As I Prepare To Leave, I Will Fondly Remember Christians As My Friendly Neighbours – Buhari

President Buhari receives in audience Leadership of Christian faith in State House

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that one of the things he would continue to cherish and value when he leaves office for the next President, is his friendly relationship with Christians in the country.
“For me and my family, this year’s celebration is unique. It is my last as your elected President. “Twenty-two weeks from now, this administration will hand over to another.
“In the last seven years, I have had the privilege of receiving members of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) community on Christmas homage, except the year the COVID-19 pandemic denied us that opportunity.
“I will fondly remember them as my benevolent landlords and friendly neighbours.”
In a message today, December 24, to mark Christmas which comes up tomorrow, December 25, President Buhari said that it is “crucial that I remember this about my closest neighbours because there is no better way for us to celebrate Christmas as a people than showing genuine love, care, compassion and empathy for one another.”
In the message which he personally issued, the President stressed that we must never lose sight of the symbiotic relationship between Christmas and hope, which he said is made up of “Jesus Christ and humility, Christianity and grace.”
“In this season of love, joy and peace, let us not fail to remember those who really wish to celebrate but are constrained in one way or the other by reaching out to them.
“Together we can make this celebration a spectacular one by renewing our pledge and common resolve to work for the unity and prosperity of our dear country.”
President Buhari made it clear that until his last day in office, he would continue to provide political and material support to sub-national governments, the Armed Forces, institutions and individuals working wholeheartedly for the peace, unity, stability and progress of Nigeria.
He said that the advances his government had made so far on the economic front, especially in infrastructure; food security, anti-corruption, security, energy sufficiency, among others, would need to be built on.
“This joyous season has coincided with the period of campaigns to usher in a new administration. I urge you to be circumspect and vote for those that will maintain the momentum we have created for the greater good of the country.
“It is another opportunity to show the rest of the world that Nigeria is indeed ready to consolidate its democratic credentials as has been noted in international circles. Let the peace and joy that pervade this period continue well into the new year up to the elections in February and beyond.
“I want to assure Nigerians that those who violently seek to disrupt the peace of our nation have lost the battle.
“Our country is blessed with a wealth of human and material resources. Let’s celebrate our blessings this season with the trust that a better dawn awaits Nigeria.
“I wish you all a Merry Christmas.”

2023 Elections: INEC Declares Anambra State Possible “Danger Zone”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has declared Anambra State a possible “danger zone,” expressing doubts over the conduct of elections in some parts of the state in the 2023 general polls as a result of the activities of gunmen in the state.

The state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Elizabeth Agwu, at a meeting with stakeholders at the INEC Secretariat in Awka, said that about seven local government areas of the Anambra South Senatorial District are the most dangerous.

Elizabeth Agwu said that it was high time the youths in Anambra State took possession of their land and rid it of criminal elements.

She said that insecurity in the South-East is caused by indigenes and not imported persons, adding that the commission is determined to hold a free, fair and credible election in 2023, adding that all votes must count.

“This is the time for the youths to rise up in different communities to protect their people. We have prepared for the elections with materials and men. What we need from communities is to collect their Permanent Voters Cards and security. None sensible materials have been distributed already.

“Anything done that will make elections not successful in Anambra South should be resisted. Anyone caught doing abnormal things during the election will not be alive to tell the story.

“I am relying on the president general in all the communities and traditional rulers to secure their areas during the elections. Let us avoid suppressing ourselves.

“Voter education concerns and affects everyone in this country. There are so many ways it affects us, but the problem we have here is our penchant for pursuing money.”

She said that the purpose of the meeting was about voter education and a review of the security situation in the state prior to the general elections next year.

During the meeting, some stakeholders reported that some yet-to-be-identified assailants set ablaze buildings belonging to prominent individuals in the area, including that of a monarch, few days ago.

The President-General, Osumoghu Community in Nnewi South Local Government Area, Dennis Muomaife, who was at the stakeholders’ meeting informed the participants that two of his buildings were burnt two weeks ago by unknown persons.

“Not only that, the house of the traditional ruler of the community and that of the deputy speaker of the state House of Assembly representing Ihiala 2 Constituency were equally set ablaze.”

He said that his community had set up a peace and reconciliation committee in making sure that such issues were tackled in less than no time, adding “we are really doing something.”

We’ll Make Sure Agitation For Yoruba Nation In Southwest Fails, Gov Akeredolu Vows

The chairman of the Southern Governors Forum who doubles as Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has vowed to make sure that agitation for a Yoruba nation by some groups in the Southwest, does not succeed as it seeks to thwart the efforts of those who had laid their lives for the unity of Nigeria.

