Race For Governorship Of Jigawa: Namadi Of APC Holds The Aces, By Abdullah Zubayr

The current Jigawa State Deputy Governor, Mallam Umar Namadi has since emerged the Gubernatorial flag bearer of his All Progressives Congress (APC), going into the Saturday, March 18 election with many things working in his favour.
Aside from the incumbency factor, other factors have been identified to be strongly in his favour in the race to the Government House in Dutse.
Speaking to news men in Abuja, the Chief Executive Officer of Emeralds Green-Label Insurance Brokers, Mallam Mikhail Abdulmalik said that he had known Namadi for over 20 years and that given what he knew about the chartered accountant turned politician, he may have been divinely prepared for the position he’s now contesting for in the State.
Abdulmalik noted that the APC governorship candidate was a disciplined and thorough-bred financial expert whose wealth of experinece in both private and public service would add enormous value to good governance. “And this is evident in the various positions he has occupied in the State from the Commissioner of Finance to Deputy Governor,” he said.
Abdulmalik, a chartered insurance broker explained that Namadi is an acknowledged humble man flushed with deep fear of God and he’s widely interacted indiscriminately.
He added that the governorship hopeful parades impeccable academic credentials matched with morals, humility, thoroughness and sound leadership capacity.
According to Abdulmalik, another salient factor that would work in his favour is that since the creation of Jigawa State in 1991 and the subsequent birth of democracy in 1999, Namadi’s Senatorial district, Jigawa Northeast (Hadeija emirate) has never produced the State Governor saved the other two – Jigawa North West (Gumel, Kazaure and Ringim Emirates) and Jigawa South West (Dutse Emirate). The two districts have each produced the civilian governor twice respectively.
“Now that his district has got the ticket to field Namadi, a consummate technocrat and silent philanthropist as flag bearer of the ruling APC that has also done so well in the State, I see him ambling his way to the Government House following his victory at the polls come Saturday, March 18, 2023, God willing, he posited.
lt would be recalled that Namadi had promised in his manifestos to ensure that Jigawa State’s resources were efficiently and prudently utilized and that the State’s economy would be diversified to create job opportunities for the teeming youths.
Acknowledging that the State is agrarian, he also promised to prioritise agriculture, environment, healthcare, education as well as urban and rural infrastructure development. He also intend to invest in technology and innovation.

JAMB Shifts 2023 Mock Examination To March 30

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has shifted the 2023 Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) mock examination earlier scheduled for Thursday, March 16 to Thursday, March 30.
The Head of Public Affairs and Protocol, Dr. Fabian Benjamin told newsmen in Abuja today, March 13, that the shift became necessary because of the postponement of governorship elections from March 11 to March 18.
“Candidates who registered early and indicated their willingness to take the Mock-UTME would be notified as to when to print their Mock-UTME notification slips, which would contain their centres and other details.
“The Mock-UTME is an optional examination introduced by JAMB to provide opportunity for candidates to have hands-on experience with the system.
“It also affords JAMB an opportunity to ascertain its readiness and that of its partners for the main UTME scheduled to hold between April 29 and May 12, 2023.
“The board also uses this opportunity to announce that the 2023 UTME would witness some ground-breaking innovations to address observed infractions and centre failures.
“For instance, in the new regime, if there is a delay of up to one hour before the commencement of a particular session, that session stands cancelled and would be rescheduled along with the candidates,’’ he said.
Benjamin said that no examination would be started one hour after the scheduled commencement time as the session would be scheduled for any vacant or available slot
“JAMB has made it mandatory that candidates must be notified of their new scheduled sessions or centres, as the case may be, before they leave their original centre.
“In addition, no candidate would be allowed to spend less than one hour before submission of responses during the UTME.
“Similarly, the new regime would make it impossible for candidates to login after one hour of activation of examination.
“If for any reason an examination session is cancelled or cannot hold, candidates are not to panic as they will simply be scheduled for the next available session, which could be that same day,’’’ he said.
Benjamin called on candidates who might experience delays to log into the system to quietly leave the hall and move to the “Holding Area’’ to await further instructions.
He advised candidates not to leave the examination centre until they had been notified of the day and time of their rescheduled examination.
“Candidates are to note that any rescheduled examination is strictly to accommodate only those whose examination session could not hold on account of one reason or another.
“It is not for those who were marked LATE or ABSENT for their session.”

