Intelligence Source Names Notorious ISWAP Commanders Killed In Borno

A competent source in the Nigerian Defence Intelligence has released the names of what it called ” notorious commanders” of Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) that were killed on the fringes of Sambisa Forest, in the Bama axis of Borno State at the weekend.

“Some notorious Commanders suspected to have been eliminated in the massive well-coordinated onslaught include the so-called Ibn Hassan and Abuo Uzaifa, Abou Hauwa, Amir Shettima Bargo, Akura Buri, Abuo Zainab and Abuo Idris. They are the high-ranking leaders of ISWAP.”

According to the source, the operation was targeted at some identified terrorists’ enclaves at Gabchari, Sheruri, Mantari and Mallum Masari located in Bama axis of Borno State.

It was confirmed that the operation against terrorists witnessed the participation of local volunteers, who assisted troops in locating the hideouts of the ISWAP fighters after obtaining the GPS coordinates.

“The ground troops of the 199 Special Battalion and 222 Battalion of the Operation Hadin Kai demonstrated exceptional gallantry during the preparation and the execution of decisive attacks on the hideouts of terrorists.

“More impressive is the fact that the air support from our NAF aircraft engaged fleeing terrorists, bombing many of them in the process,” said the source.

This was even as report filtered in that another commander of the terrorist, Goni Faarouq has signified his intention to surrender himself, his family and some followers to the Nigerian troops.

It was learnt that lack of food and medication, compounded by the rainy season, have been adversely affecting their dwelling in the forest, and forcing more the terrorists to trooping out to surrender.

Presidency: Peter Obi’s “Street Show” Cannot Win Him Election – Senator Smart Adeyemi

Senator Smart Adeyemi

“Street show or one million man match being displayed by the supporters of (the Presidential candidate) of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi cannot win Presidential election.”

This was the verdict of the Senator, representing Kogi State West zone, Smart Adeyemi when he spoke to news men today, September 4, in Abuja, the nation’s federal capital.

He blamed Peter Obi for believing in street show which cannot in anyway be used to win election.

“His Excellency, Peter Obi ought not to have left PDP as required structure for Presidential election.”

America To Nigeria: We May Forgive Your Debts, But It Requires Full Policy Review

Top officials of the American Government have agreed in principle to forgive Nigeria’s debts “For-Climate Swap deal,” running into billions of Dollar, but that such proposal would require the full policy review of the American Government.

Responding to the request by Osinbajo in that direction, when he visited the US at different forums and events, including at the White House, the Administrator of USAID, Samantha Power said that the idea is “fresh thinking that is very exciting.”

He said that the US is open to such new thinking even though it would require the full policy review of the American Government.
In his meetings with the top officials of the US government  after his speech at the Centre for Global Development, the Vice President also pushed the Debt-for-Climate, DFC idea which he had previously proposed, publicly first, at the CGD.
“The proposed Debt-for-Climate swaps would be a very useful intervention and helpful as it will reduce debt burdens,” while advancing the Climate Change objectives of the international community.”
He described the idea as a Climate Change related financing instrument deserving of global consideration as it is a win-win proposal.
Professor Osinbajo also pushed the idea of opening up the Carbon Market in Africa so that the Climate Change actions of African countries can be adequately verified by the international community through the assessments of the appropriate verification institutions.
“We are hoping to get support and international buy-ins for these ideas,” specifically the DFC and the participation of African countries in the international carbon market. He reiterated that the DFC will help solve many of the debt burden challenges in Nigeria and other countries.”

Experts say under the DFC, sovereign debtors and international creditors will forgive all or a portion of external debt often running into billions in a country like Nigeria, in exchange for a commitment by the country to invest, in domestic currency, in specific climate or energy transition projects during a commonly agreed period.
The expectation is that Debt For Climate swaps will reduce the level of indebtedness and free up fiscal resources to be invested in clean energy projects in Nigeria and other countries signed up for the programme once accepted by creditor-nations.
Professor Osinbajo explained that the “debt for climate swaps is a type of debt swap where bilateral or multilateral debt is forgiven by creditors in exchange for a commitment by the debtor to use the outstanding debt service payments for national climate action programs.
“Typically, the creditor country or institution agrees to forgive part of a debt, if the debtor country would pay the avoided debt service payment in a local currency into an escrow or any other transparent fund and the funds must then be used for agreed climate projects in the debtor country.”
The Nigerian Vice President justified the rationale behind such a debt swap deal, saying that the commitment to it would “increase the fiscal space for climate-related investments and reduce the debt burden for participating developing countries.”
While in Washington D.C. last week, the VP met with his American counterpart, Vice President Kamala Harris at the White House, the US Secretary of the Treasury, Ms. Janet Yellen, and the USAID Administrator, Samantha Power. He also held an interactive session with a group of Nigerian staff members of the World Bank and the IMF, before he spoke at the Centre for Global Development.