Governor Akeredolu, who spoke today, December 23, while inaugurating the emblem appeal to flag off the 2023 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebrations in Akure, the state capital, made it clear that no state in the Southwest region would allow any agitation that would scuttle the sacrifices of the nation’s heroes.

“Those are clamouring for Oodua Nation will not succeed. People have not laid down their lives for this country for unscrupulous individuals to scuttle it. This country is very important to some of us.

“We recognise the right of the people to protest or agitate. But if the police feel your actions are treasonable, they will arrest and prosecute you. It is not at this stage in the history of this country that we will repeat IPOB in Yoruba land. Opportunity beacons at us. We cannot afford to throw away that opportunity.

“We must work to ensure that there is power shift. The opportunity for presidency to come to the south, especially the Southwest, is around the corner. We will not sit down and support anyone clamouring for Oodua nation. We will not support it. We have fought for this with everything we had. Nigeria will be good.

“The security agencies will checkmate these unscrupulous enemies embarking on such frivolous activities. We have responsibilities now to soberly reflect on the plight of those who have laid down their lives and those who are still laying down their lives for the unity and peace of this country.”

According to the governor, the current daring posture of the enemies of the country, which has cost the nation the lives of many of the gallant soldiers, is highly condemnable.

He stressed that the sustained effort of the officers and men of the military had greatly checkmated the threat by the unscrupulous elements.

“Without the sacrifice and commitment of these officers and men of the Armed Forces, it would have been a matter of time before the whole country is overrun.

“The month-long armed forces remembrance day celebration is, therefore, a golden opportunity for government and the society at large to empathise and associate with widows and relations of our fallen heroes, especially those that were cut down in their prime.

“The onus is on us to soberly reflect on the plight of these categories of people and resolve to ensure that they live socially acceptable lives. It should be noted that the major reason for the Emblem Appeal Fund is to provide financial and material support to families of the fallen heroes as well as veterans who survived various military operations with some sustaining varying degrees of injuries that had rendered them incapacitated.

“There is nothing too good or too much that we can offer that could replace the precious lives lost or remedy the deprivations and untold hardship suffered by the dependants of these heroes. We must, however, at all times and at every opportunity, give our financial and moral support so that those still alive and serving will be encouraged to give their best in the service of our dear fatherland.”

Governor Akeredolu enjoined all local government councils to celebrate the 2023 Armed Forces Remembrance Day by purchasing and selling the emblems and equally donating generously to the cause.

Shell Agrees To Pay $15.9 Million To Nigerian Communities Affected By Oil Spills

The Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) has agreed to pay $15.9 million in compensation to communities in Nigeria impacted by four oil spills that occurred from its pipelines in the Niger Delta between 2004 and 2007.

A statement from the Company today, December 23, said: “under the settlement, the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SDC) as operator of the SPDC joint venture will pay an amount of $15.9 million for the benefit of the communities and the individual claimants.”

The settlement comes following a years-long legal battle first filed in 2008 by four Nigerian farmers and Milieudefensie, the Dutch division of Friends of the Earth International.

That ended with a historic ruling in 2021 by The Hague Court of Appeal that found Shell’s Nigeria subsidiary SPDC liable for pollution caused from four oil pipeline leaks in the Niger Delta.

The settlement will go toward the affected Ikot Ada Udo, Oruma and Goi communities, as well as the families of the four farmers that brought the case – Baariza Dooh, Elder Akpan, Chief Fidelis Oguru and Alai Efanga.

In the statement, the son of Chief Barizaa Dooh, who died after the case was first filed, Eric Dooh, expressed gratitude for the compensation, saying: “we can build up our community once again. We can start to re-invest in our living environment.”

The Niger Delta, which is home to  6.5 million people, is one of the most polluted places on earth, with oil spills bringing devastating impacts on the environment and surrounding communities. According to the Nigeria’s National Oil Spill Detention and Response Agency, there have been 246,000 liters of oil spilled from January to March 2022, and 75% of the spills are attributed to theft, sabotage or by organized crime groups and militants, according to the Institute for Security Studies..

Shell maintains that the four spills were a result of sabotage, adding that the settlement is “not an admission of liability basis, and settles all claims and ends all pending litigation related to the spills.”

Leak detection systems on 20 pipeline segments have also been installed by the multinational corporation, in accordance to the ruling by The Hague Court of Appeal.

“If we look at the court case as a whole, the major gain is that a new standard has been set: companies will no longer be able to get away with pollution and ignoring human rights, said Milieudefensie’s director, Donald Pols, in a statement.