CBN Has No Reason Waiting For Buhari’s Order To Comply With Court Ruling – Presidency

The Presidency has come out to deny accusation that President Muhammadu Buhari has refused to comply with the Supreme Court ruling directing the restoration of old N500 and N1,000 notes as legal tenders in the country up to December 31, 2023.
In a statement today, March 13, a presidential spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu said that it is unfair for people to blame the President for the current controversy over the cash scarcity, despite the Supreme Court judgement.
“The CBN has no reason not to comply with court orders on the excuse of waiting for directives from the President.”
The statement said that President Buhari rejected the impression that he lacks compassion, saying: “no government in our recent history has introduced policies to help economically marginalised and vulnerable groups like the present administration.”
It stressed that since the President is not a micromanager, he cannot stop the Attorney General and the CBN Governor from performing the details of their duties in accordance with the law.
“In any case, it is debatable at this time if there is proof of willful denial by the two of them on the orders of the apex court.”
The statement said: “the directive of the President, following the meeting of the Council of State is that the Bank must make available for circulation all the money that is needed and nothing has happened to change the position.”
The statement made it clear that President Buhari never instructed the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele or the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami to disobey the Supreme Court ruling.
“The Presidency wishes to react to some public concerns that President Muhammadu Buhari did not react to the Supreme Court judgement on the issue of the N500 and N1,000 old currency notes, and states here plainly and clearly that at no time did he instruct the Attorney General and the CBN Governor to disobey any court orders involving the government and other parties.”
The statement emphasized that the President  never directed anybody to defy court orders since he was sworn into office in 2015.
“Following the ongoing intense debate about the compliance concerning the legality of the old currency notes, the Presidency therefore wishes to state clearly that President Buhari has not done anything knowingly and deliberately to interfere with or obstruct the administration of justice.
“It is an established fact that the President is an absolute respecter of judicial process and the authority of the courts. He has done nothing in the last eight or so years to act in any way to obstruct the administration of justice, cause lack of confidence in the administration of justice, or otherwise interfere or corrupt the courts and there is no reason whatsoever that he should do so now when he is getting ready to leave office.
“The negative campaign and personalised attacks against the President by the opposition and all manner of commentators is unfair and unjust, as no court order at any level has been issued or directed at him.
“As for the cashless system the CBN is determined to put in place, it is a known fact that many of the country’s citizens who bear the brunt of the sufferings, surprisingly support the policy as they believe that the action would cut corruption, fight terrorism, build an environment of honesty and reinforce the incorruptible leadership of the President.”

43 Nigerian Nurses Indicted For Certificate Forgery In America

The Texas Board of Nursing in the United States has filed “formal charges” against 75 persons for fraudulently obtaining educational credentials.

The board released a 75-person probe list on their website over issues bordering on falsification of certificates, out of which 43 of the names were identified as nurses of Nigeria origin.

The people, who obtained the fake nursing credentials, were reported to have used them to qualify for the National Nursing Board Exam, information on the Board’s website regarding the investigation dubbed “Operation Nightingale” disclosed.

Upon successful completion of the board exam, the nursing applicants reportedly became eligible to obtain license in various states to work as a Registered Nurse (RN) or a Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse (LPN/VN).

A statement on the website disclosed that on January 25, 2023, the US Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG) and law enforcement partners launched a multi-state coordinated law enforcement action to apprehend individuals engaged in a scheme to sell false and fraudulent nursing degree diplomas and transcripts.

The statement reads in part: “The alleged scheme involved the selling of fake and fraudulent nursing degree diplomas and transcripts obtained from accredited Florida-based nursing schools to Registered Nurse (RN) and Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse (LPN/VN) candidates.

“This list will be updated continuously as the Board receives additional information about the fraudulent diploma/transcript scheme.”

The Board added that it is working, diligently, with all appropriate nursing regulatory bodies, nursing education program providers, accreditation bodies and authorities to detect, investigate and resolve these matters as quickly as possible, including seeking revocation of any licensure obtained through fraudulent means.

“Please note that formal charges are not a final disciplinary action, and a nurse is permitted to work, as a nurse, while formal charges are pending,” it added.

NCC Asks Mobile Network Operators To Start Implementing Harmonized Short Codes

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has directed mobile network operators (MNOs) to commence implementation of approved harmonized short codes (HSC) for providing certain services to telecom consumers in Nigeria.

