2023: AU Devt. Agency Charges Nigeria on Violence-free Elections

A continental body, AFRICAN Union Development Agency, AUDA-NEPAD, has urged Nigeria to conduct violent-free elections in 2023.

The national Coordinator/Chief Executive Officer of AUDA-NEPAD, disclosed this in Abuja, today, 26 2022 while interacting with journalists.

According to her, the agency had begun the implementation of a national action plan on violence free election across the six political zone.

She said: “Buhari has promised free election, we should all support him. We have no other country except Nigeria.

“Do not allow personal interest or quest for whatever that won’t support the peace of this country to come to play during the 2023 election.

“Therefore, we need to join hands to campaign for violence-free elections.”

Akobundu added that the expectation of the agency was that the media would act professionally to avert breach of peace through their reportage before, during and after next year’s general election

Consequently, she admonished journalists to report the truth concerning the elections.

The AUDA-NEPAD boss also observed that as part of the organisation’s mandate, it would support the president’s vision of pulling 100 million poor Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years.

She, however, said limited resources, especially funding has been a serious challenge as more Nigerians continue to fall below the poverty line.

Army Go Offensive, Kill Over 100 ISWAP/Boko Haram Fighters In Borno

Reports reaching us in Greenbarge Reporters online newspaper said that multiple airstrikes by Nigerian Air Force fighter jets have killed several Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State with the possibility of having eliminated two of their leaders.

In a statement issued on Sunday 25, 2022 in Abuja by the Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF Headquarters, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet said that the terrorists were neutralized after intelligence revealed that they had assembled at Mantari village in Gezuwa general area, Bama Local Government Area of Borno.

He said that among those neutralised were terrorist kingpins Khalid Tukur, Maimusari, and Bakura Jega.

Gabkwet said that the attack followed intelligence report that a Boko Haram terrorist commander, known as Ikirima had moved to Mantari village with his gun trucks, and was joined by terrorists on motorcycles from other locations.

“Subsequently, the authorisation for an air strike was given leading to the elimination of several of the terrorists and structures in the area.

“After the first wave of air strikes, some surviving terrorists found their way back to the same location to evacuate the bodies of those neutralised in the air strike.

“This provided an opportunity for a follow-up strike on the same location which has been confirmed very successful as over 100 terrorists were neutralised with dozens said to be in critical condition.“

Gabkwet said that ISWAP and Boko Haram elements had perfected plans to resume active hostilities in the wake of the Yuletide and forthcoming general elections.

“The timely intelligence received on their plans especially, their attempt to attack soft targets in Bama thus helped in the successful air strikes which has reduced their will to regroup and attack innocent citizens.

“There is no doubt that the progress and gains being made especially, by the air and ground troops has greatly contained an upsurge of terrorists’ campaigns within the North-East zone in recent times.

“Both air and ground troops have however been cautioned on the need to remain focused on the end state,“he said.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and the Chief of Air Staff (CAS) have both commended their efforts and other security agencies under OPHK for the tremendous achievements being recorded in the theatre.

According to them, there has been a lot of improvement in the security situation in the region due to the ongoing operations.

The duo, however, urged the troops to continue to give in their best towards ensuring that the region was completely rid of all terrorists.

They also paid special tribute to those who have paid the supreme sacrifice in the fight against terrorism and insurgency while commending the commitment and uncommon sacrifices of the troops as peace gradually returns to Borno.

While wishing them a merry Christmas, the service Chiefs extended the appreciation of President Muhammadu Buhari and all Nigerians to the troops for their sacrifices and efforts.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that yuletide lunch between the service Chiefs and frontline troops has become a periodic routine aimed at enhancing camaraderie among troops and boosting their morale.

Looming Strike: NAN MD Set Up Joint Management-Union Committee On Workers’ Welfare

The Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Buki Ponle, has set up a joint management-union committee to address the issue of workers’ welfare.

This is coming on the heels of a seven-day ultimatum which the staff of the Agency issued to the management to provide them some end-of-the-year package, including rice.

Reacting to the letter from the Joint Union of the Agency, the Managing Director said that the the management

is conscious of the reality of the prevailing times and is ever determined to give succour to its members of staff where possible.

In a statement today, December 24, in Abuja, Ponle cautioned members of staff to always explore peaceful arbitration and resolutions of issues rather than resort to threats.

“Unfortunately, management’s inability to provide immediate relief to cushion the adverse effects of the prevailing economic situation gives the impression that management is rather aloof and uncaring. That is untrue.