Buhari Suggests Public Complaints Commission To Handle Whistleblowing Policy

President Muhammadu Buhari has made a suggestion that the Public Complaints Commission (PCC) should be the best Agency to domicile the whistleblowing policy of the Federal Government.

The President was responding to requests by the Chief Commissioner of the Commission, Abimbola Ayo-Yusuf and members of the Management team during a courtesy visit at the Presidential villa, Abuja today, December 23.

The President said: ‘‘I want to assure you that the Commission would be considered as the Agency where the policy will be domiciled given your widespread network of offices and the fact that your mandate on referral of complaints with criminal contents to appropriate Law Enforcement Agencies make your Commission the best suited Agency for domiciling whistleblowing policy of the Federal Government.”

He thanked the Commission for conferring on him, the award of the GRAND OMBUDSMAN OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA, even as he pledged to continue to do his best in expanding the frontiers of anti-corruption, rule of law and good governance in Nigeria.

The President also promised speedy consideration of the Commission’s application to own a radio station to facilitate dissemination of its activities to the citizenry and to enhance its public enlightenment programmes.

On the 2023 elections and the need to protect the will of Nigerians, President Buhari urged the Commission to use their privileged position and network of numerous offices in all the States of the Federation and presence in many Local Government Areas to protect the interest of the down- trodden and sensitize the citizenry on their rights and obligations.

He underscored the role of the Commission in ensuring free, fair and credible elections and a smooth democratic transition and transfer of power in 2023.

‘‘The Public Complaints Commission is an Ombudsman Institution set up in 1975. The reason for its establishment by its founding fathers was to bridge the gap between the government and the governed and between the big man and the little man.

‘‘It was designed to act as a bastion of justice for the ‘little man’ who has no one or place to turn to for relief, just as it was conceived by the Swedes who originated it.

‘‘The mandate of the Commission is to principally attend to complaints by members of the public concerning the administrative action of any authority and companies or their officials.

‘‘This fits into this Administration’s policies of restoring transparency, accountability and zero tolerance for Corruption and all forms of administrative injustice.

‘‘I therefore promise to assist the Commission to provide the needed tools and infrastructure to strengthen and empower it to perform effectively’’.

On the honorary award presented to the President, Hon, Ayo-Yusuf praised President Buhari for releasing all outstanding pension liabilities, from 2014, to retirees of the Federal Government, especially those of the treasury-funded Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs), under the contributory pension scheme.

He added that the President also approved the payment of backlog of death benefits due to beneficiaries of deceased employees of MDAs.

Ayo-Yusuf also highlighted the President’s approval for payment of the 13 percent derivation deductions, for the nine oil producing states of the Federation, which has been outstanding since 1999.

‘‘Your excellency, these life-changing approvals are unprecedented in the history of governance in this country, hence, as a Commission with the responsibility to arbitrate and resolve public concerns, we deeply appreciate your support so far in solving the most sensitive issues that had bedeviled the Commission for a long time,’’ he said.

The Chief Commissioner also told the President that between July 1, 2021 when he assumed office with his colleagues and November 2022, a total of 125,064 out of 173,500 complaints have been resolved.

He said the complaints came mainly from the Nigerian work force and the downtrodden who ordinarily could not afford the cost of justice in the Nigerian Judicial System.

Making the case to become the hub of the whistleblowing policy and provide confidentiality for whistleblowers, Ayo-Yusuf said the Commission has over the years served as Chair of the Interagency Task Team on Anti-Corruption.

“We are able to secretly receive, investigate, process and refer cases from whistleblowers to relevant agencies for further investigation and prosecution while protecting the whistleblower.”

Wike Shuts Down Atiku’s Campaign Office In Rivers, Says It Disturbs Neigbours With Noise

The Government of Nyeson Wike of Rivers State, has shut the campaign office of Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to which (Wike) belongs.

It was learnt that the State government sealed off the campaign office based on Executive Orders 21 and 22. The office was said to have been shut for producing noisy political activities in residential areas without approval from the State government.

The Rivers State PDP presidential campaign council, which made this known today, December 23, said that the office, located in GRA Port Harcourt, was sealed off in the early hours of today.

The PDP Presidential Campaign Council in Rivers said it had written an application seeking approval to use the office premise for its political activities.

The application had been ignored for months until the venue was sealed today, the party said.

The media team of the state’s PCC described the seal on the office as anti-democratic and a violation of free expression, even as it advised the leaders of the party in the state to seek legal redress per the provisions of the constitution.