Boss Mustapha At 66: Born To Serve, By Garba FIMC

On a day like yesterday, September 3, a son was born in Adamawa state, North-east Nigeria to the family of Mustapha, a teacher in the then Gongola state, Northern Province. Mustapha christened the newborn Boss, a name synonymous with leadership, the capacity to pilot affairs of a nation. The boy has the ability of a pilot to guide and direct with all sense of initiative, foresight, and administrative skills to serve humanity.

Sixty six years down the line, Barrister Boss Mustapha has demonstrated the fact that he was born to serve. His birthday recalls my memory of his early days in politics. Then he was much into the service of humanity as a practicing lawyer. He gave his best in this regard with much interest in political participation.

At 66, Boss Mustapha is today a household name, a name far above rubies with a flowering stature. In 1992 he was the Adamawa state chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), with steady growth in his political acceptance. On several occasions, Boss Mustapha contested the governorship elections on the platforms of SDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC), respectively. He was the managing director of Nigerian Inland Waterways.

A management consultant per excellent, Boss Mustapha is indeed an important intellectual rendezvous for the law profession and public intellectuals in Nigeria. He built a formidable political relationship as a party and grassroots man. As a devout Christian who believes in equity, his life revolves around justice, peace, and development.

At 66 Barrister Boss Mustapha can look back with a measure of contentment having positively impacted on the lives of many people. In his nature as a patient man, Boss Mustapha hardly talks, but with a selective way of approach in any public or political gathering whenever he talks. A humble personality, he can stoop low for anyone seeking his attention. The SGF is an ardent listener but always coming out with a few words of inspiration. My few encounters with him and at public functions suggest to me that Boss Mustapha is friendly, kind-hearted, and has a listening ear.

He is currently the secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), this is where I see him as a pillar in upholding the country’s life line. In this office, this man has gone beyond being the scribe of the nation. Boss Mustapha has been able to stabilise the economy, the fractured unity, and corporate existence of Nigeria. He worked as a clock to make sure that Nigeria under the President Muhammadu Buhari government delivers the dividends of democracy to the over 200 million people of the country.

Many see him as a hard-working an, but my understanding is that Boss Mustapha is a blessing and a pride to Nigerians, especially to the people of Adamawa state. He is a pool of inspiration to the young generation and a motivation to anyone looking for a good Nigerian with high intellectual capacity.

I join millions of others to wish Barrister Boss Mustapha many happy returns. He is one of the few redemptive figures in a community where it is difficult to truly know what has happened to political leadership in our land. Boss Mustspha stands out, with his integrity as a viable asset; he remains a great man, a pillar hanging on the lights of hope to Nigerians.

Happy many returns Sir. I wish you well with a successful and glorious ending, with greater achievements and accomplishments.

Congratulations on your 66th birthday

Senate Moves To Stop Same Faith Presidential Ticket After 2023

The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is seeking amendment to section 84 of the 2022 Electoral Act to stop same faith ticket of either Muslim- Muslim or Christian – Christian for President and Vice President of Nigeria by any political party after the 2023 general election.

Senator Smart Adeyemi ( APC Kogi West), in a draft copy of a bill to that effect at a media briefing today, September 4, said that the Muslim – Muslim Presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress ( APC ), has generated furor in the polity, thereby necessitating the move.

“Section 84 of the Principal Act will be amended by inserting a new subsection 3 which will states thus “No political party shall nominate candidates of the same religion as Presidential candidate and Vice Presidential candidate after the 2023 election.

“When this is accommodated, it will serve as a guide against any oversight such as this in the future as further occurrences will be deemed as silent policy which is capable of bringing down the fabrics of the Nation.”

Smart Adeyemi said that wide range consultations on the need for the amendment have been made with the leadership of the Senate and other colleagues.

He however, said that though apprehensions raised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over same faith Presidential ticket were genuine but that the broadmindedness and pedigree of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kashim Shetimma, would allay all fears being raised.

