigeria which has not changed in orientation since its formation.
“We are not chameleons. We don’t change. No mutation in PDP. We don’t transform to all kinds of characters and colours and shapes based on circumstances. We are what we are and we will continue to preach what we believe in and do our best for this country.”
President Jonathan assured Nigerians that his administration will continue to find solutions to all the socio-economic challenges facing the country through the pursuit of the ongoing transformation of all sectors of nation’s economy, especially in the area of rail transport, agriculture and education.
He added that his administration is addressing the problem of insecurity being faced by the country even as he made it clear that insurgency would soon be a thing of the past. [myad]

Sultan To Politicians: We’re Not Competitors

Sultan (2)

Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III has made it clear to Nigerian politicians that traditional leaders are not their competitors or enemies.

He spoke today when he received in audience in his palace in Sokoto, the new Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi II.

The Sultan, who advised the new Emir of Kano to be fair, just with the fear of God emphasize that traditional leaders were not competing with politicians but are ready to support whoever occupies the position of leadership at a particular time.

“Politicians should listen to us. As Muslim leaders, we support whoever occupies a position whether that of a President, governor or Minister. So, there is need for synergy in order to move the country forward.

“We are partners in progress not competitors and we will not relent in giving the necessary advice to politicians because that is what is expected of us.” [myad]

United Nations Lament 650,000 Boko Haram Displaced Nigerians

UN High Comm Navi-Pillay

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has lamented that about 650,000 Nigerians have been displaced in many parts of the North through the activities of Boko Haram.

Representative of the body in Nigeria, Ms Angele Dikongue-Atangana, said in an interview today that an intelligence assessment carried out in May had blamed their displacement on the recent crises in the North-East.

“According to an intelligence assessment of North-Eastern Nigeria, at least 650,000 persons are displaced within the boundary of Nigeria. And what is of most concern to the UNHCR in Nigeria today are these internally displaced persons.”

She said that her organization is working hard at establishing a regional office in Gombe that would take care of many of the internally displaced persons, adding that the international community and the UN systems in Nigeria are working jointly in providing protection and care for the affected persons.

The representative also disclosed plans by UNHCR to ensure efficient coordination and management of camps for those affected.

“UNHCR will always support respective states in taking care of internally displaced persons.

“This is one reason we want to establish an office in Gombe, so as to be able cater for the needs of many displaced persons in this part of Nigeria.” [myad]

Nigeria-Bosnia Referee In Trouble For Celebrating Nigeria’s Victory

Referee Peter
Over 20,000 people are believed to have signed an online petition requesting for the removal of Peter O’Leary from the World Cup after a photo of him celebrating with Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama made its way online.
According to the Independent UK, the New Zealand referee drew widespread criticism after wrongly disallowing an Edin Dzeko strike after 21 minutes.
Emmanuel Emenike also appeared to “clip the heels” of Emir Spahic which went unnoticed by the referee.
As a result of all these, a Bosnian fan has sent the petition to FIFA, asking for O’Leary’s removal.
Dzeko who spoke to reporters describes the referee as “shameful. The referee happened. We are going home, we are sad because of that, but the referee should go home too, because he changed the result, he changed the game, and that’s why we lost.
“We tried to come back after the goal where there was obviously a foul on our captain and before when I scored a goal it was not offside. Nigeria played good as well, but the referee was shameful for this competition.” said the Manchester City striker. [myad]

U.S Professor Loses Associate Fellow Post For Querying Climate Change

Professor in US
An adjunct professor at American University in Washington, D.C,
Dr. Caleb Rossiter has been removed from his post as an Associate Fellow at the progressive Institute for Policy Studies. He was removed a few days after a newspaper published his opinion piece calling man-made global warming an “unproved science.”
Dr. Rossiter taught courses on climate statistics, and holds a Ph.D. in policy analysis and a master’s degree in mathematics.
In a Wall Street Journal article published on May 4, he urged an expansion of carbon-based energy in Africa.
“I started to suspect that the climate-change data were dubious a decade ago while teaching statistics,” he wrote.
“Computer models used by the U.N. Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to determine the cause of the six-tenths of one degree Fahrenheit rise in global temperatures from 1980 to 2000 could not statistically separate fossil-fueled and natural trends.
“The left wants to stop industrialization—even if the hypothesis of catastrophic man-made global warming is false.
“We are not rationing our electricity. Why should Africa?”
The respected academician concludes in the write-up that it would be “terrible to think that so many people in the West” would block carbon-based energy in Africa “in the name of unproved science.”
And on May 7, Dr. Rossiter received an email from the Institute for Policy Studies, which describes itself as “a community of public scholars and organizers linking peace, justice, and the environment” in the United States and globally.
It began: “Dear Caleb, We would like to inform you that we are terminating your position as an Associate Fellow. Unfortunately, we now feel that your views on key issues, including climate science, climate justice, and many aspects of U.S. policy to Africa, diverge so significantly from ours that a productive working relationship is untenable.”
In an exclusive interview with the Climate Depot website, Dr. Rossiter said: “If people ever say that fears of censorship from ‘climate change’ views are overblown, have them take a look at this: Just days after I published a piece in The Wall Street Journal calling for Africa to be allowed the ‘all of the above’ energy strategy we have in the U.S., the Institute for Policy Studies terminated my 23-year relationship with them.
“I have tried to get [IPS] to discuss and explain their rejection of my analysis,” he said. “When I countered a claim of ‘rapidly accelerating’ temperature change with the IPCC’s own data, showing the nearly 20-year temperature pause, the best response I ever got was ‘Caleb, I don’t have time for this.'”
On May 13, Dr. Rossiter wrote a blog on his own website headlined “The debate is finally over on ‘global warming’— because nobody will debate.
“My blood simply boils too hot when I read the blather, daily, about climate catastrophe.
“Obama has long been delusional on this issue, speaking of a coming catastrophe. But he really went off the chain in his State of the Union address this year: ‘For the sake of our children and our future.’ [myad]