PDP said: “The public is hereby informed that the sealed premises had no bill board or poster, since the approval had not been given, yet it was sealed off, a sign that the delay in the approval is premeditated and computed to cause this sort of unlawfulness.”

“We condemn this act because it rubs off on our fundamental right to free expression of interest. Furthermore, this egregious move by the Rivers State Government, seen in the prism of politics, tends to militarise our democracy and renders our dear state politically recessive when juxtaposed with other states in the country,” the media team said in a statement.

“We urge our dear leaders in the state to challenge this illegality in a court of competent jurisdiction so that friction can disappear from our political space.

“The right to campaign for preferred candidate is enshrined in the Constitution of Nigeria, which is the grand norm from which every other law derives its power.

“Thus, every clash between the Constitution and any other made law should be resolved in favour of the Constitution. The Rivers State Government, we dare say, is subject to the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as Amended).

“Meanwhile we charge the Rivers State PDP PCC, our dear leaders, to see to it that this unlawful disruption of campaign activities does not rattle their cage. They must continue to function as they always had prior to the existence of the Secretariat.

“It is our duty to remind Governor Wike and his co-travellers that they, like everyone else, are subject to the Laws of Nigeria.”

“Tyranny will expire in our state. If the Nazi Regime could die in Germany, then this facsimile of such will die even much faster to the glory of God and liberty of Rivers State.”

Young Nigerian Investors Confused, Angry As Crypto Collapses

Young Nigerian students who have been tapped to recruit fresh investors in West Africa for the Hong Kong/global crypto exchange AAX have expressed their anger and confusion over collapse of the Crypto. This is coming on the heels of the implosion of FTX crypto exchange.

Nigerian media outlets reported shortly after the collapse that Nigerian-based customers of AAX had “stormed the AAX Lagos offices” in a desperate search for their funds, demanding their money while “beating up the staff available.”
report had it that dozens of students in Nigeria were recruited by investor-hungry firms to market cryptocurrencies to their peers, part of an industry push to expand their reach in West Africa, where economic instability has drawn in desperate users.
Report have it that enlisted students were being made to hit monthly targets through both the number of new investors won and total funds deposited.

It was learnt that some people were paid a monthly stipend for their recruitment work; while others worked for free in the hope of earning referral commissions.
AAX student ambassadors were asked to recruit 50 users to trade USD 250 weekly on the platform, and given a monthly target of USD 50,000 in trading volume, two ambassadors said.
The exchange had recruited nearly 50 ambassadors in Nigeria as of late-2022, according to documents seen by the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
Those who met the targets were rewarded.
FTX campus ambassadors were tasked with recruiting 20 users a month to invest USD 50,000-USD 100,000 in total.
The students earned commission for every new sign on.
They coordinated and shared photos of promotional events and activities with country managers in Telegram groups. Those who met their monthly targets received an additional USD 800 in cash.
“It was always: ‘you must get 100 people, you must bring students, you must refer, you must get them to bring money,’” said Mary, 22, who joined FTX as an ambassador at the University of Nigeria, Enugu.
She asked to be identified only by her first name, for fear of retaliation.

Crypto adoption is growing in Africa, especially in Nigeria, which ranks 11th on a global ownership index compiled by research firm Chainalysis, despite an official crackdown on crypto trading in the country.
It gained wider popularity in 2020 as Nigerians at home and overseas donated thousands of dollars in bitcoin to fund youth-led protests against police brutality, boosting its use among a demography that is increasingly wary of institutional scrutiny.
But inflation, unemployment, and rising poverty have made it a lifeline for young Nigerians – who make up more than 60 percent of a population topping 220 million people – and who have turned to crypto trading and recruitment as a new way to earn a living.

Elijah was arrested briefly last month after angry investors who had parked USD 30,000 in AAX on the student’s recommendation reported him to authorities in a bid to recover their funds.
Two other AAX ambassadors said they had gone into hiding out of fear they would be harmed by investors they had recruited.
Another AAX ambassador, Abduraoff Aderonmu, was recruited at the University of Ilorin, and encouraged to meet weekly targets of finding 50 new traders.
He hosted events at his school and convinced dozens of fellow students to put thousands of dollars into the exchange.
In November, AAX blocked customer withdrawals from its platform pending a “system upgrade” it said was vital to protect users from “malicious attacks”.
“It was a planned scam from the beginning … a very well-planned robbery,” Aderonmu said.
AAX did not respond to a request for comments.

FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried is expected to appear before a U.S. court on Thursday after being extradited from The Bahamas, the first step in a possibly lengthy criminal case over the collapse of the bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange.
Bankman-Fried, 30, was arrested last week in the Bahamas, where he lived and where FTX is based. Federal prosecutors in Manhattan charged him with stealing billions of dollars in FTX customer assets to plug losses at his hedge fund, Alameda Research, cementing the one-time billionaire’s fall from grace.
He departed the Caribbean nation in FBI custody on Wednesday night. Just hours later, U.S. prosecutors said two of his closest former associates had pleaded guilty and were cooperating with their probe – a move that significantly ramped up pressure on Bankman-Fried.
The collapse of FTX triggered a knock-on effect that tanked the value of various tokens, and prompted users to withdraw from exchanges, including some in Africa.
FTX also made West Africa a particular focus of its business expansion, with founder Sam Bankman-Fried personally appealing to crypto users in the region to trade on his exchange just days before its collapse.

“The @nigimmigration has made it easy to get a new passport in just two weeks through the newly-launched special diaspora fast-track passport renewal programme.

“This programme will run from the 12 December 2022 to 31 January 2023. What’s more? You can travel to Nigeria even if your passport is expired and renew it once you arrive.

“So, if you’re looking to renew your Nigerian passport during your visit this Christmas season, here’s how: Step 1 – Register online through the online registration portal

“Log in to the passport application portal at https://t.co/OMydkRt6n0 and apply online. The application process includes making payment for your preferred passport type via approved payment platforms.

“Step 2- Visit the Diaspora Desk at any international airport in Nigeria. On arrival into Nigeria via any of the international airports in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Enugu and Port Harcourt, locate the diaspora desk and provide your application details.

“You will then be given a fast-track letter (this letter overrides the date on your online application, so no panicking) to any passport office of your choice.

“Step 3 – Capture Your biometric information. Visit your preferred passport office between Monday and Wednesday. Once you get there, your biometrics, including your photo and fingerprints, will be captured, and your passport will be produced and ready in two weeks.

“Also, note that you will need your National Identification Number (NIN) for your passport application. You are also to ensure that your personal information in the passport application matches the information on the NIN and vice versa; otherwise, the process cannot be completed.

“If you have any enquiries or complaints concerning the passport renewal process, tweet at @nigimmigration or send an email to – expiredppt@immigration.gov.ng.

“The special diaspora fast-track passport renewal programme is an initiative of @nigimmigration and @MinOfInteriorNG. This initiative is supported by all aviation authorities, @NigeriaMFA, Heads of Foreign Missions, Immigration Attaches, and international airline operators.”

The NIS said that Passport Offices will be opened on Saturdays to support the operations.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) had earlier announced that more than 5,000 passport booklets have been produced and ready for collection from its weekend passport production operation.

The NIS said that the milestone is sequel to the directive by the Comptroller General of Immigration, Isa Jere Idris, to Passport Offices and Diaspora desks at international airports to open on Saturdays to clear applications backlog.

Under a special arrangement to ramp up passport production, Passport Offices from 3 December, 2022 to 28 January, 2023, open between 10am to 2pm to speed up passport production in furtherance of steps by the Federal Ministry of Interior and NIS to clear the backlog of applications for the issuance of the enhanced Nigerian international e-Passports.

Atiku’s  Promise To Reopen Borders If  Elected President Will Complicate Insecurity – Lai

Alhaji Lai Muhammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has said that the promise by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to reopen all Nigerian borders if elected President in the next year’s election, will spell disaster for the country.

Speaking in Abuja today, December 22, at the 15th edition of the PMB Administration’s Scorecard Series (2015-2023), Lai Mohammed stressed that Atiku’s plan will worsen security in the country by allowing arms and ammunition to flow unhindered into the country

“He is ready to worsen the security situation in Nigeria by throwing open all the borders and allowing a massive inflow of small arms and light weapons into the country.

“Only an inordinately-ambitious candidate will wish to return Nigeria to an era of massive importation of food, to the detriment of local farmers, and an era of unbridled inflow of weapons.

“By that statement, Alhaji Atiku has simply informed Nigerians that he will reverse all the efforts made by the PMB Administration to achieve self-sufficiency in the production of many staples, especially rice. By that statement, the former Vice President has informed the country’s millions of rice farmers that they will soon lose their jobs when imported rice floods the country.

“By that statement, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar has told the hundreds of thousands of Nigerians working in the various rice mills that have sprung up under this administration that their jobs are over.

“By that statement, Alhaji Atiku will shut down most, if not all, of our new fertilizer blending companies, with thousands of jobs going down the drain. And by his declaration, the former Vice President has told Nigerians that he will worsen security in the country by allowing arms and ammunition to flow unhindered into the country.”
