The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for keeping to his promise on completing the Second Niger Bridge before the expiration of his tenure.

In statement today, December 16 by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Alex Ogbonnia, Ohanaeze said: “several administrations had used the second Niger Bridge as a bait on the Igbo, especially during political campaigns. When President Buhari promised that he will complete the second Niger Bridge, not many believed, especially when he could not conceal his lopsided political appointments and other resource allocations against the South-East.

“On assumption of office as the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide,  Ambassador Professor George Obiozor in company of several APC government officials on February 6, 2021, visited the site wherein he remarked that the ‘people of the South-East would continue to be grateful to the present Federal Government for hearkening to the needs of the Ndigbo.”

The statement partly read, “Based on the general clamour for a Second Niger Bridge, the former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, in 1992, challenged the Nigerian engineers to come up with a design of the second bridge. It was believed that upon completion, the bridge will ease traffic flow, allay fears, improve road safety and create greater road user confidence among the commuters.

“Several administrations had used the second Niger Bridge as a bait on the Igbo, especially during political campaigns. When President Buhari promised that he will complete the second Niger Bridge, not many believed, especially when he could not conceal his lopsided political appointments and other resource allocations against the South-East.

“On assumption of office as the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide,  Ambassador Professor George Obiozor in company of several APC government officials on February 6, 2021, visited the site wherein he remarked that the ‘people of the South-East would continue to be grateful to the present Federal Government for hearkening to the needs of the Ndigbo’.

“A few days ago, the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola (SAN), disclosed that the Second Niger Bridge would be open to traffic from December 15, 2022, to January 15, 2023, to ease the experience of travellers during the Yuletide break. And so, it has come.

“Surely, President Buhari did not start the work on the bridge, but in a country where the abandoned projects far outnumber the completed ones, vital infrastructure that should have been taken for granted are celebrated.

“While the Ohanaeze Ndigbo led by Obiozor immensely appreciates Mr President on the Second Niger Bridge, it is hoped that Mr. President will use the remaining few months in office to pursue some other transcendental objectives which will write his name with gold in the sands of time.”

The Second Niger Bridge has since been opened to motorists for this yuletide.

Ohanaeze described the bridge as a key national infrastructure, with immense socio-economic benefits not only for the contiguous states but for the entire nation.

It said that the clamour for a Second Niger Bridge became necessary shortly after the Nigerian Civil War.

The First Niger Bridge was inaugurated in 1965 and Nigerian war broke out in 1967. The bridge was therefore not exempted from the devastating effects.

Giving insights into the second Niger bridge, Ogbonnia said that it had been a major concern to the Igbo people for over fifty years because of two major reasons: “apart from the traffic lock jam on the bridge, the greatest fear was that the bridge had evidence of cracks such that the stress of weights on the bridge could cause collapse of all the vehicles and their contents into the river Niger with untold consequences.”

Nigeria Is Africa’s Largest Consumer Market, Amongst Others, Buhari Tells US Investors

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that Nigeria, being the Africa’s largest single market, remains the best destination for American investors to put their money

According to the President, aside the population advantage in size and demography, various incentives and policies that have been emplaced by the Nigerian Government, make it a destination of choice for investment.

Buhari spoke today, December 16, in Washington D.C, at the U.S – Nigeria Business and Investment Forum, Business Roundtable organized by the American Corporate Council on Africa (CCA) in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, on the sidelines of the US-Africa Leaders Summit.

President Buhari said: “it is imperative that I reiterate at the outset, the comparative advantages that exist within the Nigeria’s economy.

“First as the most populous country and largest economy in Africa, there is no doubt that Nigeria remains Africa’s largest single consumer market, projected to account for over 15% of overall growth in Africa’s spending, by 2025.

“Secondly, investors in the country would have access to new markets under the African Continental Free Trade Area, (AfCTA), which would be the world’s largest free trade area, would be expected to connect 1.3 billion people across 55 countries and a consumer market that will be worth over $3 trillion by 2030, and a combined Gross Domestic Product (GDP) valued at US$3.4 trillion.”

He said that since 2015 when he assumed office as President, he had embarked on fixing of the infrastructural gaps needed for business to thrive, saying that such infrastructure include roads, railways, air and sea ports, energy and telecommunications, adding that these infrastructure constituted greater priorities for Government.

