Gov Wike Of PDP Thanks Nigerians For Manifesting Power Shift By Voting Tinubu

Governor Nyeson Wike of River State

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, has thanked Nigerians for supporting the return of power to the Southern part of Nigeria as part of the unwritten agreement, through the election of Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 25 presidential election in the country.

He said that the issue of rotational presidency has been settled for good with the emergence of Tinubu, who is from the southern region of the country.

Governor Wike spoke today, March 3, when he joined his Oyo State counterpart, Seyi Makinde to commission the Oyo State 5,000,000-litre Aviation Fuel Dispensing Depot at the Ibadan Airport in the Alakia area of the state.

The Rivers Governor expressed delight that Makinde is one of those that backed power shift to the south after the eight-year tenure of the incumbent Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari who is from Katsina State in the North-West geopolitical zone.

“I am happy he (Makinde) is one of those that made history by making sure that power shifted to the south.

“I have told people that those who fight for change, who fight for revolution may not be direct beneficiaries of that fight but today, history has it that all of us now are aware that when power finishes from the south, it will go to the north; when it finishes from the north, it will come to the south.”

“So, it does not need to be written in the constitution at all before it is implemented. And I thank Nigerians for standing firm to see that this issue materialise.”

PDP Governors Scared Peter Obi  Out Of The Party – Atiku

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar | Reuters

The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 25 election in the country, Atiku Abubakar has said that his counterpart in the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi ran away from the PDP at the time the governors in the party vowed to choose one of them for the Presidency.

According to him, at meetings of the leaders of the party last year when preparation for the primary was in top gear, the governors insisted that they would produce amongst themselves, Presidential, Vice Presidential candidates and the post of Chief of Staff.

Atiku, who was answering reporters’ questions at the world press conference on the outcome of the Presidential election, said: “Peter Obi, seeing that he would have nothing to fall back on after the 2023 elections, ran away to join the Labour Party.

“But I remained in the party and fought the governors to win the primary of the party, ahead of the 2023 Presidential election.”

The PDP flag bearer said that if Obi had remained like him, he would probably have picked him as running mate with plan to fully supporting him to succeed him after his tenure.

He said that he picked Igbos as his running mates in the two previous contests he ran, adding that he had always looked for a chance to create workable opportunity for Igbo to be President in no distant future.

Atiku agreed that Peter Obi wounded his ambition in the 2023 election by taking over the Southeast and South South votes that were traditionally his, but insisted that the two of them would have been winners now, if they had combined forces.

Supreme Court Describes Buhari’s Action On Redesigned Naira Notes As Autocracy

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has described the President Muhammadu Buhari’s broadcast of February 16, 2023 on the redesigned Naira notes as autocracy.
It said that for the President to say in that broadcast that only N200 notes should remain legal tender was a threat to democracy, “which risked replacing democracy with autocracy.”
The apex Court, which ruled today, March 3, reversing the President’s directive and the policy of Cashless economy introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), directed that the old N1,000 and N500 notes should continue to exist along with the new notes as legal tenders.
In a unanimous decision, a seven-member panel of the court, led by Justice John Okoro directed that the CBN must continue to receive the old notes from Nigerians.
The court held that the directive of President Buhari for the redesign of the new notes and withdrawal of the old notes without due consultation is invalid.
The lead judgement was read by Justice Emmanuel Agim, who also criticized the President’s disobedience of the court’s earlier order that the old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes should continue to circulate alongside the new ones.
The Supreme Court’s ruling means that the CBN will be required to continue to issue and circulate the old N1,000 and N500 notes.
The court’s decision also means that the CBN will need to revisit its plans for a redesign and consult more widely with stakeholders before introducing any new notes.
The CBN had announced plans to redesign the naira notes and introduce new ones, with a deadline of January 31, 2023, for the phasing out of the old notes. However, the move was met with widespread criticism and legal challenges from various quarters.
The Supreme Court’s ruling was the result of a case filed by some State Governments challenging the CBN’s decision to phase out the old notes. The plaintiffs argued that the move would cause undue hardship to the public, especially those in rural areas who may not have easy access to the new notes.
The court also cited concerns about the potential impact on the economy and the public.
The court’s decision is seen as a major victory for the plaintiffs and a blow to the CBN’s efforts to introduce a new naira design.

