Nigeria On The Verge Of Economic Turnaround – Ex Petroleum Minister, Sylvia

The immediate past Nigeria’s minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylvia has said that going by the steps being taken by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria is set to witness economic turnaround
“I believe that we are on the verge of an economic turnaround in this country, and going by the American parlance: “Is the economy, stupid?”
Sylvia, who spoke to newsmen shortly after a private audience with President Bola Tinubu today, August 8, at the presidential villa, Abuja, said that Nigeria has gotten the kind of President it had always been wanting.
“We need a president who understands the economy and I believe that we have one now.”
He commended the President for the great things he has been doing, saying that for the first time in Nigeria, states and federal government are to share N1.9 trillion.
“I know that for a long time, every administration; every government in Nigeria had been trying to remove the fuel subsidy.
“We (ex President Muhammadu Buhari government) attempted it. And it was actually part of the campaign of every presidential election in the previous election in the past election.
“But for Mr. President to have achieved this feat on the first day of his presidency, it’s quite commendable. We’ve seen a lot happening in the monetary policy sector.”
On his campaign for the November 11 governorship election, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in Bayelsa State, Sylvia said: “we are set to take over Bayelsa and I had to inform Mr. President what we’re doing and also take advice from him.”
He listened a six-point agenda for the state if he wins the election.
“First point of the agenda is human capital development, including education, which is very important. We need to really develop the capacity of our people.
“The second point of the agenda is infrastructure. We really need it in Bayelsa state.
“Third point of the agenda is to develop an economy for Bayelsa. “And for Bayelsa, we believe that the economy that can easily be developed is a gas economy, because we are sitting on the highest deposit of gas in Nigeria.
“Fourth point in the agenda is agriculture and in agriculture, we are not going to also be trying everything. We are going to concentrate on rice production. As you know, rice grows well in the swamps and Bayelsa has a lot of swamps as you know. We have Peremadi rice project which was actually designed to produce rice for the whole of Nigeria and West Africa. But it’s been abandoned.
“So,  Bayelsa is actually within the rice belt. We are definitely going to become the biggest rice producer in Nigeria because we have comparative advantage. “And then of course, in agriculture we’re looking at also fishery.
“The fifth point of the agenda will be to stabilize power because you know that  if you want to grow an economy you need to stabilize power.
“In my previous incarnation in Bayelsa,  I was already on cause to stabilize power in Bayelsa before I left. “Unfortunately, they took it back 360 degrees.
“We must stabilize  power in Bayelsa, working with the federal government and we have the gas to fire the power sector.
“Then the six point of the agenda is to ensure that there is security. So with this six point agenda, we will hit the ground running. I can assure you, linking up with the great things that are going to be achieved from the federal side and with what you can see, I believe that the glory days of Bayelsa is just around the corner, just like the glory days of Nigeria, also around the corner.”

War Or No War: It Is Not Between Nigeria And Niger Republic – Presidency

The Presidency has made it clear that whatever happens on the issue around the military coup in Niger Republic is not a fight between Nigeria and that country.
The Presidency insisted that the coup and the issues around it are not individual actions taken by an individual President on behalf of individual nation.
The Presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale told newsmen in the Presidential villa, Abuja, today, August 8, that President Bola Tinubu only happened to be the ECOWAS chairman, who is standing on the authority provided by the consensus resolution of all ECOWAS members and  heads of state with regard to financial sanctions being levied by ECOWAS Member States against the military junta in Niger Republic.
“There is an authority that we are standing on. It is not Nigerian government’s authority; it is the authority of the resolution passed in public before now. This is the context, the nuance and the detail that is required in our reports, lest our people be misinformed.
“And we begin to be framed internationally as being in a situation where it’s Nigeria versus its neighbour, Niger, because that’s the narrative that some certain International Perspectives would like to advance for their own interest.”
Ngelale announced that President Tinubu has directed the acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to levy another slate of sanctions against entities and individuals associated with the military junta in Niger public.
“I can also report that following the expiration of the deadline of the ultimatum and standing on the pre-existing consensus position of financial sanctions meted out on the military junta in Niger Republic by the bloc of ECOWAS Heads of State, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered an additional slew of financial sanctions through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on entities and individuals related to, or involved with the military junta in Niger Republic.”