“In view of the letter received from the Joint Union, management is setting up a joint Management-Union Committee to peruse the agency’s funds and finances and recommend ways to meet the expectations of union members.

“I hope at the end of the exercise we would have an amicable resolution of all the issues raised.

”Rest assured that management will support recommendations that will enhance staff welfare, for as long as it is reasonable and practical.”

Ponle recalled that when he assumed office in September 2020, his priority was to assiduously work to improve the welfare of members of staff.

“This was especially in the area of welfare package and review of the NAN Act.

“Although this has not yielded fruition, rigorous efforts are ongoing to make it a reality.

”In all modesty, we have been able to provide enhanced welfare in staff training, supply of equipment, office renovation, and the yearly promotion of deserving officers with full benefits paid.

”Management had consistently interfaced with the unions on the imperative of adequate funding of the Agency to meet its mandates and varied obligations.”

According to him, the joint unions of the agency have always been carried along through hybrid meetings and consultations while workers are briefed periodically on issues and concerns in the Agency.

”For instance, three foreign offices in Ethiopia , South Africa, and Cote D’ivoire are slated for reopening while the six-zonal structure will be increased to 12 in 2023.

”If we have not been able to meet certain obligations in recent times, it is not deliberate as we are still awaiting releases of monthly subvention.”

Buhari Describes Those Who Try To Intimidate Him In Office As “Clever By Half”

“There are people around that think that they can intimidate me to get what they want instead of going through certain systems to earn whatever they want to earn. And they are the same people who want to be clever by half.”
These were the words of President Muhammadu Buhari at a special event put together by his family and close associates to mark his 80th birthday. The event held last night, December 23, at the Presidential villa, Abuja.
The President opened up on the rumour that went round a couple of years ago that he was a person from Sudan, saying that he heard all that story.
“Yes! People said I am somebody from Sudan. I didn’t bother with the name. Some Nigerians have mischievous ways of explaining themselves.
“No. It is not funny because those who made those statements, they just want to be cheeky.
“They want to distract attention from the main issue. Our main issue is to do the infrastructure, make people aware that they need to work hard to live well; they just enjoy life without earning the respect of their community and so on.”
Buhari, who leaves office early next year after eight years as President, said that he would not miss much.
“I wonder if I am going to miss much. I think I’m being harassed. I believe I’m trying my best but still my best is not good enough.”
The President stressed that he is not bothered by criticisms, most of which are wild and unfounded, insisting that he would continue to do his best in service to Nigeria.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo described the Nigerian leader as a forthright, good and kind man, as well as an exemplary leader.
He praised President Buhari for leading the nation with great courage, determination and commitment.
“I invite your excellences, ladies and gentlemen, to join me in proposing this toast to an exemplary leader, a forthright and honest man, a good and kind man, and a man who has led this country with great courage, determination and commitment for so many years.
“We pray that the almighty God will preserve his life for very many years to come and that he will live all of these many years in good health, peace, joy and with the love of all of our countrymen.”
Also eulogizing the President, Senator Ibikunle Amosun described the President as a man with an impeccable character and somebody that loves Nigeria..
“He is a man whom all of us; even his adversaries will agree that this is a man with a flawless character, a man with a good heart, very compassionate, very committed and a good listener.
“Somebody that loves his family, Nigeria; he is a nationalist. President Muhammadu Buhari will always think about others. In his own little way and even in his humorous way, he will always not just think about himself. He is somebody tha is not bothered about all these worldly things he is already a contented human being.”
Similarly, Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi described President Buhari as a detribalized person that means well for Nigeria.
“Let me say here that the President is a very highly detribalized personality. He is a man that loves this nation. Every time you meet him, he laments about the level of patriotism of our people. You will see a man that has passion for the people of this country, a man that loves every section of this country.”
The Governor used the occasion to thank President Buhari for completing the second Niger bridge, which is now facilitating the movement of people and goods to the Eastern part of the country this yuletide season.
Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who also graced the occasion, thanked President Buhari for sacrificing a lot for the progress of Nigeria.
He said: “You have been at the helm of the affairs of this country at a critical time. We have seen a life of commitment, dedication, patriotism and honesty. Mr President, you have done well for your country. Our nation has seen the difference, the leadership that you demonstrate.”
The President’s eldest daughter, Fatima Buhari, who spoke on behalf of her siblings and the entire family, used the occasion to thank her father for investing in their future by giving them the needed training and caring for their wellbeing.
“We are deeply honoured to be here celebrating the 80th birthday of our beloved father. I thank almighty Allah for his mercy and grace, for giving our beloved father long life and good health.
“Baba is someone who money cannot buy. That is one thing we know and he taught us that. He taught us humility, loyalty, integrity, dignity and honesty and he has a very good sense of humour. He gave us everything a parent will give his child; love, care, good education, shelter and many more.”
There were goodwill messages from traditional rulers, who all eulogized President Buhari as a man of integrity and a huge sense of humour.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, led other members of the President’s cabinet as they presented a giant birthday card, as they rejoiced with him on his 80th birthday.
Governors who also graced the occasion were Aminu Masari of Katsina State, Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi and Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State.
At the event, a documentary was aired on the life of President Buhari from childhood.