The CBN had argued that the redesigning of the naira notes was necessary to address issues of counterfeiting, terrorism, kidnapping and money laundering.
The court’s decision has been met with mixed reactions, with some hailing it as a victory for democracy, while others expressed concern about its impact on the economy.

Votes From Southeast, South South Cannot Make Peter Obi President – Atiku

Atiku And Obi

The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar has expressed pain over the loss of the Southeast and South South votes in the last Saturday, February 25 Presidential election.
He accused the candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi of taking away from him, the region that had been his traditional catchment area before this year’s election.
Answering reporters’ questions yesterday at the world press conference in Abuja, Atiku reminded Peter Obi that he can ever be President even if he wins the whole Southeast and South South.
“Winning election in the Southeast and the South South cannot make Peter Obi President.

“To be president of Nigeria, you need to win election across the country: Northeast, Northwest, North Central, as well as South South, Southwest, South South and Southeast.”
He complained that Peter Obi left PDP and joined Labour Part with no traceable unpleasant reason other than the fact that he wanted to be President of Nigeria.
Atiku said that with the Presidential election over, his doors and that of the PDP are opened for possible talk of alliance with Obi and his party to challenge the electoral process that brought in Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as President-elect under the umbrella of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Nigeria Zooms Into Final Of The FIFA Under-20 World Cup

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles has beaten Uganda by a lone goal in Ismailia in the second quarter-final to teach the final in the 17th Africa U20 Cup of Nations in Egypt.

As early as the 10th minute, Goalkeeper Chijioke Aniagboso, had to enact a reflex save to stop a bullet header from a corner kick.

Both teams continued to frisk for opportunities with Nigeria’s Ibrahim Muhammad and Haliru Sarki probing deep but undone mostly by inaccurate passes and poor ball-holding in the final quarter.

However, on the dot of half hour, Ibrahim Muhammad, who scored one of the goals that sank Mozambique on the final day of Group A attrition, latched onto a long ball from the defence, controlled well and fired.

His effort saw the ball hit the upright, and in his confusion, defender Ibrahim Juma helped the ball into his own net for the only goal of the match.

Muhammad should have made it two to purchase a cruise for Nigeria only four minutes after the restart, but he put too much power behind his turn and shot.

On the hour mark and seven minutes after, Aniagboso saved point-blank efforts that sustained Nigeria’s lead, and in the 80th minute, Samson Lawal spun the ball away from goal from a 22 -yard free-kick.

Victory earned Nigeria a slot in Monday’s semi-finals as well as a ticket to Indonesia.

The Flying Eagles will take on the winner of the clash between Congo and Tunisia, happening at the Cairo International Stadium tomorrow, March 3..

Presidential Poll: Fayose Asks Atiku, PDP To Accept Defeat, Resigns From Party

Ayodele Fayose

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has asked the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Saturday, February 25 Presidential election, Atiku Abubakar, to accept defeat at the election that had just been concluded.

Fayose also announced his resignation from the party during an interview on ARISE TV, accusing Atiku and the PDP of sponsoring protests against the outcome of the election.

Fayose said: “from today, I stay off PDP. Let me put it this way, in party politics. Because there are certain facts. I am 62. I say it here from today; I step aside because I must be talking like a leader in this country.

He added, “This Ayu was the one who led Atiku to the gutters. They took him to the gutters. You see when a man cannot come out. At 80 what does he want to do after?”

“I had issued on my Twitter handle even in the month of January or December, I warned the PDP about this problem. if not resolved (it) will consume this party. I told them there is danger ahead. Watch it.

“I was invited by His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar, to a hotel in Lagos. I told him four things; that there were four demands they made of you. One, you are 76 as of last year. The G-5 said, you are already a candidate, you can’t abort a child that has been given birth to.