EDITORIAL: Resident Doctors’ Strike: Ill-Timed, Insensitive

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) is made up of some 15,000 frontline doctors in Nigerian public hospitals. They are medical school graduates, being trained as specialists. They are pivotal to frontline healthcare in Nigeria as they dominate the emergency and other relevant wards in hospitals.
At about July 12, 2023, they gave Bola Tinubu-led federal government two-week ultimatum to meet their demands, especially for salary increment or they would embark on indefinite strike across the country. In short, they wanted full implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure…as at the time of the approval of the structure in 2009.
As the negotiations ensued between the leadership of the Association and the government, something tangible dropped: the federal government offered the aggrieved doctors 25 percent increase in their salary, in addition to N25,000 peculiar allowance, but the doctors rejected all that.
And on July 26, they began the Nationwide strike, accusing President Tinubu and his barely two months old government of having failed to review their salaries after removing subsidy on fuel on assumption of office on May 29, 2023. They also complained about shortage of manpower in public hospitals where they work.
As a matter of fact, they turned out to be the first public sector workers to go on strike after fuel prices rose astronomically, resulting in the increase of transport fares and every other thing.
The doctors claimed that they embarked on the strike after “having considered all the numerous ultimatums, appeals, and engagements with government.”
It should not be lost on us that the government of Tinubu we are talking about here was barely two months in the saddle. In short, as at July 26 when they called out their members on a war path, President Tinubu was just 57 days in office.
As at that time, till now, the President has not assembled those who would help him to run the Federal Executive Council (FEC), made up of, mainly, ministers. There were so many other contending issues the President faced, all requiring urgent attention. They include, but not limited to, the dust raised in several other sectors as a result of the removal of the fuel subsidy; the unified foreign exchange rate; the security challenges; the reorganisation of security architecture and several others.
In the midst of all such contending priorities, the President still gave maximum listening ear to some forces jostling for his attention, including the Nigerian organised labour movements, the Resident Doctors and others. But just at the drop of a hat, the doctors called the shots and went on strike.
Of course, we at Greenbarge Reporters online newspaper understand the point of the Resident Doctors as being valid, but (we) are not comfortable that they are raising shoulders against their employers, and more importantly, abandoning their duty call when the government they are fighting hardly settled down to even understand where the cat jumped.
Indeed, the frequent rate at which doctors go on strike in recent times, although justified to some extent, is fast creating a not-too pleasant impression in the minds of the people; about their professional training that is supposed to be biased on human empathy and saving of lives.
We are surprised that an average medical doctor would derive any form of pleasure or semblance of it over the sordid plights of the patients who, ordinarily are his primary responsibility; the patients that are dying daily in hospitals, and even in their homes. All because of his deliberate absence, as a result of the pursuit of the worldly gains.
It is even more disturbing to know that other medical personnel in public hospitals, like nurses, pharmacists, lab technicians and others, with similar complain of unmet demands by the government, do swallow their prides and continue to work to save lives as per their professional calling, and with more human feelings.
It cannot be argued that doctors are more in need of financial boost for survival, even against the backdrop of their mouth-watering take-home pay, than the others in the hospital services; those who are offering services under the same environment as doctors, for the benefit of the poor patients.
We call on the resident doctors to urgently call off this needless strike, accept the offers of 25 percent salary increase and N25,000 peculiar allowance by the government that is still finding its feet.
Negotiations for more of their demands can continue while in service, by which they may even attract public sympathy and support.
Leaving the service for whatever excuses, as a way of twisting the arms of the government, to us, amounts to insensitivity and heartlessness.
As it is said in local parlance, it is better for one to accept half a loaf of bread than for one to continue to pursue the whole loaf of bread without any hope of getting anything. In other words, the resident doctors, and in deed, other unions and associations at negotiation table, should always learn to give and take. That is the way of democracy, which is a far cry from the authoriterian postures of most of the union and association the leadership, indicating an attitude of “it is either all or nothing.”
Union and Association leaders should learn to go into negotiation room with open minds for the purpose of shifting ground as the government also shifts ground on issues at stake.

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, today , August 7, hosted the Nigerian female Basketball Champions, D’tigress to a reception at the Presidential villa, Abuja.
The First Lady described their performance on the basketball court as a testament to hard work, discipline and commitment to excellence.
She said that such attributes would inspire countless individuals, especially women, to pursue their dreams.
“Your victory transcends sports, symbolizes the potential that can be realized when a diverse group of individuals come together with a common goal.