As I Prepare To Leave, I Will Fondly Remember Christians As My Friendly Neighbours – Buhari

President Buhari receives in audience Leadership of Christian faith in State House

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that one of the things he would continue to cherish and value when he leaves office for the next President, is his friendly relationship with Christians in the country.
“For me and my family, this year’s celebration is unique. It is my last as your elected President. “Twenty-two weeks from now, this administration will hand over to another.
“In the last seven years, I have had the privilege of receiving members of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) community on Christmas homage, except the year the COVID-19 pandemic denied us that opportunity.
“I will fondly remember them as my benevolent landlords and friendly neighbours.”
In a message today, December 24, to mark Christmas which comes up tomorrow, December 25, President Buhari said that it is “crucial that I remember this about my closest neighbours because there is no better way for us to celebrate Christmas as a people than showing genuine love, care, compassion and empathy for one another.”
In the message which he personally issued, the President stressed that we must never lose sight of the symbiotic relationship between Christmas and hope, which he said is made up of “Jesus Christ and humility, Christianity and grace.”
“In this season of love, joy and peace, let us not fail to remember those who really wish to celebrate but are constrained in one way or the other by reaching out to them.
“Together we can make this celebration a spectacular one by renewing our pledge and common resolve to work for the unity and prosperity of our dear country.”
President Buhari made it clear that until his last day in office, he would continue to provide political and material support to sub-national governments, the Armed Forces, institutions and individuals working wholeheartedly for the peace, unity, stability and progress of Nigeria.
He said that the advances his government had made so far on the economic front, especially in infrastructure; food security, anti-corruption, security, energy sufficiency, among others, would need to be built on.
“This joyous season has coincided with the period of campaigns to usher in a new administration. I urge you to be circumspect and vote for those that will maintain the momentum we have created for the greater good of the country.
“It is another opportunity to show the rest of the world that Nigeria is indeed ready to consolidate its democratic credentials as has been noted in international circles. Let the peace and joy that pervade this period continue well into the new year up to the elections in February and beyond.
“I want to assure Nigerians that those who violently seek to disrupt the peace of our nation have lost the battle.
“Our country is blessed with a wealth of human and material resources. Let’s celebrate our blessings this season with the trust that a better dawn awaits Nigeria.
“I wish you all a Merry Christmas.”

2023 Elections: INEC Declares Anambra State Possible “Danger Zone”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has declared Anambra State a possible “danger zone,” expressing doubts over the conduct of elections in some parts of the state in the 2023 general polls as a result of the activities of gunmen in the state.

The state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Elizabeth Agwu, at a meeting with stakeholders at the INEC Secretariat in Awka, said that about seven local government areas of the Anambra South Senatorial District are the most dangerous.

Elizabeth Agwu said that it was high time the youths in Anambra State took possession of their land and rid it of criminal elements.

She said that insecurity in the South-East is caused by indigenes and not imported persons, adding that the commission is determined to hold a free, fair and credible election in 2023, adding that all votes must count.

“This is the time for the youths to rise up in different communities to protect their people. We have prepared for the elections with materials and men. What we need from communities is to collect their Permanent Voters Cards and security. None sensible materials have been distributed already.

“Anything done that will make elections not successful in Anambra South should be resisted. Anyone caught doing abnormal things during the election will not be alive to tell the story.

“I am relying on the president general in all the communities and traditional rulers to secure their areas during the elections. Let us avoid suppressing ourselves.

“Voter education concerns and affects everyone in this country. There are so many ways it affects us, but the problem we have here is our penchant for pursuing money.”

She said that the purpose of the meeting was about voter education and a review of the security situation in the state prior to the general elections next year.

During the meeting, some stakeholders reported that some yet-to-be-identified assailants set ablaze buildings belonging to prominent individuals in the area, including that of a monarch, few days ago.

