The world oldest newspaper, Wiener Zeitung, printed in Vienna, has stopped hardcopy production and has gone fully online.
The newspaper printed its last daily edition on June 30, 2023, nearly 320 years after it began in 1703.
It was reportedly driven off the newsstands because advert revenue has dwindled and cannot sustain the hard copy.
The newspaper has now gone solely online also following a recent law that made it difficult to be profitable as a print product.
The law, passed in April by Austria’s coalition government, ended a legal requirement for companies to pay to publish public announcements in the print edition of the newspaper, thereby terminating Wiener Zeitung’s role as an official gazette.
Report reaching us said that the change had resulted in an estimated €18 million (£15 million) loss of income for the publisher, according to Der Spiegel.
The new law has forced the paper to cut 63 jobs, including reducing its editorial staff from 55 to 20.
The newspaper, according to informed sources, will continue to publish online and is hoping to distribute a monthly print edition.
It was learnt that the plan is still in development.
An Assistant Inspector General of Police, Mbu Joseph Mbu, has been awarded the sum of N40 million as general damages, against the Police Service Commission (PSC) which retired him him in 2016.
The National Industrial Court, which ordered the PSC today, July 3, to pay Mbu the money, said that the payment was to compensate Mbu for his unlawful retirement before he attained the mandatory age of 60 years.
The presiding judge, Justice Osatohanmwen Obaseki-Osaghae, said: ”I hold that the claimant’s premature retirement through a press release on July 2, 2016 is unlawful, unconstitutional, null and void and of no effect.”
The court, in addition, set aside the purported retirement and declared that the claimant remained an officer of the Nigeria Police Force ( NPF), until he attained the mandatory retirement age of 60 on May 10, 2018.
The court ordered the defendant to pay Mbu his salaries, allowances and entitlement from July 2, 2016 when he was retired until May 10, 2018 when he ought to have retired having attained 60 years.
The judge ordered that the sum of N750,000 be paid to the claimant as cost of the suit, saying that failure of the defendant to comply with the orders of the court within 30 days will attract a 10 per cent interest per annum.
The court, however, declined the relief of promotion to the position of a DIG and reinstatement sought by the claimant.
This, the court explained cannot be sustained as the claimant had reached the mandatory retirement age on May 10, 2018 when the suit was pending.
From facts, the claimant, Mbu instituted the suit against the commission over his alleged compulsory retirement on July 2, 2016, when he was the commandant of the Police Staff College.
In his statement of facts, he stated that he was born May 10, 1958, and joined the police on Dec. 11, 1985, and had not reached the mandatory retirement age of 60, nor had he spent 35 years in service before he was retired in 2016.
The claimant had therefore sought, amongst other reliefs, an order of the court to invalidate his retirement, which he claimed was done via a press release as he was never served statutory notice of retirement.
He also sought for an order of the court directing the defendant to pay his salaries, allowances and other entitlements from July 2016 to 2018, when he would have been due for retirement.
He also sought for payment of his terminal benefits, N500 million as general damages and N20 million as cost of the suit.
The defendant on its part through processes stated that the claimant was not retired through press release, but that he was pulled out from the force in a ceremonial event.
The defendant averred that promotion in the force is not automatic and that the claimant did not meet some of the requirements for promotion.
According to the defendant, the reorganisation in NPF at the time of the claimant’s retirement followed due process and the claimant was not the only person affected.
The court, in its judgment said that although the defendant abandoned it case by failing to show up in court to conduct its defence, the action did not exonerate the claimant from the burden to proof his case.
The judge submitted that pleadings are not synonymous to evidence as the defendant was never in court regardless of several hearing notices served.
Obaseki-Osaghae in addition stated that the defendant was deemed to have abandoned its case as the claimant’s submissions were not contested.
She said that the claimant having proven his case on its strength through credible evidence without relying on the weakness of the defendant’s, was entitled to some of the reliefs he sought.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Public Health Department has announced the outbreak of diphtheria infection in some parts of the capital city.
The Director of the Department, Dr. Sadiq Abdulrahman, who spoke to newsmen today, July 3, explained that Diphtheria is a serious infection caused by strains of bacteria called Corynebacterium diphtheriae. It produces toxins that can lead to difficulty in breathing, heart rhythm problems and could lead to death.
Some of the symptoms are fever, runny nose, sore throat, cough, red eyes, neck swelling, and difficulty in breathing.
Dr. Abdulrahman said that the disease had already killed a four-year-old baby.
He recalled that the outbreak of the disease had earlier been confirmed in Lagos, Kano and Ondo states in January, adding that it triggered a national response by the National Centre for Disease (NCDC).
He said that the outbreak of the infection in the FCT was confirmed after one of the results from the samples taken from suspected cases in a village close to Dei-Dei area, returned positive.
The Director sked residents to be conscious of their personal hygiene.
He advised them to report any strange symptoms, particularly one relating to their respiratory health to relevant authorities.
“Two weeks ago, we got information from a community within the FCT of eight cases and that made our team to pick some samples.
“The samples were taken to the National Reference Laboratory, Gaduwa and the NCDC, and one of the suspected cases came out positive.”
He explained that the Department is collaborating with neighbouring states to checkmate further spread of the disease through border surveillance.
Also, the Executive Secretary, FCT Primary Health Care Board (PHCB), Dr. Yahaya Vatsa, said that unvaccinated people and those living in crowded and unhygienic environments are at high risk of contracting the disease.
Dr Vatsa said that the disease spreads through direct contact with infected people, droplets from coughing or sneezing and contact with contaminated clothing and objects.
This, according to him, underscores the importance of hygiene and environmental sanitation as preventive measures.
“To reduce the risk of contracting the disease, FCT residents are hereby advised to ensure that their children are fully vaccinated with three doses of the pentavalent vaccine.
“This is recommended in the National Childhood Immunisation Schedule.”
The executive secretary said that the FCTA, through the PHCB had concluded plans to revaccinate all children bellow 14 years in the affected communities.
He said that six weeks to four year old children would receive Penta Vaccine, while children between four years and 14 years would receive Td vaccine.
He added that the board would intensify routine immunisation across the six Area Councils of the FCT and take immunization services to the doorstep of the people.
Dr. Vatsa advised individuals with any of the signs and symptoms to isolate themselves and notify the FCT Disease Surveillance Notification Officer or the Emergency Operation Center, through the FCT Call Center toll-free lines.
He said that close contacts with infected cases are being closely monitored with prophylactic antibiotics,” he said.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has denied claims that it had given a license to Alhaji Aliko Dangote, owner of the Dangote refinery, to import the Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS) also known as petrol, pending completion of his refinery
The company explained that it is not within its jurisdiction to grant a license or permit for fuel importation.
Report, published in a national daily recently, had claimed that the imported fuel would be discharged at the Dangote barge and pumped into tanks to be sold at a market-dictated price to marketers while work progresses at the refinery.
Reacting to the report, the media relations manager at the NNPCL, Onyi Sunday, described the report as misleading.
“The report is misleading. We don’t grant licenses or permits because we are not a regulatory organization. “The responsibility lies with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), not NNPCL. “NNPCL has just a small stake of 20 per cent in the refinery.”