A statement today, March 13, by the Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka said that the implementation of the HSC is in line with the NCC’s consumer-centric approach to telecoms regulation.

The statement said that the Commission has already set a deadline of May 17, 2023, for all mobile networks to fully migrate from hitherto diverse short codes to the harmonised codes.

It said that the use of harmonised short codes is aimed at achieving uniformity in common short codes across networks.

“This means that the code for checking airtime balance is the same across all mobile networks for the same function, irrespective of the network a consumer uses.

“With the new codes, the telecom consumers using the over 226 million active mobile lines in the country, can now use the same codes to access services across the networks.

“Consequently, under the new harmonised short codes regime, 13 common short codes have been approved by the Commission. They include the following codes: 300 to be used as the harmonised code for Call Centre/Help Desk on all mobile networks; 301 for voice Mail Deposit; 302 for Voice Mail Retrieval; 303 for Borrow Services; 305 for STOP Service; 310 for Check Balance, and 311 for Credit Recharge.

“Also, the common code for Data Plan across networks is now 312. In line with the new direction, 321 is for Share Services, while 323 is for Data Plan Balance. The code, 996, is now for Verification of Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) Registration/NIN-SIM Linkage. The code, 2442, is retained for Do-Not-Disturb (DND) unsolicited messaging complaint management, while the common code, 3232, is also retained for Porting Services, otherwise called Mobile Number Portability.

“The old and new harmonised short codes will run concurrently up until the May 17, 2023, when all networks are expected to have fully migrated to full implementation of the new codes.  The period between now and May 17, 2023 is provided by the NCC to enable telecom consumers to familiarise themselves with the new codes for various services.

“The initiative, which is in line with NCC’s regulatory modernisation programme, is essentially to make life much easier for telecom consumers, as it is now easier for Nigerians to memorise single codes for various services across all mobile networks they may be using, thereby improving consumer quality of experience (QoE).

“In addition, the new policy will provide opportunity for licensees in the Value-Added Services (VAS) segment of the telecoms sector to be able to use freed-up/old codes for other services, as well as enhance cohesive regulatory framework in keeping with world-class practices.”

I Was Supposed To Win 100% In Anambra; I Don’t Know Who’ll Vote Against Me – Obi

Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi has said that he was supposed to have won 100 percent of vote cast in Anambra State in the February 25 Presidential election because nobody would vote against him.

Speaking today, on an Arise TV programme, Peter Obi said: “if you want to know whether I got 95% in Anambra State, come and go to Anambra with me. I don’t need Police. When I come out, you will see the reaction of the people.

“In fact, I am actually surprised that I did not get up to 100%. I’m telling you, because I don’t know who can be voting against me in Anambra State.

“In the South-East, it’s a similar situation. People know me, people know what I stand for, people know I have kept to my promises, people know I have kept to what I have said.

“It’s a simple thing. Is like people go about to say oh, he got votes in Lagos because of the Igbos. How many Igbos live in Lagos? Are there Igbos in Nasarawa? Are there Igbos in Plateau, are there Igbos in Abuja?

“In Rivers where you know that the Governor came out, kicked against me. If the real votes of Rivers were counted, I won. I have over 50 per cent of the votes, the other two parties were sharing the other.

“I won in Aso Rock. Would you say it is rigging? Which machinery do I have to rig? I have no councilor, no Local Government Chairman, I’m not in control of anything, not even the DPO. So which machinery will I use to rig?

“They are the ones who have believed in this. What they are doing is what I’m trying to change and those who are not certified with what I came for are part of the people we are trying to change.”

Story Of Fresh Plot Against Tinubu By CBN Governor Is Fake – CBN Spokesman

CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele

The Acting Director, Corporate Communications of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr. Isa Abdulmumin has described news making the rounds that the apex bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele is engaged in a fresh plan against the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as fake.

In a statement today, March 13, Dr. Abdulmumin said that the news, published in the Nation newspaper is false and malicious.

“We wish to inform members of the public that this story is completely false and malicious as the Governor does not know and has never met or even spoken with Mr Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour either in person or through proxy.”

The spokesman said the CBN Governor is not a politician, advising detractors to allow Emefiele and his team to concentrate on their assignment.