The President-General, Osumoghu Community in Nnewi South Local Government Area, Dennis Muomaife, who was at the stakeholders’ meeting informed the participants that two of his buildings were burnt two weeks ago by unknown persons.

“Not only that, the house of the traditional ruler of the community and that of the deputy speaker of the state House of Assembly representing Ihiala 2 Constituency were equally set ablaze.”

He said that his community had set up a peace and reconciliation committee in making sure that such issues were tackled in less than no time, adding “we are really doing something.”

We’ll Make Sure Agitation For Yoruba Nation In Southwest Fails, Gov Akeredolu Vows

The chairman of the Southern Governors Forum who doubles as Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has vowed to make sure that agitation for a Yoruba nation by some groups in the Southwest, does not succeed as it seeks to thwart the efforts of those who had laid their lives for the unity of Nigeria.

Governor Akeredolu, who spoke today, December 23, while inaugurating the emblem appeal to flag off the 2023 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebrations in Akure, the state capital, made it clear that no state in the Southwest region would allow any agitation that would scuttle the sacrifices of the nation’s heroes.

“Those are clamouring for Oodua Nation will not succeed. People have not laid down their lives for this country for unscrupulous individuals to scuttle it. This country is very important to some of us.

“We recognise the right of the people to protest or agitate. But if the police feel your actions are treasonable, they will arrest and prosecute you. It is not at this stage in the history of this country that we will repeat IPOB in Yoruba land. Opportunity beacons at us. We cannot afford to throw away that opportunity.

“We must work to ensure that there is power shift. The opportunity for presidency to come to the south, especially the Southwest, is around the corner. We will not sit down and support anyone clamouring for Oodua nation. We will not support it. We have fought for this with everything we had. Nigeria will be good.

“The security agencies will checkmate these unscrupulous enemies embarking on such frivolous activities. We have responsibilities now to soberly reflect on the plight of those who have laid down their lives and those who are still laying down their lives for the unity and peace of this country.”

According to the governor, the current daring posture of the enemies of the country, which has cost the nation the lives of many of the gallant soldiers, is highly condemnable.

He stressed that the sustained effort of the officers and men of the military had greatly checkmated the threat by the unscrupulous elements.

“Without the sacrifice and commitment of these officers and men of the Armed Forces, it would have been a matter of time before the whole country is overrun.

“The month-long armed forces remembrance day celebration is, therefore, a golden opportunity for government and the society at large to empathise and associate with widows and relations of our fallen heroes, especially those that were cut down in their prime.

“The onus is on us to soberly reflect on the plight of these categories of people and resolve to ensure that they live socially acceptable lives. It should be noted that the major reason for the Emblem Appeal Fund is to provide financial and material support to families of the fallen heroes as well as veterans who survived various military operations with some sustaining varying degrees of injuries that had rendered them incapacitated.

“There is nothing too good or too much that we can offer that could replace the precious lives lost or remedy the deprivations and untold hardship suffered by the dependants of these heroes. We must, however, at all times and at every opportunity, give our financial and moral support so that those still alive and serving will be encouraged to give their best in the service of our dear fatherland.”

Governor Akeredolu enjoined all local government councils to celebrate the 2023 Armed Forces Remembrance Day by purchasing and selling the emblems and equally donating generously to the cause.

Shell Agrees To Pay $15.9 Million To Nigerian Communities Affected By Oil Spills

The Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) has agreed to pay $15.9 million in compensation to communities in Nigeria impacted by four oil spills that occurred from its pipelines in the Niger Delta between 2004 and 2007.

A statement from the Company today, December 23, said: “under the settlement, the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SDC) as operator of the SPDC joint venture will pay an amount of $15.9 million for the benefit of the communities and the individual claimants.”

The settlement comes following a years-long legal battle first filed in 2008 by four Nigerian farmers and Milieudefensie, the Dutch division of Friends of the Earth International.

That ended with a historic ruling in 2021 by The Hague Court of Appeal that found Shell’s Nigeria subsidiary SPDC liable for pollution caused from four oil pipeline leaks in the Niger Delta.

The settlement will go toward the affected Ikot Ada Udo, Oruma and Goi communities, as well as the families of the four farmers that brought the case – Baariza Dooh, Elder Akpan, Chief Fidelis Oguru and Alai Efanga.

In the statement, the son of Chief Barizaa Dooh, who died after the case was first filed, Eric Dooh, expressed gratitude for the compensation, saying: “we can build up our community once again. We can start to re-invest in our living environment.”