He said: “related to these conscious and practical efforts, is the resolve by our Administration to improve the business environment through business incentives, regulatory reforms and visa-regime that are business-friendly.

“The outcome of the massive efforts and investments by our administration in Infrastructure Development and Refurbishment, i.e. Road Construction and Rehabilitation, Investment Tax Credit Policy, led to the reconstruction of 21 selected Federal Roads, totaling 1,804.6 KM. With regards to railways, sea and air ports as well as energy, which are expected to facilitate movements of people, goods and services as well as sustain the stabilization of industries and their growth respectively.”

President Buhari saide that despite the global challenges occasioned by COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine, the Nigerian economy has continued to record impressive growth in many sectors:

“On economy, Nigeria like other countries , including the developed economies, is facing economic challenges, occasioned by the disruptions as a result of the COVID – 19 pandemic the ongoing Ukraine war and the Climate Change, in which massive flooding is one the manifestations.

“Notwithstanding these global challenges, Nigeria had witnessed seven consecutive quarters of growth, after the negative growth rates recorded in the 2nd and 3rd Quarters of 2020. Nigeria’s GDP grew by 3.54% year-on-year in real terms in the 2nd Quarter of 2022, which represents a sustained positive economic performance, especially for the Non-Oil GDP which fell by 4.77% in Q2 2022 against Oil GDP that grew by -11.77%.

“Statistics continue to indicate that most sectors of our economy recorded positive growth despite these challenges, which reflect the effective implementation of the economic sustainability measures introduced by our Administration. For our economy to favourably meet up the global digitization, Nigeria embraced Communication and Digital Economy. Already, the broadband coverage of the country stands at 44.32% and 77.52%. 4G coverage has also been achieved, with the establishment of 36,751 4G base stations nationwide.”

Buhari gave details of the sustained efforts of his administration to reverse the pervasive state of insecurity he inherited, especially in the Northeast, even as he commended the government of the United States for the support it has rendered in this aspect.

“When our administration came to power in 2015, most of the North-East of Nigeria was under the control of Boko Haram Terrorist Group. Governance and Socio-Economic activities came to stand-still. This state of happening has today been reversed.

“Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are returning to their ancestral home-areas, rebuilt through efforts by the Borno State Government and some philanthropic individuals, to recommence their lives in relative peace. As a country and sub-region, we continue to make sustained investments and efforts to strengthen our national and sub-regional security.

“In such circumstances, Nigeria continues to treasure strong partnerships with friends and allies in our national, continental and global efforts for safety and survival.

“We thank the United States of America for her partnership and as an ally, which made it possible to acquire arms, weapons and other military hardware, which has assisted Nigeria in her efforts to contain the scourge of terrorism and maritime insecurity.”

The Nigerian leader spoke about the plans of his administration to ensure that the problem of energy supply is addressed in the immediate future.

“In the pursuit of our energy development, Nigeria remains mindful of her commitment to carbon neutrality by 2060. In this regard, our administration launched an Energy Transition Plan (ETP) in September, 2022 aimed at meeting the national energy needs, in line with Nigeria’s net zero target.

“The Energy Transition Plan is a home-grown, data-backed, multipronged strategy developed for the achievement of net-zero emissions’ reduction across five (5) key sectors; Power, Cooking, Oil and Gas, Transport and Industry. The Energy Transition Plan (ETP) is therefore, a huge investment opportunity in the gas sector.”

This was even as the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo, said that Nigeria is politically stable and ready for more investments and that the trend will continue because President Buhari has put in place electoral reforms that are enduring, giving room for free, fair and transparent elections.

In her remarks, Ms. Florie Liser, President of CCA said that the organisation has been around since 1993, promoting US and African business and investment relationships.

“Gathered here are CCA members, partners and investors that doing great works in Nigeria. They have a strong interest in sealing their operations there.”

She said that the organisation had been privileged to also host past presidents, governors, ministers and numerous private sector leaders to cement trade ties and facilitate investments between the US and Nigeria for the benefit of the people of Nigeria and American people. She described Nigeria as a priority country for the CCA.

POS Operators Protest N20,000 Cash Withdrawal Limit, Say 1.4 Million May Lose Jobs

Point of Sale ( POS) operators in Nigeria have protested the  cashless policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) ) that wants cash withdrawal limit of individuals per day to N20,000 and Corporate bodies N100, 000.