China Demolishes 360 Christian Churches, Crosses

China PM
Officials in China’s Zhejiang province have launched what Christian activists call an “anti-church” campaign that has reportedly damaged or demolished about 360 church buildings and crosses.
One recent attack on China’s Christian community came with officials’ attempts to remove a cross from the Guantou church in Wenzhou.
Wenzhou, a port city on the South China Sea, has for centuries been a hub of Christian missionary activity and is known as “China’s Jerusalem.”
Before 1949, it was home to around 115,000 Christians, more than one-tenth of China’s total at the time.
On June 11, security guards with batons and riot shields were said to have been deployed to prevent members of the Guantou church from entering the building and attempting to halt the removal of a large red cross from one of the church’s domes.
Telegraph reported that the demolition workers were forced to retreat after church members got past the security personnel and disconnected the power supply. Several churchgoers were slightly injured in the scuffle.
The report said that the demolition workers returned early on Tuesday, and the cross was secretly taken down between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m.
A local Church leader, Zheng Legou, said that officials had threatened to tear down the entire church—as they did with the Sanjiang church in Wenzhou in April—if church members tried to stop the removal a second time.
The Telegraph published a photo showing a crane lifting a large red cross from the church. Another photo showed the damaged cross discarded on the church grounds.
Another church in Wenzhou scheduled to open to worshipers next year had its cross removed on June 15, according to The Telegraph.
Authorities have notified at least 15 churches that if they don’t remove their crosses by the end of June, they will face demolition, according to China Aid, a Christian advocacy group that claims some 360 church buildings and crosses have already been attacked.
Activists believe the Communist Party is attempting to rein in the growth of Christianity.
The government maintains that the demolition campaign is aimed at all illegal buildings and “eyesores” and not just churches.
But government documents obtained by The New York Times disclose that the campaign is intended to bring “excessive religious sites” and “overly popular” religious activities under control.
Christian activists are increasingly convinced, The Telegraph observes, that the “anti-church” campaign in Zhejiang “may be a precursor for similar actions across the country.” [myad]

Be Humble In Victory, President Jonathan Advices Fayose

Fayose and Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan has advised Peter Ayodele Fayose who has just been declared winner of the Saturday governorship election in Ekiti state under the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to be humble and magnanimous in victory.
He also asked him to be committed to forming an administration that will work for the advancement of the interests of all Ekiti people, irrespective of their political affiliations or loyalties.
In a congratulatory message to the governor-elect today, President Jonathan asked Fayose to regard his second chance to serve as Governor of Ekiti State as a sacred mandate from God and the people.
He said that the governor should discharge the gubernatorial responsibility with immense dedication, wisdom and vigour to achieve a much more rapid pace of socio-economic development of the state and for the benefit of its people who resoundingly reaffirmed their trust in his leadership.
He congratulated the governor-elect for what he called “an overwhelming victory in the governorship election.
The President said that as Fayose gets set to assume office in fulfillment of the clearly expressed wish of his people, the federal government will give him all necessary support and assistance.
This is in furtherance “of the present administration’s objective of significantly improving the living conditions of Nigerians in all parts of the country.”
The President wished Fayose continued good health and a successful second tenure as governor of Ekiti State, even as he commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Security Services and the people of Ekiti State for the successful and peaceful conduct of the elections.
This is “in keeping with the present administration’s avowed commitment to ensuring that elections in all parts of Nigeria are progressively freer, fairer and more credible.” [myad]

Super Eagles Pass Needle’s Eye, Manage 1-0 Win Over Bosnia

Peter Osaze Odemwingie
Peter Osaze Odemwingie

The Super Eagles of Nigeria returned some measure of smile back to the faces of despondent Nigerians when they beat the Bosnia national team…1 goal to nothing to remain in Brazil for the next match in the ongoing World Cup Tournament.

The Eagles had crawled to a drabbed and unimpressive start in their group opening match with Iran which ended in zero at piece.

A first-half strike from Peter Odemwingie was enough for Nigeria to register their first win in nine matches in the World Cup and defeat Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Group F clash in Cuiaba on Saturday.

World Cup debutants Bosnia, after losing the opener against Argentina 2-1, were facing a must-win situation against the Super Eagles, who were held to a goalless draw by a resilient Iran in their first match.

Bosnia started the match on the back foot and gifted a free-kick to the West Africans in the early minutes when Haris Medunjanin brought down Emmanuel Emenike but Odemwingie put his shot inches wide.

Emenike threatened Bosnia several times and created a number of chances as skipper Emir Spahic failed to restrict the 27-year-old. Emenike outpaced Spahic in the 29th minute and passed the ball to Odemwingie, who made no mistake in tucking home the winner.

However, the Dragons were robbed a goal minutes before when Edin Dzeko slotted home from Zvejzdan Misimovic’s precise through-ball but he was wrongly given off-side. [myad]

How Fayose Defeated Incumbent Fayemi In Ekiti Governorship Election

Ayo Fayose

It was a sweet win for the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Ayodele Fayose over the incumbent governor, Dr. John Kayode Fayemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the governorship election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission in the state yesterday (Saturday).

The PDP candidate had earlier yesterday, threw his hands into the air and agreed to accept whatever the result of the yet-to-be concluded election brought. He complained bitterly about the high level of violence and distribution of money by the APC agents to influence the electorate.

The official announcement of the election result today, showed that Ayo Fayose won by polling 203,090 while the incumbent governor Fayemi trailed far behind with 120,433 as the third party, the Labour Party’s Opeyemi Bamidele came a distance third.