“I am immensely proud of your achievements and the positive image you have projected for our country. Your success reinforces the fact that Nigerian women are capable of reaching the highest level in any endeavour they choose to undertake.”
The Permanent secretary of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Alhaji Ismaila Abubakar thanked the First Lady for hosting the team.
He gave assurance that they would be going to the drawing board to get ready for the 2024 Olympic Games with victory on their mind.
The captain of the team presented the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket trophy to the First Lady, with the wife of the Vice President, wife of the Senate President supporting.

Nigeria Crashes Out Of Women’s World Cup, Loses 4-2 To England On Penalties

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have crashed out of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup competition in a 4-2 penalty shootouts with England.
In the game played today, August 7, the Super Falcons put up a gallant fight, dominating the play for most part of the game.
Ashleigh Plumptre had hit the cross bar earlier on, even as England struggled to create any clear cut chance with their best player, Lauren James finding it difficult to get on the ball.
Lauren was sent off late in the second half after stamping on Michelle Alozie.
The game went into extra-time when both teams failed to hit target after 90 minutes of thrilling action.
The European champions were pinned back in the extra time.
Alozie and Asisat Oshoala both came close to breaking the deadlock for Nigeria but could penetrate.
England went on to win 4-2 in the penalties.

FIFA Women’s World Cup: Nigeria Faces England In Game Of Death

Nigeria’s Super Falcons will tomorrow, August 7, confront England in the Round of 16 match of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brisbane, Australia.
Recall that England had defeated the Super Falcons 3-2 in both teams’ first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup meeting in 1995.
It is exactly 28 years and two months when Nigeria was defeated in the final Group B match played on June 10, 1995 at Tingvalla IP, Karlstad in front of a mere 1,843 spectators who watched from the one-sided stadium in Southern Sweden.
England goals had come from star-forwards: Karen Walker (27′) and Karen Farley (10′, 38′) while Nigeria’s two goals came from striker Adaku Okoroafor (13′) and winger Rita Nwadike (74′).
Since that time both countries have not met again in the World Cup and a lot of water has passed under bridge with each evolving in different ways and with contrasting fortunes in the biggest women’s football competition in the world.
While Nigeria’s best finish in the World Cup has been the quarter-final exit in 1999, no thanks to the better forgotten “Golden Goal Rule,” England has finished in the 4th Place in 2019 in France.
Also, England ranked No.4 in the FIFA World power ranking coming into this competition has changed the technical crew that led the team to France and brought in more experienced gaffer in Dutchwoman Sarina Wiegman who has delivered UEFA Women’s Championship trophy and the intercontinental cup after defeated Brazil in London last year.
For Nigeria ranked 40 in world, her performance in the Mundial since 1995 has been anything but impressive, safe for the 1999 feat under veteran Head Coach Ismaila Mabo, Nigeria has only made it to the Round of 16 only in 2019 in France under Thomas Dennerby of Sweden and 2023 under American coach Randy Waldrum.
In Australia, Nigeria has not lost a game after grinding out two barren draws and a 3-2 victory over co-host Australia in the second game of Group B, scoring three goals and conceding two in the process to finish second behind Australia to meet England in Round of 16.
Waldrum and his players have been having rave reviews in the media, talking with all air of confidence that nobody back home in Nigeria gave them a chance to do well in the ongoing competition but they have exceeded expectations.
Perhaps, it is this good run of the nine-time African champions that has attracted the interest of the world and they have to use the match against England to further prove that they can equal the quarter-final record of the Super Falcons Class of 1999 in USA.
But Super Falcons will have the star-studded England Three Lionesses to contend with if the result of England’s last group match on August 1 against China was anything to rely upon. England went goal-crazy hammering China 6-1 at Hindmarsh Stadium, Adelaide.
A brace from rising star Lauren James 41′, 65′ and one each from Russo 4′, Hemp 26′, Kelly 77′ and
Daly 84′ ensured that England top Group D with maximum points after beating Haiti and Denmark by a lone each.
Having reached the business end of the competition after a slow start and seeing that the high-ranked countries like Spain, Japan, Netherlands and Sweden have all qualified for the quarter-final stage, England will play a “Game of Death” against the dangerous Africans.
This is why the epic clash on Monday between Nigeria and England has elicited much interest across the globe and both countries will like get something from the match as any failure will mean the loser will crash out of the competition.
Truly, the match will be won by the team with superior match tactics and it will be a good stage to know between Sarina Wiegman and Randy Waldrum whose tactical prowess will be enough to carry his or her team over the line.
It will be very difficult to predict the winner but pedigree has alot to offer hence the better side on the day and with a little bit of mother luck will carry the day.