The Niger Delta, which is home to  6.5 million people, is one of the most polluted places on earth, with oil spills bringing devastating impacts on the environment and surrounding communities. According to the Nigeria’s National Oil Spill Detention and Response Agency, there have been 246,000 liters of oil spilled from January to March 2022, and 75% of the spills are attributed to theft, sabotage or by organized crime groups and militants, according to the Institute for Security Studies..

Shell maintains that the four spills were a result of sabotage, adding that the settlement is “not an admission of liability basis, and settles all claims and ends all pending litigation related to the spills.”

Leak detection systems on 20 pipeline segments have also been installed by the multinational corporation, in accordance to the ruling by The Hague Court of Appeal.

“If we look at the court case as a whole, the major gain is that a new standard has been set: companies will no longer be able to get away with pollution and ignoring human rights, said Milieudefensie’s director, Donald Pols, in a statement.

Buhari Suggests Public Complaints Commission To Handle Whistleblowing Policy

President Muhammadu Buhari has made a suggestion that the Public Complaints Commission (PCC) should be the best Agency to domicile the whistleblowing policy of the Federal Government.

The President was responding to requests by the Chief Commissioner of the Commission, Abimbola Ayo-Yusuf and members of the Management team during a courtesy visit at the Presidential villa, Abuja today, December 23.

The President said: ‘‘I want to assure you that the Commission would be considered as the Agency where the policy will be domiciled given your widespread network of offices and the fact that your mandate on referral of complaints with criminal contents to appropriate Law Enforcement Agencies make your Commission the best suited Agency for domiciling whistleblowing policy of the Federal Government.”

He thanked the Commission for conferring on him, the award of the GRAND OMBUDSMAN OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA, even as he pledged to continue to do his best in expanding the frontiers of anti-corruption, rule of law and good governance in Nigeria.

The President also promised speedy consideration of the Commission’s application to own a radio station to facilitate dissemination of its activities to the citizenry and to enhance its public enlightenment programmes.

On the 2023 elections and the need to protect the will of Nigerians, President Buhari urged the Commission to use their privileged position and network of numerous offices in all the States of the Federation and presence in many Local Government Areas to protect the interest of the down- trodden and sensitize the citizenry on their rights and obligations.

He underscored the role of the Commission in ensuring free, fair and credible elections and a smooth democratic transition and transfer of power in 2023.

‘‘The Public Complaints Commission is an Ombudsman Institution set up in 1975. The reason for its establishment by its founding fathers was to bridge the gap between the government and the governed and between the big man and the little man.

‘‘It was designed to act as a bastion of justice for the ‘little man’ who has no one or place to turn to for relief, just as it was conceived by the Swedes who originated it.

‘‘The mandate of the Commission is to principally attend to complaints by members of the public concerning the administrative action of any authority and companies or their officials.

‘‘This fits into this Administration’s policies of restoring transparency, accountability and zero tolerance for Corruption and all forms of administrative injustice.

‘‘I therefore promise to assist the Commission to provide the needed tools and infrastructure to strengthen and empower it to perform effectively’’.

On the honorary award presented to the President, Hon, Ayo-Yusuf praised President Buhari for releasing all outstanding pension liabilities, from 2014, to retirees of the Federal Government, especially those of the treasury-funded Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs), under the contributory pension scheme.

He added that the President also approved the payment of backlog of death benefits due to beneficiaries of deceased employees of MDAs.

Ayo-Yusuf also highlighted the President’s approval for payment of the 13 percent derivation deductions, for the nine oil producing states of the Federation, which has been outstanding since 1999.

‘‘Your excellency, these life-changing approvals are unprecedented in the history of governance in this country, hence, as a Commission with the responsibility to arbitrate and resolve public concerns, we deeply appreciate your support so far in solving the most sensitive issues that had bedeviled the Commission for a long time,’’ he said.

The Chief Commissioner also told the President that between July 1, 2021 when he assumed office with his colleagues and November 2022, a total of 125,064 out of 173,500 complaints have been resolved.

He said the complaints came mainly from the Nigerian work force and the downtrodden who ordinarily could not afford the cost of justice in the Nigerian Judicial System.

Making the case to become the hub of the whistleblowing policy and provide confidentiality for whistleblowers, Ayo-Yusuf said the Commission has over the years served as Chair of the Interagency Task Team on Anti-Corruption.

“We are able to secretly receive, investigate, process and refer cases from whistleblowers to relevant agencies for further investigation and prosecution while protecting the whistleblower.”