“But let us go back and tell the Southerners that you will spend four years so that it would not look like it will be eight years back to back for the North because Buhari is leaving and he is representing the North irrespective of the party.

“They told his Excellency to make his official announcement, not that he should hand it over to any member of the G-5; that you are going to spend four years and at that time you will be 80 years. All the people surrounding him disagree that they can’t say such (and that) when he becomes President he will say it. Who does that?”

I’ve Succeeded In Laying Foundation For Strong, Prosperous Nigeria – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that his government has successfully laid the foundation for strong and prosperous Nigeria through Economic Recovery and Growth Plan.

The President, who commissioned the Maiduguri Emergency Power Project today, March 2, constructed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), described the commissioning as another testament towards achieving stable, uninterrupted power supply aimed at improving the economy and lives of Nigerians.

The gas plant is expected to supply 50 megawatts of electricity to Maiduguri and environs.

President Buhari said that his government has worked hard to fulfill the promise of tackling the nation’s electricity challenges and has succeeded in laying the foundation for a strong, prosperous country through the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan.

According to the President, a key execution priority of the ERGP is to ensure national energy sufficiency for Nigerians.

“The Maiduguri Emergency Power Project is part of an incremental 4,000MW of power generating assets that this administration embarked upon to improve national power supply and stimulate economic growth.

“The aggressive project strategy deployed to complete this project on schedule is a total reflection of Federal Government sensitivities in identifying and easing the plight of the Nigerians; particularly those recovering from the adverse impact of the insurgency in this North-East region.

“Over the past few years, insurgents had attacked power supply lines along Maiduguri-Damaturu and Maiduguri-Damboa-Biu roads leading to acute power supply shortages to the city of Maiduguri and its environs and crippling the economic activities in the region.

“For this purposeful response, I want to commend the NNPC Ltd for following my directive to ensure the immediate restoration of reliable power supply to Maiduguri within the shortest possible time.”

President Buhari reassured Nigerians of the government’s resolve to implement programmes, particularly in the power sector, that would deepen domestic gas utilization, expand national power generation capacity, revitalizes industries and create multiple jobs for economic growth.

He directed the Ministry of Power and other relevant Agencies namely, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc, Transmission Company of Nigeria to continue to collaborate with NNPC Ltd to ensure that millions of Nigerians access affordable electricity in the short term.

He expressed confidence that the spirit of the New NNPC Ltd would continue to engender affordable energy for all Nigerians, not just for the immediate, but for the years ahead.

President Buhari, who is making his fifth visit to the State since the administration of Governor Professor Babagana Zulum, acknowledged that the Governor has kept his campaign promises to the people of the State.

He said that the governor, who is seeking a second term in office, deserves to be re-elected.

“Your Excellency, I cannot remember the number of projects I commissioned during your first tenure, these laudable projects are impressive. I thank you.

“We also acknowledge the excellent work that you have done, working closely with the Federal Government and other stakeholders, to bring back the IDPs and refugees from Cameroon and other neighboring countries. I think the Governor deserves another term.”

The President also inaugurated the dualized Ahmadu Bello Way; Shehu Sanda Kura Road; Lafiya Road and Mogoram Road; Ultra-Modern Market, Bama Road; newly constructed Staff Quarters for University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital; Hon. Muktar Betara Aliyu Cancer Centre, and the newly constructed Bolari Market Road.

Atiku Recalls With Sad Heart, His 30-Year Battle To Deepen Democracy In Nigeria

The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 25 Presidential election in Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has recalled “with a heart full of sadness,” his 30 years battle to birth and deepen democracy in Nigeria.

“It is with a heart full of sadness that I address you today. I have, in the last three decades, devoted my life to the battle to birth and deepen democracy in our country.

“It was a battle that started during the military era. It was a struggle that nearly caused me my life and that of my son, Adamu, in Kaduna.

“I survived the assassination only by the mercies and grace of God.”

Atiku, who address newsmen today, March 2, in Abuja on the conduct of the just concluded Presidential election, also recalled how he was forced into exile.

“My businesses were nearly crippled and my signature business was eventually appropriated by the maximum ruler of that era. My commitment to enthroning democracy ensured that I joined forces with other compatriots.