An umbrella body of the operators, Association of Mobile Money and Bank Agents in Nigeria ( AMMBAN), in a petition to President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Assembly over the planned policy, called for suspension of the policy to save 1.4 million bank agents from losing their means of livelihood.
Addressing newsmen in Abuja today, December 16, the National President of body, Victor Olojo, said that over 1.4 million people will lose their jobs if the policy is  not suspended or  reviewed upward, adding that the series of engagement with critical stakeholders would continue.

The petition, dated December 16, 2022, specifically requested an upward review of the maximum withdrawal limit to N500, 000 weekly for individuals and three million naira for corporate organisations.

Olojo said: “AMMBAN believes the cashless policy in its current state hasn’t provided for Mobile Money and Bank Agents in Nigeria adequately.

“Even as the CBN Governor made reference to the fact that Mobile Money and Bank Agents are spread across the country, which is one of the reasons why he strongly feels the country is ready for the cashless policy, the document puts the jobs of over 1.4 million agents on the line in its present state.

“This and many other germane reasons informed the decisions of the Association to engage the CBN, the National Assembly and other relevant stakeholders. This is to ensure that while we show support for the cashless policy of the government through the CBN, the policy should recognise the categorisation of Agents’ accounts as it does individuals and corporate entities.”

The group said that it had interacted with the Chairman, Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance And Other Financial Institutions, Senator Uba Sani, his counterpart in the House of Representatives, Hon. Victor Nwokolo, on the matter.

“They were all in agreement that owing to the high relevance Mobile Money and Bank Agents have in the successful implementation of the Cashless policy, there has to be Categorisation of the accounts to be able to serve the Nigeria people especially in areas where there are no banks or basic infrastructure to enhance the usage of alternative channels of transaction.

“It is worthy of note that AMMBAN and her members have always been at the forefront since the inception of the Financial Inclusion drive in ensuring the achievements of the set goals. It is strongly believed that no success story can be pointed to without the selfless efforts of agents who, against all odds, go to the creeks and hinterland in the drive to deepen financial inclusion goals as set by the CBN.”

Abdulrasheed Bawa | Credit: Punch

Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa has announced that the Commission will soon sell to interested Nigerians, over 150 forfeited houses across the country.

The sale will follow the nationwide auction of forfeited vehicles and other automobiles.

Bawa, who spoke today, December 15, at a media briefing in Abuja, as part of the highlights of the activities of the Commission for the year 2022, said that the Commission recovered over N30 billion from the suspended Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Ahmed Idris. The Commission is prosecuting the Idris over alleged N109 billion fraud.

According to the anti graft boss, over 3,615 convictions were recorded within the period under review, saying that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari has been serious about its anti-corruption fight.

Bawa assured that by the time the Special Control Unit against Money Laundering (SCMUL) becomes fully operational, it will be difficult for money to be laundered in the country.

He said that the Anti-graft agency is currently vetting petition against some Nigerian politicians, adding that the Petitions Vetting Desk/Committee of agency, made up of experienced officers from the Legal Department, as well as those trained to investigate such petitions are currently reviewing them.

Asked if it received petition against any of the presidential candidates for the 2023 elections, Bawa said: “My question at this hour is, do you want to start inviting all the presidential candidates to come and make statements? The same media will say it’s politically motivated.

“So we are not, we are not, aah, we are working behind the scene in all the petitions we received to see those that have merits, so that’s why we are not politicising it.

“And that’s why we have what we call Petitions Vetting Desk/Committee made up of experienced officers from the Legal Department as well as those trained to investigate that will review these petitions to see whether they are in line with our own mandate before they will recommend whether they will be prosecuted by the EFCC.

“We have benchmark for it that we can follow, that guides us, you know, in terms of accepting or rejecting petitions, you know, as we also have a criteria which have even been publicised to guide petitioners on the requirements to make a petition to have merit.”

Inflation Reduces Minimum Wage To N19,000, Throws 5 Million Into Poverty —World Bank

The World Bank has announced that Nigeria’s growing inflation rate has reduced the existing minimum wage by 55 percent and raised the number of poor by 5 million in 2022.

This was revealed at the Corporation’s launch of the Nigeria Development Update for December 2022 Edition, and the Country Economic Memorandum, held in Abuja today, December 15.

Nigeria’s current minimum wage is N30,000, but going by world bank estimation, it is now N19,355.