“The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been drawn to a story published in The Nation newspaper of Monday, March 13, 2023 edition, alleging that the Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele has launched a “fresh plot against President-elect.”

“The aforementioned story went further to allege that the Governor has made a certain amount of money available to a political aspirant ahead of March 18, 2023 gubernatorial poll.

“We wish to reiterate that the CBN Governor does not take part in politics and therefore urge anyone with contrary information to prove the Governor wrong should provide such facts.

“As such, the Governor and team at the CBN should be allowed to focus on their assigned job with a view to achieving statutory mandates of the bank.”

The newspaper had alleged that the CBN Governor had made “certain amount of money available to a political aspirant ahead of March 18, 2023 gubernatorial poll.”

Presidency Gives Pass Mark To February 25 Presidential Election, Commends Nigerians

Shehu Garba

The Presidency has described the Presidential election held on February 25 across the country as an improvement on the previous elections.

The election produced Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as President-elect, even as the opposition political party candidates and their supporters have condemned the election as the worst in the history of the country.

In a statement today, March 13, Malam Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant on media and publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari said that no one has disputed the result of the election, except the candidates that fell short.

“The biggest and the most competitive presidential election in the history of Nigeria has been won by one man: Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The US State department congratulated President-elect Bola Tinubu of the governing All Progressives Congress, APC and the people of Nigeria on the outcome of the “competitive election.”

“British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, was also quick to congratulate the winner, on this victory. And so did many others in ECOWAS and the African Union.”

Garba Shehu said that although there were some delays and technical faults “in the process that we can learn from – as is the case in any election the world over but that the vote progressed and consolidated democracy in Nigeria.

“The integrity of the Electoral Act of 2022 was strengthened.  The Bimodal Voter Accreditation System cut out ghost, unauthorised or multiple votes to stem fraud. The election may not have been pluperfect, but due to the steps the government has taken, it is an improvement on previous polls.

“That achievement should not be overlooked. The next step is for the Election Commission to ensure transparency in collation.”

He said that adverse reactions as received from some quarters are themselves a part of the learning process for everyone, saying: “elsewhere, the world had been treated to epic lies, obfuscation, jingoism and hate, and told by global media to expect a different outcome. Nigerians shocked the world by refusing religious hatred and sectarian politics.

“All true friends of Nigeria should join the people in proceeding forward for sustainable peace.

“APC victory in the presidential election, underscored by the nationwide wave of support in the National Assembly results is clear mandate for the party to retain power for another term of four years.

“This election is an improvement on past elections and due credit should be given to the government and people of this country.

He thanked former ambassadors, Mark Green and Johnnie Carson, along with other foreign observers, for their concerns over the logistics of the election in their work as observers on the National Democratic Institute/International Republican Institute Election Observation Missions.

How Late Senator Afegbua Influenced Women Into Politics – Oluremi Tinubu Recalls

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the wife of the President-elect Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has expressed sadness over the death of the first elected female Senator, Franca Afegbua, saying that her contributions to Nigeria and the womenfolk will never be forgotten.

She described Seantor Afegbua who died on Sunday at 80 in her Benin-City home in Edo State, as a trailblazer and quintessential lawmaker who led the way in showing that women can participate in politics and make meaningful impacts.

In a statement she personally signed, Senator Tinubu said: “I received with shock the news of the demise of Chief Franca Afegbua, Nigeria’s first elected female Senator.

“Senator Afegbua made history in October 1983 when she was elected to the Senate to represent the people of Bendel North on the platform of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN), defeating John Umolu of the Unity Party of Nigeria, the then ruling party in the defunct Bendel State.

“From being a widely celebrated beautician to breaking the glass ceiling and showing the Nigerian women that they can participate in politics and make meaningful impact, Senator Afegbua was a trailblazer who paved the way for others including me.

“Although her tenure in the Senate was cut short by the return to military rule in December 1983, she spent the rest of her life being an active citizen, advocating adequate representation of women in politics and governance.

“Senator Afegbua’s contributions to Nigeria and the womenfolk will never be forgotten. She embodied every quality women need to thrive in Nigeria’s political space, and her wisdom and guidance will be sorely missed.

“I commiserate with her family, the people of Okpella in Etsako East Local Government Area where she hailed from, and the governments and people of Edo and Delta states. I join others to pray for the repose of her soul and for God to comfort all the loved ones she left behind.”