Defending Champion, USA, Kicked Out Of World Cup Champions By Sweden

The Defending champion, United States of America (USA) crashed out of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup today, August 6, against Sweden in the round of 16, failing to reach the semi-finals for the first time in the history of this tournament.
A penalty kick by Sweden’s Lina Hurtig in the seventh round of a shootout deflected off the hands of goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, but the ricochet was deemed to have crossed the line when examined by goal-line technology.
With this victory, the Swedes have advanced to play Asian giants, Japan in the quarter-final on Friday.
It is expected that another heavyweight will fall in this Round of 16 stage of the ongoing World Cup final in Australia and New Zealand but not many expected that Sweden will edge the USA in this dramatic fashion.
For the United States, it was a heartbreaking end to a tournament that never seemed to get rolling. They finished second in the group stage after beating Vietnam in their opening match and posting draws against the Netherlands and Portugal, barely squeaking into the knockout rounds after a Portuguese shot struck the wrong side of the post in stoppage time.
The squad dealt with injury issues, a yellow card suspension to star midfielder Rose Lavelle and a hailstorm of criticism from analysts and fans alike.
Manager Vlatko Andonovski entered the match against Sweden under incredible pressure to turn the tide. And for a while it appeared that he had done it.
With Lavelle unable to play, Andonovski switched his formation from a 4-3-3 to a 4-2-3-1 and fortified the midfield by introducing Emily Sonnett, an extra holding player alongside Andi Sullivan.
The strategy worked beautifully as the Americans reasserted themselves in position and maintained more of the ball than they had in either of the last two matches. Wingers Sophia Smith and Trinity Rodman looked exceptionally potent down the wings. The confidence and swagger returned.
But just as with all tournament, the final product still eluded the United States. Finishing chances was, and still is, the biggest Achilles’ heel for a country that is transitioning from one generation of stars to another.
The U.S. out-shot Sweden 22-9 overall and finished with an 11-1 edge in shots on target but was unable to beat goalkeeper Zecira Musovic, who was the best player on the field for either team.

Coup In Niger: We Support ECOWAS’ Moves, But Not War – NIPSS Graduates

Graduates of the Senior Executive Course of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) Kuru, under the auspices of the
Alumni Association of the National Institute of Nigeria (AANI), has expressed support for the punitive measures taken so far by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) against the new military dispensation in Niger Republic after a military coup d’etat, but cautioned against armed invasion of the country.
A statement today, August 6, by its National Publicity Secretary, retired Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman, said that the Association strongly condemned the military seizure of power in the Niger Republic even as it supported the efforts of ECOWAS’ efforts towards restoring democracy in the country.
“However, in restoring democracy, ECOWAS should consider the immediate and long-term implications of its actions on the people of the Niger Republic and the wider West African sub-region.”
AANI said that addressing the root causes of the political crisis in the Niger Republic and strengthening the democratic institutions in the country is vital to achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.
“AANI, therefore, urges caution against immediate military action. Instead, non-military options like diplomatic pressure and economic sanctions should be adopted towards a peaceful resolution and a quicker return to democratic governance in the Niger Republic.
“Military action by ECOWAS may escalate the current situation into a humanitarian crisis and worsen the security challenges in the West African sub-region. It may also escalate tensions in the fragile security situation in the Lake Chad region and other parts of West Africa, attracting other armed groups and external actors to take advantage of it. This would exacerbate the security challenges and create a more complex and dangerous situation. “It is, therefore, essential to prioritise peaceful and diplomatic solutions to the political crisis.
“ECOWAS should upscale diplomatic efforts to persuade the military leaders in Niger to relinquish power and allow the democratically elected government to reclaim the people’s mandate.
“By avoiding military intervention, ECOWAS would have demonstrated commitment to peaceful conflict resolution and regional stability.
“AANI believes that finding durable solutions to the prevailing political crisis in Niger Republic lies in prioritising the well-being of the civilian population and upholding the principles of democracy, human rights, and regional cooperation within ECOWAS.
“Its only through peaceful means that ECOWAS can ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for the people of Niger Republic and the broader West African community.”

Move By President Tinubu To Probe Emefiele’s Leadership Of CBN Commendable, By Salisu Jaji

We strongly commend the latest move by president Tinubu appointment of Jim Osayande Obazee, the Chief Executive Officer, Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN) as Special Investigator to probe the CBN and its related entities under Emefiele leadership.