EDITORIAL: Labour’s Victory Over New Minimum Wage, Bigger Battles Ahead

World Bank revelation came the same day, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced that Nigeria’s inflation in the month of November jumped 21.47 percent, the highest peak 17 years and 10 consecutive growths in 2022.

The rising inflation, the World Bank stressed, is affecting the income of citizens with civil servants and low-income households most hit by the squeeze.

In his presentation, the Chief economist at World Bank, Nigeria branch, Alex Sienaert, said that in real value, the N30,000 minimum wage  is now worth N19,355 ($26), adding that over the past decade, macroeconomic stability has steadily deteriorated which has eroded growth potential and hindered poverty reduction goal.

He said that Nigeria has the potential and resources to accelerate growth and reduce poverty but that the current policy framework hinders prospects for economic growth and job creation, because issues around multiple exchange rates, protectionist policies, trading restrictions pose barriers.

“If structural reforms are not implemented, Nigeria’s future looks bleak, per capita income will plateau, Nigerians will not have a full time job by 2030 and if the employment rate does not improve, 23 million more Nigerians will live in extreme poverty by 2030.”

Sienaert stressed the need for reforms such as the adoption of a single and market reflective exchange rate, elimination of petrol subsidy, reducing insecurity and increasing non-oil revenues through taxes among others.

“Unlocking private investment can generate economic opportunities for Nigeria’s growing population, accelerating structural transformation and promoting the diversification of its economy.”

Yuletide: DSS Lists Dos And Don’ts For Politicians, Religious Leaders, Media, Others

Spokesperson of the DSS

Department of State Service (DSS) has come out with the list of what are expected of politicians, media practitioners, religious leaders and other stakeholders to do, as the nation matches into Christmas festivities, and as the 2023 general elections knock on the door.
In a statement today, December 15, by its spokesman, Dr. Peter Afunanya, the DSS called on citizens and residents
to be of good conduct for public peace and order.
The Service pledged to collaborate with all stakeholders to maintain law and order across the country, advising community, religious and political bodies/leaders to preach peaceful coexistence, tolerance and unity as well as enlighten their members on safety measures during and after the season.
“This becomes necessary as criminal elements may want to capitalise on the festivities to wreak havoc or harm unsuspecting members of the public.”
The Service advised political actors to carry out their campaigns devoid of rancour and that they should play the game according to the rules of engagement. “They should shun fake news, hate speech, violence and acts inimical to national security.
“In the same vein, players in the socio-economic sector are enjoined to avoid manipulative tendencies that could result in undue price hikes, artificial scarcity of products/goods and situations that may lead to heightened tensions.”
On the side of the media and other non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the Service asked them to be objective and patriotic in the discharge of their roles.
“They should understand that the practice of their trade(s) could be more result-oriented in an atmosphere of peace.
“As critical stakeholders in nation building and national security management, they need to consider Nigeria first before any other interest(s).
“To sustain national stability, the Service will continue to carryout its duties and responsibilities in line with global best practices as they affect human rights and rule of law. “This is despite calculated efforts by some interest groups to create impression that persons arrested by the Service are either not taken care of or denied access to their families and/or legal representatives.
“It is instructive to note that the Service has a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) on suspect handling. It considers this and general care of suspects sacrosanct and a priority. “This can undoubtedly be attested by those that had passed through its holding facilities.”
It said that for every suspect under its detention, the Service allows a family and/or legal representative, who fulfilled all the processes and clearance procedures, access to such a suspect.
“The public may note that the Service does not carry out illegal arrests or undertake enforced disappearances of innocent persons.
“It also does not operate illegal detention camps. Its operations and activities are rule-based and governed by transparent and accountable legal processes.
The DSS called on those who are opposed to its lawful position on issues to approach the court for redress.
“For emphasis, everyone is encouraged to live in peace and good neighbourliness but should, however, be conscious of his/her environment.
“People should desist from false and deliberate narratives and actions that may incite the populace against itself or the government.
“While the Service reiterates its partnership with sister agencies to ensure adequate security before, during and after the yuletide and election seasons, residents are advised to report any information of relevance to the appropriate security and law enforcement agencies.
“Once again, the DGSS, Alhaji Y.M Bichi, CFR, fwc, Management and Staff of the DSS wish all and sundry, fruitful and peaceful celebrations. Happy New Year in advance!”