“As a leader of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP), we fought and won the 1993 presidential election, which was acclaimed as the fairest and freest election in our history. Sadly, Chief MKO Abiola, who embodied that hope for the birth of a new Nigeria, paid the ultimate price.”

Atiku said that his fight to enthrone democracy led to the birth of the Peoples Democratic Party which was to force the exit of the military from government and their permanent return to the military barracks.

According to him, ollowing the exit of the military and the advent of democratic rule  in 1999, “I did not rest on my oars. I deployed the same level of commitment to advance and deepen our democracy. I did this because our democracy was bought at a huge price of human lives. My mentor and true Nigerian hero, who this venue in which we are gathered this evening is named for, was one of those who paid the ultimate price in that battle. So, also was Chief Alfred Rewane, Chief MKO Abiola and his dear wife, Chief (Mrs) Kudirat Abiola.

“It was also for this reason that I sacrificed my political aspiration and fought against the actualisation of Third Term. Whether during the military or civilian era, I have, no matter how inconvenient, pitched my tent with the people against dictators.

“During the military regime, it nearly cost me my life and the near decimation of my businesses. In the civilian administration, it had serious adverse implications on my political life.

“But I have remained undaunted because I was, and still convinced, that the only reason why I am in politics is to work in tandem with other compatriots in the advancement of the wellbeing of the people.”

Atiku spoke on the 2023 presidential election, which he said, presented Nigeria and its people the greatest opportunity for a reset. He said that the country have everything going for it, saying that this included a legal framework in the 2022 Electoral Act and the BVAS technology.

“The enthusiasm of Nigerians to turn out and in large numbers was an added bonus.

“However, the dreams and aspirations of Nigerians who braced all the challenges to go and cast their votes on Saturday, 25th of February, 2023, were shattered by the conduct of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which failed to live up to expectations.

“The weekend election was neither free nor fair. Preliminary assessments indicate that it is the worst conducted elections since the return to democratic rule.

“The manipulation and fraud that attended this election was unprecedented in the history of our nation.

“I can still not understand why the electoral umpire was in such a hurry to conclude collation and announcement of the result, given the number of complaints of irregularities of bypassing of the BVAS, failure of uploading to the IREV, and unprecedented cancellations and disenfranchisement of millions of voters in breach of the Electoral Act and the commission’s own guidelines. It was indeed a rape of democracy.

“Having consulted with leaders of our party and Nigerians from different walks of life, I have come to the conclusion that the processes and outcome of the Presidential and National Assembly election of last Saturday was grossly flawed in every material particular, and as such must be challenged.

“This has been attested to by both local and international observers. I want to believe that this was not the legacy that President Muhammadu Buhari had promised.

“For President Buhari, it is not too late to make amends for the good of our country and the future generations and indeed to assure his legacy.

“This battle to right the wrongs of Saturday is not about me. It is a continuation of my battles to deepen democracy and for a better life for our people. It is about the future of Nigerian youths.

“I know that Nigerians, especially the youth, are traumatized by the developments, but I want to urge them to conduct themselves peacefully.

“Like I have done over the years, I assure you that I will commit the rest of my life in ensuring that true democracy, which affirms the supremacy of your votes and your will, will take firm footing and guarantee a stable, prosperous and peaceful Nigeria. This is more so as Nigeria represents the hope of Africa and the Black World.

“It is my hope that the judiciary will redeem itself this time around and rise to the society’s expectation as the last HOPE. In the end, who wins is not as important as the credibility of our elections and electoral processes.

“I call on all men and women of goodwill to join hands with us in the vanguard to defend our constitution from the brigandage of anti democratic forces. Finally I urge Nigerians to remain vigilant and resolute. You have the constitutionally guaranteed right of freedom to choose your leaders. We will not sit idly by and watch your rights taken from you.

“Your voices will be heard.”

You Didn’t Win Presidential Poll, Tinubu Tells Peter Obi; Says “I’ll Meet You In Court”

The President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), in the February 25 Presidential election in the country, Peter Obi did not and could not have won the election.