The recent happenings resulting from the move made by the Department of State Services (DSS) to rearrest and continue to interrogate the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, is a commendable job. It is known that the DSS are accusing the CBN governor of economic and financial crimes of national security dimension and have even filed an ex-parte motion at the high court in Abuja for his arrest over these accusations.
However, while the sitting judge declined the ex-parte motion filed, he mentioned that if the DSS believes that the evidence available to it so far is sufficient, then it has the jurisdiction to arrest and detain the applicant, even without the order of the court. So, in all fairness to DSS their operation is within the ambit of rule of law.
Though this may not stop some disgruntle elements from outside the government and as well as influential politicians who are very close to the embattled former CBN governor, and who have benefitted hugely from Godwin Emefiele scams against Nigerian people at CBN through receiving all sort of contracts and financial favours are fighting back on his behalf. It was found that the above the described elements are using their influence inside the administration of president Tinubu as well as using proxies (by sponsoring protest by selfish civil society groups and attacks from media outlets) to fight the DSS particularly with the aim to smear the name and efforts of its Director-General, Yusuf Bichi, and some of the service’s key officials of the DSS. These selfish politicians have shown to have no regards to the rule of law, nor do they care about the general security of the country.
It is important that Nigerians ask the following important questions – What is Emefiele doing with that catchment of ammunitions discovered at his home? Why are powerful people who are known to be selfish and corrupt supporting Emefiele and shielding him away from facing justice? If Emefiele believe he is not guilty and he can prove that over the course of the investigation that will be huge win for his image in this country. And we all know that he will never go down unjustifiably, he can afford the best lawyers in this country, also his cohorts and friends will ensure that he get justice. But it is clear to Nigerians that the CBN governor and cohorts are trying hard to scuttle the investigation, for them it is not a matter of justice or proving innocence but a matter of LEAVE HIM ALONE irrespective of what he has done wrong. It is important for Bola Tinibu led administration to know that if this case is allowed to be swept under the carpet. it has the tendency of creating sense of impunity and demoralize the agile operatives of DSS and other security agencies jointly fought to unearth the criminality of Emefiele.
It is also very important for citizens of our country to understand that we cannot afford to allow people in power to act and behave recklessly, mismanage our resources, abuse their office, and still get away with it, just because they are being shielded by the power surrounding them. We cannot have a country were only the poor and powerless are subjected to the rule of law whereas those in power and their cohorts are not. And worst of all is when these enemies of progress use the illiteracy and hunger of some of our citizens to deceive them into fighting their selfish war against the very people that protect the interest of this country. Every Nigerian should be grateful to the DSS and its Director General, Mr Bichi due to their efforts in taming the monstrous insecurity facing this nation. Since the coming in of Mr Bichi, the DSS has been nothing but excellent playing its role diligently, gathering security intelligence and fighting so much security threats a lot of which most the public are not even aware of. We all know that DSS is saddled with critical functions of prevention and detection of any crime/terrorism against the internal security of Nigeria and provision of timely advice to Government on all matters of National security interest among other. So why will their investigation on the CBN governor be an exception just because of the interest of selfish elements. Nigerians need to understand that if the accusations against Emefiele are true and the DSS are prevented from carrying out their constitutional duty on the matter, the cost of this will be enormous capable bringing this country on its knees, emboldening terrorist sponsors and worse demoralising our security agencies and personnel.
Nigerians should not allow politicians and selfish elements to turn us against the very institution that protect our security interest and enemies of this countries. While it is expected that when corrupt elements and officials are investigated by security agencies, they will fight back, however its duty Nigerian citizens to stand in solidarity with the DSS in protecting and imposing sanity in the public institutions. It is understood that these selfish backers of the Mr Emefiele are using every influence at their disposal reaching out to sellout media to smear the name of DSS Director and its officials. Thus, it is imperative that Nigerians stand in solidarity and talk with one voice to support the DSS and its official, and urging the presidency to do all what it takes to support DSS on such critical security investigations.
We strongly commend the latest move by president Tinubu appointment of Jim Osayande Obazee, the Chief Executive Officer, Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN) as Special Investigator to probe the CBN and its related entities under Emefiele leadership. We hope similar action will be extended in the case of former EFCC boss, Abdulrasheed Bawa to reap what he sows.
Ambassador Salisu Jaji wrote in from Abuja