Tinubu and Shettima, he added, should be assessed based on their pedigrees and not their religious faith or even political party.

“Nigerians should look at the individuals candidates contesting for the presidency in 2023 and not the political parties they belong to or religion they practice.

“Based on my conviction, despite the same faith ticket , Tinubu and Shetimma are the best for the country come 2023.

“They have demonstrated required capacities , competence and commitment while in office as Executive Governors of Lagos and Borno State separately.

“Asiwaju Tinubu in particular, demonstrated his pan Nigerian disposition with his cabinet composition devoid of tribal or religious sentiments.

“He and Shettima are in actual fact, Nigeria candidate that should be voted for,” he said.

He lampooned the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, for violating the zoning policy of his political party by declaring it is the turn of the South, to produce next President.

The LP flagbearer added that he is not looking for a private jet, sophisticated house, or eager to own a house in America.

Despite Insecurity, Farmers Set To Produce 23 Million Metric Tonnes Of Maize This Year

Members of the Maize Growers and Processors Association of Nigeria are set to produce 23 million metric tonnes of maize this year, a 12 per cent rise from last year’s production, despite the problem of insecurity in the country.

The increase according to maize growers association, is due to cheaper credit from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which has helped to erace the high costs of fertiliser and diesel.

Maize, along with rice and wheat are the most consumed grains in Nigeria with manufacturers processing maize for cereals and livestock feed.

But some farmers in the so-called maize belt in northern Nigeria have been forced out of their farms due to attacks by Islamist insurgents and gunmen who kidnap people for ransom.

Speaking to to Reuters, the President of the Association, Edwin Chigozie said that central bank funding had helped farmers raise output, saying: “a lot of funds have been advanced to farmers using the Anchor Borrowers Programme (loan) of the Central Bank of Nigeria,” he said.

“I can tell you it has helped to scale up production, to scale up output because virtually every component of the value chain is being addressed, mechanisation, quality inputs, extension service.

“The Central Bank is supporting farmers with cheap credit in a bid to reduce grain imports it says drains scarce foreign exchange. Commercial banks are not keen to lend to farmers due to insecurity and a higher risk of default, Chigozie said.

“The 23 million tonnes will fall short of Nigeria’s annual requirement of 30 million tonnes and the gap will be filled with imports, he added. Production costs have increased for Nigerian farmers. A bag of fertiliser now costs up to N22,000 from N15,000 in 2021, Chigozie said. “The cost of cultivating one hectare of maize farm has gone up by 43 per cent.”

With All Wike’s Bravadoes, He Will Still Work For Atiku: Dino Melaye Swears

Dino Melaye

“I say it with every blood in my vein that Wike is a PDP man. He is not going to leave the party and he is going to work with Atiku Abubakar because I know that he is a man of honour”

This was the verdict of a spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party presidential campaign Council, Senator Dino Melaye.

Melaye, in a media interview spoke about Governor Wike as being a strong PDP man that would never think of leaving the party and its presidential flag bearer, Atiku Abubakar for any reason.

“He (Wike) is a man of his words. I was present at the national convention where Wike held the microphone and said he was a PDP man 100 per cent and that whoever emerged there that day as the presidential candidate was going to have his support.

“Wike is 59 going on 60. He is a matured man; he is not going to eat his words.”

Feuding PDP Chieftains Turn London Into Centre For Meetings: Wike, Others Return There

London, not Nigeria, is now a centre for the feuding chieftains of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to hold meetings.

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, his Benue and Oyo State counterparts, Samuel Ortom and Seyi Makinde have again, flown to London, United Kingdom for further meeting on the crisis rocking the party.

It was learnt that Makinde, who has been on his annual vacation since the last meeting, was first joined by Wike, while Ortom who was on his way to the United States of America, made a stopover for the meeting.

Although details of their meeting yesterday have not been made public, but it was gathered that it had to do with charting a way out of the crisis.

It was gathered that the All Progressives Congress, APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu may join the PDP governors in the United Kingdom to conclude the previous meeting.

Moves so far, to reconcile Governor Wike and the PDP Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, whose relationship hit the rocks after the PDP primary election has continued to prove difficult.

Recall that Governor Seyi Makinde, his Abia State counterpart, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu and other PDP stalwarts from Governor Wike’s camp met with Asiwaju in London on August 23.