Responding to Peter Obi who said that he would go to court to reclaim the mandate Nigerians gave him in the concluded Presidential election, described Obi’s statement at the press conference he held today as “very weird and wild claims” about the outcome of the election.

In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Director, Media & Publicity of the  APC Presidential Campaign Council, Tinubu said that his team welcome the decision of Obi to seek redress in court as an aggrieved party.

“Going to court is part of the electoral process and it is the most decent, statesmanlike and civilized course of action to take. We salute the decision. It is surely better than calling supporters to the streets and instigating social unrest.”

The statement said that, it is not true that the election was not free and fair, adding that it was one of the most transparent and peaceful elections in the history of Nigeria.

“It is because the process was credible that made it possible for Mr. Obi’s Labour Party to record the over six million votes it got contrary to pre-election forecast.

That Labour Party and Mr. Obi surprised bookmakers by winning in Lagos State, Nasarawa, Plateau,  Delta and Edo where there are sitting governors of either  the All Progressives Congress or the Peoples Democratic Party. Those governors have entrenched political machinery.

“That Obi won  attests to the credibility of the election process. In those states, most of the sitting governors contested election to go to the Senate and lost to little known  candidates of Labour Party.

“The Labour Party also swept the entire five South East states under the control of either APGA, PDP or APC.

“We believe that the Labour Party Presidential Candidate contradicted  himself and exposed himself to public ridicule  by suggesting that the election was only credible in states and places his party won.

“We need us to forewarn Mr. Obi, that when he gets to court he should be prepared to tell the world how his party won over 90% of votes in his region of South East while other parties got almost nothing. We have evidence of voters suppression, intimidation and harassment in South East  especially of those who came out to vote for our party.

“Also when Mr. Obi gets to court, he will have to convince the court with his allegation of rigging in over 40,000 polling units across the country especially in North West and North East where his party had no party agents and did not  sign result sheets as required by law. It is our assumption that Labour Party will enlist  PDP agents to prove its fraud claims since it is an affiliate of PDP.

“We want to state again for the umpteenth time that Mr. Obi didn’t win the presidential election and could not have won under any circumstances. This is because he had no path to winning a national election in a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society like Nigeria where a candidate running in a national election must appeal to the cross-section of our pluralistic society.

“Mr. Obi anchored his presidential campaign on the failed strategy of ethnicity and religion, the divisive and dangerous politics that has hobbled the progress of our country for decades.

“Nigerians simply rejected an ethnic and religious bigot through their ballots.

“Mr. Obi all through his campaign presented himself as the candidate of the Christians and the Church, who wanted to help ‘take back their country” from the Nigerian Muslims.

“His campaign also ran on the engine of ethnicity, inflaming strong Igbo sentiments. He also sought to cash in on the supposed youth discontent in Nigeria, as  fuelled by the ENDSARS protest in 2020.

“While Labour Party positioned its candidate as the harvester  of the youth votes, its planners forgot that Nigeria does not have a homogeneous and monolithic youth population that can deliver bloc vote to any candidate.

“All the major parties that contested the election also have strong youth appeal and supporters.

“The lesson in Mr. Obi’s defeat in the election is that no politician in Nigeria can win a presidential race by being a sectional and an anointed candidate of any religion.

“God created our country in a way to make it impossible for any part of the country to exist without the other. The framers of our constitution also worked to bind our country together with provisions that will make it impossible for a section of the country and any religion to have political domination over the other.

“What this means is that any aspiring politician for the presidency of Nigeria must have a Pan Nigeria appeal and strong support and must be embraced by adherents of other religions.

“Mr. Obi and his party knew why they failed. They knew they had no  path to victory with their negative and dangerous campaign.

“We owe Labour Party and Peter Obi the blunt truth: They failed in the election. No amount of red-herring and misinformation about the election and the outcome can  obliterate this reality.

“The President-Elect who was the candidate of our party won a Pan Nigeria  mandate in a free, fair and credible election.

“He is ready and prepared to assume office so he can serve the people of our country with sincerity and honour.”
